Since the beginning, MRHC has strived to serve our communities by making available state-of the-art technologies and facilities, and providing personalized care with excellence and compassion. In consonance with our Mission of “Improving the Lives of Southeastern Oklahomans” and our Vision of “Becoming the Regional Health Center of Excellence for Southeastern Oklahoma,” our commitment to friends and family in Pittsburg, Latimer, Pushmataha, Atoka, Coal, Hughes, McIntosh and Haskell counties remains steadfast and sincere. Financially speaking, our city-owned hospital is by far our largest asset. But dollars and cents don’t begin to tell the story. How can one put a price tag on the ability to receive quality healthcare locally? All of us see the difficulties being faced by rural hospitals across this nation. In this challenging environment, it gratifies me to see that McAlester Regional Health Center is taking the steps it needs in order to thrive and achieve its vision to be the regional health center of excellence for southeastern Oklahoma. My congratulations to all the dedicated individuals at McAlester Regional Health Center who are making a positive difference for our community – one patient and one day at a time.” Thank you for all you do. – Mayor Steve Harrison MRHC History All Saints’ – 1900 St. Mary’s – 1900 McAlester General Hospital – 1964 McAlester Regional Health Center is central to the rich history of McAlester and the communities of Southeast Oklahoma, established after the city’s two hospitals merged in 1972. The City of McAlester established a Trust and ground was broken for the new MRHC in 1976. We opened two years later. Our medical history begins before statehood when an Episcopal Bishop arrived to help men and boys injured in a disastrous mining accident in Krebs in 1892. Father Francis Brooks opened All Saints’ Hospital in South McAlester (on what is now West Carl Albert Parkway) in 1895. All Saints’ added a nurse training school and operated until 1928, by which time it had been turned over to the Scottish Rite bodies. The Masons operated the hospital out of several facilities as Albert Pike Hospital until 1950. It was later known as McAlester General West. Meanwhile, McAlester’s Dr. E. H. Troy opened Mercy Hospital in 1902 at Third and Washington streets. Mercy was later taken over by the Catholic Order Sisters of Charity. In 1914, Dr. Troy’s Mercy Hospital was renamed St. Mary’s Hospital and was moved to a new location. At one point St. Mary’s operated at what is now The Oaks Rehabilitation Center at Creek and Seventh streets. The McAlester Hospital Foundation was established and, in 1972, St. Mary's closed and merged with McAlester General as McAlester General East. Groundbreaking for a new hospital was held in 1976, and MRHC opened its doors to the public two years later, replacing McAlester General. Since that time, MRHC has operated as a Trust of the City of McAlester, with oversight by a Board of Trustees appointed by the City Council. Today, MRHC operates without any city funding or tax revenue. She didn’t even know where she was. She was scared and confused. My grandfather, Michael Moore Sr., rushed her to our emergency room. He was just as scared as she was. My grandfather remembers that once they presented it was a whirlwind of excellent care. He was so impressed with the care, he stepped out of the way so they could do their thing. They can’t remember anyone’s names. They only remember the excellent care that our health facility and Stroke Team gave. Because of that care and the urgency that the team worked with, my grandmother has no permanent brain damage. She is able to continue with her daily life activities. She is able to lead the music at church with no difficulty. She is able to return to work. She is able to teach kids at church. She is able to spend more time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Because of our ER, she was able to be there the day I gave birth to my son. Our family is truly thankful for the care that our staff provided, from the ER Admitting staff to the ER physicians & all the Stroke Team. Thank you for being there for us. Thank you for the days we have with our Nana. — Lucy Muller Breast Cancer A W A R E N E S S M O N T H Teresa Lane Compton Memorial Wig Closet The Teresa Lane Compton Memorial Wig Closet, on the Third Floor of MRHC, is operated by Ashley and Lexie Lerblance as a place to help women who have lost their hair to chemotherapy. Lexie, 17, started the project for 4-H after witnessing the struggle and recovery of Mom Ashley, a pharmacist for MRHC. The room (named for Ashley’s late mother, Teresa) is a private, tastefully decorated and comfortable space where women meet 1-on-1 with someone who has experienced hair loss. They talk about hair color and length, learn how to care for a wig, use a wig cap, or stylishly wrap a scarf. The room, donated by the MRHC Foundation, is stocked floor to ceiling with wigs, turbans, hats, scarves and even prostheses, nearly all of it purchased with donations and gifts. I never saw anything like it,” Lance told us. Lance said he was burning leaves at his home at Arrowhead Estates when he tripped and fell on a log that had begun burning. His brother took him to the hospital emergency room at McAlester Regional Health Center. “I was burned pretty bad,” Lance recalls. “From above my knee to my calf.” The hospital Emergency staff cleaned the wound and administered a pain solution. Six months later, the wound remained unhealed. “It was too deep,” said Lance, who also is a diabetic. He came into McAlester Regional Wound Healing Center where the Team worked to treat his wound, prescribed daily topical medications, and saw him weekly for outpatient treatment. “It’s one of the best organizations I’ve ever seen,” Lance said of the center. “They probably saved his leg,” added his wife, Charlene. — Lance C. Dr. Laura Jennings Dr. Andrew Ryals Dr. Dami Akingbola The MRHC Family Medicine Residency Program began in 2012 in partnership with the Osteopathic Medical Education Consortium of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Victoria Keeton, D.O., had served her 3-year residency in Family Medicine at MRHC and made history as the program's rst graduate. Completing their residencies in 2016 will be MRHC Family Medicine Drs. Laura Jennings, Stephanie Patyk and Andrew Ryals. Second-year residents of the program are Drs. Clay Bowen, Jennifer Kim and William Kinderknecht. Joining MRHC for their rst year of residency are Doctors of Osteopathy Goldameir Dami Akingbola, Chelsea Berges and Natalyia Polito. A doctor tests for national certication as a specialist following a medical residency period in their chosen eld. Each doctor in the MRHC program has chosen Family Medicine as a specialty and is a medical school graduate licensed to practice medicine. The wound care center has two hyperbaric chambers, which use high pressure and an all-oxygen environment to treat specific types of wounds. New Patient Portal The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics has awarded MRHC with Stage 6 Designation for its utilization of Electronic Medical Records (EMR). This reflects our commitment to the highest levels of patient safety and quality care. Reaching Stage 6 out of 7 is a result of focus, good direction and a steadfast commitment from leadership. Dr. Larry Lewis founded the Mercy Health Clinic of McAlester 23 years ago, offering free services with help from volunteers, donations and organizations such as McAlester Regional Health Center. A transition team from the hospital and Mercy Clinic worked together to make the move as easy as possible for Mercy Clinic clients. There was no name change and there were only a few changes in how clients scheduled appointments to obtain services. Let me begin by saying the pre-op appointment helped put my mind at ease. Valerie Mullins, RN explained all that I needed to do to prepare myself for the surgery and what to expect that day. She also went over all my history and made sure the information was correct in my files. The day I arrived the staff took the best of care. making sure myself and my family were informed and comfortable with my situation. All of the Nurses, including Stephanie Self, Christina Modzelewski and Karen Shackelford, made sure I was not in pain and knew how to take care of myself when I left. Phil Vilar, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, took great care of me also, letting me know how it would all go and what to expect. In all of our visits to McAlester Regional Health Center there has been one quality that impressed us the most. It is not the physical building, but the caring nature of the staff.
