VICTORIAN surf life savers
are urging the community to
register for Boardies Day
and help raise vital funds for
the Surf Life Saving Foundation.
By signing up to wear your
board shorts on March 28, you
can say thank you to the 45,000
volunteers who donate more
than 1.4 million hours a year
to save lives on our beaches.
In Victoria last year they
acted 28,366 times in more
than 154,000 volunteer hours.
But Surf Life Saving spends a
minimum of $52,000 for vital
equipment and every new
member costs $850 to train.
Surf Life Saving Foundation head Steve Francia
said he was continually
amazed by the generous
spirit of the everyday Australians donating their time.
“Many people don’t know
surf lifesavers patrolling
our beaches are volunteers;
everyday people from all
walks of life,” he said.
“Register to wear your
board shorts to work or
school on Boardies Day and
help raise vital funds to support Surf Life Saving clubs
across the country.”

INCREASING demand for
alternative food choices led
an online operation into a
peninsula store.
Bulk Whole Foods Market
recently set up shop in Somerville and stocks a range of
foods that cater for specific
dietary requirements including gluten free, sugar
free, dairy free,
paleo and organic.
Owner Bibi Lafleur
(pictured)
has operated an
online store since
February last year, but responded to demand to have
these hard-to-find products
under one roof.
Among the store’s most
popular products are insecticide-free almonds, coconut
flour, coconut sugar and rapadura sugar.
Ms Lafleur said she was
glad to see a resurgence of
people showing an interest
in where their food came
from. “A lot of our products
are affordable, but the main
thing we want to do is make
all of this more accessible to
people,” she said.
The store, at 1081 Frankston-Flinders Rd, is hoping
to offer cooking classes.
