Barry County voters Vacant business in Purdy catches fire
pass county sales tax

Less than 18 percent of
Barry County’s registered
voters made their way to the
polls in Tuesdays election.
With 19,990 registered voters in the county, only 3,514
ballots were cast throughout
the 19 precincts.
The county’s voters
were asked once again to
consider a sales tax increase
to prevent deep and drastic cuts to the county’s future budget. This time, the
tax passed by less than 200
votes. Those voting in favor
of the tax totaled 52.54 percent at 1,832 votes. Those
voting against the tax were
47.46 percent with 1,655
votes.
With the tax increase
passing, the Barry County
Commission looks to give
their attention to Public
Safety by reinstating officers who were let go due to
budget cuts, work on updating the Sheriff’s Department
fleet of patrol cars and hire
an assistant in the Prosecuting Attorney’s office.
In the Barry County
Health Department Board
of Trustees race, voters were
asked to vote for three candidates. Voters elected incumbents John Starchman and
Jan Thomas and newcomer
Stormy Holtzman to the
Board of Trustees. Starchman lead the way receiving
30.5 percent of the votes, followed by Holtzman with 26
percent, Jan Thomas with 25
percent and Paul Bingham
with 17.9 percent.

Community Bank in Shell Knob
Freedom
Bank

Southern Missouri and Community Bank of Shell Knob
and Golden have mutually
entered into an agreement
wherein the assets and deposits of Community bank
will be purchased by Freedom Bank.
This transfer is scheduled to take place at the close
of business on Friday, April
5, 2013. Both Shell Knob
and Golden locations will
reopen on Monday, April 8,
2013 as Freedom Bank of
Southern Missouri. Freedom Bank of Southern Missouri is a locally owned bank
founded in 1999.
Freedom Bank will now
have five locations in Cassville, Seligman, Golden,
Shell Knob and Willard.
Freedom Bank offers a wide
variety of products and services with competitive rates
on both loans and deposits.

Local fire departments responded to a fire at the former bar, Tres Amigos, on Highway 37
in Purdy just before 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. What was once an airport hanger has seen
many businesses in and out throughout the decade. At the time of the fire, the building was vacant. Reports indicate that there was no electricity running at the time of the fire.

Incumbents win in Cassville’s elections
Rachael Freeman
Tuesday’s election results favored incumbents in
Cassville’s municipal races.
Bill Shiveley will continue
his role as the mayor of Cassville after soundly defeating
opponent Tracy Lannum.
Shiveley took over as
Mayor a year ago after the
resignation of Bill Hill.
Shiveley receivied 85 percent of the votes cast by
Cassville residents.
The Cassville R-IV
School District Board of
Education races were much
closer. Voters had the opportunity to vote for two candidates. Voters selected to continue with tradition, voting in
incumbents Greg Allen and
Hal Smith.
Allen took favor with
the majority of voters at
nearly 39 percent. The race
between Smith and Wade
Hermansen was much closer
with Smith coming out on
time with 31 percent of the
votes next to Hermansen’s
29 percent. That race was decided by only 63 votes.
Allen has served a total
of six terms (18 years) on
Cassville’s Board of Education. His terms have not been
served consecutively. Smith
has served a total of two consecutive terms (six years) on
the Board.

New website of Barry County Circuit Clerk
Craig Williams, Barry
County Circuit Clerk/Recorder of Deeds, advises of
a new technology now in
operation in the Recorder’s
Office. This new technology not only allows for a
more streamlined process
for recording documents in
the office, but also enables
the general public to search
real property records online.
The system allows the user
to search and review Grantor/Grantee (Seller/Buyers)
indexes. If the user desired
to view or print documents,
they may purchase either
a one-day use or a monthly
subscription from the site,
which will allow them to
print documents at the cost
of $1.00 per page. This service can be accessed online
through the Barry County
Circuit Clerk/Recorder website at www.barrycountyccrd.com.
Also available is a free
service called “Property
Check.” This service allows
Barry County property owners to receive notification, either by e-mail or text, when a
document with their name is
recorded in the Barry County Recorder’s Office. Please
visit the Barry County Recorder website and follow
the “Property Check” link
for more details and to register for this free service.

