Holliston Senior Center 150 Goulding Street Holliston, MA 01746 508-429-0622 Senior Center Hours: 9:00am—4:00pm Monday –Thursday 9:00am—3:00pm Friday 4:00pm– 8:00pm Tuesday evenings (March 10-May 19) March/April 2015 Edition I want to thank everyone who has welcomed me to the Holliston Senior Center. Especially the wonderful group of seniors who have stopped in or called to welcome me. Thank you so much!! The center has such a supportive and dedicated staff, COA Board, Senior Support Foundation Group and volunteers. I am so happy to be a part of the Holliston Senior Center Community. The senior center is available for you to enjoy. We would like to know what classes and programs that you want to attend. Please call, email or stop into the center anytime!! Computer classes are back by popular demand. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 2:30pm—3:30pm. Chair massage is being offered the first Tuesday of the month by appointment from 9:30am—12:30pm. Stop into the center for board games, pitch, bridge and cribbage. The senior center will be open Tuesday evenings beginning on March 10 through May 19, 2015. The hours are from 4:00pm—8:00pm. In the pool room, the pool tournament will take place on the first and third Tuesdays from 4:00pm-8:00pm; open pool will take place the second and fourth Tuesday from 4:00pm-8:00pm. Computer classes, ballroom dancing, pitch, cribbage, scrabble will be available during the evening hours. Also special event programs are being offered. A grant was just awarded to begin a walking club. We are in the early stages of planning, but the program will begin at the end of March. Please call the senior center for information. I am also hoping that for the next edition of the newsletter I will have an update on the parking study. Happy Spring!! - Jean Boulette, Director St. Patrick's Day Luncheon & Tune Timers Band Monday, March 16 at 12:00pm Join us for a lunch of: Caesar Salad, Cornbeef & Cabbage, Boiled Potatoes & Carrots, Irish Soda Bread, and Carrot Cake. Our own Tune Timers will be playing their instruments for your listening entertainment. Irish music will be played. A donation of $7.00 is requested. Thank you! 2 Holliston Senior Center March/April 2015 Exercise Programs Yoga Instructor: Roberta Weiner Mondays and Wednesdays 11:00am—12:00pm Yoga is a wonderful way to strengthen your mind, body and spirit! Yoga will help stretch out tight muscles, increase lung capacity, help with a good night’s sleep and more. Zumba Gold Instructor: Lourdes Fournier Tuesdays 12:30pm—1:30pm Zumba Gold is a fun and easy way to perform endurance training which keeps the heart healthy and the circulatory system strong. Zumba develops coordination, balance, muscle and burns calories to stave off the weight gain that accompanies aging. Therapeutic Chi Gong Instructor: Linda Bellefeuille Tuesdays 1:30pm—2:30pm The practice of Chi Gong can help maintain and regain the balance that is so necessary to live the active life you desire. Comfortable clothing is suggested. Exercise Instructor: Linda Bellefeuille Tuesday and Thursdays 10:30am—11:30am Linda is an experienced, licensed and certified instructor here to help you customize your moves to match your needs for balance, strength and flexibility (wear comfortable clothing and supportive footwear) Pilates Instructor: Allie Barrett Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30am -10:30am Allie will guide and help you improve your strength, balance and circulation through a whole body workout of every level and fitness. Line Dancing Instructor: Manny Correia Fridays 10:00am—11:00am Laugh and exercise at the same time! Meet new friends and learn to dance. required. Thank you!! 3 Holliston Senior Center March/April 2015 Programs/Activities Legal Hour, with Elder Attorney Jay Marsden The second Tuesday of the month—Dates: March 10 and April 14 at 10:00am. Jay will explain your legal responsibilities, estate planning, elder law, probate or trust. This is your time to ask questions. Please sign up in advance, $3.00 donation. Writers’ Group, Instructor: Lois Hosmer Class meets the first Tuesday of the month from 10:00am—12:00pm. Join us on March 3rd and April 7th for an enjoyable morning of listening, writing, and talking. The subject for March is a favorite picture; photo, painting, print. The subject for April is Warming Up. In April please bring a poem to share as it is Poetry Month. Hope to see you there. Old Guys Breakfast Come and enjoy breakfast without having to cook or clean up! The breakfast is for all ages 55 and over. Eggs, bacon, French toast, hash browns, coffee and juice is served. Please register ahead of time. A $3.00 donation is requested. Veterans are at no charge. The Board of Selectmen will be enjoying breakfast with us on April 14. Please call to sign up. Dates: March 10 and April 14 at 8:00am. Craft Class, Instructor: Linda Marshall On March 17, we will start thinking Spring, with a bright flower arrangement. On April 21, we will try something new, making frosted glass jar luminaries, which are great for your indoor or outdoor summer table. Assorted color choices will be available and all will include a battery operated candle. Classes are at 10:00am and a $5.00 donation is requested. Please sign up in