The Sperry Ranch welcomes you to our 12th Annual Performance and Production Sale. We
have something for everyone at this sale, so come prepared to find what you’re looking for. We
are selling what we think is an outstanding set of ranch-bred weanlings and performance ranch
horses. All these horses are bred to perform whether you need something to rodeo on, to use on
a daily basis on the ranch or enjoy for trail riding, ranch horse competitions, team penning or
pleasure riding.
Our weanlings are out of the stallions featured on pages 2 – 4. They come from lines including
Docs Oak, Play Gun, Young Gun and Paddys Irish Whiskey. The other foals offered in the sale
come from Robert’s Aunt Ginger and Uncle Gary DeCock. They are out of Millie N Docs Oak
and Badlands Oak Bush. We are partners with DeCocks on this home-raised stallion. We are
also offering foals from Enoch and Dixie Schaffer, Robert’s
cousin, that are out of Romeo White Feathers. Our goal in
selecting our stallions and mares is to produce horses that
can perform in any situation to be the “using kind.”

The foals have been handled, halter broke and dewormed.
Our performance horses have all been used on our ranch or on our neighbors’ ranches to drag calves to the fire
during branding, gather mares for breeding or gather calves in the fall for shipping. These horses have been ridden
outside in the Badlands as well as in the arena. All are sound and fully guaranteed. We like to say, “Every one the
using kind,” because we do use them every day. Come and see for yourself!

Again this year, we have invited consignors to add to our sale. We have hand picked the horses and feel they will be an asset to our sale program.
We’ve tried to put together a sale of horses combining color, conformation, cow sense, speed and performance. These horses will prove themselves over
and over again for you, whether you are working on the ranch or bringing home the trophy. We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and meeting new ones on sale day. Come prepared to have some fun and look at some horses.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
1. The highest bidder is to be the buyer. If a dispute shall arise between two bidders, sole authority to settle the dispute is the auctioneer’s as he sees fit and his decision shall be
final. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids. The seller has the right to the last bid.
2. Terms of the sale are cash. Personal checks are considered cash. Foreign buyers must pay in U.S. currency.
3. Absentee and phone bids are welcome. We will not be held responsible for bad or broken connections if you decide to bid by phone. You may fill out the absentee sheet (Bidder
Information, page 2) and mail back to Sperry Quarter Horses before sale day.
4. It is highly recommended that buyers fully examine the horses that interest them. All sales are absolute and final. If a problem shall arise there will be no refunds, only a credit
towards next year’s sale. All horses are guaranteed for soundness, not compatibility
and, if for some reason, you need to return the horse, you have until Tuesday,
August 11, to return the horse to the ranch. This soundness guarantee will apply
only to horses with problems existing prior to sale time and not to problems caused
after the sale by the buyer’s hauling or use of the horse. High Plains Veterinary
Clinic will be the only veterinarian that can make soundness decisions in order to
obtain credit.
5. All registration papers will be held by Sperry Quarter Horses until the buyer’s check
is cleared through the bank. At that time, Sperry Quarter Horses will mail the AQHA
papers and transfers to the new owners.
6. If buyer decides not to take the horse on sale day, it is their responsibility to insure
the horse and sign a waiver before it will return to the Sperry Ranch. (Insurance will
be available by Steiger Insurance, 605-845-7923.)
7. All horses will be Coggins tested and brand inspected. Health papers will be written
to those horses leaving the state and paid for by the buyers. Dr. J.J. Hovde will be
the veterinary on hand on sale day to issue healths.
8. Every effort has been made to insure accuracy of the catalog, but sellers assume no
responsibility for errors or omissions. Announced changes in catalog sale day take
precedence over printed material in this catalog.
9. We have done our best to list the horses’ colors accurately but there are no color
guarantees and color may need to be determined by the buyer on sale day.
10. All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk. Sperry Quarter Horses and
the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation assume no liability, legal or otherwise,
for any accidents as a result of attending this sale.
11. Anyone is welcome to visit the ranch prior to Thursday before the sale
to ride the horses. The horses will not be available to ride Thursday
through Sunday the week of the sale.
12. There will be no load-outs until the sale is completely finished.

