Vision, Mission and Our Values
By David Keith, FACHE
President and CEO
Almost 40 years ago, McAlester Regional Health Center opened its doors as a new, comprehensive, and advanced
healthcare system serving all of Southeastern Oklahoma.
Since the beginning, MRHC has strived to serve our communities by making available state-of the-art technologies and
facilities, and providing personalized care with excellence and compassion. In consonance with our Mission of “Improving
the Lives of Southeastern Oklahomans” and our Vision of “Becoming the Regional Health Center of Excellence for
Southeastern Oklahoma,” our commitment to friends and family in Pittsburg, Latimer, Pushmataha, Atoka, Coal,
Hughes, McIntosh and Haskell counties remains steadfast and sincere.
To embrace our important role throughout Southeastern Oklahoma, and to rekindle the spirit of our heritage, the
employees and staff at MRHC have embraced our Culture, “MRHC ,” emphasizing the importance of the three “C”s of
Customer service, Continual improvement, and Consistency. Everything we do and say is to the benefit of our
patients and is done with these three attributes in mind.
As we look to the future and in anticipation of another 40 years of service, we pledge to continue our tradition of providing
great quality care by highly qualified, caring and capable individuals. To ensure we keep our promise, our Values are
internalized to guide and direct us. They are:
Professionalism:
Putting our customers first, taking pride in our appearance, and sharing our knowledge to the benefit of the team.
Integrity:
Consistently modeling ethical behavior through transparency, honesty, trust, and respect, while maintaining a
positive attitude.
Accountability:
The willingness to accept responsibility for one’s actions and follow the policies of the organization.
Excellence:
Using our talent for quality that surpasses ordinary standards with a focus on diligence and commitment.

“The McAlester Regional Health Center plays a vital role in the health and well-being of not only McAlester, but our entire
region. Financially speaking, our city-owned hospital is by far our largest asset. But dollars and cents don’t begin to tell the story.
How can one put a price tag on the ability to receive quality healthcare locally?
All of us see the difficulties being faced by rural hospitals across this nation. In this challenging
environment, it gratifies me to see that McAlester Regional Health Center is taking the steps it needs in order
to thrive and achieve its vision to be the regional health center of excellence for southeastern Oklahoma. My
congratulations to all the dedicated individuals at McAlester Regional Health Center who are making a
positive difference for our community – one patient and one day at a time.”
Thank you for all you do.
– Mayor Steve Harrison
MRHC History
All Saints’ – 1900
St. Mary’s – 1900
McAlester General Hospital – 1964
McAlester Regional Health Center is
central to the rich history of McAlester and
the communities of Southeast Oklahoma,
established after the city’s two hospitals
merged in 1972. The City of McAlester
established a Trust and ground was broken
for the new MRHC in 1976. We opened two
years later.
Our medical history begins before
statehood when an Episcopal Bishop
arrived to help men and boys injured in a
disastrous mining accident in Krebs in 1892.
Father Francis Brooks opened All
Saints’ Hospital in South McAlester (on what
is now West Carl Albert Parkway) in 1895.
All Saints’ added a nurse training
school and operated until 1928, by which
time it had been turned over to the Scottish
Rite bodies. The Masons operated the
hospital out of several facilities as Albert
Pike Hospital until 1950. It was later known
as McAlester General West.
Meanwhile, McAlester’s Dr. E. H. Troy
opened Mercy Hospital in 1902 at Third and
Washington streets. Mercy was later taken
over by the Catholic Order Sisters of
Charity. In 1914, Dr. Troy’s Mercy Hospital
was renamed St. Mary’s Hospital and was
moved to a new location. At one point St.
Mary’s operated at what is now The Oaks
Rehabilitation Center at Creek and Seventh
streets.
The McAlester Hospital Foundation was
established and, in 1972, St. Mary's closed
and merged with McAlester General as
McAlester General East.
Groundbreaking for a new hospital was
held in 1976, and MRHC opened its doors
to the public two years later, replacing
McAlester General. Since that time, MRHC
has operated as a Trust of the City of
McAlester, with oversight by a Board of
Trustees appointed by the City Council.
Today, MRHC operates without any city
funding or tax revenue. The Hospital Board
meets each month to make decisions about
Hospital operations that are in the best
interest of both McAlester Regional Health
Center and the City of McAlester.

