Course Synopsis
The course will explore more critically
and in greater depth several selected
texts from the Nusantara literature
(both prose and verse forms),
beginning from the classical age (14th19th
Cent)
to
modern
and
contemporary time. To optimize the
appreciation of the texts, both
contextual approach, which gives
importance to aspects of authorship
and the cultural-historical milieu; and
textual approach, which focuses on
genre (convention and poetics),
structure (themes and
narrative
techniques) and form (style) will be
used. Based on the two approaches,
texts will be analysed through selected
reading theories. The analysis will
attempt to delineate the uniqueness of
these texts as the creative and
intellectual products of the Malays in
the Nusantara region.
This seminar will introduce crosscultural themes in the study of South
East Asian Literatures. It is orientated
towards the comparison of works of
literature that cross barriers and
borders of tradition and culture that is
evidenced by selected cross-cultural
discourses. Among the topics for
discussion are history, identity, the
local
and
national philosophies, poetics and
concept of beauty, the system of
justice, nationalism and patriotism. For
texts
a
selection
of
works
from traditional literature (hikayat,
pantun, Panji, history, law and religion)
and modern literature (the novel, short
stories and poetry) will be used. A
comparative study of literary works will
enhance a greater understanding of the
cultural life-styles and literary traditions
of Southeast Asians that are enriched
by elements from outside the region.
Course Synopsis
This course has both a theoretical and
applied orientation. Its objective is to
enable the students to deepen their
understanding of a number of

kursus ini akan lebih bersifat
perbandingan, iaitu di samping
meneliti ciri-ciri sintaksis BM kita
juga
akan
membandingkannya
dengan ciri-ciri sintaksis bahasabahasa tabii yang lain, terutamanya
sintaksis Bahasa Inggeris. Kajian
linguistik yang didasarkan kepada
pendekatan ini telah cuba mencirikan
tatabahasa semua bahasa tabii
dengan
menggunakan
prinsip
sejagat yang dikongsi oleh semua
bahasa, dan seperangkat parameter
yang membezakan satu bahasa
daripada bahasa yang lain.
Sistem tatabahasa BM (khususnya
aspek sintaksis) akan dibincangkan
dan diteliti berdasarkan kerangka
teori Prinsip & Parameter (teori P&P)
ini.
Komponen-komponen dalam
teori P&P dan aspek-aspek sintaksis
yang
akan
dibincangkan
termasuklah:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
Teori -θ (Theta Theory) –
Leksikon dan struktur argumen.
Teori X-berpalang (X′ Theory) –
Frasa & Ayat dan representasi
strukturnya.
Teori Kasus (Case Theory) –
distribusi FN nyata.
Teori
Tambatan(
Binding
Theory) – Interpretasi dan
hubungan
antara
sesama
nominal dalam ayat .
Teori Kawalan (Control Theory)
– Kehadiran dan Distribusi FN
tak nyata ( Non-overt NPs).

Semantik dan
Wacana Bahasa
Melayu Lanjutan
Kursus ini bertujuan memperkenalkan
pelajar kepada konsep dan beberapa
pendekatan teoretis dan metodologi.
Terdapat dua subdisiplin linguistik
yang mengkaji makna, iaitu semantik
dan wacana. Di samping pemahaman
terhadap konsep, beberapa teori yang
berkaitan
dengan
kedua-dua
subdisplin ini akan dibincangkan dan
diterapkan penggunaannya untuk
menganalisis data bahasa Melayu.
Aspek teori semantik akan bertumpu
kepada teori tradisional (umpamanya
nahu generatif) dan kontemporari
(antaranya semantik formal dan
logik).
Pendekatan
menganalisis
wacana yang akan diberi tumpuan
ialah pendekatan linguistik/ struktural,
falsafah/pragmatik (lakuan bahasa)
dan inferen (implikatur, panakbiran,
praandaian dsb.) dan etnografi
pertuturan.

MASTER OF ARTS (SOUTHEAST ASIAN HISTORY)
Today, history has become an increasingly important element in nation building.
The significance given to the teaching of history as a subject in the national
education system well reflects this truth. As such, it is pertinent that practitioners
of history are provided with the right training so that they are able to contribute
to nation building, besides participating in issues related to history. However, the
existing training and courses offered are not sufficient enough to impart the
required knowledge. The Master of Arts in Southeast Asian programme aims at
overcoming this limitation.
This Master of Arts in Southeast Asian programme is offered both full-time and
part-time. It is conducted on the mixed-mode format that involves course work
and research. For every paper taken the students are required to attend lectures,
participate in tutorials, submit an essay and sit for the final examinations.

Psychology and
Sociology of
Language
Course Synopsis
The course covers the sociological and
psychological dimensions of language.
The sociological dimension discusses
the relationship between language and
society and social issues relating to
language. It deals with how language
is used in multilingual speech
communities, explains the varying
patterns of language use, examines
social reasons for language change,
looks into how and why different racial
and social groups develop and maintain
speech variation. It will take account of
both individual and community – wide
attitudes, assumptions and motivations
directed not only to the choice of
linguistic repertoire but also to those
who make the choices.
The psychological dimension discusses
the theories of learning and the major
contemporary issues relating to the
psychological foundations of language.
It deals with the behaviourists’ views on
language acquisition especially the
views of Skinner, Watson and Pavlov;
the views of the cognitive psychologists
such as Piaget and the cognitiveinnateness hypothesis of linguists-cumpsychologists such as Chomsky, Slobin
and McNeill. It examines the second
language learning theories of Krashen,
Selinker and others. It looks into
human language processing including
perception and production of speech
and writing as well as the instrumental
and integrative motivation towards
language learning.

historical aspects of literacy and
social aspects of literacy.
This course will also explore the
interface of literacy and literature. In
this regard attention would be given
to the following aspects:
