Key commitments annual report form
Angel Radio‟s Station Manager with Mary Parker and her radio.
Mary is diabetic and has had a stroke. She was found at home,
by neighbours, after laying unconscious for several days.
Following her release from hospital Mary refused to go to nursing
homes that could not receive Angel Radio. Mary is now in Acacia
House with Angel Radio loud and clear.
The Roberts radio is a gift from Angel Radio.

1.2
Key commitments: programming
The programme service will be comprised of live and pre-recorded programming
featuring nostalgic music, predominantly from the years 1900 - 1959, complimented
by informative speech on local issues.
* Live programming output will typically comprise 70% music and 30% speech.
* Music output will be tailored specifically to attract the older generation. It will be
comprised of music released between 1900 and 1959 and feature popular music
from that period including jazz, big band, rock 'n' roll, doo wop, musical, classical,
and opera.
* Speech output will include an events diary, community-focussed information,
documentaries, competitions and local weather forecasts. It will also feature a range
of relevant items such as information on health, diet, pensions and so on, as well as
reminiscence therapy.
* Live programming (which may include pre-recorded inserts, if applicable) will
typically comprise 10 hours a day.
AVERAGE LIVE HOURS / AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION / RECORDED HOURS
* The daily list below indicates the number of live hours each day and how many of
these live hours include audience participation. During this report period Angel Radio
has provided an additional 2 recording studios to assist older people to access the
airwaves at times convenient to them rather than at times convenient to the radio
station. The third list indicates the number of daily hours these specially recorded
new programmes are aired.
**Monthly totals can be seen at the bottom of the list.
Monday Live = 10.5 Hours (+ 1 hour on last year)
Monday Audience Participation = 9.5 Hours (+ 2 hours on last year)
Monday New Recorded Programmes = 5.5 Hours (+ 2 hours on last year)

Sunday New Recorded Programmes = 8.75 Hours (+ 2.25 hours on last year)
TOTAL LIVE HOURS PER MONTH = 1,500
TOTAL AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION HOURS PER MONTH = 1,297.5
TOTAL NEW RECORDED PROGRAMMES PER MONTH = 1,207.5 HOURS
TOTAL ORIGINAL OUTPUT PER MONTH = 2,707.5 HOURS
At the beginning of this report period the Angel Radio team set itself the goal of
increasing daily live hours, audience participation and the availability of facilities for
recording new programmes at times suitable to our users.
The weekly totals for all 3 categories were indeed increased during this report period.
Total live hours per week increased by 1.25 hours
Total hours per week offering audience participation increased by 5.25 hours
Total hours per week of new programmes, recorded as live, increased by 8.25 hours
We are particularly proud of our 8.25 hours increase in weekly recorded programmes
as (1) this is the type of facility which enables older people to access the airwaves at
a time suitable to their availability, and (2) recorded programmes in reality take
approximately 3 times longer to produce than their live counterpart as script
alterations, editing and transfer from minidisc (the recording medium) to mp3 file (the
edit and broadcast medium) all add to total production time.
This ability to offer more opportunities to record programmes is due to the equipping
of 2 new studios and the extra studio engineering and editing work undertaken by
Tony Smith – Doug‟s Morning Service / Community Noticeboard / Swingsong /
Jeannie‟s Story / Star Spotlight / Hound of the Baskervilles (8-part serial) / Christmas
Carol (12-part serial) /
Martin Miller – Music Cocktail / Granny‟s Attic / Angie‟s Half-hour / Bob‟s Gems from
the Vaults / Geoff Porter / Jazz Jamboree / Good Morning / Eileen‟s Profiles / On the
Light Side / Wag‟s Rag Bag / John‟s Tea Dance / Be My Guest / Where did it Begin /
Martin Kirby – Audrey‟s Memories / Novelty Nostalgia / Grand Voyages / Growing
Old Disgracefully
James Uren (work experience)
Robyn Codlin (work experience)
Haydn Rush (work experience)
SPEECH / MUSIC RATIO
SPEECH / MUSIC RATIO = 65% Music and 35% Speech
* During this period our speech output was again higher than the 30% written into
our Key Commitments. Some programmes have very high speech content, such as
Yesterday‟s News with its 91.6% speech, Wag‟s Rag Bag at 90% speech, and the
Radio Doctor‟s 93.5% speech. Several programmes have had to be devised
specifically to have a particularly high music content and low speech content to
redress the balance. These „balancing‟ programmes include Mock Concerts at just
4% speech and Music Box at 0% speech. However, by far, the majority of our
programmes continue to be close to 70% music with 30% speech.
3
* Our music output has again been tailored specifically to attract the older
generation. It has been comprised of music released between 1900 and 1959 and
has featured popular music from that period including a huge number of ballads,
jazz, big band, rock 'n' roll, instrumentals, musicals, classical, novelty songs and
opera.
* One genre which has suffered from lack of exposure this period on Angel Radio is
country music. We are working to put this right next period.
* A favourite of our listeners, evident from listener requests, is film and stage
musicals. This period Pete Pitman produced a popular series of programmes each
week featuring a complete musical performance, with Pete in the theatre‟s Director‟s
Box explaining the story to Angel listeners.
* During this period we have played several records out of our time period of 1900
to 1959. One record played is a bagpipe piece called Highland Cathedral. This was
played at a listener‟s funeral and simultaneously on Angel Radio as a memorial
tribute. Pompey Chimes by Portsmouth Royal Marine Band was played upon request
by several older football fans on days when Portsmouth Football Club were playing
in special matches. Several records by Rosemary Squires were played during a live
interview with the 82 year old performer.
* Speech output this period has included a daily events diary, information from other
community groups working for the betterment of older people, documentaries on a
wide variety of subjects ranging from falls prevention to the life of Norman Wisdom,
competitions and local weather forecasts. We have also featured a range of relevant
items such as information on winter fuel payments, winter heating tips, social events,
etc, as well as reminiscence therapy in many forms.
* Periods when the station has been off air have been less and for shorter time
spans during this report period. Our studio and link transmitter were without
electricity for three periods, each of about 24 hours, due to widespread power
outages during the winter. Our main FM transmitter was off air for 3-days following a
fire at the electricity sub-station which supplies the factory where our broadcast
equipment is sited. Out internet listeners are very keen on emailing or telephoning us
when our streams go down. They usually let us know within minutes of losing the
signal.

1.3
Key commitments: Social gain objectives (a) The provision of sound
broadcasting services to individuals who are otherwise underserved
Social gain objectives (a)
* The service is specifically focussed on the 60+ age group in Havant. They are not
currently served by other broadcasters in the area. The aim is to provide informative
programming on such topics as health matters, education and advice from local
support groups.
INDIVIDUALS IN THE BOROUGH OF HAVANT AND SURROUNDING AREA WHO
ARE OTHERWISE UNDERSERVED
* Angel Radio has dedicated the majority of its time and resources to the 60+ age
group in Havant.
SNOWBOUND PROGRAMMING - In addition to providing regular entertaining and
informative programming, Angel Radio provided a unique series of broadcasts during
the spell of bad weather in early January 2010 when heavy snow blanketed the area
for several days. All live programmes carried weather and travel information as well
as other vital health and welfare information. Lists of school closures were read out,
as were details of shops selling milk, bread, etc. Recorded programmes, where
necessary, were interrupted with news updates. The radio station spent a
considerable amount of money installing a very large screen adjustable monitor, a
new PC and internet connection in our main on air studio to provide presenters with
instant, uninterrupted access to information, and the station was manned 24 hours a
day during the period to take calls from listeners and to keep them informed.
It was noted during the worst of the period one radio station local to Angel Radio was
not airing weather and travel information, but inviting listeners to telephone them for
updates, while a second station local to Angel Radio appeared to be automated for a
lengthy period. Angel Radio also provided a free-phone line if listeners required indepth information additional to that supplied on air and it was very evident from
callers that local people of all ages, not just older people, were using Angel Radio as
their first point of contact. A total of 971 callers used the service.
Havant Borough Council, Portsmouth City Council, East Hants District Council and
West Sussex Council, as well as Stagecoach, First Bus, South West Trains and the
local police all kept in touch with regular information for airing.
The week following the bad weather there appeared several items in the local
newspaper praising Angel Radio‟s work, and we received many letters of thanks from
listeners. Interestingly we also received copies of replies to letters that listeners had
written to various information and service providers. The following was from the
Communications Manager of Portsmouth City Council, Charlotte Smith to an Angel
listener.
“Thank you very much for your letter, which was passed on to me by the Chief
Executive‟s office. We are aware of the valuable service provided by Angel Radio,
which I know is listened to and enjoyed by a great many people in Portsmouth. We
have been providing our press releases to Angel Radio for a number of years and, as
always, they did an excellent job communicating with people in the snow.”
. . . . and the following was to an Angel listener from Leader of Hampshire County
Council, Ken Thornber.
5
“Thank you for your recent letter and I was glad to learn that the information
disseminated by the County Council during the recent bad weather was of assistance
to you. You also mentioned the excellent services offered by Angel Radio. You may
be interested to know that I presented Angel Radio with a group Award in our Good
Neighbour Award Ceremony in April 2008. They received several nominations for the
service they run, and especially for how they provide essential information for older
people throughout the day.”
In addition to providing regular entertaining and informative programming, and the
special „snow‟ broadcasts, for the 60+ age group in Havant, we have provided people
in the 60+ age group living all over the UK, who are underserved by other
broadcasters, with an additional 2 nostalgic music-based Angel Radio stations, which
are not geographically area specific. These extra stations are created by cherrypicking suitable programmes from our main FM station. All 3 of our stations have
become very popular on the internet, with all 3 regularly appearing in the Shoutcast
top 10,000 worldwide internet broadcasters. This period saw our main Angel Radio‟s
internet streams receive over a million hits, with an average listening period of 2
hours 10 minutes.
We have, this period, cut back our offers of time and resources to help community
groups and existing broadcasters in other areas to provide radio services for older
people. From previous experience we have found many of the people who have
sought our advice or assistance have been time wasters or have not had the
dedication required to provide radio services for older people on a long term basis.
A fine example of the type of people who have wasted our time this period is Mark
Watkins and Stephen Ham, Hospital Radio staff who expressed an interest in running
an RSL as a possible prelude to starting a community radio station. They asked if
they could visit Angel Radio one Sunday and seek advice from the Manager. A date
was agreed. Mr Watkins and Mr Ham then cancelled the meeting shortly before the
due date and suggested another date. Shortly before this second date arrived the
pair again cancelled and suggested another date, which was agreed. On the due
date Angel Radio‟s Manager waited at the correct time for Mr Watkins and Mr Ham to
arrive. One hour later, when the visitors had not arrived, the Station Manager sent Mr
Watkins an email to ascertain what was happening. A return email from Mr Watkins
stated that he and his colleague had decided not to come on this occasion but could
he make another appointment. Mr Watkins was told in no uncertain terms whether he
could make another appointment. Unfortunately this type of thoughtless behaviour
has caused us to be less ready to offer help to others in future.
However, we have provided a community radio station for older people in Australia
with a prominent link button on the front page of our website, and have continued to
offer limited advice to a few UK enquirers. One very keen prospective community
broadcaster who we have assisted this period is Ted Fleischaker, who wishes to run
an Angel Radio for the older generation in Lockerbie (The Angel of the North).
During this report period the Station Manager of Angel Radio in Havant has been
able to provide assistance to the Managers of Angel Radio Isle of Wight. Over 2,000
radio shows, produced in Havant, have been provided as mp3 files to compliment the
Isle of Wight‟s programme schedule. New equipment was installed in the Isle of
Wight studio by Havant‟s Station Manager, who also replaced a failed transmission
antenna and cable run. On many occasions we have been able to point older people,
who have contacted us in Southampton, Fareham and Gosport, to the Isle of Wight
frequency of 91.5 MHz FM. We have also forwarded emails to the Isle of Wight if
they have been of interest to older people in range of their transmitter.
Angel Radio continues to provide information of a very local nature, including the
6
local weather, local tide times, local events, local cinema and theatre listings, local
service providers and many other items of a strictly local nature.
We have also been able to negotiate several exclusive deals for Angel Radio
listeners, including – discounted fares on coach trips, discounted theatre tickets, free
denture checks, and other unique bargains. On one occasion we were able to
negotiate an old-time music hall ticket price reduction of £5 per person.
Angel Radio continues to ensure its output is relevant to its audience and is not
duplicating irrelevant information aired by other stations heard within the Borough of
Havant.
During this report period Angel Radio has provided free promotion for even more
local service providers than previously, and has provided more free promotion of
local events than ever before (see Social Gain Objectives (b) for partial list.
During this report period the BBC received much criticism for cutting back their
„nostalgia‟ output on BBC Radio 2 and on local BBC radio stations. It is not for Angel
Radio to comment on the rights or wrongs of this, but we can say that the negative
press for the BBC has resulted in positive press for Angel Radio‟s nostalgia output.
Mentions in several national newspapers and magazines, and indeed on the BBC
itself, has brought our station to a wider audience of older people. In some contacts
from new listeners we have received criticism for aiming our station entirely at an
older audience as the contacts rightly state that our music output is enjoyed by young
and old alike. Replies to these new listeners explain that our station is licensed to
serve older people and we therefore view younger listeners as welcome eavesdroppers.
One of the casualties of the BBC „nostalgia‟ cutbacks was Malcolm Laycock.
Following his acrimonious departure from BBC Radio 2, Malcolm said in emails to
Angel Radio that he was going to take a holiday and then explore the possibility of
presenting programmes for Angel. Sadly Malcolm died before any programmes could
be aired, but the fact that such a well respected broadcaster would consider Angel
Radio to be the next outlet for his talents raises our own self esteem, and provides
more evidence of the commercial potential of our station.

