On July 27th, Council Member
J nbvimmy Van Bramer was joined
by over 50 Sunnyside residents to
demand the Metropolitan Transit
Authority lower the level of earpiercing construction at the East
Side Access Project’s construction
site in the neighborhood. Residents
of Sunnyside are suffering from
on-going and deafening noise pollution caused by the East Side Access Project and also claim industrial drilling is causing structural
damage to their historic properties
and residences. “This is not a game,”
said Van Bramer. “The MTA is in
direct violation of the rules and
guidelines that they are legally ob-
ligated to work under. We should
not have to suffer as a result of earsplitting construction that is occurring on the weekends and after hours
in the dead of night. The MTA
cannot ask Sunnysiders to ‘just suck
it up’ until 2019 when this project is
slated to be completed.

Commemorating A Life Taken Too Soon
On July 29th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer was joined by
Queens DOT Commissioner Dalila Hall, Gail Mellow, President of
LaGuardia Community College, Paul Steely White, Executive Director of
Transportation Alternatives, as well as students and faculty from the
various local colleges and high schools to announce the installation of
traffic safety improvements along Thomson Avenue.

On Monday July 29th. Sidetracks Restaurant was the hosts a Business
Card Exchange held by the Sunnyside and Queens Chambers of Commerce.
It is always a sign of success when Lily Gavin from the Sunnyside Chamber
and Sophia Ganosis from the Queens Chamber get together. In addition, the
host of the evening, Sidetracks own Bernard Reilly, saw to it that everything
from the service and food and down to the smallest detail went off without
a hitch along with fine wine supplied in thanks to Lowery Liquors.

Free Training Course For
Home-Improvement
Contractors Seeking License
The Queens Economic Development Corporation is ready to offer its
highly successful Home Improvement Contractor Training course for free
in Far Rockaway in August, thanks to the Small Business Administration
and The Pinkerton Foundation, through the Queens Library Foundation.
QEDC will provide an instructor who has worked with many small
construction businesses to lead workshops that prepare contractors to
pass the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs licensing exam. There
is a limit of 25 people per workshop, and classes will be offered on Aug.
17, 18 and 25 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Queens Library.
This HICT program is aimed at those who were affected by October
2012’s Superstorm Sandy; who are working as home improvement
contractors without a license; or who have a serious desire to start a
contracting business. Due to generous funding provided by the Small
Business Administration and The Pinkerton Foundation through the
Queens Library Foundation, the workshop sessions — which usually
cost $200 each — will be free. Additionally, qualified graduates will be
reimbursed up to $200 of the $475 licensing fee that each aspiring
contractor must pay to DCA. The lessons will be accompanied by oneon-one business advisory services, such as consultations on permits and
licensing, business development, procurement and access to capital.

On Saturday, July 27th, Council Member Daniel Dromm (D- Elmhurst, Jackson Heights) unveiled a
street sign co-naming 77th Street and Broadway in Elmhurst “Guillermo Vasquez Corner”. Mr. Vasquez
was a prominent HIV/AIDS activist in the LGBT and Colombian communities in Queens until his death
from AIDS related complications in 1996 at the age of 42. The co-naming event was co-sponsored by the
Latin American Cultural Center of Queens.
Former Intern Of Congressman
Gets Congressional Job
Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of
the House Democratic Caucus, congratulated Crystal Price on
her new job as a staff assistant for Congressman Tim Ryan
(OH-13). Born and raised in New York, Crystal is the daughter
of Daniel and Terri Price.
Crystal lived in both Queens and Bronx growing up. When
Crystal entered high school, she decided to pursue her passion
for music and attend Talent Unlimited High School in Manhattan for their Vocal Music and Musical Theatre Program. After
graduating from Talent Unlimited, Crystal changed tracks and
attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice majoring in
Political Science. Crystal took a break from school to work on
the congressional campaign for Brad Schneider in Chicago,
Illinois during the 2012 election cycle. Once the campaign was
over, she returned to New York and interned in Congressman
Crowley’s Bronx office before moving to Washington D.C. to