A blood bay stallion that can run, stop and turn a cow. He has been ranched on in the Badlands and
can head and heel. His sire, Doc’s Oak, is an earner of $75,658 and is an NCHA Hall of Famer. Doc’s
Oak split fourth in the NCHA Open Futurity and also was a finalist in the Snaffle Bit Futurity. EquiStat
#7 All-Time Leading Cutting Sire, siring the earners of over $9,500,000 and an NRHA All-Time
Leading Sire. In March 2006, Robert and Oak debuted at Minot’s North Dakota Horsefest and won the
pro-open ranch horse competition! Oakie has been ridden at the USTRC Finals in Oklahoma City in the
heeling. We are excited to have D & S Cattle Co., Hysham, Mont., as partners on Oakie.

We are excited to have this guy in our breeding program. We are roping on him so we know his
progeny will be as agile and cowy. He’s a good-moving horse and very willing to please.
Playgun – who has a stud fee of $6,000 – earned $183,451. He is sixth on the list of Top Sires of
Cutting and Reining Money Earners with a total of $5,312,547 won. He is also a Leading Reined
Cowhorse Sire. Jay Moss is the dam of offspring earning $821,122. She is the dam of Nurse Rey,
Dual Rey and High Brows Nurse. Miss Silver Pistol earned $512,755, NCHA Futurity Non-Pro
Champion, Gold and Silver Open Champion, and dam of offspring with earning over $320,000.
BROOD MARES
You will notice that the foals off the ranch all have three names. The first name of each is “Badlands,” which over the
years, we hope you come to recognize as a Sperry Ranch signature.
The second name represents the stallions’ bloodlines so you will be able to quickly identify your foal’s background:
“Oak” for Millie N Docs Oak, “Gun” for Gun Too and “Gringo” for Gringo Pistolero.
The last names come from a system that has been in the family for over 50 years. Marcia’s mother, Claribel, began
naming her foals by the alphabet back then so she could remember what year they were born. The first foals she
named were born back in 1956 and had names starting with an “A.”
We’ve used Claribel’s method over the years and we are now working on an “G” year. That’s why all our foals this year
have a third name that begins with an “G.” Over the years we hope this system will enable you to be able to very
quickly tell anyone who raised your foal, its background and the year it was born. We hope you can put our naming
system to good use.

This is a gelding we have held back because we have just so enjoyed him. Babyface
is a good-sized horse that stands almost 15.1 HH and has flawless conformation.
He’s the horse that you can go and catch out in the pasture and saddle every time
with ease. We’ve nicknamed him “Happy Go Lucky.” We have had so much success
with the Playgun-bred horses and this one is no different. He’s a very docile, talented
athlete that lopes nice collected circles, knows his leads and has a lead change. He neck reins and
moves all his body parts with leg pressure, and drags his tail every time he stops. He is a great
candidate for the AQHA ranch versatility classes and ranch horse competitions. A fancy, fancy head &
heel horse with score, run, really rates, and has the coolest move across the pen making it so easy to
face. Heeling on him he makes the corner every time, lets you see feet, stops square and drags his tail
like a wormy dog! Would make an all-around horse for the high school rodeos, have stepped off on
him and breakawayed. He is safe to ride bareback in a halter and has carried flags. A safe ranch and
trail gelding, does not mother up and is point and go. Crosses water, bridges and logs with ease. He is

him. You can heel off of him – he’ll put you right there and let you rope both live cattle

