Traffic

380 nears
By ERIKA PEDROZA
Road construction crews remain
busy with various projects across the
county.
One of the bigger endeavors, and
perhaps the most highly anticipated,
is nearing completion.
According to Texas Department of
Transportation Area Engineer Bill
Nelson, the widening of U.S. 380 east
of Decatur to the Denton County line
is slated to be finished by late September.
But he said traffic, currently
squeezed onto north side lanes, could
be split to both sets of lanes later this
month.
“There’s one segment of concrete
paving left at the Sweetwater Creek
bridge,” he added. “Once that is poured,

Veterans across the county celebrated the Fourth of July Wednesday with an Independence
Day program that included the presentation of colors and reading of the Declaration of
Independence at the Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. That evening, Victory Family
Church in Decatur put on a fireworks show enjoyed by old and young alike, including
4-year-old Desirae Bible of Decatur. The event also included bounce houses, water slides
and snow cones. For more photos, see 8A.
A 33-year-old man was flown to John
Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth
early Friday morning after a fourwheeler accident on Sunflower Road
in Paradise.
Matthew Oyster of Paradise was
heading eastbound on Sunflower Road
approximately one mile-and-a-half
from Farm Road 2123 when he crashed
the 2009 Honda TRX-700 shortly before 2 a.m.
“He was driving too fast on the road
and wasn’t able to make a curve,” said
DPS spokesperson Lonny Haschel. “He
rolled the four-wheeler and walked to
a nearby farmhouse to ask for help.”
Haschel said Oyster was not wearing a helmet and was operating a vehicle not permitted for road use.
Emergency personnel transported
Oyster to the Paradise High School
football stadium to meet the medical
helicopter.
“He was flown to JPS with serious
injuries,” Haschel said.
The crash is still under investigation.

BOYD • SPRINGTOWN
Lipstreu remembered as
compassionate educator
By KRISTEN TRIBE
Longtime Boyd I.S.D. superintendent and Springtown elementary principal
William “Bill” Frederick
Lipstreu, 88, died July 1.
His longtime secretary in
Springtown, Ruth Ann Carlisle, described him as a kind,
giving man who always put
students and faculty before
himself.
“He was more like a
grandfather to all of the
students, and they loved
him dearly,” she said. “They
hated to come to the office
(when they were in trouble)
because they knew they
had disappointed him. He
was trying to teach children to be good citizens,
good family members.”
Carlisle said he was an
example to all the students.
Lipstreu, who grew up
in Aubrey, started his education career in 1949 as a
teacher in Boyd. He became
a principal there in 1953
and was made superintendent in 1956. He served in
that post until 1970.
At that time
he moved to
Springtown
and took the
principal’s job
at a school
LIPSTREU that was later named for
him — Lipstreu Elementary.
Carlisle worked with Lipstreu for 14 years, and she
said he was in the hall every morning to greet students, who all stopped to
give him a big hug.
“He was never gruff or
rough with a child, always
gentle, always loving because he didn’t know each
one of their home situations, and that might be the
only place they got a hug,”
she said. “The kids respected him very much.”
Lipstreu also worked
hard to meet the physical
needs of the students while
they were on campus. It
wasn’t unusual for him to
give a child lunch money
from his own pocket or ensure that a child who needed a winter coat received
one.
“One time there was a
class that for the Christmas
party ... the girls decided
they wanted to wear long
dresses to school,” Carlisle
said. “One little girl didn’t
have a dress, but Mr. Lipstreu made sure she had a
long dress.”
Carlisle said he extended
that same generosity to his
staff, offering to help any
way he could with professional and sometimes personal issues.
“At one time he was kind
of like a father figure to
me,” she said.
Once when several of
her family members had
surgery or were seriously
ill, Carlisle said Lipstreu
helped her every day by
accomplishing office tasks
so she could leave early or
picking up her children and
taking them to appointments in the afternoon.
One year, unbeknownst
to each other, they came
to school at Halloween
dressed as each other, she
complete with a suit and
WISE COUNTY
tie, and he in a dress.
“We all had fun together,
but we had very serious
times, too,” she said. “He
was an educator first of all
to the children, and he ensured they had the best education, opportunities and
teachers.
“Everyone loved him.
We did crazy things ... the
teachers and staff, but we
knew our limits and bounds,
and he joined in with us,”
she said. “He wanted us to
all get along, to respect him
and love each other. And we
all did.”
Carlisle said her son is a
high school principal and
upon receiving his administrator’s certificate he said
he hoped he could be a principal like Lipstreu.
“He was a driving force,”
Carlisle said of her longtime boss.
“Back in the old days, we
had the old Southern gentleman ... that was Mr. Lipstreu ... nothing ever discolored ... always the best
of everything.”
Lipstreu was a member
of the Boyd Masonic Lodge
and the Eureka Lodge in
Springtown. He and his
wife, Nell, retired to Circle
W RV Ranch in Rockport,
but he returned to this area
last spring when congestive heart failure weakened
him.
He was preceded in death
by his wife; daughter Mykel
Blanchard; grandson Eric
Gromatzky; and brother
Otis Keen Lipstreu.
He is survived by daughter Sandy Brown and husband, Richard of Boyd;
grandsons Donny Brown
of Springtown and Barry
Brown and wife, Michelle,
of Boyd; and great-grandchildren Luke and Jaycee.
Graveside service for Lipstreu was Friday at Springtown Cemetery. A complete
obituary was published in
the July 4 edition of the
Messenger. It can also be
found online at WCMessenger.com.

As Wise County residents celebrated the
United States’ 236th birthday, many of
the firefighters found themselves battling
grassfires Wednesday evening.
The drying conditions from near tripledigit heat and fireworks combined to set
off 26 calls about grassfires to the Wise
County Sheriff ’s office.
Decatur was one of the busiest departments. Firefighters responded to nine
grassfires.
Despite the activity, Decatur Fire Chief
Michael Richardson said no structures
were damaged and things could have been
worse.
“It went pretty well,” he said. “We expected it. It was not as bad as last year. We
had about the same amount of calls, but
the good thing was the humidity stayed up
and it wasn’t as explosively flammable.”
Most of the fires in the county were less
than one-half acre and slow-moving. Richardson said fireworks were a likely culprit
for most of the fires.
Decatur had extra help on duty for the
holiday and brought in more help for the
evening that also included five medical
emergencies.
The East Wise department was also quite
busy on the Fourth, responding to six fires.
“At one time, we had three going,” said
East Wise Fire Chief David Plankey. “We
were taxed pretty well.
“The humidity level was low enough that
a lot of the sparks were setting off fires. We
were fortunate it wasn’t lower.”
Plankey said his department’s quick response kep mo
East Wise, Paradise, Rhome, Newark,

activity occurred after 8:30 p.m.
‘NO REFUSAL’ RESULTS IN 6 ARRESTS
County Attorney James Stainton reported six arrests through the no refusal
program July 3 and 4, a drop from 12 last
year.
“This was the first time we did it when
it was midweek. Clearly, it was going to be
less than if you did it on a weekend,” he
said.
Stainton said he also hopes the numbers
have dropped because “people are getting
the message.”
Last year, no refusal weekend started
Friday night, July 1, and ran through the
early morning hours of Tuesday, July 5.

PAINTING ON THE FUN — Tamme Byers paints the face of 6-year-old Valerie Cruz of Rhome at last
weekend’s Music in the Park event at the Rhome Family Park.
Music in the Park
gathers big crowd
By ERIKA PEDROZA
Pleasant weather and a community effort meshed well to
make the city of Rhome’s inaugural Music in the Park event
a success Saturday at Rhome
Family Park.
“It was absolutely wonderful,”
Rhome City Secretary Ramah
Burns said. “I would say there
were 350 to 400 people out here.
At one point, there were so many
people you couldn’t see through
the crowd.”
The event, spearheaded by
Mayor Pro Tem Jo Ann Wilson
and the rest of the Rhome City
Council, came together through
the generosity of the community, Burns said.
“The council voted to do the
event, but Jo Ann did a lot,” she
said. “From the planning to the
shopping — she’s a little worker
bee. She can organize anything,
and she’s so good at it. We also
had many community members
involved.”
Mayor and firefighter Chris
Moore supervised a water slide,
donated by the fire department;
Tammy Byers of Woodhaven
Bank did face painting; and Giant Burger donated hot dogs
and buns.
There were also bounce houses, snow cones by Chilly Penguin, raffle drawings for prizes
donated by several businesses
and performances by Ronnie
Moore of Rhome and Kim Saling
of Decatur.
“She sings like an angel,”
Burns said.
City officials also manned a
table filled with promotional
material for local businesses.
“We’d been talking about it
forever, to do a Saturday in the
Park so people could come enjoy
the park and listen to music,”
Burns said. “Then it evolved into
a time to promote businesses. It
worked out really well.”
So well, that the council will
look at an encore.
“We hope to make it an annual
event,” Burns said. “The council
will look at maybe doing something at the end of every month.
Maybe not to the extent of free
food and all that, something on
a smaller scale. We’ll just see.
But everyone was so happy. It
was a great opportunity to enjoy
our park.”
Renovations to the park, funded by a Texas Parks and Wildlife
matching grant, include a playground, butterfly garden and xeriscape.
“To see families sitting, all
over that park, it was just lovely,” Burns said. “We had such
a great time. We were thrilled
for the turnout and are excited
about doing it again.”

OPINION
OUR VIEWS
Crying shame to have cheating in America’s pastime
By PHIL MAJOR
“There’s no crying in
baseball,” the down-andout coach famously admonished his female team in “A
League of Their Own.”
But there is cheating.
We like to call it America’s pastime, but that requires us to embrace a nod,
nod, wink, wink philosophy
about our beloved game.
I am a baseball fan, nay,
junkie, and don’t have a
problem admitting that in
public. I also acknowledge
there are legions who don’t
like, or understand, or appreciate this game and its
nuances. I just ignore them
and figure they don’t know
what they’re missing. To
each his own.
There is a certain beauty
to it, couched in terms of
endless, breezy summer’s
evenings that just cannot be
replicated upon rectangular
fields with identical goals at
each end and a ticking clock.
But scandal has been a
part of baseball about as
long as there has been baseball, or at least, since there
has been big money attached to it.
The Blacksox scandal was
so pervasive that it dragged
down an apparently innocent Shoeless Joe Jackson
and cost a great player his
rightful legacy as a star,
rather than as a cad.
Steroids
have sullied
the reputations of many
other bright
stars.
Clemens, Sosa,
MAJOR
Palmeiro and
McGwire
top my list of favorites who
likely won’t take otherwise
deserved spots in the Hall of
Fame.
Pete Rose was as fierce a
competitor as ever walked
the diamond, a throwback
to Rogers Hornsby, Honus
Wagner and Ty Cobb. But
it appears his place in Cooperstown won’t be in bronze
in the main hall because he
couldn’t resist his gambling
urge.
And now we have those
individual plays, wrongly
called, being put in the glaring spotlight of Youtube.
The latest, a pop foul
that leaked into the stands,
called as an out, when a fan
was the one who came up
with the ball, not the headover-heels player.
It has correctly been pointed out that this wouldn’t be
tolerated in professional
golf. The player would call
the mistake himself: “Ump,
I didn’t catch it.”
Instead he slunk back to
the dugout with a sheepish
grin.
Kind of reminds me of another movie line, from the
football coach in “The Last
Picture Show.” Urging the
chain crew to stretch it just
a little to keep the opposition from making a key first
down. It’s OK if it’s for the
home team, he said.
The explanations emanating from the latest faux
pas are a bit disconcerting.
The game’s hard enough
and you take what breaks
you can get, was one theme.
There are plenty of close
plays, and some go for you
and others against you, was
another.
Throwing in a little honesty seemed to take a back
seat. In a game that includes
spitballs, pine tar incidents,
spiking and brush backs/
beanings, I suppose I should
not have expected more.
Still it’s a little disappointing that someone with
the authority to make it
stick hasn’t stepped to the
figurative plate and demanded — or perhaps suggested — that baseball try
to come clean. At least move
in that direction.
The impact of those winks
and nods upon impressionable young fans doesn’t
bode well for the game or
its reputation.
Perhaps it wouldn’t be
the same game without its
darker side, but I think I’d
rather have some occasional crying. Oh wait, that’s
called the NBA.

College
appreciates DISD’s
hospitality
As dean of the Weatherford College Wise County campus, I want
to take this opportunity to thank
Rod Townsend and the Decatur
ISD Board of Trustees for the
hospitality and support we have
received as tenants housed in the
beautiful and historical former
Decatur High School located on
South Cates Street.
As you may know, we are in the
process of moving into the new
Weatherford College Wise County
campus. We are excited for the
future of Wise County students
as we begin a new era in a stateof-the-art educational facility.
However, the purpose of this
letter is to thank Mr. Townsend
for being, what we consider, an
understanding landlord, a caring
educational professional and a
visionary leader who shared the
concerns for the future of education in Wise County. His is not
an easy job, and even with that,
he was always there for my latenight or early-morning calls when
there were problems with water
on the floor, no heat in the winter
or no cooling during the summer.
He always went out of his way to
see that students and employees
were able to do their jobs in a
comfortable learning environment.
I would also like to mention
Deputy Superintedent Gary
Micinski, Maintenance Director
Merl Pryor and all the great staff
that helped us through the past
two-and-a-half years at this current location. Many student lives
were changed during this time,
and we thank Rod, Gary and Merl
for their part in making this happen for students.
While we will be out of the
Decatur building in August and
starting fall 2012 classes at our
new campus, we will remember
the time in that building with
fond and positive memories in the
history of Weatherford College
Wise County.
More importantly, we will
remember the support and
friendship that Rod Townsend
provided to all of our employees
and students and this great facility. Our thanks also to each of
you as trustees for your support
and understanding of our interim
campus needs.

Opinions can
change over time
At the 2009 Conservative Political Action Conference a 13-yearold lad who, precisely as virtually
all youngsters invariably follow
the religion of their parents, followed the political persuasions
of his parents. With little doubt,
young Jonathan Krohn’s words
made Republican Party members
experience warm, fuzzy feelings.
As one would anticipate, his
speech, that was seen by party
faithful as a rallying cry for
conservatism, went viral on the
Internet, and he was immediately
pegged as a rising star in the
conservative Republican world.
To cap that off and probably make
the Newt beam, he wrote a book
titled “Defining Conservatism.”
According to Krohn, he still
watches that speech from time to
time, but it “makes him cringe.”
Now at 17, he has clearly matured
a bit and had a change of mind
and in his own words, “I think it
was naive. It’s a 13-year-old kid
saying stuff that he had heard
for a long time. I live in Georgia.
We’re inundated with conservative talk in Georgia … The speech
was something that a 13-year-old
does. You haven’t formed all your
opinions. You’re really defeating
yourself if you think you have all
of your ideas in your head when
you were 12 or 13. It’s impossible.
You haven’t done enough.”
To that I would add, one hasn’t
learned enough to form a mature
and valid opinion about much of
anything. When asked for whom
he would vote today if he was of
age, he replied “Obama.”
When Diane, my lovely bride
for the past 46 years, and I were
deeply involved in the North
Carolina Republican Party during
the Reagan era, she was the Teen
Age Republican (TAR) adviser
for Rockingham County, and I
was the official North Carolina
“Reagan-Bush 1984” campaign
photographer.
She was so popular that during
the state Republican Convention
she was in line to be elected as
the North Carolina State TAR adviser. During the convention she
was interviewed by Sen. Helms’
“people” who informed her that
if she accepted the position she
could not, must not, have a public
opinion that was in any way contrary to that of Helms’.
The interview lasted almost
three hours and when she rejoined me, I asked her what happened. She informed me about the
restrictions on her voice and said
she refused the position, which
made her 10-feet-tall in my estimation. She still has and uses her
voice. What a woman!