Screening for 3 and 4 year old children in the Cassville R-IV District is scheduled for April 5th & 12th,
2013. Parents of 3 and 4 year old children may call
the primary office at 847-2445 to schedule an appointment. The DIAL-III will screen children in the
following areas: concepts, language, and motor development. In addition to the DIAL-III each child’s
vision, hearing, and articulation will be screened. The
screening results will be shared with the parents. Children who will be eligible to attend kindergarten for

Local retired military resident
starts kid camp for fallen warriors kids
Kids of Our Heroes-Adventure Camp (KOOH-AC)
is located in Jenkins. This
project was started by husband and wife team Darrell
and Michele Hovland, both
retired from the US Army
and combat veterans.
In 2013, they plan on
running three (3) camps
during the summer months.
Each camp is a 6-day event
for kids of fallen or severely
wounded warriors from Iraq
or Afghanistan. The KOOHAC goal in this endeavor is
to provide opportunities for
positive adventure engagements while learning coping skills necessary to help
process the grief and find
encouragement in a safe and
supportive environment.
This camp is open to all
military kids from Active,
Guard or Reserve forces,
between the ages of 11- 17

Mercy Hospital Auxiliary receives donations
The KOOH-AC camp
site is primitive with campers
sleeping in tents, on cots and
utilizing an outdoor shower
trailer. Meals will be cooked
campfire style, breakfast and
dinner meals will begin with
respects rendered while raising or lowering The Flag of
the United States of America, a prayer, and a sit-down
meal will be shared in an
open-air dining facility. The
sleeping area is accessible by
crossing a 100 ft. suspended
foot bridge.
When the Hovlands decided to do this endeavor,
they had no idea their camp
was going to be so unique, if
not a “one-of-its-kind” camp.
Where KOOH-AC differentiates from other camps afforded to fallen or wounded
warrior kids is that KOOHAC camp is 6-day event,
parent or guardian does not
accompany the camper, and
the camp’s underpinning is
counseling, whereby coping
skills are incorporated into a
daily thrilling adventure.
who have either lost a parent
in combat or have a severely
wounded parent as a result of
combat.
All KOOH-AC staff
are retired, wounded and/
or disabled combat veterans except one civilian who
is a license professional
counselor (LPC). Additionally, the camp director, COL
(RET) Michele Hovland is
a wounded combat veteran,
a provisional license professional counselor (PLPC)
and currently a readjustment
counselor therapist with the
VA Vets Center. All KOOHAC Board of Directors are
veterans.
The outdoor camp is
designed around an adventure, paired with a counseling theme that is merged into
the daily activities. Nightly
campfire groups will reinforce the counseling theme
and provide an array of coping techniques that campers can use to guide them
through their awareness,
struggles and ultimately towards comfort and relief.
The Mercy Hospital
Cassville Auxiliary recently
donated over $4,200.00 to
the hospital for the purchase
of a Sci-Fit Pro2 Total Body
Exerciser. Cardiopulmonary
Rehab, the Fitness Center
and Mercy co-workers will
all get to use this equipment.

State Highway Patrol, Lt.
John Lueckenhoff came to a
crash on Highway 39 three
miles south of Aurora at 8:45
p.m. Travis Amos, age 35, of
Aurora, driver, Anya Amos
age 32, occupant, and Derrick
Brown, age 27, from Ozark,
were involved in the crash.
Amos attempted to overtake
Brown as he turned left into
the path of Amos, striking
his vehicle in the rear. Both
drivers were uninjured while
passenger Anya Amos was
taken to Mercy Hospital of
Springfield by the Barry
Lawrence ambulance. Both
cars involved received little
damage.

A few crashes were
reported in Barry County
this past week according
to Missouri State Highway
Patrol.
On March 26th at 5:20
p.m., a minor injury crash
was reported by Sergeant
Gary Horton. Jamie Britton,
age 21, from Aurora, ran off
the roadway and struck a
sign and culvert. She wasn’t
wearing a safety device and
sustained minor injuries.
Britton was taken to Mercy
Hospital in Cassville by
ambulance. Her 1996 Pontiac
Grand AM was totaled.

earlier in the week on March
23rd. According to Missouri

excel in math and science competition

He told them to enjoy climbing in the boats, sitting, and
asking questions. “We sell
four lines of boats: Cobalt,
Bennington, Skeeter, and
Lowe. We can service and
supply parts for most boats.
I have a great staff that is
young, motivated and eager
to sell and serve the customer. Josh Munday is our
sales manager. Most will
remember Josh from his job
as a manager at the local
Country Fresh Market. He
has always favored boating
and has gone from “bread
to boats” with no problem.
Our service manager is Jonathan Gray, another local guy
with a background in boat
service. He is a well-known
volunteer in the Shell Knob
community and is planning
this year’s Easter Egg Hunt
at the CCC/Park. Our roots
are deep in the Shell Knob
Community.”
Ken’s wife is Sherry
McCann and he has a son,
Cole, that is a Senior at Cassville High School. As a door

CMS students compete
in photography contest
The Cassville Middle
School students competed
in a photography contest in
March. Students submitted
photos in the following categories: portraiture, nature
and action.
The participants had
the opportunity to submit a
photo in each category. Photos could be black and white
or color, but could not be
manipulated in a photo editing software such as Photoshop.
The winners were: Cole

photography with a picture
of an icy day; Mary Hennigan, 1st place portraiture;