advance. Quilting Classes, Instructor: Linda Ramrath Learn how to make flying geese, wool felt stitches and more. We will meet Wednesday March 18th from 1-3pm. Another fun field trip to two quilt shops on Friday, March 27th ($10.00) at 9:00am. In April, we meet on Wednesdays April 15th and 29th from 1-3pm. This is a time to learn a new technique or simply enjoy the company and finish your own project. There are limited seats on the bus, so sign up for the field trip soon! A $4.00 donation is requested for the class. Water Color Painting Classes, Instructor: Lavonne Suwalski Classes meet every Thursday at 9:30am. Beginners and experienced painters are welcome. This is a wonderful group where you can have fun, make friends and just enjoy the creative experience. Come paint when you can. Each week is a different lesson. Each class begins with demonstrations of techniques so that you will see exactly how to paint and then have time to practice. You will be able to almost finish a painting in each class. The focus will be on watercolor as the medium but can be applied to other types of painting. A $4.00 donation is requested. Bring painting materials if you have them. Photography Class, Instructor: Carmen Chiango Join the class every Thursday at 12:30pm in the lounge. Come to the classes and share ideas, photos and learn how to improve techniques. Beginner and advanced photographers are welcomed. Chair Massage– with Robin Pease LMT Massages are offered the 1st Tuesday of the month from 9:30-12:30pm by appointment. Fees are $1.00 per minute– you decide the number of minutes. Appointments are necessary—sign up by calling the senior center. 4 Holliston Senior Center _______ March/April 2015 Knitting, Instructor: Donna Blumenau 1st and 3rd Friday mornings from 9:30am—11:30am. These sessions will cover K2TOG, SSK, K, P, CO, BO, YO, these are some of the knitting abbreviations that knitters speak. If you would like to know more please join our group. We will be meeting on- Dates: Fridays March 6 and 20 and April 3 and 17 from 9:3011:30 in the dining room. A $3.00 donation is requested. Tune Timers Band: Fridays Come to the center on Fridays from 1:00pm— 4:00pm and listen to Michelle, Dick, George, Charlie, Warren, Bob, Rocco, Tony, Howie and the gang. Plenty of room for dancing, singing and a fun-filled afternoon is guaranteed. You don’t want to miss this event! Refreshments are also served. Check with your health insurance company to see if you qualify. If you qualify, we can provide you with documentation using My Senior Center Software – to show that you are attending an exercise program at the Holliston Senior Center. Just one more reason why you need to swipe your card each time you enter the building. Thank you! Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 2:30pm-3:30pm. Each class will cover a specific topic. Week 1: Using an ipad, Week 2: Downloading books, Week 3: Facebook, Week 4: Pictures, Week 5: Facetime/Skype, Week 6: Windows 8 and students will also have the opportunity to ask and have your questions answered. My Senior Center Software— Every Swipe Counts Downsizing Presentation by David Dowd, Sell Mom’s House This program provides practical tips on downsizing and how to transition to a new location with less stress and in far less time. Join us at the senior center on April 29 at 1:00pm. Learn reasons for downsizing, and common misconceptions; Strategies for homes in any condition – even those in need of repair; Downsizing tips and how to map from old location to new; orderly process to sell your possessions, donate or give to family & charity; what to fix and what not to fix to prepare your home; ways to sell with and without paying a realty commission; area market trends and considerations when pricing your home. Free presentation. Rep. Carolyn Dykema Rep. Carolyn Dykema would like to inform all seniors about the Elderly Real Estate Tax Credit, also known as the Senior Circuit Breaker. This is a tax credit of up to $1,050 to principle homeowners and renters throughout the Commonwealth age 65 and older. To qualify, total income cannot exceed $56,000 for a single filer who is not the head of a household, $70,000 for a head of household, or $84,000 for taxpayers filing jointly. To claim the Circuit Breaker Credit, you must file a Massachusetts state income tax return and include the Circuit Breaker Credit form, the “Schedule CB”. Contact the Massachusetts Department of Revenue Customer Service Bureau at 617-887-6367 or toll free at 1- 800-392-6089. You may also contact the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance hotline at 1-800-906-9887 or AARP’s Tax-Aide program at 1-888-227-7669. 