Alvord ISD renews
agreements, hires 3
By BOB BUCKEL
The Alvord ISD Board of
Trustees hired three new
teachers last Thursday as
they disposed of a “fairly routine” meeting agenda in swift
fashion.
Joining the staff for the
upcoming school year will be
Carrie Walker, who will teach
fifth grade science at the elementary school; Sharon Sackett, who will teach agriculture
at the high school; and Pete
Hart, who will teach social
studies at the high school level and handle coaching duties
at the high school and junior
high campuses.
With several bids and policy updates on the agenda,
the only new policy was one
relating to food allergies. Superintendent Bill Branum
said TASB (Texas Association
of School Boards) policy update 94 implements training
and other program features
regarding food allergies as a
result of legislative action in
the last session.
Other policy updates dealt
with Internet safety, governing student and staff use, and
a series of updates routinely
sent each year after review
by the TASB legal staff and
put into legal language for
districts throughout Texas to
adopt.
The board approved budget
amendments to move funds
within the current year budget and accept donations for
the
concession/announcing
booth at the baseball and
softball fields. Branum said
the moves do not impact the
bottom line but simply allow
money to be moved where it is
needed.
The board also approved
its annual agreement with
Weatherford College to offer
dual-credit courses through
Alvord High School. Weatherford College’s new Wise County Campus is due to open for
students this August.
Bids were called for on instructional, custodial, maintenance, cafeteria and athletic
supplies as well as propane
and fuel. The board took no
action on a TASB advocacy
resolution and declined to
nominate anyone for the
TASB board of directors.
There was no executive session.

made with landowners in the
watershed, and 99 conservation plans have been written
for property owners.
Of those, 28 were funded
through special funds from
the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), and
another 11 through regular
county NRCS funds.
Additional funds may become available for more projects.
The special project is aimed
at reducing runoff pollution in
the lake watershed through
traditional soil conservation
practices and is being administered through the Wise
County NRCS office.
Most of the lake lies in Tarrant County, but its watershed is principally in Wise
County.
In other business, the
board tabled a request for
assistance
from
Randy
Bounds. After onsite investigation, it was determined
that the drainage project
requires additional work on
neighboring property, and
the project could be revisited
if cooperation can be gained
from neighboring landowners.

4 indicted in scrap
metal thefts
Four people have been indicted in connection with repeated thefts of scrap metal
at Elite Metal Fabricators
in Newark.
Paul Timothy Frank, 50,
of Azle; Phillip Kyle Simmons, 27, of Haltom City;
Stephenie Ann Frank, 21,
of Haltom City; and Jesse
Clyde Jones Jr., 23, of Haltom City were all indicted
for theft of property worth
$1,500 to $20,000, a state
jail felony, by a Wise County
grand jury June 21.
The business had been hit
in February and then twice
in April. After the second
theft, business owners Robert and Jay Darter hired a
security guard, and he alerted police when Jones was
seen loading metal into the
bed of a pickup in the early
morning hours of April 25.
Jones was arrested at the
scene.
Security tapes had recorded four suspects – three
men and one woman – stealing from the location on the
afternoon of April 22. The
same four apparently had
hit the location on a Sunday
afternoon in February, according to the security tape.
Jones was caught three
days after the April 22 theft.
Open since 1999, Elite
Metal employs approximately 30 people and is the
biggest private employer in
Newark.

God’s written word to mankind, the Holy Bible, provides us with good advice on financial
management. It contains stories about rich men and poor men as well as proverbs with sharp
insights. As Psalm 24:1 tells us: “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness . . .” We know that
everything in God’s creation belongs to Him. Without Him, nothing would be possible. Deuteronomy
8:18 tells us: “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God; for it is he that giveth thee power to get
wealth . . . .” To show our respect and gratitude, we should handle money wisely. The Bible cannot
tell one exactly where to invest one’s money, but it can tell how to be one who saves money, spends
wisely, and plans ahead. Typically, we have to work for our earnings. Luke 14:28 asks of us: “For
which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and countest the cost, whether he have
sufficient to finish it?” In other words, shouldn’t we have a plan or a budget in order to make sure
we have enough money? We should always figure a way out of any type of debt that we accrue and
work at not living beyond our means. Proverbs 22:7 reminds us: “The rich ruleth over the poor, and
the borrower is servant to the lender.” This is another way of saying that if we are indebted, we are
enslaved to our lender. Most of us, at some point in our life, incur some type of debt, but the key is
not becoming so in debt that we cannot see our way out of debt and overcome that enslavement. We
should not be in debt for each and every thing. If we do, maybe we should consider the possibility
that we might be being greedy. “ . . . Take heed, and beware of covetousness; for a man’s life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke 12:15).” I Timothy 6:10
tells us: “For the love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred
from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” Above all, we should always put
God before money by seeking his wisdom and doing what is right. By doing so, we will reap a definite
reward: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you (Matthew 6:33).” This is what the Lord says in Jeremiah 9:23-24: “Let not the wise
man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches,
but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who
exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, . . .” Just think what
our Nation’s leaders would gain if they would only follow God’s Word and ask for his wisdom. Please
seek God’s Word for guidance on how to handle your own financial matters and pray for our leaders
to resolve the financial situation our nation is struggling with.

DECATUR
‘No Mow’ signs on
cemetery agenda
By PHIL MAJOR
A proposal to allow grave owners in Oaklawn Cemetery to place “No Mow” signs on
individual plots during the spring bluebonnet
season will be reconsidered Monday.
The Decatur Cemetery Board meets at 10
a.m. at City Hall.
The proposal was tabled at the May meeting to allow time to get cost estimates for the
signs.
At issue is the controversial decision this
year to mow bluebonnets that have been a
feature of the cemetery for more than three
decades.
At the May meeting, the board accepted an
offer from Dr. Charles Cocanougher to seed
an unused 12-acre area of the cemetery with
bluebonnets.
In the past the bluebonnets had been allowed to remain until they went to seed, which
made it virtually impossible to mow other
weeds and grass in large sections of the cemetery. The change in policy was made prior to
the city awarding the 2012 mowing contract.

Lone star ...
Continued from page 1A
Last Thursday, Vilja, 16,
listened intently as Decatur
Rotarian Curtis Creswell
gave her a quick lesson on
riding a horse, including how
to make the horse turn to the
right or left or how to stop.
“Don’t kick her,” he instructed, “or she’ll go.”
By “go” he meant take off
in a gallop, something a firsttime rider might not want to
experience.
Vilja climbed atop the
horse, took the reigns and
slowly began to inch the
horse forward. Despite Curtis’ instructions on how to
make the horse turn, it appears that “Ashley” was content to make her own path.
“She might have trouble
with my Arkansas dialect,”
Curtis joked of the possible
“lost in translation” instructions.
Her new friend Miranda
took the next ride, and Vilja
snapped several photos to
add to her ever-growing collection.
When asked what she
liked most about her visit to
Texas, Vilja quickly replied,
“I enjoy the weather and the
people. They are so nice.”
One might think the heat
would be a big shock. High
temperatures in her hometown now are around 70 degrees, which is about as hot
as the temperatures will get
in summer. However, winters are long, she said, with
temperatures regularly well
below freezing.
She seemed to want to soak
up as much of the 100-degree
weather as she could.
“We were in San Antonio
and headed for the shade,
and she wanted to stay out
in the sun,” Mike said.
The food is also quite dif-

used to. She said she is not
used to all the fast food options. Her favorite of the
bunch? Five Guys Hamburgers.
The cowboy hat was also a
recent purchase, made on a
trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards where she saw a rodeo.

of the year.
“We’ll have to reconstruct
the road surface, but that is
temperature-dependent,” he
said. “Since we’ll be doing
this in the winter, that project may get delayed.”
OTHER PROJECTS
Work crews are also busy
repairing a few existing
bridges across the county.
The repair of two bridges
on Farm Road 2123 near
Cottondale has been slowed
due to many issues, Nelson
said.
“We are a few months behind schedule, but they are
projected to be finished between October and December, barring any other issues,” he said.
On the north side of the
county, the combining of two
bridges into one on Farm
Road 1655 in Alvord should
be completed by the first of
the year.
“By as early as next
month, we should have traffic running on a portion of
that bridge so we can finish
it out,” Nelson said.
Later this month, crews
will also begin resurfacing
U.S. 81/287 near Alvord and
Texas 101 in Chico north to
the Montague County line.
Nelson’s crews will also be
managing the reconstruction of Texas 114 near Farm
Road 156 in Denton County.
“But we don’t expect that
to begin until the first of
Because she speaks English, she communicates well