Students will be recognized
at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in
Columbia on Sunday, April
28th, 2013. Missouri Scholars 100 is a program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School
Principals. Schools across
Missouri were invited to
nominate candidates for this
state wide recognition. The
selection is based primarily
on a formula using the student’s grade point average

Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 55
of Shell Knob "rang in the
spring" by cleaning .7 of
a mile of Hwy. 39 in Barry
County. On March 25, members braced themselves for
the cooler temperatures and
worked up a "sweat" filling
50 bags with assorted trash.
The Hwy. 39 portion they are
responsible for is the southern entrance into Shell Knob
and beautiful Table Rock
Lake. It was tough on their
backs and legs----but the
payoff was a cleaner highway leading into the community and a feeling of satisfaction with being active
members of their community.

Auxiliary, America’s Volunteer Guardians, supports the

Snow, rain, then Easter Eggs

While it was snowing, Friends of the Library
group stuffed plastic eggs with small candies.
While it was raining, the group met again, to
stuff those multi-colored eggs.
March 23rd, Saturday, AFUMC (All Faith
United Methodist Church in Eagle Rock) youth
group, along with Jr. Fire Dept. volunteers, hid
2500 eggs for the children.
Children and parents began to gather in the
E.R.C.A. (Eagle Rock Community Center) barn,
next to the library. The Easter Bunny was sitting on the couch, ready to have his picture taken
with the kids. The annual Easter Egg Hunt began
around 11 a.m. Afterward, the ones who found the
golden eggs won Easter baskets.
The refreshment tables had cookies and juice drinks for all. A joint community and church gathering – parents talked…
children played… inside the warm, newly renovated barn.

Purdy R-II School District will be holding their Preschool screening on Tuesday, April 9 and Monday, April 15 during the hours

Frequently asked tax questions
Are there any benefits to filing early? And what
happens if I file after the deadline?
The main benefit of filing before April is getting your
tax refund back sooner. But filing really close to the deadline could also cost you money. “If you’re working with a
CPA and you dump your tax stuff on them two weeks before
April 15th,” Vient says, “most people will charge you a premium.” And doing your taxes earlier will mean that if you
hit a snag like a missing form or needing to resolve a big
question, you have more time to solve it.
As for filing late, you can easily ask for an automatic
extension if you think you won’t be able to file on time.
But if you were just being absent-minded, didn’t ask for
an extension and filed after the April 15th deadline, you’ll
owe the I.R.S. fines and interest, which can be a big chunk
of cash.
What’s the difference between an exemption, credit
and deduction?
Exemptions and deductions work the same way. They
reduce your taxable income, which lowers your tax bill.
For (a grossly simplified) example, if you take a $1,000 deduction, and you’re in the 20% tax bracket, you could save
$200 on your taxes. Or if you get a $3,800 exemption, that’s
about $760 less in taxes.
The difference between exemptions and deductions lies
in what you get and take them for. You can take deductions
for a variety of stuff: student loan interest, charitable deductions, tax-preparation fees … the list goes on and on. But
exemptions are what you get for people in your family. You
get one for being you, one for a spouse, one for each child
and one for any other dependents.
Credits work differently. They’re a straight-up discount on your tax bill. So if you get a $1,000 credit, you pay
$1,000 less in taxes. You get credits for things like having
a low income, buying a plug-in electric car and other stuff.

County Will Host Bass Tournament
Sheriff Mick Epperly
would like to announce that
the 1st annual DARE Buddy
Bass Benefit Tournament
will be held on April 6, 2013,
at the Cape Fair Marina. The
Bass Tournament will benefit the Barry County DARE
program. The Cape Fair
Marina will host and provide Take Off and WeightIn instructions. Entry fee
will be $40.00 per team or
boat. To obtain an application
and Tournament Rules, you
can pick up an entry sheet at
the Barry County Sheriff’s
Office, Cape Fair Marina or
print one off the Barry County
Sheriff’s Office website under
the community outreach tab.
We hope this tournament will
provide good fun for everyone as well as earn funds to
support our Barry County
DARE program, says Sheriff
Epperly.
Cassville Men’s League
The annual Cassville Men’s
League kick off meeting
was held Tuesday, 3/26/13,
at 10:00 a.m. Dan Gipple
opened the meeting with a
re-cap of items discussed and
voted on at last year's meeting. League will still be held
on Tuesdays. One dollar will
be paid each week to support
golf course projects. Each
project will be voted on by
the men’s league. All league
scores will be input to the
GHIN system as tournament
play.
Dan then announced that
Bob York and a committee of
members would take over the
administration of the men’s
league. It was then voted on
by the group that Bob York,
Jacques Fleischmann, Paul
Ramonette, Jim Murphy,
Terry Figgins, and Hal Every
would run the men’s league
as a committee.
Bob York then opened the
discussion about handicaps
while playing from different
tee boxes. After everyone’s
input it was voted to go with
a 2-2-2 plan in order to try to
equal the playing field. The
white tee box will receive 2
strokes from the yellow and
the blue will receive 2 strokes
from the white. This adjustment will be for league play
only and the committee will
make the adjustment when
they input your score. It is
imperative that you mark the
score card with the tee box
you are playing.
Holiday Island Play will be
chaired by Jack Shoup.
There will be some black
out days for league play;
unfortunately, two are in
April. On 4-9-13, they will be
working on the course. You
will be able to play 9 holes
that day, but they will not be
considered league play. April
30th is scheduled as a make up
day for the HS tournament if
needed, so that will be a nonleague day. July 23rd will be
the Tri State tournament and a
non scheduled league day.