1.4
Key commitments: Social gain objectives (b) The facilitation of discussion and
the expression of opinion

Social gain objectives (b)

The service will provide airtime and allow the opportunity for local groups to
debate and discuss topics, encouraging audience participation using a variety
of methods.

Reminiscence programming allows individuals to share memories
with other listeners.

Individuals are encouraged and helped to produce their own output
METHODS OF PARTICIPATION
While other, much more affluent, radio stations are using premium rate telephone
numbers to make money, Angel Radio has continued to provide its listeners with a
free-phone number. This has certainly encouraged listener participation.
Angel Radio programmes such as the Monday Club and Open House have enabled
many listeners to get on air live via their telephones and for those too nervous to talk
on air we provide receptionists who can take messages and pass them to the on air
presenters. At times when the reception desk is unmanned there is an answerphone. Our website now has an „email us‟ button on the front page which, when
clicked, brings up a very simple contact form, which goes direct to the on air
presenter. Some programmes have their own email addresses for listener contact,
such as the very popular „Yesterday‟s News‟ which looks at the local news from
exactly 60 years previous to the day of broadcast and encourages listeners to send
in their own memories of the period. Listeners are also urged to write to, or visit our
studios, which are located in the centre of Havant‟s shopping district, not in an out of
town industrial estate.
Other programmes, which encourage listener participation, include –
White Night – Asks listeners to produce quizzes & puzzles.
Radio Doctor – Looking for listener‟s medical questions.
Saturday Safari – Asking listeners for humorous poems, jokes, etc.
Breakfast Bustle – Looking for listener‟s thoughts on programmes, topical issues, etc.
Fireside Chat – Listener‟s lifetime memories.
Community Noticeboard – Encourages listeners to share details of community
groups who have been of service to them.

Blood Donor sessions
Dear Mildred
Thank you for supporting our Blood donor Session at Leigh park Community Centre
this Saturday 16th January 2010 - this is an extra session because
We are trying to maintain blood stocks after losing a couple of sessions due to the
snow.
We would be so grateful if you could mention our session over the radio as we have
many listeners from Portsmouth to Liphook who listen to your show and I listen to
your afternoon shows as I travel to the communities off of the A3.
If you are able to mention any of our other sessions we would be extremely grateful
kind regards
Brian
In addition to free commercials many local groups were also interviewed on air about
their work. The interviews with representatives from these groups generally take the
form of one informal chat of approximately 5 minutes, which is aired during the
breakfast programme. A second interview, which is more in depth, lasts between 20
minutes and 50 minutes and is aired before lunchtime, and a short commercial
providing contact details of the group is also produced. The two interviews and the
commercial are all produced in one recording session at a time to suit the
interviewee. Groups and individuals using Angel Radio in this way include –
Councillor Anne Buckley – Proposed Havant Hospital

Tony
Many thanks for yesterday's Broadcast ....I listened to some of it....I did not think I
would be able to listen to my own voice but you made so interesting that I was sorry
that I had to get things ready for Mass at 9.00 am. Well done ....you are a natural.
I came across several people who were listening too.
I also checked out your web page which is fantastic. What about links to the
Churches in Havant and links from our websites to the Station.
Well Done again and thanks
Fr Tom Grufferty
HBTN (Havant Borough Talking News) is a local group producing 60-minute news
programmes on cassette tapes and CDs for the blind and partially sighted. As many
of our listeners are blind or partially sighted, we have commissioned HBTN to
produce abridged versions of each of their fortnightly programmes, each of up to 12
minutes duration, for airing on Angel Radio. These are now aired twice a week.
DAILY EVENTS DIARY
Our Breakfast Bustle programme offers a daily airing of local events information.
Between 10 and 20 events are publicised every day. The total year‟s listing is too
long to fully reproduce, but the following list gives an indication of a few of this
period‟s events publicised by Angel radio - Playday, a free family fun day at Staunton
Country Park , Leigh Park Gardens / Portsmouth Heritage Open Day / Electric
Blanket testing / Voluntary sector network meeting / Cats Protection Fundraising Day
at the home of Sir Patrick Moore / cinema listings for Senior Screen / events at the
local arts centre / meetings of the complimentary health groups / theatre listings /
exercise groups / walking to heath /
BEREAVED
It is well known that Angel Radio staff and listeners support other staff and listeners
who have recently lost a loved one. Additionally this report period we recorded an
interview at the home of one of our recently bereaved listeners, Kathy Fisher, whose
husband had died a month previous. The interview had a duel purpose. Firstly to
enable other listeners to understand what a bereaved person goes through and what
their needs are. Secondly as further bereavement therapy for Kathy, to allow her to
talk about her departed husband and reminisce.
INDIVIDUALS ENCOURAGED TO PRODUCE THEIR OWN OUTPUT
* Ron Missellbrook, as mentioned in our last report, is a local poet, songwriter and
performer well known to Angel Radio listeners. During this report period we again
encouraged Ron to write and record stories, poems, songs, etc and record them for
air. Ron‟s poem, the Label on Imperial Leather soap, was the subject of a letter in the
Daily Telegraph, which had 3 replies printed the following day. Ron also produced a
11
series of short daily humorous pieces aired each morning.
* Jeannie Adlam age 74, our short story-writer and documentary producer,
continued to write and record her stories for Angel listeners. Each story takes
approximately 7 days to write, 2 days to proof and practice, and 3 hours to record
and edit. Jeannie also wrote and produced several more documentaries this period,
including a 4-hour programme about Harry James and a 2.5-hour documentary about
Gene Kelly.
* Audrey Anderson, age 88, who had just joined our team at the end of the last
report period, has continued to produce programmes about her interesting life and
very clear memories. Her programmes include memories of fair-grounds, memories
of Bristol, memories of the Cotswolds, smugglers in old Cornwall, etc. Audrey states
that Angel Radio “saved my life”.
* Eileen Trodd, age 73, has been with the Angel Radio team for several years, and
has produced several enjoyable programmes, but during this report period she has
been encouraged by audience response to produce very many more longer
programmes on themes supplied by the listeners.
* Pete Pitman, joined the team at the end of the last report period to assist with
programme editing. This report period he has presented a 10-part programme about
RAF Tangmere*(see below), a series of 30 programmes featuring stage musicals,
and several Gilbert & Sulivan operettas. He also engineers and edits programmes
produced and presented by Mark Acheson (Yesterday‟s News) and Marilyn Penketh
(Ray‟s Radiogram)
* Val Andrews had previously written several very short stories for Angel Radio. She
recently suffered a severe stroke and now has difficulty speaking. However she
expressed an interest in sponsoring a programme. Pat Evans, one of our presenters,
was trained to use the Flashmic and to conduct an interview. She took the Flashmic
to Val‟s house and recorded Val‟s sponsorship announcements with her. This
ensures Val still feels part of the Angel Team as she will hear her own voice before
and after the sponsored programme. Pat also patiently recorded a fireside chat with
Val, helping her to remember events in her life and allowing her to re-record as many
times as she needed. The resultant mass of recorded material was used by Pat as
part of her training to Edit.
* Jean Morgan is one of our programme sponsors. She was persuaded to come to
the studio to record her own sponsorship announcements. This done, she was then
asked if she would like to record a „Good Morning‟ show, which she has done and
has now written the scripts for several other programmes.
* Richard Sparks is a new recruit, disabled due to neck and back injuries, he also
first came in front of a microphone to record sponsorship announcements. Following
this he expressed an interest in recording a series of 30 minute programmes about
novelty songs. As Richard‟s grammar and comprehension are not his strongest
points it took a few weeks to find the best method of producing his programmes. Our
most patient Technician, Martin Kirby, has worked with Richard and he has now
produced 38 programmes with him.
* Dave Cottrell is a local man who runs the Johnnie Ray fan club. On the
anniversary of the birth of Johnnie Ray Angel Radio aired 3 special programmes,
produced by Dave Cottrell, documenting different aspects of Johnnie‟s career.
Hi Tony. Many many thanks for making today a Johnnie Ray Day. I have forwarded
12
your e-mail on to Joy Hanni in America and Dawna McLeod in Canada who will be
listening in. Hope they remember the time differences!! Thanks again you are a
STAR. Cheers Dave Cottrell
* David Penrose, (pictured below) is a local actor. He originally approached us to
produce a one-off presentation of a reading of Sherlock Holmes‟ Hound of the
Baskervilles in 8 parts. So popular was the production, we asked David to come on
air and ask listeners to provide him with ideas for another series of readings. He was
very encouraged by audience response and, over the Christmas period, read
Dickens‟ A Christmas Carol in 12 episodes.
David Penrose reading A Christmas Carol on air
TANGMERE AVIATION MUSEUM
* Pete Pitman is a volunteer at Tangmere Aviation Museum. When he joined Angel
Radio it was decided we should produce a series of programmes to inform listeners
about the main exhibition areas of the museum and also enable our blind listeners to
have a virtual tour of the exhibits. The resultant 10-part series was a great success. It
brought many congratulatory telephone calls, emails and letters. Many listeners have
reported visiting the museum as a result of the series and the series is going to go
into professionally produced packaging as 2 CDs and booklet to raise funds for Angel
Radio and the museum.
Tony
The Tangmere programmes bought back some 'happy' memories of my posting there
in 1947. It was as I saw it a well constructed place good built billet blocks and very
good showers with ample hot water. Two or four tennis courts and an EVT section
'Education Vocational Training' where a good supply of books, a decent piano, and a
good radiogram with a fine selection of jazz and swing. The latter I often wondered
who may have played them before off on an 'op'? The camp cinema was first class,
one film I remember "King Kong"!!!
The programmes have been so well put together and so informative well done.