sometimes when he talks to
Vilja, Miranda will repeat it
and she’ll understand.
As for Miranda, she should
also be able to communicate well with Vilja’s family,
since they also speak English. Still, Miranda has been
practicing her Finnish. So
far, she said, she knows one
phrase that translates to
“Are you hungry?”
Mike and Christine admit they are a little nervous about sending their
daughter across the Atlantic
Ocean to a foreign country,
but they are thankful that
she will be accompanied by a
new friend.
“She’s a really good kid,”
Mike said of Vilja. “We’ve really enjoyed having her over
here.”
In addition to visiting the
state capitol, the Alamo, Six
Flags (twice), local malls and
even Southfork ranch, Vilja
was to accompany the Neagles on one more trip before
the exchange shifts back to
Finland.
“We’re taking her camping and will introduce her to
smores,” Christine said.
Before heading back to
Chico, Vilja climbed back on
the horse for another ride.
This time, instead of being
led where the horse wanted
to go, Ashley responded to
Vilja’s subtle commands.
“There you go. I told you
you’d do it,” Creswell said
with a smile.
It was just another Texas
lesson learned during this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
And for Miranda, her international adventures and
lessons began Friday.

got plenty to do until then.
We’re going to stay busy.”

schedule is to put traffic on
the last bit later this month
so that all eastbound traffic is on the south side and
all westbound traffic on the

The contractor will then
begin clean-up work —
implementing crossovers,
removing temporary pavements and resurfacing the
Decatur end of the project
— toward the scheduled
completion date.
Nelson said the Decatur
office will manage and inspect the widening of 380 in
Denton County.
“Because we are just now
getting started, it’s hard to
pinpoint a completion date,”
he said. “But they are getting work done quickly.”
BRIDGE AT 114, 51
The bridge at Texas 114
over Farm Road 51 South,
west of Boyd, has begun to
take shape.
“The dirt for header banks
was hauled in,” Nelson
said. “We’ve poured some
columns. People driving
through in the next couple
of weeks will see the bridge
start to take shape.”
Currently, Texas 114 traffic is split onto what will be
the entrance and exit ramps.
According to Nelson, the
project will be completed before or shortly after the first

VIEW OF SUCCESS — Dayna DeProspero and her fiance, Chuck Nichols, will be cheering on her son-in-law, Jonathan Horton, and the USA gymnastics team at the
Olympic games later this month in London.
Cheers for London
Alvord residents’ son-in-law tries for Olympic gold
By RICHARD GREENE
When U.S. gymnast Jonathan Horton takes the floor in London in a few
weeks in search of an Olympic medal, he’ll wear a piece of athletic tape
around his ring finger in the place of
his wedding band.
“That means so much to me as a
mother-in-law — that symbol,” said
Dayna DeProspero from her Alvord
home.
The Houston gymnast and twotime Olympic medalist married
DeProspero’s daughter shortly after
the Beijing games in 2008. Now, two
of his biggest fans, DeProspero and
her fiance, Chuck Nichols, reside in
Alvord where they plan to cheer Horton and Team USA on to gold.
“He got a team bronze in Beijing,
but this team is much better,” DeProspero predicted.
Her daughter met Horton on her
recruiting visit to the University of
Oklahoma, where he was already a
champion. Haley was following in her
mother’s footsteps attending OU. She
became a national finalist and was
named the school’s most valuable
gymnast her senior year in 2009.
She and Horton married later that
year.
“He flew in from Beijing, and we
went out straight wedding shopping,”
DeProspero recalled. “An elderly lady
recognized him from watching on TV.
and he pulls out his silver medal from
the high bar and shows it to her.”
Haley is continuing her education
in Houston where her husband trains
full time.
“She was torn about studying medicine at OU or coming back to Houston,” Deprospero said.
DeProspero said the newlyweds
have been busy between medical
school and Horton’s training. They
are also working to buy a house.
“There’s never a dull moment or
still moment,” DeProspero said.
Training for a world-class athlete
like Horton is a full-time job. He
works out in the morning and evening.
“It’s every day for two or three
hours in the morning and evening,”
Nichols said. “He also has a diet that
he doesn’t deviate from.”
DeProspero said her family’s background in the sport helps Haley be
understanding of the commitment it
takes to compete on the world stage.
DeProspero runs the University of
Gymnastics in Plano and Sherman.
“It’s not just a commitment for the
athlete but also the family,” DeProspero said. “Haley understands that.”
Nichols and DeProspero, who plan
to marry after the Olympics, made
the trip to San Jose last week to
watch Horton compete in the U.S.
Gymnastics Trials. Just months after
a career-threatening leg injury, Horton fought back to finish third overall and make the team as its oldest
member at 26.
“It was extremely emotional watching him,” DeProspero said. “We know
how hard he works.”
At the trials, Horton’s family wore
green shirts with his name on them
provided by one of his sponsors, BP.
Nichols said a group of girls stopped
him and asked if he was with Horton, and he said yes. He then got him
to send a text to the girls thanking
them for being a fan.
Nichols said they also met a woman who had been at the trials four
years before with her daughter, who
was trying to catch the attention of
Nastia Liukin. When the little girl
couldn’t make contact with Liukin
in the crowd, she broke down to cry.