Southwest High School has
started up FCA, Fellowship
of Christian Athletes. The
club’s mission is reaching
out to coaches and athletes,
and all whom they encounter to accept the challenge
and adventure of receiving
Jesus Christ as Savior and
Lord, and to show Him in
daily activities during school.
Southwest High School started FCA this year all thanks to
a few students and a Communications Art teacher named
Linda Morgan. Morgan had
always wanted an FCA chapter at Southwest since she
went to school there. When
she got the job teaching there,
it seemed like a good time
to start one. A few students
at Southwest were willing to
lead FCA, so they got started
the second week of school
Southwest Sponsors Future
Spikers Youth Volleyball Camp
The Southwest Lady Trojans will sponsor a youth volleyball camp April 16-18 at
the high school. The event
is open to boys and girls in
kindergarten through sixth
grade. The cost is $20 and
all campers receive a T-shirt,
certiifcate a free admission
to a future high school game.

helping out around the community. They sang Christmas
carols at the local nursing
homes in December and hosted a dinner/show to honor
our local volunteer firefighters, EMT’s, Rescue Workers
and their families on March
8th. These events give FCA
members a chance to learn
more about God, themselves
and leading others. They get
the opportunity to fellowship
with other Christian teenagers
from different areas and can
worship God without feeling
pressure to hold in their emotions. The Southwest FCA
chapter hopes to continue
growing over the years and
help create a positive haven
for teenagers.

In the closing days
of December 1912, the
county
court
reversed
itself in some measure by
appointing J.H. Ottarman
of Monett as superintendent
for the erection of the
courthouse. His duties were
to prepare and submit to
the county court plans and
specifications of the building
as well as to superintend the
erection of the building. For
several weeks, there was
a feeling coming from the
people of Cassville and the
county over that the plans
and specifications did not
call for a fireproof, up to
date, substantial building.
After an investigation was
made on the part of some
of the citizens of Cassville,
a temporary injunction
was prepared to enjoin the
county court from further
proceedings in the matter but
apparently was never filed.

action, rescinded that action
in contracting with the C.E.
Hair & Co. for plans and
specifications. Contractors
who had examined the plans
and specifications seemed
to differ on the kind of
building that the plans and
specifications called for.
Some of the contractors
said that the plans were
incomplete, indefinite and
do not call for a fireproof,
substantial building. Others
state that the plans and
specifications are complete,
definite and would erect a
substantial and fireproof
courthouse.
That opinion coincides
with Mr. Ottarmans position
that the plans are sufficient.
Disagreements
continued up into the
spring of 1913 when the
court appointed a new
superintendent who selected
another architect Henry
H. Hohenschild. Hambly
& Hansen of St. Louis
contracted to build the
reinforced concrete stone
veneer structure for $45,720.
The completed plans
for the courthouse, and
those plans were carried to
completion later in 1913
and early 1914, called for
the exterior of the building
to be faced in Barry County
stone and is designated in the
modern classic and will be
of a dignified monumental
type.
The absence of a costly
dome and steep slated roof
features no longer used on
modern public buildings
commended itself to the
judgment of every tax payer
and is in evidence that the
repairs on the building will
be reduced to a minimum.
The exterior walls will be
concrete faced with stone,
the floors and roof are of
reinforced concrete and the
interior division partitions
between the rooms are of
tile thus making the building
absolutely fireproof and
reflected credit on the
judgment of the county
court and superintendent in
adopting a building of the
type you see today, both in
construction and design.
The detailed matters
continued to be discussed by
the county court throughout
the summer of 1913 and
finally the cornerstone was
laid in August 1913 when
construction got underway
in a meaningful effort.