Pigeon Mitigation Systems
Installed Along 7 Train Line
On July 30th, Council Member Jimmy
Van Bramer was joined by residents from
Sunnyside and Woodside, local business
owners and representatives from the
Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement
District to announce the installation of stateof-the-art pigeon mitigation systems along
the 7 train stops of 46th Street-Bliss, 52nd
Street – Lincoln Avenue, and 61st Street –
Woodside. For decades New Yorkers along
the 7 Line have been plagued by pigeons
pooping on them from overhead as they ride
to and from their destinations daily.
“Today we have officially kicked off our war on pigeon poop within the 26th District,”
said Council Member Van Bramer. “Pigeon poop isn’t a joke. It is something that is terribly
disgusting. It makes our neighborhood look unattractive and it is also a health hazard. The
process of installing state-of-the-art pigeon mitigation systems is well underway and once
fully implemented will help deter droppings from hitting commuters who use these train
stations every single day.”
The overwhelming mess created by pigeons has presented health hazards to many local
residents as well as caused the station entrances and surrounding areas to look unsightly due
to the amount of droppings. Council Member Van Bramer has allocated $250,000 in
funding to install deterrent systems in response to local concerns and help begin the process
of beautifying the areas around these 7 train stations.
These new systems will attack the pigeon “poop” problem with a 3-pronged approach:

Add thin wiring and netting in surrounding areas around station entrances
·
Install nylon spikes and angled edges to ledges
·
Install ultrasonic devices, which emit hawk “aggressive” sounds to deter. These
systems can be set to emit either or both sounds of predatory birds, pigeon distress calls and
sonar waves inaudible to human ears
“On behalf of Sunnyside’s local businesses and property owners, I want to thank
Council Member Van Bramer for his leadership to transform these areas under the elevated
7 train into inviting spaces for pedestrians,” said Rachel Thieme, Executive Director of
Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District. “I believe that making these areas into
intentional public spaces will contribute so much to the livability of this neighborhood and
will only enhance the local business environment. Sunnyside Shines is pleased to work with
Council Member Van Bramer on a variety of initiatives that beautify the Sunnyside
neighborhood. Deterring pigeons from these areas will make a huge impact on the
cleanliness of the spaces under the train, and will be a huge step forward to transform these
spaces into true public places for pedestrians.”

A Life Taken
Too Soon
Several Woodside residents and
who Mr. Rispoli mentored performed several songs at the memorial street co-naming ceremony
which took place at John Downing
Square, one of Lou’s favorite neighborhood spots, located at the intersection of 51st Street and 43rd Avenue in Woodside.
Family members and neighbors also shared fond memories of
Mr. Rispoli about his work in the
community and advocacy within
the LGBT community.
Mr. Rispoli was a gay rights
activist and an avid supporter of
music and the arts who was killed
in the same community where he
lived for over 30 years. Mr. Rispoli,
also enjoyed being a mentor to
young musicians throughout New
York City while serving as an administrator at the Greenwich House
Music School, cooked and cared
for friends with AIDS and HIV as
a volunteer with the Gay Men’s
Health Crisis and encouraged
people in their careers in the arts.
Before his life was taken away Mr.
Rispoli celebrated a year of legal
marriage with his partner of over
31 years. It has been nearly a since
Lou’s death and there are still several suspects on the loose and
wanted in connection with the
murder of Lou. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is

“By working with the DOT we
were able to install concrete safety
improvements which are already
taking effect and being implemented here on Thomson Avenue
in Long Island City,” said Van
Bramer. “No New Yorker should
feel their life is in jeopardy when
they are walking along the sidewalks of our City streets. I want to
thank DOT for listening to our
recommendations and taking the
necessary steps toward making
Thomson Avenue safer for the tens
of thousands of students, local residents and motorists who use this
busy corridor every single day.”
In March, 16-year-old Applied
Communications High School student, Tenzin Drudak, was killed
when a vehicle heading eastbound
along Thomson Avenue jumped the
curb and struck him. Prior to the
installation of safety improvements
there was a significant gap between
pedestrian barriers that were in place
at northeast corner of the intersection at Thomson and Skillman Avenues which allowed the vehicle to
pedestrians gain access to the curb
and strike the young teenager down.
Immediately following the incident CM Van Bramer met with
DOT and began working with the
agency to reevaluate the hazardous
traffic conditions along Thomson
Avenue and begin discussing
implementing safety improvements. At the press conference Van

The residents of Sunnyside deserve better. I will continue to fight
to ensure that the MTA abides by
the rules and regulations they are
supposed to follow in order to maintain the quality of life we once had
before this construction began.”
Several weeks ago, the MTA
did not give local residents 24hours’ notice of construction and
also conducted drilling at 1, 2 and 3
in the morning. After prolonged
periods of drilling and excessive
noise pollution plaguing the neighborhood local families and seniors
contacted the Council Member’s
office to express their concerns.