Duo to star in TGCA games
By RICHARD GREENE
Two Wise County standouts will star among the
state’s best next week in
Arlington.
Decatur graduate Joey
Redwine will play for the
West in the Texas Girls
Coaches Association’s Class
3A, 2A, A volleyball game
Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at
Lamar High School.
Paradise graduate Laura
Wilson will represent the
Red team in the 3A, 2A, 1A
softball game Tuesday at
4:30 p.m. at the Workman
Complex.
Redwine, an all-state selection, led Decatur to an
undefeated run to a District 7-3A crown and a trip
to the Class 3A Region I
quarterfinal for a second
straight year. She doled
out 1,060 assists, averaging 20 per match. She also
led the team in blocks with
224.
“I’m really excited. it’ll
be a lot of fun,” Redwine
said about getting back on
the floor.
In the fall, she’ll play at
St. Gregory’s University
in Shawnee, Okla. She reports Aug. 10.
“I haven’t been playing,”
Redwine admitted. “This
will help me get ready.”
It will also be the last
time for the two-sport star,
who was the 7-3A MVP in
basketball, to represent
Decatur.
“It’s sad and exciting at
the same time,” she said.
Wilson hopes to get in
the pitcher’s circle Tuesday. In her senior season
at Paradise, she helped the
Lady Panthers make the
area round of the Class 2A
Region II playoffs. Wilson
posted a 14-4 record with
a 1.68 ERA. She struck
out 219 batters on her way
to earning District 10-2A
Pitcher of the Year.
“I really am looking forward to it,” Wilson said
about the all-star game.
There’s so many other people from bigger schools. I
want to take on some of the
better girls.”
Wilson is headed to Waco
to play at McLennan Community College in the fall.
Wilson said the all-star
game is one last chance to
give thanks to her coaches
and teammates for a great
senior year.
“This year was one of the
best ever for Paradise,” Wilson said.

Horton stopped, talked with
her and posed for a picture.
“She’s now a big Jon Horton fan,” DeProspero said.
“But that’s who he is. He’s
a good and grounded guy —
very down-to-earth.”
Along with BP, Horton
has picked up a few other
sponsorships. He’s in a pair
of commercials for BP and
BMW that are currently
running in advance of the
Olympics. He’s also been in
recent issues of Vogue and
GQ.
Because of their postings on Facebook, many of
Nichols’ and DeProspero’s
friends are fast becoming
fans of Horton.
“One of my old classmates
that lives north of Amarillo
texted me, ‘who is this Jon
Horton that I’m posting
about?’” Nichols said. “I told
him, and he said ‘I’ll root for
him.’”
Chuck and Dayna are
holding out hope that they
can join her daughter and
Horton in London for the
games, but it’s an expensive undertaking. Flights
are more than $1,000, and
rooms are costing that much
for a night. Tickets to each
session are also quite costly.
If they can’t make the
games, they hope to have a
watching party at Bono’s to
see Horton with that tape on
his ring finger bring home a
medal.
The men’s gymnastics
competition begins July 28
from London with qualifications. The final events are
Aug. 7 with individual competitions in the horizontal
bar and parallel bars.

FEATURE PROPERTY
This is a lovely, turn of the century, Victorian home that has been
renovated to expose the true beauty of that time period. From the rich hue
of the dark wood in the entry hall to the elegant wainscot wallpaper in
many of the rooms, this home is a ‘must see’. The parlor and dining room
boast French doors and elaborate ceiling tile of that era. The front door
is embellished with a small brass plate with the original owner’s name in
1905. For more information call Fama 817-781-2481