Gwen Andrews‟ mum was a village district nurse and midwife all of her working life.
She delivered over 1,000 local babies. Gwen was interviewed as part of our ongoing
oral history project and produced a 2 hour programme.

NEWS FROM HAVANT BOROUGH COUNCIL
In addition to our regular reporting of press releases from Havant Borough Council
we now air news report roundup, which is a 10-minute audio production by the
Communications team at Havant Borough Council.
AIRTIME FOR LOCAL GROUPS + AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
In 2009 Angel Radio provided daily airtime and sponsorship for the 2nd Havant
Literary Festival. Angel Radio was also a financial sponsor of the Festival.
At Christmas 2009 Angel Radio broadcast 2 sets of „Nine Lessons and Carols‟ live.
The first was from Stornoway in the far north of Scotland and the second was from
14
St. Faith‟s Church in the centre of Havant.
Publicity was given to the proposed formation of a new club for the 55+ age group in
Waterlooville. On the day of the official launch Angel Radio aired the speeches and
interviewed the group‟s founder.
Manor Trust, an older person‟s housing charity, has had several events promoted,
including their annual Garden Party.
The local libraries service were given the opportunity to produce a regular 15 minute
programme featuring „Book of the Month‟, CD of the Month, and Video of the Month,
together with a monthly update of library events. Unfortunately only 3 editions of this
programme were produced as the library staff couldn‟t get their act together, nor
could they provide the continuity required for this type of programme.
* We provided on air and webpage promotion for the White Horse Inn, a local pub‟s
Charity Food, Beer and Music festival in support of Naomi House Children's
Hospice.
* Following a mention about Angel Radio in the Radio Times we received many
letters, emails and telephone calls. We read out messages from readers to our
listeners and some valuable reminiscences were sparked and old friends
reacquainted –
Bonjour & hello!
Thanks to one of your listeners mentioning 'Angel Radio' in last weeks 'Radio Times'
I have been having a lovely time this week discovering your station on-line.
I live in France now but some years ago - 1984 - 1994 lived in Lovedean and worked
for IBM at Anchorage Park. My husband Kevin worked at IBM Havant. We
both loved Havant and am so pleased to hear and see this brilliant station of
yours, long may it continue.
I have only just turned 60 and love music of all genres but your station is just what I
have been looking for.
Sorry if I have rambled on a bit, I dare say you have been inundated since the
publicity!
Lastly, I shall be passing on the good news of my discovery to my friends everywhere!
Sue Ryder
During this period we have continued to bring live guests into the Angel Radio studio
to entertain, inform and, in some cases, to reminisce. Some of our guests have been
famous people who are continuing to perform into their old age, which highlights the
talent and stamina that older people can have and hopefully acts as a spur to our
listeners. Well known older people interviewed on Angel Radio include

During the 1940s she sang
with dance bands and in
the 1950s was regularly on
TV. She is now in her 80s
and is still performing
regularly. During the
interview Rosemary said
that she had been
interviewed hundreds of
times, often by people who
had little interest in, or
knowledge of, music of the
past. However of Angel
Radio‟s interviewer she
said “A true professional
who really knows his
subject”.

NOSTALGIA CAN ALSO MEAN „NEW‟*
Although, apart from our up to date information programmes, Angel is based in
nostalgia, but many people are hearing things for the first time and being introduced
to records and artists who are new to them. The following letter highlights an
example of this –
Hello Tony,
I am the last of the Smith boys (Sons of Mavis (and Maurice)) of West Leigh to
contact you to say thank you for your time and effort which has given mum a great
deal of pleasure in the last couple of years, please keep up the good work. Mum
through your station discovered the Voice of Reggie Goff, and I am glad to say my
other half Carole tracked down a CD. which we gave to Dad to give to mum for the
Christmas before last or was it the year before time flies by, so even although dad
didn't listen a lot to Angel before he died, your station enabled us to obtain something
which he got pleasure out of, by giving to mum!
Thanks once more Brian Smith

YOUNGSTER CO-HOSTS 2-HOUR SHOW
* Elizabeth Jeffrey, a teenage member of an amateur theatre group was invited onto
one of our „Monday Club‟ chat programmes for a 10 minute interview and ended up
co-hosting the entire programme. She later sent the following email –
Hey Tony
Just a quick note to say thank you so much for the CD, and to thank you once again
for having me on the show! It is so wonderful for theatre practitioners to find support
within their community, especially the new ones!
Thank you once again
Hope all is well
Best
Elizabeth
The host of the show sent the following email –
Tony
Many thanks for the kind comments for the Monday Club you gave us this morning
on your Breakfast Show - Indeed the talented and very well spoken Elizabeth was
a joy to have in the studio and I think she enjoyed every minute - I did mention to her
in advance that we‟d get her in just for a ten minute chat‟ but she did the whole two
and a half hours with me and I hope the listeners enjoyed her youthful enthusiasm
and fun.
All the best
Pete
Younger people seem to enjoy Angel Radio as much as older people and it has
become quite a cult at local colleges. We often receive surprisingly complimentary

NOSTALGIA ITEMS LOANED TO MUSEUM AND THEATRE GROUP
* Angel Radio has, this report period, loaned many items from its collection of 1950s
memorabilia to Portsmouth Museum to enhance their Portsmouth Pop: The Birth of
Rock & Roll exhibition.
During this report period items of memorabilia have also been loaned to Winchester
based Prime Time Theatre Company for use in its touring „Good Old Days‟ show.
Angel Radio interviewed Ros and Peter Liddiard, from Prime Theatre. The interview
was aired on Angel Radio in Havant and also on Angel Radio Isle of Wight as the
shows are being staged in areas covered by both stations. The shows publicised on
Angel were all sell outs.
URGENT & EMERGENCY MESSAGES AIRED VIA ANGEL RADIO
* On several occasions we have been able to air urgent messages from Trading
Standards to warn residents that rogue callers are operating in specific areas. Angel
Radio is part of an „Early Warning Network‟ which publicises reports of rogue traders.
Notices from the police, Angel Radio listeners and Trading Standards are aired within
minutes of us receiving the information –
Warning - Rogue Traders are cold calling in the Havant area offering tree pruning
and gardening work. These traders are not providing consumers with the required
notice of right to cancel, which gives consumers a 7 day cooling off period, as
required by law.
If anyone has any information about these traders or requires any advice on doorstep
crime they can contact Hampshire County Council's Quick Response Team on
01962 833666, where specially trained officers are on hand to provide assistance.
Information from Angel Radio listeners regarding rogue traders is sent to the police
and Trading Standards. During this period Angel Radio was itself targeted by a rogue
trader. A man wearing carpet layer‟s tool belt came to the studio and said “I‟ve been
laying carpet in a shop in the Meridian Centre and they ordered 4 rolls too many.
They are worth £400 per roll, but you can have them at £65.” The training to spot
rogue traders that we have regularly imparted to our listeners enabled us to be alert
to this rogue. First – The shops in the Meridian Centre have marble floors, not
carpets. Second – A shop doesn‟t order carpet by the roll and then find a carpet
layer to fit it. The carpet layer measures up and then provides and fits the correct
size. Third – A shopkeeper is not going to say “Whoops we seem to have ordered
£1,600 worth of carpet too much. Oh well just go and see if you can get £65 for it.”
Fourth – The „fitter‟ had a tool-belt to provide the appearance of authenticity, but
sadly, no tools. Fifth – The „fitter‟ showed extreme discomfort and rapidly made his
exit when photographed by Angel Radio‟s Station Manager. This incident highlights
the value of our warnings. We believe we have saved local older people a lot of
money and stress by keeping them alert to crooked cold callers.
PATRIOTIC
Our listeners seem to enjoy patriotic music and celebrating patriotic days. Although
we suspect we are being very politically incorrect, we have never received a single
complaint, but always receive many compliments for our celebrations of St George‟s
Day, the Queen‟s Birthday, VE Day, English Language Day, etc.
18
MESSAGES
Messages for local shipping have also been aired on several occasions, eg –
Local Notice to Mariners No 10 of 2009
WEST WINNER BEACON
1. Mariners are advised that West Winner Beacon in the entrance to Chichester
Harbour has been replaced. The new pile is situated approximately 10 metres west
of the original location, in position: 50° 46´.881 N, 00° 55´.984 W
The beacon displays the same top-mark and light character: Q.G.
Angel Radio continuously reminds listeners to be aware of scam emails and
telephone calls. Each new scam that we are informed of is explained to listeners. For
example –
HMRC warns of „real risk‟ from scam emails
Criminal gangs are targeting taxpayers with thousands of scam emails offering bogus
tax refunds. The online attacks, known as „phishing‟, have peaked during July leading
to increased reports of fraud to HM Revenue & Customs.
* West Sussex Primary Care Trust keeps us informed of items of interest to our
older listeners in the Chichester area bordering the Borough of Havant.
* Drayton and Farlington Action Group keeps us informed of items of interest to our
older listeners in the northern Portsmouth area, which borders the Borough of
Havant.
* Portsmouth City Council uses Angel Radio on a daily basis to disseminate
information regarding events, recycling centres, roadworks, etc.
* William Dawson, an events diary collator, keeps us informed of amateur theatre
productions in the Portsmouth area.
* Through networking we have created a valuable list of contacts. Many of these
contacts then pass on to their clients information about the services provided by
Angel Radio –
Hi Tony…
Thank you so much for sending this through and for your time the other day. Please
do send an image through and I can add it to the News Item.
I thought of you the other day because I met a very nice lady from Brendon Care
Clubs (Friendship Clubs for Older People) who I imagine you already know. Just in
case, her name was Lesley Lynton and their website is www.brendoncare.org.uk
she gave me her card if you need contact details.
I‟d love to come back in and understand more about what you do and what I might be
able to do to help as I‟m meeting people across the area all the time.
Please let me know!
Best regards.

“Promoting Local Businesses, News & Events Across The Havant Borough”
During the bad weather in January 2010 Angel Radio provided listeners with updates
of roads closed, changes to bus and train services, shop opening hours and the
availability of staple food items, etc (see elsewhere in this report for more details)
Angel Radio has also aired important marine messages from Chichester Harbour
Master including news of the forthcoming beach re-nourishment scheme, which
19
meant a large area of Hayling Island beach was closed to the public.
Hayling Island – During this report period we ran many free-ads for events on
Hayling. These included –
Open air events at the Plaza on Eaststoke Corner
Hayling Light Railway
Hayling Beer Festival (Ale-ing Beer Fest)
Hayling Community Centre
The Station Theatre
Tournerbury Golf Club - Free Lessons
A vintage Edwardian steam locomotive on show
. . . . . and events in several churches around the island.
Angel Radio also had a presence at, and promoted, a day of events at Hayling
Library. Several visitors were interviewed for inclusion in Angel Radio‟s own oral
history library.
AIRTIME FOR SCHOOL AND FACTORY REUNIONS
* In 2009/10 Angel Radio publicised several school and factory reunions.
AIRTIME TO PROMOTE „HEALTH‟
* Havant Borough Council and Portsmouth City Council run many health
improvement schemes. Angel Radio publicises these regularly, has interviewed
many of the trainers and scheme co-ordinators, and has produced many free
commercials promoting the various schemes. These free-ads are aired in gaps
between programmes, in ad-breaks which are short of paid ads, and in our
Community Noticeboard slots. Whenever a new exercise group, for older people, is
formed by Havant Borough Council we give airtime for an interview with the coordinator and continue to publicise the event each week in our „Whats on Diary‟.
* We produced a series of informative drop-ins about falls and fall prevention. These
drop-ins were also used to produce 2 complete programmes about falls and fall
prevention. The first programme was entertaining and informative, while the second
just contained relevant information. All of the drop-ins and programmes were
transferred to a set of CDs, which were given to the Community Rehabilitation Team
and The Victory Rehabilitation Unit in Portsmouth.
Hi Tony
Many, many, thanks for all your efforts with this. Rest assured your CDs will be well
used and will make a real difference in helping to reduce older people falling in
Portsmouth.
Thanks again and regards.
Paul Frampton
Acting Team Manager
AIRTIME TO PROMOTE HAVANT GOOD NEIGHBOURS
* Last report period we interviewed the Chairman of the Waterlooville & Purbrook
Good Neighbours Group. This report period we provided publicity for Havant Good
Neighbours with a free-ad, which regularly airs on our Community Notice-board
programme and at other times when space allows.
AIRTIME TO AMERICAN COUPLE IN OLDER PERSON‟S RETIREMENT
COMMUNITY
* This report period we aired a live 2 hour discussion with an older couple living in a
retirement complex in Cupertino, California, USA. The couple, Alan & Betty Dale,
talked about their life in England before moving to the USA, their working life in the
USA, and their retirement to the older person‟s retirement village.
20
Tony,
The programme from the USA at 4pm today was most enjoyable a perfect follow up
to the excellent chat you had with them earlier this year, Another treat for us at
Angel Radio.

REMINISCENCE PROGRAMMING – FIRESIDE CHATS
Our popular programme of fireside chats continues to receive much praise from
interviewees, listeners and educationalists who use the recordings for oral history
purposes.
Fireside chats are relaxed, informal and friendly, and allow „ordinary‟ people to talk
about the subject they know best – themselves.
Jan Gough – Whenever the local Age Concern Resource Centre needs publicity to
promote an event or a new service being introduced Jan knows she can drop into the
studio, record her items and have them aired within a few hours. We were able to
provide this service on 6 occasions this period.
Many other guests (too many to list) from community groups either came on air or
had their information read on air.
MUSIC FOR FUNERALS
Angel Radio‟s 127,000 track record library continues to be a source of the music
played at many funerals. We have, on numerous occasions, been able to supply
favourite old songs, long since unavailable, to relatives on audio CD to play at
funerals. This service is entirely free of charge, although often a donation is made of
a much higher value than we would have made through charging for the service.
We're listening to Ian Horner's sunshine themed "Let's Be Sentimental" over the
internet. Here in San Francisco it's a cloudy 55 deg F morning. So much for "sunny"
California; we're glad to be getting a great ray of sunshine from Havant, though.
Thank you for your wonderful music and best wishes for the future
Mark Herbert.

Key commitments: Social gain objectives (c) The provision (whether by
means of programmes included in the service or otherwise) of education or
training to individuals not employed by the person providing the service
Social gain objectives (c)
* The service will encourage involvement with the service from the target
community. Information about training will form part of the programming
output and the station will endeavour to engage with the local colleges /
community centres about available courses for the community.
During this report period Havant Borough Council held a community event in
Havant Park on Saturday 6 June 2009. “Party in the Park” attracted a
considerable number of local residents to this event. The main theme of the
event was Jobs and Skills. However, in order to attract the public Angel
Radio publicised the event free of charge and also had a stand at the event.
The event was deemed such a success it is being held again during the
summer of 2010.
This report period Angel Radio has aired information about many courses,
meetings and education days run by the U3A (University of the Third Age),
the WEA (Workers Education Authority) and independent clubs too numerous
to list, but including –
Hayling Island Camera Club
Rowlands Castle Painting Society
Havant Fuchsia Club
Bedhampton Hall Dance Club
Cowplain Line-dancers
Angel Radio publicised the story of a group of day activity centre users proving that
modern computer consoles aren‟t just for the young. Older people going along to Age
Concern‟s day services at the Bradbury Centre, Kingston Road, have been improving
their balance and co-ordination thanks to the purchase of a Wii-fit console. Angel
Radio also gave contact details of the Centre and helped to swell participant
numbers.
Weekly talks at the Havant Complementary Health Group meetings are publicised on
air, brochures are available from our shop and listings are included on our website.
Angel Radio publicised a series of new courses for mature unemployed people and
has also include several relevant job vacancies in its „Whats on Diary‟ programming.
Jamie Beaton from Havant Borough Council has been on air talking about „The Big
Lunch‟ and „Intergeneration Gardening‟.
Age Concern Havant were assisted in the production of their DVD promo by Angel
Radio providing recordings of visitors to the H50 Coffee Morning talking about their
reasons for attending the event.
Portsea Action Group was celebrating its 10 years of existence and given free
publicity in several on air news items. Celebrations included the opening of a new
22
pharmacy and Peace Garden, which is a pilot of a new style of premises offering free
health checks as well as appointments for advice on stopping smoking, weight loss,
asthma, minor ailments and medicine use review.
Portsmouth City Council organised many events of interest to older people. Angel
Radio promoted many of these, including –
The Eat Well Age Well programme from 23 September to 25 November.
Portsmouth‟s Healthy Towns project outdoor fitness equipment.
MEND – leads the way to healthy eating
Havant Borough Council has joined forces again with MEND to start the sixth
programme to promote a healthy lifestyle for children aged between 7 and 13 years,
who are overweight or struggle to eat a healthy balanced diet.
NUTRITION EDUCATION
We promoted MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do-it!) a community, family-based
programme. The programme aims to raise self esteem and confidence, whilst
encouraging exercise and healthy eating. It was 10 week, fun and interactive
programme for children and their families. Part of the programme involves learning
how to understand food labels and putting theory into practice with a visit to a local
supermarket.
TRIGGER
Angel Radio is a member of the Older People's Well-Being Trigger Tool, which has
now been in place for 12 months.
GETTING OLDER PEOPLE OUT & ABOUT
Angel Radio has been promoting exercise classes, coffee mornings, and a host of
entertainments. When our presenter Pete Cross interviewed Graham Wright, Leader
of New Foxtrot Serenaders, a band playing 1920s and 1930s style music, their live
show at a local theatre reported a large number of Angel Radio listeners present,
with one listener in her 80s dancing in the aisle.
Angel Radio continues to support the „Senior Screen‟ film shows at the local cinema,
and provides transport when possible.
ALTERNATIVE ENTERTAINMENT
Even given the very long periods of listening by its audience, Angel Radio
understands that people may like, on occasions, to get their entertainment and
information from other sources. Therefore we are entirely happy to provide listings of
TV programmes of interest to older people, or of a nostalgic nature. We also point
listeners to other radio stations where appropriate –
Hi Tony,
No doubt in your debt once more -----------~~Radio Dismuke is now streaming in on
my Roberts 202 A super little station perhaps in small doses. Very many thanks for
your help in getting it onto the Roberts 202.
Glad that another person shares your views if in a very different way at least they
have "our" interests.
23
Best wishes and many thanks.........Ian.
Many older people are still unhappy to use the internet. Angel Radio has encouraged
older people to look at our website and listen on-line as a way to introduce them to
the worldwide web. When listeners have encountered problems with their PC when
trying to hear Angel Radio, or access our website we have provide email and
telephone assistance. One such case was Derek Smith who emailed us
Following your letter in today's Telegraph I attempted to listen to some music from
your station. All I could get was a click when I followed the instructions. What am I
doing wrong please?
Derek Smith
Derek
I'm sorry to learn that you can't hear Angel Radio.
I'm happy to offer advice.
I know the streams are all okay as I've had lots of emails from grateful Telegraph
readers today.
Please let me know which media player you use (Windows / Winamp / Real / iTunes /
etc.) and I will let you know a few of the simple problems that sometimes crop up.
Tony Smith
Tony
Many thanks for your quick reply.
I use an Acer aspire laptop with Windows XP
Derek Smith
PS I am 82 so your kind of music may well be right up my street!!!!
Dear Derek
Thank you for your email. I've spoken to our technical chap. His first suggestions are
as follows:
On the picture of the old radio (on our welcome page) you can either click the panel
which says 'LISTEN LIVE' or click the top one of the 4 buttons on the left hand side of
the radio, it says 'ANGEL', or click the orange LISTEN LIVE button on the left hand
side of the page.
All of these links will take you to a page which allows you to choose the most suitable
media player for your PC. The most popular for your PC is WINDOWS MEDIA
PLAYER.
You will need to ensure your telecoms connection is broadband as our streams do
not work on dial up connections.
You need to have your speakers on and turned up.
I hope that enables you to join our little oasis of nostalgia.
If you continue to have problems listening to Angel Radio please email me your
telephone number so that our technical chap can call you and talk you through the
process.
Tony Smith : Founder / Manager
Tony
I am beginning to wonder what I have done to deserve all this attention. You will be
pleased to know (and will probably heave a big sigh of relief) that my problem is
solved and I have been able to have a good listen today. I found that I was unable to
get Angel because I had not clicked on to something which said it was blocked but
which gave me the option of unblocking. I had not seen it before.
A Happy New Year to you and success to Angel
Derek
The offering of this form of IT assistance has been undertaken many times by Angel
Radio during the report period and on all but one occasion it has been successful.

Key commitments: Social gain objectives (d) The better understanding of
the particular community and the strengthening of the links within it
Social gain objectives (d)
* The main aim of Angel Radio is to keep the over 60s informed about issues
of interest and relevance, and to enable them to share their interests and
concerns with each other.
* Angel Radio will hold informal discussion meetings which will be open for the
whole community to attend. The community will be invited to visit the studios
and share views on programming topics.
The residents of the Borough of Havant were given the opportunity have their input
included in plans for development of the borough over the next decade. Angel Radio
interviewed the leader of Havant Borough Council and 6 councillors, who are portfolio
holders, about their work and how local people can influence the outcomes. Angel
Radio also aired an interview with Eleanor Evans Community Planning Advisor
Planning Aid South, to publicise her availability to help people decide how best to
influence the council‟s Planning Office. Open days and „Come and speak to your
Councillor‟ days were publicised on Angel Radio. We were informed that at previous
meetings of this kind “hardly anybody turned up” whereas over 200 members of the
public attended following the publicity on Angel.
The monthly coffee mornings with hosted by Age Concern and publicised and
presented by Angel Radio have continued throughout the period. Funding was granted
to Age Concern to cover use of the premises and subsidised refreshments. Angel
Radio provides the entertainment (both live and recorded) and team members for
listeners to come and chat to. We also produce free radio commercials for the
community groups manning information stands at the coffee mornings. Groups
receiving free commercials include –
Chichester & Havant Shopmobility
Community Innovations
Dunsbury Way Clinic
Havant Good Neighbours
Havant Meals on Wheels
Havant Health Trainers
Open Sight
Tax Help for Older People
Testway Support
The following letter, from the Manager of Age Concern Havant, was sent to groups who
manned information stands at the Easter 2009 Coffee Morning
Thank you all so much for helping to make our Easter Coffee Morning such a success
on Tuesday, 7th April. We estimate well over 150 Older People attended, and it was a
really fun morning. I hope you found all of your information and services were of
interest to the guests.
Will update you as soon as we hear about making it a regular event so that we can
send out a timetable for you to pick dates throughout the year, if we are successful with
the funding bids.
25
So watch this space!!
Kind regards,
Jan
This period Angel Radio has provided the PA, and had staff available to chat to the
public. Several of the events have drawn crowds of many thousands.

Angel Radio‟s Station Manager was the Master of Ceremonies at the all day Age
Concern Conference (Window on Wellbeing) at South Downs College. He was also a
panel-member during the conference‟s afternoon Question & Answer session. Angel
Radio also provided a PowerPoint presentation about the radio station.
As part of the Age Concern Window on
Wellbeing Conference Angel Radio
provided an audio/visual piece to
highlight the work undertaken by a local
older person‟s befriending group.
The piece, which was an interview with
one of the group‟s clients, was presented
without the client‟s name being disclosed
and accompanied by photographs, taken
by Angel Radio, in which the client‟s face
is not seen.
The audio/visual piece received the
biggest round of applause of the day.
The anonymous client
Angel Radio also held a full formal meeting attended by staff and listeners. An update
of our 3rd attempt to get on DAB was given. Our Accountant, Vicky, spoke about the
paperwork involved in becoming a registered charity and the duties of Trustees. Our
being granted the Queen‟s Award was announced. It was explained that this year Angel
Radio was the only company in the whole of Hampshire to receive the award.
Several talks about the work of Angel Radio were given to local community groups,
some included Powerpoint presentations, quizzes and show-&-tell items. Groups
include –
Havant Fuchsia Club,
Rotary Club
Retired Police Association
St Jude's fellowship
The Bradbury Centre
St Cuthbert's Afternoon Fellowship
A meeting and training session for Angel Radio receptionists was held. The importance
of the receptionist being the first point of contact between the listener and the radio
station was explained. A feedback session proved very useful.
26
A pub / restaurant was taken over for the afternoon when over 50 team members
attended the Angel Radio Christmas dinner.
Listeners came to the Angel Radio studio on several special occasions and chatted to
staff over nibbles and drinks.
Our Pay-to-Play fundraising days were also popular times for Angel Radio listeners to
pop in and chat to team members. Two Pay-to-Play days this period raised £5,000 for
our funds. Donations from internet listeners using PayPal were up considerably this
period, as were cheque payments.
Visitors to Angel Radio on one of our Pay-to-Play days. Steady streams of people come in
during the days, which raised a total of £5,000 towards station funds.
ITEMS OF INTEREST
Many news items and events of interest to older people have been publicised during
this report period including –
The lighting up of Southsea Castle with a special light show to mark the 500
anniversary of the coronation of King Henry VIII.
The anniversary of the Battle of Taranto. An Angel Radio listener spoke on air of his
memories of the battle.
An energy efficiency roadshow, with particular reference to advice for older people.
We produced short information drop-ins with Hampshire Trading Standards, Hampshire
Police and Hampshire Fire Safety.
Many varied churches have used us to publicise their community meetings, coffee
mornings, fairs, fates, etc.
27
Angel Radio airs a diary of amateur theatre productions of interest to older people. This
diary often includes children‟s school holiday activity information to assist grandparents
to find things to do with their grandchildren.
The Fit Food Fast festival in Portsmouth was well publicised by Angel Radio as it
provided ways to stay healthy through the credit crunch focusing on cooking tasty,
balanced meals on a tight budget.
Publicity was given to the workshop, held at Leigh Park carnival, funded by the Heritage
Lottery Fund, working with the Hampshire County Archive to encourage people to share
memories of Leigh Park before offering them the opportunity to work with an artist to
record a visual representation of those memories to be included in a time line scroll.
Publicity was given to „Bonaza‟ an event bringing together community groups working
for older people, and older people themselves.
We promoted the Horizon Users Group fundraising events at the Horizon Resource
Centre, Cosham off the Southampton Road.
Dear Mr Smith
The Horizon Users Group Fayre was well attended by Service Users, Staff, friends,
family and local residents which is reflected in the takings on the day of £1300 which
will be used by HUG to benefit physically disabled and sensory impaired adults who
attend the Horizon Resource Centre at Sundridge Close in Cosham also physically
disabled in the surrounding area.
Martin Stanley Chairman of HUG
Once again we regularly promoted the value of electric blanket testing, especially as
the Borough of Havant, in previous years, has had a particularly high failure rate with
104 out of 162 blankets failing safety tests.
REFUSALS
During this report period we have been asked to provide publicity for events which we
feel are outside of our remit. Therefore we have not publicised school events, multicultural events, modern music events.
During this report period we have been asked to support or air protest group‟s
grievances. While we obviously promote causes of value to older people, (for instance
Angel Radio interviewed a County Councillor leading the campaign for a local hospital)
we do not see the radio station as a protest tool. Therefore, when we receive requests,
such as the one below, we inform listeners of the date and time that a demonstration is
being held, but we do not in any way promote the causes of the protest.
On Wednesday 22nd July - Havant Labour Party and Unison - will be holding a demo
outside Havant Borough Office. We are protesting against proposed plans to privatise
council services - and are calling for a full public debate on the issue. For the past few
weeks we have been leading a petition campaign on the issue - and have spoken to at
least 1000 local people. Local people feel angry that they have not been consulted on
the current proposals - are alarmed at the Tory Council's total disregard for local
democracy/participation.
It would be great if you could cover the event next week.
Rob
Thank you for your email.
As a radio station we remain non-partisan and distance ourselves from politics.
However I will be pleased to announce details of your demo and let our listeners
28
decide if they support your aims.
Best wishes

encourage local participation and involvement at all levels including
management.
* Training - provide at least 8 older people every 12 months the opportunity
to undergo training for broadcasting and the opportunity to continue with the
service thereafter.
* Work experience - 1 placement every 6 months for broadcasting and 1
placement every 6 months for non broadcasting experience.
* Job start - to create 1 job start placement within the first 12 months of
broadcasting.
* Events - to host 1 public entertainment event each month.

TRAINING
Michael Duncan – university student‟s work experience included editing
* This report period we provided work experience for 4 younger persons –
Michael Duncan (pictured above) gained studio, technical, and commercial
production experience. As Michael‟s father owns a shop Michael‟s interest extended
to speaking to potential advertisers and he also produced a radio commercial, which
is currently airing on Angel Radio.
31
Robyn – our work experience girl editing her own programme
Robyn Codlin is an 18 year old college student whose aim is to be a TV weather
reporter. She has produced several short weather-related programmes and is now
producing longer programmes of her favourite old tunes.
James gaining work experience in the studio
James Uren came to us as a work experience student and has now joined the Angel
Team and comes in every week to act as studio technician to Angel Radio presenters
who are unable to work their own mixing desk controls. James has also produced a
32
„Music Box‟ programme on the theme of drumming records.
Our fourth work experience student was Leanne Cheater. She was aged 15 years
and completed her training with the production of a self-penned and self-voiced
documentary about Nina Simone.
This report period our IT technician, Chris Fosbrook, continued working on the record
library. We have added 7,000 records to the catalogue, bringing the current total to
127,000. He has added several search buttons, which enable us to find records by
date, library catalogue number, artist name, song title, and many other ways. We can
also print out request slips directly from the record library and, when we have
programmes presented by staff with limited vision, we can print requests in very large
100 point lettering. Chris has also created a database of financial donors, a database
of staff contact details and, for our Pay-to-Play days, a pledge and „paid‟ database.
The new record library is now available on PCs throughout the station. It has also
been made available to the homes of several presenters.
Further training sessions in the use of the new library have been provided for some
members of staff undertaking reception duties and many presenters. A total of 30
team members have had their training updated.

Other existing members of the Angel Radio team undertook further training. These
included –
Ange Wilkins – Given further production training to enable her to undertake a 10part series of programmes featuring music and news from each year of the 1950s.
Ange has also received training on the use of our portable recorder / mic and
interview teqhniques.
Juliette Bardin – Received training in interview techniques and use of the Flashmic.
Juliette used this training to produce a recorded interview at the home of Sir Patrick
Moore.
33
Angel Radio‟s Juliette Bardin and Sir Patrick Moore
Iris Fieldhouse – Given further studio training to enable her to operate guest
microphones to produce co-hosted request programmes.
Lesley Cheater – Given training to enable her to transfer shellac 78 rpm discs to
minidisc and mp3 files.
Vic White – Had further studio training to enable him to improve his series „Be my
Guest‟.
Audrey Anderson – Joined the team towards the end of the last report period and
had recorded one show. This report period Audrey has had further training in script
writing and presentation. She has now produced 6 programmes.
Pat Evans – Has received training in interview techniques and use of the Flashmic.
Pat has used this training to produce recorded interviews with a local author and an
Angel Radio listener who recently has a severe stroke. Pat has also received studio
engineering training and she has been trained to edit her own programmes.
Martin Miller – Has received further training in using Audacity as an editing tool.
Martin Kirby – Has received training in using Audacity as an editing tool.
Doug Adlam – Has produced over 300 x 30 minute lunchtime classical concerts for
Angel Radio in the past 5 years, but has now received further training to enable him
to produce and present our Christian Morning Service programmes (9am Sundays).
Dolly Ponsford – Is in her 80s and expressed a wish to produce programmes of her
favourite records, but does not want to present the programme. Dolly has received
training in producing a playlist and the programme is presented by another member
of the team.
* New trainees (not including 4 x Work Experience students) undergoing Angel
Radio training for the first time number 5.
Bob Sevier / Jean Morgan / Richard Sparks / David Penrose / Dolly Ponsford
* Members of the public were given airtime this period via personal appearances on
34
shows, via live telephone calls, via recorded telephone calls, and through letters and
emails.
Every weekday listener‟s contact with the station is aired during the 8am to 9am
„Breakfast Bustle‟ show. Additionally, on Mondays, listeners have the 8pm to
10.15pm Monday Club, which is an „open mic‟ programme for listeners to join in. On
Tuesdays the 12.30pm to 2.30pm programme is listener-led, as is the programme at
the same time on Thursdays. On Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm the programme
Open House is „open mic‟ for listener‟s participation.
* James Pusey of Havant Borough Council‟s Communications Department received
in-depth advice on the requirements of Angel Radio with regards to producing regular
newscasts on council related items.
Studio tours have been organised for a group of school children, foreign visitors, and
many local listeners.
Anne Lupton, in her late 80s, presents her show observed by schoolchildren
The following letter is self explanatory
When my dying mother (80) was in hospital (QA) in a coma and I was staying with
her (on a mattress on the floor), I tried to find something on the radio she might like
and found you! I certainly enjoyed the music and hope that Mum was aware of it too
in her last days.
The following letter is from distant listeners who brought us their mum‟s record
collection and took a studio tour while they were here.
I'm glad that some of the records were useful to you!
I told Mum what you were doing with the ones you didn't need & she was quite
pleased.
Thanks for the tour of your studios - Mike found it really interesting & hasn't stopped
telling our friends! We kept tuning into Angel while we were down your way & I have
forwarded the link to Mum so she can listen to it on the internet.

We were visited by a BBC Overseas chap called Stephen Martin, He runs a radiooriented blog and toured our studios and chatted to various team members for a
story to be added to his blog.
Hi Tony,
Thank you very much for your time and hospitality yesterday. It was an education for
me, and also very enjoyable.
I've drafted the blog post (attached) and wondered whether you'd have a few minutes
to quickly fact-check it?
Meanwhile, I'll choose some pictures to break-up the text.
With kind thanks,
Steve.

Key commitments: Accountability to the target community
Accountability to the target community
* Angel will undertake regular research into the target community's needs.
* It will provide a variety of means for the community to give feedback on the
service and content.
* A listener's report which will be subject to feedback and review by the
community will be produced.
ANGEL‟S FUTURE AND LISTENER‟S LETTERS
This report period listeners were given the choice to decide on Angel Radio‟s future.
On air announcements were made asking listeners to write to the radio station with
their views on whether they wanted to persuade the Station Manager to apply for the
5-year licence extension, or not, and how and why they had come to their decision.
“Your Question – should it keep going? Yes please – otherwise how will I keep up with
the past?”
Mr B P Boak, Emsworth
“This is my message of 100% total support for Angel Radio.
The programmes 24 hours a day are just a joy with music and entertainment to suit all
tastes. I just adore it. I have 4 radios in different rooms all tuned to Angel, also in my
car. So for me it is always on, even well into the early hours, because I don‟t sleep
well. All the people I meet that are part of the Angel Team are such lovely people, but
they wouldn‟t be with Angel otherwise.
Please, please, please get the licence renewed. It means so much to so many, many
people. To give joy and lift the spirits there is no other radio station to match it in any
way. “
Mrs A Anderson, Emsworth
“Unique is often misused but regarding Angel Radio it is correct. Tony Smith, Founder
and Manager ploughed his „all‟ into an idea that had been totally neglected by others.
His dedication and determination has paid off.
Angel Radio in Havant has a licence to broadcast music up to 1959. As a result the
sheer magnificence of composers, band leaders and singers, plus the many music
hall artists, can once more be heard with a wealth of talent sadly ignored by other
radio stations. The staff at Angel Radio give their services freely. As a result the joy
and friendly voice at the microphone, or when phoning, adds so much. Other
organisations take, take, while Angel Radio gives, gives.
Let this station remain as Tony originally began it. A great service to all ages and to
many senior citizens who sadly have been dismissed today.”
Mr R Pengilley
“I am writing to let you know that my beloved and adored grandfather, Fred Stock,
passed away peacefully at the grand old age of 94.
He was an avid listener of Angel Radio and was always talking about the station. He
and I would often sit and listen to you. He was a loveable character and will be missed
deeply, but through your station he found comfort, especially after the death of his
adored wife. I am certain that I too will find comfort from Angel Radio.
Thank you all so much for coming into the lives of dear people who live for their
memories and for the comfort you give them through your music. If I can persuade
you to continue in any way, in honour of my „pop‟ I‟d be only too willing” Ms A Sinfield

now overtaken letters received.

Why do you listen to Angel Radio?
I listen because it's relaxing, friendly, fun and comforting. Also because it brings back
lovely memories of my childhood and my Mum and Dad who were always singing - I

What do you particularly like about Angel Radio?
I love all of it!
What do you particularly dislike about Angel Radio?
There's nothing to dislike!

A big thank you to all of you who do such a wonderful job!
Hello Angel Radio
I have only just discovered your web site after reading the News this evening and how
interesting it is! I only had time for a quick visit to the site this evening but will
certainly be returning to it - also your radio station as well. How can I not have
already, when I am 69 years old?! Maybe because I feel 20 years younger!
I do so love the old songs and having had much older brothers and sisters was used
to hearing all those lovely songs of many years ago which one never forgets.
I shall certainly be tuning in tomorrow morning to listen - keep up the good work I have
been reading about. So good to hear that you are filling a much needed gap.
Best wishes

Why do you listen to Angel Radio?
It's different. And clearly providing an excellent service to the community.
What do you particularly like about Angel Radio?
It's providing a service and access to some sensational music that is simply not
available anywhere else. The number of sponsored programmes and advertisements
in hugely impressive for a community station. Am a particular follower of the daytime
programme looking back over old newspaper cuttings. The preparation and planning
for that programme must be immense, but the presenter's ability to entertain, inform
and bring back memories for listeners is excellent. As someone who was neither in
the area, or alive(!) in the eras I have heard featured, this is a fascinating, engaging
programme.
What do you particularly dislike about Angel Radio?
For the service it provides, nothing.

Great station. Am certainly out of the target age, but I listen in the car and online at

What do you particularly dislike about Angel Radio?
Not being able to pick it up properly wherever I go. This makes me sad :(
How would you improve Angel Radio?

time but even in Portsmouth the signal isn't very clear and as soon as I leave the area

Hello
Can Ange‟s Half Hour (Thurs, 5pm and Saturday, 6pm) be extended, please? I was
just getting into the swing of it, when the programme ended. I hadn‟t even finished my

tuned in at 5pm. I understand it went out half an hour earlier!
Thanks for all the good music

Hi
I was listening to your programme a couple of days ago early morning. Enjoying, it
as usual.
You played. Lets all sing like the birdies sing, Tweet, tweet tweet, tweet tweet etc.
Could you please let me know the correct title and artists (young girls).
I hope to get the grandchildren to learn it, to sing in the car etc

* The health benefits of Angel Radio are mentioned in a high percentage of

often the sound of the station benefits people who are actually ill. The following

EVERYTHING. It brings back so many memories for my Husband and myself.
My Husband has Alzheimer's, but he can still remember so many records from your
station and they really cheer him up.
Thank You
How could we improve Angel Radio?
Please could the Presenter on late Sunday evening talk a little louder, as I find his
voice often fades away. I turn the sound up, then the music just blares out and I have
to turn it down again. Still, that‟s a small price to pay for an excellent programme.
Dear ladies and gentleman,
I spent a very special afternoon in Berlin, Germany, lying in bed, suffering from
pneumonia, listening to ANGELRADIO from very far away.
What a charming, old-fashioned radio you are making - with lovely presenters and
tasteful music... I am very moved by your spirit!

The internet has enabled local listeners, through Angel Radio, to receive
messages and requests from distant friends and relatives –
Hello,
I am sending you this email for my Nan Mrs Nellie Teasdale from Longstock road who
was 100 years old this month. I spoke to my Nan today and she tells me she enjoys
your Sunday morning programme with a local vicar from Rowlands castle. She has
not managed to catch his name because it is said too fast for her advancing years; but
she adores the programme and wanted to let you know.

Dear Angel radio
I am e-mailing at the last minute hoping you can fit me in. I e-mail about 4 days ago
requesting my parents be mentioned on your station due to the fact that Saturday the
27th February is their 67th wedding anniversary. When ever I have made a request
before you have been kind enough to let me know you would honour it but this time I
have not heard so I am wondering if my e-mail did not arrive. If it is possible for you to
fit them in their names are Gladys and Sidney Culverhouse living in Bedhampton. I
would like them to know their daughter Carol and family from Canada are thinking of
them and wish them Love.
Dear Mr Smith,
Thank you for honouring my request for a song to my parents. I was in your station
two weeks ago whilst on a trip to Bedhampton. I'm sure you and your staff bring a lot
of joy to many people. I passed your email address on to my Mothers sister who lives
in Canada. She listens on her computer. Thank you again.

Hi Tony,
Thank you so much for playing the request for Bob‟s birthday, he was thrilled to bits.
I have told all my family and friend here in Australia about your station, and the

I shall be back in the UK end April having missed most of the bad weather.
I do hope you are all well also Jeannie.
Thanks again

I first heard your radio station whilst staying with some friends in Emsworth a couple

* Angel Radio is often praised by listeners for its thoughtfulness and for the
way they can simply phone up for a chat, as indicated by the following email –
Hi Tony
This morning we missed hearing Mildred around 12.30 and hoped all was well, so a
quick telephone chat to Martin and all was revealed. Where else on this planet
could a listener phone a radio station, let alone receive a friendly chat and answer? A
simple little comment but so relevant to the intimacy of this Station.
Very best wishes and continued success in this superb venture.

One or two of the programmes (religious music etc) but you need them as you have to

Not a lot really! More research by some of your presenters would be nice - the internet
makes this so easy and it adds to the enjoyment of a tune. I had to phone in about
"My Ain Folk" which was described as a plantation song - not many plantations in
Scotland! :-)
Does Angel Radio improve your life in any way? How?
Makes working at home and doing the housework enjoyable!

Thank you for your prompt reply to my e-mail the other day, I am pleased to report
that all appears to be well now although I completely lost one of your stations
yesterday. The main reason for this e-mail is to thank you for mentioning angel dance
bands, I had not come across it and it is a great find judging by the excellent quality of
sound; I have just listened to an hour of Glenn Miller and think you are to be
congratulated for the service you are providing, this is 'more up my street' . I have only
recently found your station due to a letter I read in the Daily Telegraph but am
spreading the word up here in what you people must think is the wilderness of
Cheshire and its environs, I've got some friends listening in the Lake District too. Good
luck with your endeavours.

How wonderful.
Just found you on car radio. Amazing and incredible music and presentation. My only
regret is when in Midhurst, the signal is down to just interference. Peak quality is
Chichester and that area. You are the best and I've heard so many oldies and some
I'd forgotten.
Unbelievable.
Thank you so very much.
Regards,Pete.
Greetings Tony.
Yesterday, I switched to the "Dance Bands" stream and to my delight and joy, there
was a programme featuring the music of Troise and his Mandoliers.
I recall that when I was a child, they performed frequently on BBC radio - particularly
"Music while you Work" and perhaps "Worker's Playtime".too....and I enjoyed their
music then, as I do now!
Many of Angel's are worth repeating and are rightly repeated. However, if there is
ever a list for programme worth repeating, then Troise deserves to be at the top of the
list, as the 'plinky-plonk' of the mandolins and banjos, together with the accordion are
a genre of their own, and timeless.
Please thank the presenter/compiler for this great listening hour.
Kind Regards
Ken in London

What do you particularly dislike about Angel Radio?
When it disappears off the air.
How would you improve Angel Radio?
Make the nothing past 1959 rule a bit less rigid and perhaps rolling. How about some
Pathe News excerpts? More organ music? These might already happen but I can only
listen morning, lunch and teatime on the wireless
Does Angel Radio improve your life in any way? How?
Yes I have learnt lots about old music and some local history. You can only get the
same sort of music infrequently on Radio 2 now. I've been listening since 2006 when I
started working in Havant
We first found your station by chance a few years ago when visiting a cousin at
Langstone and we thought it was fantastic. Every moment in the car we listened and
thought how great it would be if reception would allow us to listen up here. We even
phoned you and you offered to record a couple of programmes for us.
I know it may sound crackers but we never thought of listening on the internet until the
other day when there were shouts of delight in this house when we read the letters
page in The Daily Telegraph and read Tony Smith's letter!
So thanks Tony!! It will be a great pleasure to listen again.

Why do you listen to Angel Radio?
I enjoy speech based radio very much (I'm an avid radio 4 listener) and Angel radio
has some very interesting programmes.
What do you particularly like about Angel Radio?
The professionalism of the presenters, the reminiscences of your listeners, the star
biographies (which have encouraged me to explore film and music stars I previously
hadn't even heard of) The general variety of the programmes - it's astounding that this
is a voluntarily staffed, non-funded radio station - compared to "paid for" commercial
radio the output is superb.
What do you particularly dislike about Angel Radio?
The music is often not to my taste - I listen to a lot of rock and pop - but that said don't
change it! It's essential that there is a station which plays "older" music for your
listeners- I can hear modern music anywhere!
How would you improve Angel Radio?
Just carry on what you're doing, it's great. I would love there to be a similar radio
station in every town and city, why we don't have something similar in London I don't
know.
Does Angel Radio improve your life in any way? How?
Where do I start?? At 31 I'm probably one of your younger listeners but I have always
enjoyed the company of older people and love to hear such wonderful and interesting
memories of the 30s,40s & 50s. It's so refreshing to hear articulate presenters who
don't resort to smut and swearing. I think that senior citizens in Britain are generally
treated abysmally, almost as if people older than 50 have nothing to offer, when in so
many cases nothing could be further from the truth and it makes my blood boil! I'll get
off my soap box now!

Just love the music. Also was born near Portsmouth and sometimes hearing familiar

Very clear reception. Like the different voices and accents of announcers. Like
especially the pleasant surprise when one hears a piece of music or song one had

A listener pointed out the problem of stereotype-linking older people and older music.
Good Evening,
This is just a quick missive before I head off home but thought I would pass on a
comment from some of my friends before I go. I work in Havant and having just got a
small cheap radio found to my great pleasure that I can receive your broadcasts. I
have subsequently pointed a few friends, who have an interest predominantly in swing
and dance band music of the 20's through to the 40's, at your website and they
commented on how its a shame that stations like yours generally market yourselves
50
as being for the elderly. We are all members of this club
http://www.newsheridanclub.co.uk/ and the age of the membership ranges from about
16 to 70. There are a large number of people who like to listen to this kind of
music who have quite a way to go before retirement and it just seems a shame that
you are so willing to pigeonhole your listeners.
Anyway keep up the good work!

Does Angel Radio improve your life in any way? How?
Yes, most emphatically; apart from the joys (and sadness) from visiting memory lane,

At times we have been able to bring together people on both sides of the world.
Hi Vic and Jean
Have a lovely Christmas we are here in the sun and in our pool weather perfect 25c

Computer is going for repair tonight so won't be able to listen to the show, wondered if
you can do a request for me for Val & Bob in Torquay and all of the folk listening
in from "The Oaks" club in Rowlands Castle also to yourselves for having such a
wonderful show we can tune into from so far away. Les Paul and the world is waiting

Look forward to next week when we can tune in again.

I came across your wonderful Radio station on my iPod. It really is one of the best

is remarkable. It says on your blog "tell all your friends" only one problem none of my

Significant achievements
In October 2009 we were contacted by BBC World Service who were producing a
live, phone-in programme about ageing. The BBC asked if Angel Radio could provide
one of our team to co-host the programme. We felt it was a great honour to be asked,
and provided our „Let‟s Be Sentimental‟ presenter, Ian Horner. The programme was
indeed aired live and the response was very good.
The power of radio, and the large number of people listening to Angel Radio was
proven on 1st April when Angel Radio ran a fake April fool news item stating Havant
Borough Council were raising the weekly wage of refuse collectors to £1,000 a week
and, in an effort to save money, would only be collecting refuse once every 3 weeks.
The item was aired at 8.55am and at 9.20am Angel Radio‟s Manager received a
telephone call from the Head of Havant Borough Council saying that they had been
inundated with complaints . . . and several requests for application forms for the post
of refuse collector.
During this period Angel Radio was nominated for an award run by the Community
Channel. They were running a competition to find a groundbreaking small project
that makes a BIG difference in its local community, is innovative and inspiring and
makes a positive and proven impact on the local community or society at large.
Although we did not win the award, the organisers and judges wrote to us to say how
very impressed they were with our project and gave us „Highly Commended‟.
During this period Angel Radio was awarded The Queen‟s Award for Voluntary
Service, the equivalent of an MBE for the radio station.
Four members of the Angel Radio team attended the Buckingham Palace Garden
Party. These being the three longest serving members of the Angel team and the
partner of one of those attending.
The Buckingham Palace Garden Party visitors before setting off for London
56
In September Havant Borough Council held a Civic Reception for the Angel team and
many listeners. The event was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Dame
Mary Fagan DVCO, Vice-Admiral Sir Roy Newman, and the Mayor of Havant. As
well as raising the self esteem of Angel Radio‟s staff and listeners, the award has
proved very newsworthy locally as Angel Radio was the only recipient in the whole
county of Hampshire. While news reports certainly helped to publicise our radio
station, they also brought in the usual glut of letters and telephone calls from older
people asking “Why can‟t I hear you?” While it has always been frustrating and
upsetting to inform people that they can‟t hear a radio station ideally suited to them
merely because they live in the wrong geographical area, this time it was additionally
upsetting because a few contacts came from older people in Portsmouth and
Gosport, some of whom had been listeners to our first RSLs and had been the first
listeners to write to the Radio Authority requesting a full-time licence for Angel.
The news of our award also brought responses from unexpected sources, including
our landlord – I am delighted to learn of this award, we salute and support you.
Yours Sincerely,
Martin Reifer