In May,
my grandmother,
Wanda Moore,
went to work and then all of a
sudden, her face started to feel
funny and she couldn’t
remember who she was or who
anyone was around her.
She didn’t even know where she was. She was
scared and confused.
My grandfather, Michael Moore Sr., rushed her to
our emergency room. He was just as scared as she
was. My grandfather remembers that once they
presented it was a whirlwind of excellent care. He was
so impressed with the care, he stepped out of the way
so they could do their thing. They can’t remember
anyone’s names. They only remember the excellent
care that our health facility and Stroke Team gave.
Because of that care and the urgency that the team
worked with, my grandmother has no permanent brain
damage. She is able to continue with her daily life
activities. She is able to lead the music at church with
no difficulty. She is able to return to work. She is able to
teach kids at church. She is able to spend more time
with her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Because of our ER, she was able
to be there the day I gave birth to my son. Our family is
truly thankful for the care that our staff provided, from
the ER Admitting staff to the ER physicians & all the
Stroke Team.
Thank you for being there for us.
Thank you for the days we have with our Nana.

Memorial Wig Closet
The Teresa Lane Compton Memorial Wig Closet, on the
Third Floor of MRHC, is operated by Ashley and Lexie
Lerblance as a place to help women who have lost their
hair to chemotherapy. Lexie, 17, started the project for 4-H
after witnessing the struggle and recovery of Mom Ashley, a
pharmacist for MRHC.
The room (named for Ashley’s late mother, Teresa) is a
private, tastefully decorated and comfortable space where
women meet 1-on-1 with someone who has experienced
hair loss. They talk about hair color and length, learn how
to care for a wig, use a wig cap, or stylishly wrap a scarf.
The room, donated by the MRHC Foundation, is stocked
floor to ceiling with wigs, turbans, hats, scarves and even
prostheses, nearly all of it purchased with donations and
gifts.
To make a donation or to visit the Wig Closet, contact
Ashley at 918-429-2131.

Referring to the Wound Care Center after six months of treatment: “They did the best job. I never saw anything like it,” Lance told us.
Lance said he was burning leaves at his home at Arrowhead Estates when he tripped and fell on a log that had begun burning. His
brother took him to the hospital emergency room at McAlester Regional Health Center. “I was burned pretty bad,” Lance recalls. “From
above my knee to my calf.” The hospital Emergency staff cleaned the wound and administered a pain solution. Six months later, the
wound remained unhealed. “It was too deep,” said Lance, who also is a diabetic. He came into McAlester Regional Wound Healing
Center where the Team worked to treat his wound, prescribed daily topical medications, and saw him weekly for outpatient treatment. “It’s
one of the best organizations I’ve ever seen,” Lance said of the center. “They probably saved his leg,” added his wife, Charlene.

“Deanna Sebastian was a wound care patient who used the McAlester Regional Wound Healing Center’s hyperbaric treatment after
a skin graft. “The hyperbaric treatment I received provided the best possible foundation for the success of my skin graft,” she said. The
wound care center has two hyperbaric chambers, which use high pressure and an all-oxygen environment to treat specific types of
wounds. The process promotes healing by increasing oxygen at the body’s tissue level up to 20 times its normal level. “I am not sure
that my healing would be progressing as well as it is without the help of the hyperbaric chamber,” Deanna said of her experience. “I
highly recommend it to anyone for wound healing.” Deanna said her treatment at the Wound Healing Center was always positive, from
the beginning to the end, thanks to the compassion, knowledge and professionalism of each staff member.”

“The qualities of the facilities, the staff and the outstanding nursing at MRHC truly make it an
exceptional regional medical center. The transformation and growth in the past few years of the
McAlester Regional Health Center in terms of the depth of the programs available and quality of health
care is second to none in the area. Procedures and processes which used to require trips to facilities
located a long ways away are now capable of being handled locally, helping to ease the stress of
recovery for both the patient and their families. While there have been amazing improvements in the
past few years, I believe the future is even brighter for the McAlester Regional Health Center.”

