Houston Money Week 2015 Impact Report
Houston Money Week
2015 Impact Report
H
ouston Money Week is a community-wide financial education initiative that empowers families and individuals to be
successful with their financial choices. HMW serves individuals, families, veterans and small business owners across the
greater Houston area, offering free financial education and raising awareness of available resources in the community. Each
year in April, HMW partners—businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits, government agencies and media
outlets—come together to emphasize the importance of financial education, inform consumers where they can get assistance,
and provide free educational seminars and activities. Although the activities are open to all demographics and income levels,
historically HMW serves persons from primarily low and moderate income backgrounds.
With almost 200 events at schools, banks, places of worship and other community hubs, it would be impossible to tell the
story of every Houston Money Week program. Here is a 2015 snapshot of the impact that HMW partners are making in the
Houston community every year.
Educating
yThird Grade Reading Day
Houstonians
HMW’s K-12 Committee, in collaboration with Houston ISD,
sponsored a financial literacy-based “Third Grade Reading Day”
at eight HISD elementary schools. Employee volunteers from
Woodforest National Bank and Cadence Bank served as readers.
Each third-grade student received a book to take home, and each
school library received a set of financial literacy books with a
corresponding curriculum. Over 900 books were donated in all!

utilize financial education to improve your future?” One middle school and three high school

art contest addressing the theme, “Smarter Texans Save,”
for K-12 students at Houston area schools. The top three

school seniors learned how to budget and make responsible
financial decisions at HMW’s annual “100 Teens” event. For
the third year in a row, professional football player Danieal
Manning spoke to the students about good financial habits
and the benefits of financial education and planning.
‘‘
I enjoyed
seeing the
enthusiasm on
the faces of
the students. It
was incredibly
rewarding to know
that we made a
positive impact on
their lives, especially
at such a young age.
It’s really never too
early for students
to start learning
the financial skills
that will set them
on the path to
success.”

Univision Communications. Univision’s Houston affiliates brought HMW 2015 to the
attention of thousands of local Latino viewers and listeners. TV station Univision 45
Houston extended invitations to HMW events through its local Sunday edition of
“Contigo en la Comunidad.” Univision radio partners also helped get the word out.
Especially beneficial was a live radio remote at HMW’s “Dimes into Dollars” event,
which drew a large number of Latino participants. Thanks to Univision’s commitment,
HMW nearly tripled its visibility among Spanish-speaking Houstonians!
“
In the years that I have been a part of the Houston Money Week initiative, I have seen
nonprofits, companies and even the mayor working together to bring financial literacy to
Houstonians. We have done a lot in a very short amount of time. I can’t help but think that the
things that we get right here can be reproduced in other cities across the U.S.”

The 2015 HMW experience was humbly rewarding. As a partner since 2010, God’s Money

represented more than 65% of attendees, consistent with previous years. Programs at
schools and universities reached 25% of survey participants in the 18–24 age group. Events

F
or seven years now, Houston
Money Week partners have
joined forces to bring attention to
the financial education and asset
building needs of the Houston
region. Each year brings new signs
of the positive impact their efforts
are having,
One of the greatest testaments
to the success of HMW efforts
occurred in January 2015, when
the Corporation for Enterprise
Development (CFED) released
its first-ever Family Assets Count
report focusing specifically on
Houston.The report underscores
the critical need for finanical
education in the region.
A key finding from the CFED
report is that 20 percent of
Houston households live in
poverty and 52 percent are
financially vulnerable. Those
“liquid asset poor” households
do not have enough savings to
live above the poverty line for
even three months if they lose a
job, face a medical crisis or suffer
another income disruption.
Helping households like these
gain better financial footing is
what HMW is all about.

Joseph Bowman, Easter Seals Greater Houston. Since 2008, Joseph has been a
dedicated participant with Houston Money Week. This year, he directed his efforts
toward the “Dimes into Dollars” event. He is a faithful attendee at partner meetings,
and his “can do” spirit encourages others to step up their efforts.
Deborah Duncan, host of “Great Day Houston” (KHOU Channel 11). For the past
three years, Deborah has faithfully advocated for Houston Money Week by using
her prime time morning TV show to help create awareness and promote financial
education for the Houston area. Her support using her media platform is invaluable
and provides heightened visibility for HMW.
Lucretia Jelks, Wesley Community Center. Lucretia demonstrated outstanding
management and leadership skills as she led HMW’s Adult Education Committee
to successfully complete the first “Dimes into Dollars” event at the Neighborhood
Centers-Ripley House. She has been a consistent participant at HMW partner
meetings.
Amy Krell, Capital Bank. Amy immediately engaged with Houston Money Week,
looking for ways to help promote its mission. She created a volunteer initiative

Houston Children’s Festival. Amy and her team were well organized in staffing the
different stations and provided a real helping hand!
William “Bill” Pitre, Star Realty. Bill has completed his third year serving as a