STAFF PROBLEMS
* Following last year‟s problem with several members of staff we had hoped the
problems were behind us. Unfortunately the two staff members who came close to
being suspended last year had to be dismissed this year.
**To remind readers of this year‟s report what was written in last year‟s report –
“2 team members who have come close to being suspended are TC and MP. They
are presenter and technician of a series of religious programmes. The technician,
MP, is a know-it-all type, who is un-trainable. He persists in misusing expensive
equipment, and has on several occasions twisted and stretched a very expensive
and sensitive microphone almost to destruction point. The presenter TC has
destroyed many hours of work by fiddling with the playout system despite a sign that
says „Do not under any circumstances touch this computer‟. After 2 verbal and 3
written warnings TC & MP appear to have taken on board an understanding of the
problems and have thus avoided suspension.”
This year MP continued to be a very bad studio engineer and un-trainable because of
his attitude. He was seen on several occasions by the Station Manager gazing at the
studio wall while the music being aired was over-modulated to distortion and the
voice of the presenter (TC) could barely be heard. On the occasion which brought
instant dismissal, TC was presenting a religious programme which included a prayer
time. During the prayer TC announced that Angel Radio was having a collection,
and that Angel Radio was holding a tabletop sale, and that all unwanted items
for the sale should be dropped off at the Angel Radio studio, and that all
proceeds would be shared equally with the Salvation Army. All of this was said
without any consultation whatsoever with any of the Management team. When asked
why he had made the announcements TC said “God told me to”. TC was told that
this was totally unacceptable and, if he wished to continue his programmes Angel
Radio would supply a knowledgeable producer to steer the show in the right direction
(part of the job that MP should have been doing). TC refused to work with a
producer. Both TC and his engineer MP were dismissed.
* The third and fourth people to leave under unhappy circumstances this period
were our Sunday evening request show presenter (BS) and his telephonist (NW).
Following a series of weekly checks on the listener statistics on the internet it was
noted that there was a regular, uncharacteristic fall in listeners within a few minutes
of the beginning of BS‟s programme each week. The statistic check, although
undertaken regularly, was only previously used to gain a general understanding of
the trends of internet listeners. It needs to be studied in closer detail to show
problems with individual programmes. The detailed check was undertaken following
several, not so much „complaints‟ as barbed comments and derogatory remarks
about the programme from FM listeners. It was decided to listen to the logs of 3 of
BS‟s Sunday request programmes, chosen at random, and note the contents. It was
very quickly obvious that the presentation was atrocious, many of the “requests” were
invented, and many of the programmes contained long periods of records played
back-to-back. A CD was made containing examples of each of the aforementioned
problems and given to BS together with a letter asking how he (BS) felt Angel Radio
could assist him to bring his programme up to scratch. BS replied with an email
accusing the Station Manager of faking the CD and not being grateful to him for
donating his time. BS was dismissed. His receptionist, NW, being a close friend, also
58
decided to leave. It is felt that the blame for such a low quality programme being
aired on Angel Radio should rest with the Management Team who, because the
programme was tucked away in a late-night Sunday slot, did not carry out sufficient
checks on the content. The Sunday evening request show has now been moved to
an earlier time, with a trusted presenter and a member of the Management Team
monitoring the output, while the old slot is now airing a series of high quality jazz
programmes.
COVERAGE
For the past 8 years we have been troubled with a poor coverage of large parts of the
Borough. This was really brought home to us when one of our listeners was looking
for a nursing home which could receive Angel Radio. We went into various nursing
homes with a good quality, sensitive, selective receiver and found the signal was
often much worse than we had previously suspected. There are two ideal
transmission sites which would give good coverage if our transmission antenna was
placed on either site. We wrote to both and were refused by both.
Guinness Hermitage, the owners of a tower block replied “The Association applauds
your success and continued services. The Association notes your request for an
aerial but I regret I am unable to agree to this. The Hermitage Housing Board has
made a policy decision some time ago, not to permit any further aerials on top of its
multi-storey blocks in West Leigh”.
Spire BUPA Hospital replied “I‟m afraid I am unable to offer space for your radio
transmitter on the Spire site. This is due to extensive building work and the nature of
our facilities”.
LET DOWN BY EVENT ORGANISERS
Angel Radio was asked if we would like to be included as an attraction at the
Hampshire Water Festival on Saturday 25 July and Sunday 26 July 2009. We gave
an enthusiastic positive response and informed listeners that we would like to be
included. No further information from the organisers was forthcoming until the
morning of the first day of the event, when the organiser telephoned to ask if we
wanted to be included as an attraction, by which time it was far too late for us to
organise a team. We made a complaint and were told we would definitely be included
in 2010. We have heard no more.
LISTENER PROBLEM
This report period Angel Radio had to take the extreme step of using BT‟s Choose to
Refuse number to temporarily block calls from a listener.
The listener, known as Ron from Southsea, has been a constant thorn in the side of
Angel Radio since 1999. Ron has in the past made official complaints, about Angel
Radio, to the Radio Authority, the Arch-Bishop of Canterbury, President Clinton,
numerous MPs, and other local media. Ron‟s complaints have never been
„constructive criticism‟, which would help us to create the radio station that the
majority of listeners enjoy, rather they are a daily winge about subjects of absolutely
no importance. As an instance, Ron used to phone in with a list of six requests for a
single show. We used to try to fit in all of his request, but on one occasion we only
managed to play 3 of his records. This resulted in complaints being sent off to all
manner of officials. More recently Ron has been sabotaging request programmes by
phoning in time after time asking for the same couple of records that he knows we
haven‟t got in our library. The final straw, which led to the decision to bar his
telephone number, was when he held the request show receptionist on the line for 15
minutes getting her to find the exact obscure recording that he wanted to hear. It was
explained that his call was blocking the line and other callers couldn‟t get through, but
he insisted that the receptionist find the recording, with threats of complaining to
Ofcom and his MP. Eventually the exact recording was found and played. Ron then
59
phoned back and blocked the line again complaining that the version we played
wasn‟t long enough. Although this may appear to be a petty reason to bar his
number, what must be remembered is that our receptionists have to endure this
behaviour from Ron almost every day and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It should
also be noted that we only put call barring on his mobile phone, not his land-line. The
bar was in place for one month and then removed.

Audience research
Please provide a summary of any audience research/ data you have collected during the
year.
Data has been collected from a variety of sources. The highest number of inputs
came via email. These have been divided into „local‟ and „distant‟ listeners. A
selection of emails can be seen within this report.
The next highest inputs have come from two questionnaires on our website.
At our meetings and coffee mornings we take notes of comments and questions.
This report period we have not had our usual day of listener feedback, although we
have continued to enter relevant comments in our „comments book‟
Research in the form of 50 street interviews was carried out to find older people who
do not listen to Angel Radio to ascertain why they don‟t listen, what they listen to
instead, and what they would change about Angel Radio which would persuade them
to listen.
Over all listeners are very satisfied with the service provided.
An equal amount of listeners said “less speech” as those that said “more speech”.
Only 4% of local listeners want to change Angel Radio.
The main area of discontent for distant listeners is lack of FM or DAB geographical
coverage area.
There has been an increase (comments book) in people asking for records from
1960s to be played.
60% of listeners said “Yes” to „Does Angel Radio improve your health?‟
10% of non listeners didn‟t like the idea of radio for older people.
12% of non listeners didn‟t know where to hear Angel Radio.
18% of non listeners said they would give Angel Radio a try.
26% of non listeners were happy with their current station.
26% of non listeners didn‟t listen to any radio station and would not listen in future.
50% of non listeners had not heard of Angel Radio.
In most cases where a listener has suggested a subject for a programme or has had
a query about a programme we have been able to provide for their needs. Requests
actioned include –
More steam-powered automatic organs - We produced a series of 6 programmes
More vintage British comedy - We have increased our comedy output.
More Brenda Lee - Documentary produced
More „out and about‟ programmes - We have produced a series of programmes from
around the Borough, including museum visits, classic vehicle shows, fayres and
shops.
Easier to read programme details - Our website now carries daily downloads
Access to missed episodes of serials - We have created a 2nd chance page on our
website which allows missed episodes to be heard again, but not downloaded.
Repeats of favourite programmes – On several occasions listeners have asked for
repeats of shows. Where practical we have done this, usually using a gap created by
illness or holiday.
Dear Tony,
Sorry for troubling you over this.
On Saturday night (19th Sep) it seemed that Angel Radio (Havant) was having
technical problems with its Internet stream. As a result, myself, Mum and Dad were
all very disappointed not to hear the next Paul Temple 'Conrad Case' instalment
(Episode 5). Especially so, as we've been following each edition.

So I'm writing to ask whether you could pleeeeeease(!) consider repeating that
episode this Saturday coming? - like you did back in the summer (with 'The Spencer
Affair' - and indeed other Angel programmes) when there had been technical probs
the previous weekend.
I don't suppose it's done us any good writing! - but unless you ask, you don't find out!
Yours.....in hope!!
Bruce (in Southampton) - and Mum & Dad!
We were asked for more Charlie Kunz and produced a 2-hour documentary.
My husband David, and I have only recently discovered Angel Radio and are now
keen fans of the programme. What a great idea you had! The music is just right and
the quiet chat between records is much appreciated.
May we ask that you play some Charlie Kunz during any of the morning sessions if
possible please.
Keep up the good work, your company seems to be a lifeline to some older people
living alone.
Thank you again.
Joan and David Ricketts, Seaview, I.O.W.
Following our Charlie Kunz programme we received the following reply.
Hallo Tony
Thank you for Charlie Kunz this morning, it was great.
We listen to Angel Radio in Havant on 101.1 fm but I am trying to use the internet as
well (I am just mastering it so that I can show David). The program I used was
angelradio.moonfruit.co.uk.
Thank you again for your prompt reply to our request and continue to air your
delightful programmes.
Regards, Joan and David Ricketts
