An introduction to Wyre -
a land of magnificent sunrises and inspiring sunsets
It’s no secret that the best way to enjoy a destination is to get the inside track from the people who live there.
In our hunt for the very best of Wyre, we have combined our existing knowledge with that of our local community
and businesses.
All this adds up to a wonderful experience, whether you want to spend time on our breathtaking and recently
refurbished coastal resorts or our beautiful countryside walks.
Use this handy guide in conjunction with our website discoverwyre.co.uk for further information about
destinations to explore and return to.
Did You Know?
The towns and villages of Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Thornton,
Poulton-le-Fylde, Knott End on Sea and Garstang form the
district of Wyre - named after its 48 mile stretch of river.
We are less than half an hour away from the M6 and just
a stone’s throw away from Blackpool. Accessibility is easy,
whether you choose to travel on the M55, or leisurely cruise
by car or narrowboat through beautiful Wyre.
Trains to Poulton-Le-Fylde and good bus routes throughout
the area give great access to all our treasures too.

On our doorstep
Although there’s plenty to keep you entertained
locally, the luck of geography means Wyre is also
a great base for exploring further afield.
We’re just an hour’s drive, for example, from the
stunning beauty of the Lake District or the big city
buzz of Liverpool, Preston and Manchester.
Within Lancashire itself you’ll find all manner of towns
and villages steeped in centuries old heritage and
folklore, mixed with world class attractions and events.
And as featured on page 16 we’re bordered by 300
square miles of breathtaking countryside in the Forest
of Bowland (AONB).
And did you know that we share a coastline with the
much-loved seaside resort of Blackpool?
The last few years have seen a multi-million pound
regeneration and visitors are encouraged to take a fresh
look at Blackpool, famous for its tower and promenade,
seven miles of award-winning, golden beaches, the
magic of the Illuminations and a warm and friendly
welcome.
Alongside are family favourite attractions including the
iconic Blackpool Tower and trams (direct from Wyre),
Sandcastle indoor waterpark, Blackpool Zoo and the
Pleasure Beach – there’s truly something for everyone,
come rain or shine, at the nation’s most popular beach
resort.
A little further down the coastline sits Fylde, the
beautiful seaside towns of Lytham and St Anne’s
surrounded by picture postcard villages and famous for
its four championship golf courses.
Enjoy browsing exquisite boutiques, linger in quaint tea
rooms and cafés or stroll through rolling sand dunes.
And music lovers should make space in their diaries
for the August Lytham Proms pop weekend - see
lythamfestival.com for what’s happening in 2016.

Getting here
By Train – Poulton railway station is on the main Blackpool North line. Buses can be caught from here all over the
borough if you’re staying further afield.
By Road – rural Wyre is on and around the A6, accessed from Jct 32 or Jct 33 of the M6. Coastal areas are via
Jct 3 of the M55. We have an abundance of car parks, many of which are free. wyre.gov.uk/parking
Getting Around
By Bus – Frequent and late-night services connect the towns of Poulton, Cleveleys, Thornton and Fleetwood with
Blackpool (blackpooltransport.com). Try traveline-northwest.co.uk to plan a route. Timetables and cost effective
tickets for three and seven day travel are available from our visitor information centres.
By Tram – a modern light rail system is the quickest and easiest way to travel along the coast.
By Ferry – it takes minutes to sail across the Wyre estuary from Fleetwood to the picturesque village of Knott
End. Cycles and dogs are welcome. See wyre.gov.uk/ferry for sailing times.
By Bike – there are a network of cycle paths.
Check out discoverwyre.co.uk/things-to-do/cycling-routes-in-wyre for ideas and maps.
On Foot – similarly we are blessed with so many different walks where you can discover history, heritage and
breathtaking views. Less mobile people can hire an all-terrain Tramper vehicle free of charge.