Hall highlighted recently implemented safety treatments designed
to make the street safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
“The safety measures implemented on 30th Street between
Skillman Avenue and Thomson
Avenue are first steps towards addressing safety concerns around the
vicinity of LaGuardia Community
College. Council Member Van
Bramer was truly a leader and advocate in ensuring that these first
steps are being implemented. The
College looks forward to continue
working closely with the NYC Department of Transportation, local
community leaders, and our traffic
consultants in finding the best safety
measures for our campus community,” said Gail O. Mellow
The project, which was requested and supported by Cm Van
Bramer and LaGuardia Community College, included short-term
improvements implemented in
April such as signal re-timings in
the area, the installation of pedestrian countdown signals at
Thomson and Skillman avenues,
30th St., 30th Pl., 31st St. and 31st
Place and additional signs and upgraded markings at Thomson Avenue and Van Dam Street.
To expand pedestrian safety
benefits, the agency redesigned
Thomson and Skillman avenues
by closing the slip ramp and implementing an eastbound left-turn ban
from Thomson Avenue to Skillman
Avenue. Granite blocks, plastic
bollards and six planters maintained by the college now delineate the 550 square feet of newly
dedicated pedestrian space, which
better accommodates the heavy
foot traffic seen at this intersec-
tion. To protect the high volumes
of student pedestrians crossing 30th
Street, the agency also installed
signage and plastic bollards to restrict left turns from westbound
Thomson Avenue to southbound
30th Street. To further protect the
pedestrians crossing 30th Street,
plastic bollards also have been
added to discourage the dangerous
and illegal “Z” turns that vehicles
had been observed making from
southbound Skillman Avenue to
southbound 30th Street.
“We applaud Council Member
Van Bramer and the Department
of Transportation for making
Thomson Avenue safer. In March
our city lost a young man walking
to school at the hands of a speeding
driver. This weekend at least three
other New Yorkers were walking
and lost their lives in traffic crashes.
Unfortunately, these crashes are
not random; fortunately, they are

spoke about a recent incident when
families and children were evacuated from the buildings pool because of violent vibrations beneath
the foundation. Residents feared the
foundation beneath the pool would
eventually crack and cause a lifethreatening situation to swimmers.
Sunnyside residents who live
across the street from the construction site also claim that as a result
of vibrations caused by pile-drivers and industrial drilling their residences are experiencing fractures
to their walls and ceilings.
After meeting with the MTA,
Van Bramer requested that sound
monitors be placed around the
neighborhood to ensure work is
within permissible City guidelines
for noise produced at construction
sites. The MTA complied and con-
ducted Street Noise Monitoring
Test. Before the test was undertaken the MTA stated that the noise
produced at the site complies with
City guidelines for construction.
However a recent noise report
provided to Van Bramer’s office
by the MTA identified several instances, which occurred just last
week, when noise levels exceeded
over 100 decibels, which are well
over the approved guidelines. According to the results of the Street
Noise Monitoring report, noise levels exceeded guidelines over 15
times between 7:30am and 6:18pm
on July 13th.
The East Side Access Project
is the largest transportation project
currently under construction in the
country. The project is scheduled
to be completed by 2019.

August 2nd: “The Tempest” at 8 p.m.
(Hip to Hip Theatre Company, led by Sunnysiders Jason and Joy Marrt)
August 9th: “Love’s Labor’s Lost” at 8 p.m.
Both performances are free and open to the public.
New this year: Hip to Hip will present a 30-minute program for children, “Kids & the Classics,” at
7:30, ahead of the performances at 8. The program will consist of theater games and a fun
introduction to the plays.
Performances will run about 1 hour, 30 minutes, without intermission. We will have wine & beer,
soda, water and light snacks for sale. Bring your own blankets or chairs to sit on, as the
performances will be on the lawn.

Summer Strolls Kicks Off
The Children’s Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, July 27, was a successful kick-off to
the Sunnyside Summer Strolls event series. Held under the Sunnyside Arch on 46th Street
between Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue, the Children’s Arts and Crafts Fair
drew more than 500 children for a fun-filled day of arts, crafts, face painting and music.
Organized by the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District, the Children’s Arts
and Crafts Fair featured free tables of craft activities in the street. This year’s event also
featured crafts and giveaways by some of Sunnyside’s small businesses, including South
Pole, Bing’s Hallmark, Pink Icing Bake Shop, TD Bank, Dime Bank, the Sunnyside Ballet
Studio and the soon-to-open 4Squared Flavors.
In addition to crafts, children were entertained by two performances by Tyrone Barnett
of the Music for Aardvarks class. Music for Aardvarks is a music class for babies and
toddlers based out of the Sunnyside Ballet Studio.
The next two events in the Sunnyside Summer Strolls series take place on August 3 and
August 10. August 3rd is the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert and August 10th is
a day of Arts and Performance. All events take place on 46th Street between Queens
Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue. The event series a part of Weekend Walks, an initiative
of the New York City Department of Transportation, which creates temporary pedestrian
streets at 23 locations in all five boroughs.
