“We are thrilled that Chancellor Zimpher
has recognized Kara and Courtney with this
honor,” said SUNY Delhi President Candace
S. Vancko. “They are proven leaders and
exceptional role models for their peers. They
deserve to be recognized among the shining
stars of the State University system.”
Kara Haraden has achieved a 3.94 GPA
as a Delhi student and mother of five. As
a stellar student, she earned the college’s
Merrill Family Foundation Scholarship,
which recognizes students for demonstrating
significant community service commitment
and involvement while at SUNY Delhi. As
part of her Delhi experience, Haraden has
served as an intern at the Animal Protective
Foundation in Scotia where she has gained
real-world experience in all aspects of
animal shelter care and medicine. Haraden’s
academic acumen and superb work ethic has
made her a role model for other students.

High Profile Americans Continue to Join Timely Fight for Marriage Equality
Upstate New Yorkers Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo Latest to Add Support
WASHINGTON – Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo and his wife,
Sunrise, join the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – in a
new video in the “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign. In the
video, the upstate New Yorkers say, “We’re raising our three kids to treat
everyone with dignity and respect. We believe everyone should have the
right and the chance to be with the person they love – straight or gay.” The campaign, which raises the public profile of marriage equality in the
Empire State, can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.
“The fight for marriage equality is nationwide and New York is front and
center,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “With a governor committed
to sign a marriage equality bill and polls showing the vast majority
of New Yorkers support it, we are honored to have Mark and Sunrise
Ruffalo, residents of upstate New York, join the chorus of voices in the
New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign.”
Two recent New York polls show a majority of New Yorkers support
marriage equality. A Siena Research Institute Poll earlier last month
found 57 percent of New Yorkers support marriage for same-sex couples
and another recent poll by Quinnipiac University had support at 56
percent.
The New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign is centered on video
testimonials from New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex
couples to marry. The ads are running online with placement on Taxi TV
and elsewhere in the weeks ahead. To date, HRC has released videos
from Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo, John Slattery, Joan Rivers, Barbara
Bush, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Daphne Rubin-Vega,
Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Fran Drescher, Moby, Mayor Michael
Bloomberg, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore and Kenneth
Cole – with more to follow in the coming weeks and months.

Haraden serves as a board member of the Schenectady Swim Club and a
board member of the Friends of Saratoga County Animal Shelter. At the
Saratoga shelter, she was instrumental in initiating a feline foster program.
Courtney Ketz is an extraordinary student
who excels academically while remaining
highly engaged in extracurricular activities on
the Delhi campus. Ketz has earned a number
of awards and scholarships including the
Merrill Family Scholarship and a College
Association Scholarship for three consecutive
years each and a Hope Eddy Scholarship
for two consecutive years. She was named
Delhi’s 2009 Associate Degree Student of the
Year and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma
National Honor Society and the New York
Association of Veterinary Technicians.

On February 23, 2011 Tau Delta Chi held their
first Annual Lift-a-thon competition in the
Clark Field House. The three events that were
held were bench presses, squats, and curls.
Overall, TDX raised about $500 which is being
donated to the Kidney Cancer Foundation.

competition was Claude Davis.

you can do to help end sexual violence is to accept the responsibility
to be a part of the solution. By signing the One Student pledge you are
making a commitment to, in voice and action, create change. Change
begins with one student, one campus, one community. Start here. Sign
the pledge. It is the first step towards changing the way we think about
sexual violence. Be the one to use your power to enact change.

MATT ROLOFF TO APPEAR AT SUNY DELHI
Matt Roloff, the star of the TLC Network Reality Show, “Little
People, Big World” is scheduled to appear at SUNY Delhi on Tuesday night, March 29 at 8 PM in the Okun Theater. Mr. Roloff’s appearance will be co-sponsored by the Student Programming Board,
and the SUNY Delhi Office of Disability Support Services.
Meet Matt Roloff
Matt Roloff is best known for starring in the hit TLC reality show
‘Little People, Big World.’ In over 225 episodes, tens of millions
of people around the world have followed the lives and challenges
of Matt and his family at their home in Oregon, but there is more
to Matt Roloff’s story than the TV show and being a devoted
husband and father of four children.
Matt operates a successful family farm, has authored two books,
was a top salesman for Fortune 500 companies, and currently
owns a manufacturing company specializing in mobility
equipment designed for little people. He has served as national
President of Little People of America and has since co-founded a non-profit organization that supports little people across the nation. Matt has also
made three humanitarian trips to the Middle East to facilitate life saving medical efforts for little people in Iraq.
Aside from Matt’s entrepreneurial success and celebrity,
it’s his personal story that has truly inspired so many. He
has viewed the social stigmas and physical limitations
of being a dwarf not as obstacles but as opportunities,
helping him thrive in a world not always welcoming. He is
a big thinker and an even bigger dreamer who has crafted
ways to work around those challenges and move forward
to achieve his goal of living an extraordinary life.
Through his sincere and motivating stories Matt will

DCIC SPENDS WINTER BREAK HELPING HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

On February 26th fourteen students and two chaperones from the Delhi
College Interfaith Council, flew down to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and
spent a week working alongside members of Habitat for Humanity.
Members of DCIC assisted in building a house for Mr. James Thomas, a
resident of Bay St. Louis who lost his home when hurricane Katrina hit
that area in 2005. The members worked from 8 am until 4:30 pm every
day. Volunteers were given tasks such as building a firewall, siding the
house, installing doors and windows, painting, and putting on the roof as
well. While in Bay St. Louis, the students had the opportunity to meet and
talk with other community members who were affected by the hurricane as
well. The members also got the chance to visit New Orleans and see where
the levy broke and the destruction that resulted from that.
When I asked Kelsey Dehey, a member of DCIC why she chose to attend
the alternate winter break trip, she replied, “I always wanted to do a habitat
trip because of my mom, who always talked about it when she was in college.” Kelsey also said the best part of the trip was “meeting new people
that I wouldn’t have ever met at school, learning to do stuff that I wouldn’t
have otherwise tried, like the nail gun.” Kelsey says that a major thing that
she took away from this alternate winter break was that she “found a new
respect for the members that commit their lives to Habitat for Humanity.”
The members of DCIC returned back to Delhi on March 5th, after a funfilled, but exhausting week. If you would like to get involved in Habitat

Security Guard Training Course
As part of a continuing effort to assist those students in the criminal justice program, the criminal justice club has arranged for the New York
State Division of Criminal Justice Services “BASIC SECURITY GUARD
TRAINING COURSE”, to be offered during the Spring 2011 semester.
Students must pre-register for this eight hour basic training course. There
is a $25.00 registration fee that must be pre-paid. All students taking the
security guard course must bring a valid ID with them to enter the class.
All security personnel in NYS must be licensed by the State. At the completion of the eight hour basic course, a certificate will be issued to all
those achieving a passing score. With the DCJS certificate, you can file an
application with the Dept. of State to obtain your security guard license.
The application must include fingerprints, which can be done in Delhi, at
the Village Hall, Court Street.
The entire process for becoming a New York State licensed security guard
will be explained during the course. Application forms will be available.
After obtaining your license, you can work any where in New York State
as a security guard or security officer. There are many part-time, full time
and seasonal security jobs available, especially in the downstate areas. Information on where to look for jobs will be given out during the course.
This is a great way to build your resume and to get your “foot in the door”
for a career in the criminal justice system. For further information and
