Chamber Policy for Chamber After Hours
& Impact Breakfasts
As hard to believe as it seems, summer is already over, and what a great summer it was! The Chamber took advantage
of several opportunities resulting in some very positive attention for our community.
Tulsa television station FOX23 approached the Chamber during the spring and to let us know we were being
considered for their “On the Road” segment of the newscast, which focuses on four communities each year. We
quickly organized a Task Force to address the opportunity that included me, Mayor Kevin Priddle, David Lerblance, Karl
Scifres, Debbie Watkins, Cory Richards, and the Chamber Staff. We formulated a plan and met with the producers at a
local Italian Restaurant and pitched our idea. The producers loved it so much they gave us our choice of broadcast
dates.
Since both the McAlester Main Street’s Crazy Days sales event and the Prison Rodeo were coming in August, the Task
Force chose the last week of July for our broadcast week so the broadcasted publicity would boost the success of the
other events. The task force created the idea of a local Talent Show at Chaddick Park as the backdrop event final
FOX23 newscast, which was live, on-location in McAlester. This event also dovetailed in with the kick-off of the
McAlester Main Street’s Crazy Daze downtown sales event (which is why we named the event “Crazy Days ~N~
Starry Nights”).
The result was outstanding. “On the Road” filmed some very unique and interesting stories about McAlester that were highlighted during the week. In
addition, the Crazy Days ~N~ Starry Nights event produced some great talent and provided an awesome event for the FOX23 live newscast at Chaddick Park,
where hundreds of people gathered, watched, and listened. FOX23 was so impressed with McAlester’s support and friendliness; they have already been back
to focus more positive attention on our community. In addition, the newscasts and Chaddick Park event were great ways to kickoff the publicity for the Prison
Rodeo.

NEW ADDRESS 1/6/06
Thanks to all those on the task force who gave their time, efforts, and creative energy into
planning and participating in the event. Thanks also to Sean DeNike and the McAlester High
School Steel Band; and to the Elvis Impersonator, Terry Price for their contributions to the
event. In addition, thanks to the Chamber Staff – Annette,Tanaye, and Karen for the
incredible amount of work and planning – without your dedication, none of this would have
been possible.
A special thanks to Connie J. Davis,Warden Randy Workman, and the entire Rodeo Committee
for the outstanding job they did in coordinating this year’s Rodeo. We not only had the highest
ticket and program sales in Rodeo history, we also received great publicity from Pulitzer Prize
winning photo-journalist Sol Neelman (who covered the event for his extreme sports blog) and
international attention from Animo Studios, an Irish documentary film crew who flew over and
filmed a documentary about the Rodeo (to be broadcast in Ireland)! Plans are already
underway for next year.

The ABC’s of Chamber Buck$
A – AVAILABILITY: Chamber Buck$ area available in increments of $10
$20 and $50.
B – BLANK:The “Pay To” line is purposely left blank and is to be left
blank until those recipients of the Chamber Bucks wish to spend them at
a business. At that time they fill in the business or store name.
C – CASH FOR CHANGE:There is an even exchange of monies – the
Chamber adds no service charge to the process. And since it’s an even
exchange, you must give change to the customer in cash. Example: A
customer buys a $45 item with a $50 Chamber Buck – you will give them
$5 cash for change. There is only a $10 cash back limit.
D – DEPOSIT DIRECTLY:The Chamber Bucks are actual checks: bar
coded, numbered and containing the Chamber logo. Businesses receiving
them can treat them as a regular check and deposit them directly into
their accounts, instead of having to come to the Chamber for
reimbursement.
E – EMPLOYEE: If you need info about ordering Chamber Bucks as incentives or bonuses for your employees, please call the Chamber office.

To qualify the region must

graduation rate of 82% or
have 82 % of the seniors graduating with a Career
Readiness Certificate. Three
percent of the existing
workforce must have a
Career Readiness Certificate
and 25% of the available
workforce must be certified.
A Career Readiness
Certificate is attained by
taking the WorkKeys test that
was developed by ACT.
WorkKeys tests required for
a CRC are Reading for
Information, Applied
Mathematics, and Locating
Information. Currently three
different levels of the CRC
can be achieved: Gold, Silver
or Bronze. Business and
Industry will benefit by
knowing that they have a
qualified pool of workforce
that is ready to go to work
with the right skills for the
job. Certified job profilers
are available to come to an
industry and profile a
position. This profile can then
be used to attract employees
that would have the skills
needed for the job.

The Chamber Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, October 23rd from 11:30 to 1:00 pm held at the
McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Lee Maxell Building #59. The Chamber Staff will be giving an
overview of what you can expect in 2010. Recently we spent an entire day evaluating how we
operate and the benefits offered to the membership. One of the major goals accomplished was
to objectively look for ways to improve and fine tune the current benefits offered and look for
new benefits to add.
We looked a variety of subjects including:
•
Organization
•
Communication
•
Planning the 2010 Program of Work and Board Retreat
•
Committees
•
Managing the membership – current and perspective
•
Managing information – emails, newsletter and website
•
Needs of the office (immediate, 6 months and 1 year needs), and finally
•
How to keep the membership aware of what’s going on and how to be involved!
The Board and staff is working on finalizing a Program of Work for 2010 and will be looking at a 5
year strategic plan for the Chamber that will be worked on during the Board Retreat in