“I would like to commend the staff of the McAlester Regional Health Center outpatient Ambulatory Surgery Center and
Dr. Justin. I recently went to the McAlester Regional Health Center ER from the request from my primary care physician, Dr.
K. Miller. I was checked out very well by the staff in the ER. I was admitted to 3 West unit and wanted to let you know that
you have an awesome staff working that section. I can’t remember all their names, but I was treated like a patient from
people that loved and cared. McAlester Regional Health Center, you have some good people working those halls and all
throughout that place. Thank you very much for taking care of me. HOO RAH, for all of ya...”

MERCY CLINIC MERGES WITH McALESTER
REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER
As the founder of the free Medical Clinic in
McAlester, Oklahoma stepped down, McAlester
Regional Health Center stepped forward to ensure the
area’s most vulnerable residents continued to have
access to basic health care.
Dr. Larry Lewis founded the Mercy Health Clinic of McAlester
23 years ago, offering free services with help from volunteers,
donations and organizations such as McAlester Regional Health
Center. A transition team from the hospital and Mercy Clinic worked
together to make the move as easy as possible for Mercy Clinic
clients. There was no name change and there were only a few
changes in how clients scheduled appointments to obtain services.

PAIN WITH RUNNING?
A personalized exercise program can correct biochemical imbalances that can lead to pain free activities.
PAIN WITHOUT RUNNING?
At least 60-75% of runners are sidelined by an injury at some point in time.
Training errors are the most common underlying factors in most running related injuries.
WE PROVIDE . . . Video Running Analysis, Full Body Biochemical Assessment, Rehab & Conditioning Specific to Running.
WE HELP YOU . . . Increase your mobility, strength, balance & agility to minimize your chance of injury or re-injury.
WE CAN IMPROVE YOUR FORM . . . to become more efficient.
At our first meeting:
At our second meeting:
• We take a detailed history of the individual's running habits and
any pain they may have.
• We do a full body flexibility and strength screening and inspect
footwear. In addition, we evaluate motion at the feet as well as
standing posture.
• We video the client running on treadmill from side and back, both
full body and from hips down, as well as walking on the treadmill
with and without shoes.
• Based on findings we create an individualized exercise program
to address any pathology or inefficiency in the runner's form.
OCTOBER 2016
SUNDAY
• We review the video and all findings with the runner.
• We teach the exercise program and provide pictures of each.
• We apply leukotape or kinesiotape as appropriate and make
shoe recommendations as appropriate.
• We are available to answer questions afterward. We will
re-evaluate as desired to compare form to previous video
and update program.

“I would like to commend the staff of the McAlester Regional Health Center outpatient Ambulatory Surgery Center and Dr. Justin Plaxico for my recent gallbladder
surgery. Let me begin by saying the pre-op appointment helped put my mind at ease. Valerie Mullins, RN explained all that I needed to do to prepare myself for the
surgery and what to expect that day. She also went over all my history and made sure the information was correct in my files. The day I arrived the staff took the best of
care. making sure myself and my family were informed and comfortable with my situation. All of the Nurses, including Stephanie Self, Christina Modzelewski and Karen
Shackelford, made sure I was not in pain and knew how to take care of myself when I left. Phil Vilar, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, took great care of me also,
letting me know how it would all go and what to expect. Thank you for allowing me to share this experience, as I am a local business owner and all too often the
"GOOD JOB" is overlooked!”

Southeast Clinic Orthopedics’ office help is AMAZING, especially

Our family’s association with McAlester Regional spans a period of more than 30 years. In that
time, we have utilized the hospital for surgery, emergency care, and for the births of our two sons. The
most recent visits were to the hospital's wound care clinic.
In all of our visits to McAlester Regional Health Center there has been one quality that impressed
us the most. It is not the physical building, but the caring nature of the staff. We have always felt like
the employees were truly concerned with our well-being. We knew the staff had a genuine interest in
our care and this caring attitude was an essential part of our recovery.
