I got into the movie theater business because I grew up with
parents who showed me how powerful movies could be. I
caught the bug, and later, I would travel the country to see
the hidden films, tucked away in a single-screen theater
in a small town, but still inspiring and thrilling audiences. I
vowed I’d find a way, one day, to bring those movies here to
Columbus.
Now, as we celebrate our fifth anniversary at GFC, the team
and I get to do that every day. We’re here to thrill and inspire
you. And ultimately, to make the world a better place by
helping you see the world and one another in new ways.
To help us do that better, we made a big transition on our fifth
birthday: we became a non-profit theater. That won’t change
our maverick mix of movies. But it will help us do more with
them. And it gives you the chance to participate directly in
our success.
Thank you for being a part of the Gateway Film Center family.
I think you’ll love the movies we’ve lined up for you this
quarter. There are blockbusters, indies, docs and special
events and local films. They’re different. But they all share
one thing: when the lights go down and the projector starts
… they’re magic.

Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles
/FEB 27
GFC EXCLUSIVE
DOCUMENTARY
Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles looks
at the remarkable genius of Orson Welles on the eve of his
centenary - the enigma of his career as a Hollywood star, a
Hollywood director (for some a Hollywood failure), and a
crucially important independent filmmaker. Orson Welles’s
life was magical: a musical prodigy at age 10, a director of
Shakespeare at 14, a painter at 16, a star of stage and radio
at 20, romances with some of the most beautiful women in
the world, including Rita Hayworth. His work was similarly
extraordinary, most notably Citizen Kane, (considered by many
to be the most important movie ever made), created by Welles
when he was only 25. In the years following Citizen Kane, Welles’s
career continued to change as he made film after film (some
never finished, many dismissed) and acted in other projects
often to earn money in order to keep making his own films.
Magician features scenes from almost every existing Welles film,
from Hearts of Age, (which he made in a day when he was only 18
years old) to rarely-seen clips from his final unfinished works like
The Other Side of the Dream, The Deep, and Don Quixote, as well
as his television and commercial work.

When a man goes for virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars, an unexpected and harrowing series

cinema classics
Acting great Charles Laughton directed only one
film - this one - and managed to make a legend:
an elegantly lyrical, slyly brutal chase movie. Two
orphans must elude a psychotic preacher that’s
after their father’s hidden loot. Robert Mitchum is all
muscular, smarmy menace as Rev. Harry Powell, the
man of God with “LOVE” and “HATE” tattooed across
his knuckles.
Chappie /MAR 6
Neill Blomkamp specializes in dystopic sci-fi, but Chappie marks a change of pace and heart. Chappie is the first thinking and
feeling robot and, like a child, he must navigate the world and make the right choices -- choices that will decide the way the
world looks at robots.
unfinished business /MAR 6
A hard-working small business owner (Vince Vaughn) and his two associates travel to Europe to close an important deal, but
their routine trip goes off the rails in every imaginable and unimaginable way, including unplanned stops at a massive sex
fetish event and a global economic summit.
buzzard /MAR 6
Small-time scam artist Marty (an unforgettably
caustic Joshua Burge) is a slacker ekeing by
on cold SpaghettiOs and lousy temp jobs until
mounting paranoia compels him to rebel
against the established order -- armed with
nothing but bogus checks and a grotesquely
modified Nintendo Power Glove. The New

comedy “aggressively satirical and sometimes
shocking” and “hauntingly sad.”

DOCUMENTARY
From inner-city housing projects to the biggest stages in boxing, this insightful and provocative documentary charts the lives
of some of America’s heaviest hitters, including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Bernard Hopkins, as they seek to break
out of poverty via one of the few outlets available. Director Bert Marcus skillfully weaves their personal histories and gripping
footage from their biggest bouts to explore the meaning of the American dream in a society increasingly fragmented between
rich and poor.
Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension /MAR 13
In 2007, Oren Peli made an indie horror feature as a crew of one -- writing, directing, editing and everything in between. It
was bought off the festival circuit by Paramount, given a theatrical run ... and became the most profitable film ever made (in
terms of return on investment). In this sixth installment, Paranormal Activity returns with a brand new family terrorized by dark
forces from the other side.

DOCUMENTARY
Miss Hill: Making Dance Matter tells the inspiring and largely unknown story of a woman whose life was defined by her love for
dance. Martha Hill emerges as dance’s secret weapon, someone who fought against great odds to establish dance as a legitimate
art form in America. Through archival footage, lively interviews with friends and intimates, and rare footage of the spirited subject,
the film explores Hills’s arduous path from a Bible Belt childhood in Ohio to the halls of academe at NYU and Bennington College
to a position of power and influence as Juilliard’s founding director of dance (1952-1985). Peppered with anecdotal material
delivered by dance notables who knew her, this revelatory story depicts her struggles and successes, including the battle royal
that accompanied her move to the Lincoln Center campus.