awhile now. He is very well-mannered horse to be around and twice as broke. He

King is that horse that just takes your breath away the moment he’s in sight. He’s a
fancy black gelding with just enough chrome, and bred to be so talented. An athlete,
he can gather himself up and go and whoa in two breaths. Hauled as a heading horse,
he scores flat footed, breaks flat and won’t get out ran. He rates, handles cattle and can
face with the best of them. A 2D barrel horse, will run in the 1D with a push-style rider,
and has won futurity money. This horse is one you can haul to the rodeos with a one-horse trailer. Has
a soft lope and a lead change. Will move all his body parts off leg pressure, can stop for a big horse
and back readily. Has been used extensively on the ranch to gather, sort and doctor. He will ride out
alone and not mother up to another horse. On the trails he will cross water, bridges and logs with ease,
and has used a slicker. He has carried a flag at a 4th of July parade and didn’t seem to bother him. He’s

I have owned Cody for five years. He is fun to track and rope from in the arena. He won a jackpot for
me in working cowhorse competition. Last summer we competed in Cowboy Mounted Shooting and
he does very well tolerating gunfire. My farrier said he has good feet and is easy to trim and shoe.
Cody went to NDSU last year as part of their equine program. He was used for reining competitions
at college equine events. I must sell him, though, according to my doctor, who recently repaired my
aging and somewhat abused body (veterinarian, rancher).

Colonel is the cutest little 14.3 HH, stout-made sorrel gelding you can find. He is
quiet and easy to get along with, will walk up and catch you in the pasture. A very accomplished horse for his age – an NCHA money winner, won the 2015 15K AM in the
White River Association, also 4th in the 50K AM in Pleasant Plains. He’s a very fancy
heel horse, that can score, run, rate and he stops square and is strong from the horn.
He has placed at several ranch horse competitions and he is the goods! Will be hauled to ropings
and cuttings up until the sale. Rides bridleless and bareback, crosses water, bridges, and logs. Used

He is willing to please and has the potential to be an all-around rodeo/performance
horse. He is an excellent ranch horse. Boone is very athletic and learns quickly. He
is a beautiful red dun with blonde mane and tail. This guy is a good calf and heel
prospect and bred to be the best and has a great start.

The family of Kyle “Bud” Sperry Jr. established a memorial
scholarship in Bud’s honor. The Bud Sperry “Old Cowboy”
Memorial Scholarship awarded nine $500 individual scholarships to members of the North Dakota High School Rodeo
Association (NDHSRA) in June 2015.
Bud loved rodeo, whether it was competing or supporting his
boys. He was always there to lend a helping hand or advice to
anyone concerning rodeo, horses or anything else it may be.
Bud watched his sons, Russell and Robert, and many other
neighboring kids compete in high school and national high
school rodeos, then on to college rodeos throughout their
careers. He knew of the importance of a college education and
the expenses that come with it.
The past five years, family, friends, neighbors and horse buyers
gathered in August at the Sperry Quarter Horse Sale in Medora, N.D., where they raised funds for the memorial scholarship. We have added “Old Cowboy” to the name as a tribute to
Bud’s era and his friends.
This year, the Sperry family awarded two of the nine scholarships in memory of Kelby Indergard (17), Sidney, Mont., whose
life was unexpectedly cut short on Jan. 12, 2013. Kelby was an
active member of the NDHSRA and attended the 2012 High
School National Rodeo Finals in team roping with his partner,
Rory Irwin. He also qualified for “Team Cinch” in 2012-13 by
being a standout in the
state of North Dakota in
both academics and in
the rodeo arena. One of
Kelby’s goals was to earn a
Bud Sperry “Old Cowboy”
Memorial Scholarship.
The memorial scholarships
will be awarded annually
to three boys and three
girls, and three to either.
The qualifications for the
Sperry Scholarship are: a
graduating senior who is a
member on the NDHSRA

in good standing. Member
must have qualified to the ND State High School Finals at least
once in their high school career. Those who have not qualified
for state by their senior year, and are close to being in the top
24 should apply. Applicant should have a 2.00 GPA or better
and have plans to attend an accredited university, junior college
or trade school the immediate fall semester after high school
graduation.