5 Holliston Senior Center March/April 2015 Outreach Corner, by Linda Marshall As the Outreach Coordinator, there are many things that I can help you with. I can assist with referrals to meals on wheels, or help to arrange in-home services. If you are in need of transportation, registration forms are available through this office and the process will be explained to you as to how to use the Center’s vans system. , We also loan out free medical equipment, assist with benefit applications, such as food stamps and fuel assistance, and can provide information on housing options, including senior housing, assisted living, and nursing home care. If you have any questions or would like more information on any of these issues, please give me a call at the Center. BayPath Volunteers Bay Path's Area Agency on Aging is looking for new members to join the advisory council. Members advocate on behalf of older people and the issues that affect their lives. Meeting six times per year, the Council is a voluntary group of citizens mandated by the Older American Act to provide information, guidance, advice and support to the Area Agency on Aging. We rely on Advisory Council members to help us improve services for older adults in the Metro west area. The Council fulfills this obligation by working through the BayPath Board of Directors, the Area Agency staff, its own committees and community leadership. Dealing with Alzheimer’s: At home; in Assisted Living; or in the Nursing Home Tuesday, March 31 at 6:00pm In this seminar, representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association and BayPath Elder Services will join Attorney Arthur Bergeron of Mirick O’Connell to discuss strategies and available programs to help you and your family deal with advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Learn about the resources available to support you through these difficult times, whether you or your loved one lives at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing home. He will be available to answer your questions or listen to your concerns. Podiatry Clinic Dr. Cooper will at the center on Wednesdays—Dates: March 11 and April 8 with scheduled appointments beginning at 9:00am. Appointments are required by calling the senior center. The fee is $35.00 (payable to Dr. Cooper) due at the time of the appointment. Bingo Come for lunch and stay for Bingo. The first and third Wednesday of the month from 1:00– 3:00pm. Dates: March 4 & 18, April 1 & 15. Lunch and Movie March 19, at 11:45am we will be featuring “The Other Sister”, 1999 rated PG, Carla’s overprotective parents have misgivings about her getting an apartment and pursing a relationship with a another mentally challenged person. April 16, at 11:45am we will be featuring “Phenomenon”, 1996 rated PG, After he’s knocked unconscious, a humble mechanic awakens with incredible intellectual powers that soon draw the attention of scientists and the FBI. AARP We are pleased to offer the free AARP Tax Aide program again this year at the senior center. This program offers tax assistance to low and moderate income individuals prepare their 2014 Federal and Massachusetts income tax returns. Appointments are on Mondays only beginning in February through April 6. Please call the center to schedule your appointment, 508-429-0622. Attention Golfers—Bill Ring Polish up your clubs and join an enthusiastic group of golfers, all skill levels who enjoy playing nine holes of golf one a week. We had a good season last year and hope to repeat it again this year! Men and women are welcomed to enjoy the exercise and camaraderie. If interested please call Bill at 781-929-7151. Chesmore Funeral Home Presentation Keefe Chesmore, Director of the Chesmore Funeral home will be at the center on Wednesday March 25 at 1:00pm to answer any questions that you might have concerning funeral services. Keep Moving Walking Club We just received a grant to begin a walking club. Promoting physical activity to help prevent and postpone chronic disease. We are in the early stages of planning...please contact the senior center for more information. Beginning this Spring! 7 Holliston Senior Center March/April 2015 Do you belong to Prescription Advantage? Prescription Advantage provides supplemental assistance, based on income, for members. IT IS NOT IN PLACE OF YOUR PLAN D. Prescription Advantage is a secondary payer. If your prescriptions costs are high, PA helps when you reach the DONUT HOLE. All benefits of PA are income based. PA may help pay all or part of the Medicare prescription drug plan's drug co-payments. PA will also provide an out-of-pocket spending limit. Once this limit is reached, PA will cover drug co-payments for the remainder of the plan year. Are you turning 65 between April to July? If YES, are you planning on signing up for Medicare Part A and B ? Are you confused by all the mailings, advertisements, listening to friends? Some questions may be answered by emailing [email protected] Children and Resident Encounter– C.A.R.E The Holliston Police Department launched their new program C.A.R.E. (Children and Resident Encounter). The aim of the program is to create a database of resident information that would be available to police officers for those individuals with autism or Alzheimer’s disease if they wander from their safe environment. Examples are: Children or adults with autism, use of a mobility device, non-verbal or have Downs Syndrome; Adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. Please stop by the Holliston Police Station or Senior Center for a form and release waiver. · Holliston High School Spring Play—May 1 at 3:00pm, Refreshments at 2:15pm “Rossum’s Universal Robots” · Mother’s Day Tea and Hat show, May 7 at the senior center St. Mary’s K of C Annual Raffle on June 17 Help support the senior center by buying a raffle ticket.
