On Thursday, June 2nd City
Council Member Jimmy Van
Bramer, Queens Borough President
Helen Marshall and Queens Parks
Commissioner
Dorothy
Lewandowski unveiled plans for the
newly redesigned Lou Lodati Park.
Van Bramer and Marshall have
successfully worked to secure $1.4
million in funding for the park
renovations. Plans include a state
of the art dog run, modern basketball courts, a resurfaced softball
field, ecuavoli courts, expanded
lighting, and additional greenery,
including new trees and shrubs.
“It is important to maintain
and enhance the local parks that
support quality of life and make
our neighborhoods great places
to live and work,” said the Council. “Among the many new features, the renovations will provide a terrific dog run that the
many dog lovers in the area will
appreciate. I am pleased to announce this much needed update
to Lou Lodati Park, which will
benefit the ever growing and vibrant community in Sunnyside.”
“An investment in our parks is
an investment in the future. At the
present time, it is my pleasure to
say that since becoming Queens
Borough President I have had the
privilege to allocate more than $142
million in capital funding to urban
oases like this one here. Today, I
am happy to report that City Councilman Van Bramer and I have
each provided half of the $1.4 million that will give this heavilyused patch of green a facelift, not
only for taxpayers, but also their
best friends, their canine companions,” said Queens BP Marshall.
“The Parks Department is excited to show the plans for a $1.4million refurbished Lou Lodati
Park that will improve the softball
and basketball courts, expand lighting, add new plants and trees, in
addition to creating a new dog run
for the Queens’ four-legged
friends,” said Queens Parks Commissioner Lewandowski. “This
project is possible thanks to
$700,000 each allocated Borough
President Marshall and Council
Member Van Bramer.”

A Street Named For A Good Woman
by Luke Adams
Last Saturday morning, at the corner of
45th Street and 48th Avenue, approximately
80 people, including relatives, neighborhood friends and public officials, gathered
to remember Claire Kraft for her years of
devotion to the community she loved and
served. Claire had lived at 48-20 45th Street
in Woodside until her death in 2002, and her
former home is in sight of the new street
sign. Thanks to the excellent efforts of our
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, “Claire
Kraft Way” now permanently marks the
spot to honor this lovely lady.
Claire moved to Woodside in the early
1920’s while she was a little girl. Claire’s
home was close to McGucken’s Milk Farm
and the family bought fresh milk there every
day. The area had acres of open farmland
and undeveloped fields, but the twenties
were the beginning of great urban growth,
due to the advent of the bridge, the development of Long Island, and the spreading of
population from Manhattan.
It was also the beginning of life for St.
Teresa’s Parish around which much of
Claire’s life was devoted, in addition to her
many other passions. In 1925, the Diocese of
Brooklyn bought land and soon began construction of a school and rectory, opening a
school in 1927. On Easter Sunday 1927,
Reverend John Patterson, pastor of St.
Raphael Church, celebrated the first Mass in
the school basement, which served as the
new church. Claire worshiped in and served
St. Teresa’s until her death. She helped build
and make our community strong through her
work. She was on St. Teresa’s Parish Council and Rosary Society. In the early 1950’s,
she met this author, Luke Adams (to whom
her son John refers to as his fourth brother),
when she volunteered and worked with Gateway Community Restoration. That group
was responsible to helping create the
Sunnyside Arch. The arch was the beginning of neighborhood vitalization and remains the area’s most prominent landmark.
Kraft served as
President of the
Woodside Republican Club, and was
on the board of the
Sunnyside Cham- ber of Commerce. She
was a proud member of the 108 Police
Precinct Community Council, United Forties Civic Organization, and many more
local groups which held the community
together, welcomed newcomers and worked
for the public good.
Councilmember Van Bramer acted as
Master of Ceremonies at the June 4 renaming, and introduced the former pastor of St
Teresa’s, Claire’s good friend Msgr. D. Joseph Finnerty. Those who knew Claire well
were aware of how close she was with the
Pastor. Monsignor mentioned that when he
first came to St. Teresa’s, Claire was one of
the first people he met, and joked how she let
him know what he was expected to do!
Former Councilman Walter McCaffrey
also spoke of his ties with Claire. He recalled that his father was also close to her
due her both their positions on the polling
board. They were on opposite sides of the
aisle but remained cordial and
enjoyed each other’s company.
Her sons Roger and John
attended the dedication with
their family, and her third son,
Lawrence who lives in Fort
Worth, Texas, was unable to attend. It would
be difficult to mention all who came together to honor Claire, but her son John
asked that we acknowledge Claire’s good
friend, the late former Republican State
Committeewoman Lee Corcoran, and her
friend Roel Vanderkooi for all the weekends he drove Claire to visit Lee when she
was hospitalized.
Many of us are grateful and thankful that
the street naming was made to one of our
citizens who wasn’t a big politician or rich
member of the community but a great lady
who rolled up her sleeves and volunteered
for the community she loved. She made it a
better place for all of us till this day.
CM Jimmy Van Bramer, two of Kraft’s sons (and very close friend) Roger Kraft,
Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, John Kraft, Luke Adams and Lily Gavin.

Msgr. Finnerty was pleased that God had the sun come out to honor Claire’s day. He
thanked the Councilman for honoring a woman who worked so hard for her community.
Assemblywoman Nolan talked of her 30-year friendship with Claire, and although
politically different they had a strong friendship and enjoyed each others company. L-R:
CB2 Chairman Joe Conley, Walter McCaffrey, Van Bramer, Roger Kraft (Claire’s son),
Nolan, John Kraft (Claire’s son), Luke Adams and Lily Gavin.
John Kraft spoke on behalf of the family, on how they tried to get his mother to move closer
to them on Long Island, but she made it clear she would not move from her neighborhood.

THE WOODSIDE HERALD
Memorial Day
Remembrances
by Peter A. Ross
Sunday, May 29th was a beautiful clear
day perfect for marching and that is exactly
what went on in Forest Hills, Queens. The
66th Annual Forest Hills Memorial Day Parade was held as it usually is along Metropolitan Avenue between 74th Avenue and
Ascan Avenue traveling west to Trotting
Course Lane dispersing just before
Woodhaven Avenue. Sponsored primarily
by the American Legion Continental Post
1424 of Forest Hills, located at 107-15 Metropolitan Avenue at the parades start, this
parade has the distinction of being the second
largest Memorial Day parade in Queens and
the largest veterans sponsored parade in the
County. This year’s special guests and honorees included former State Senator Serphin
Maltese and Congressional Medal of Honor
recipient USMC Sergeant (E5) Robert E.
O’Malley of Woodside who rode on the lead
float with members of the Post. The parade
was well attended by numerous groups including an Army Band, Navy Band, Coastal
Patrol Band, the NYC Corrections Department Piper Band, Sons of the Legion, the
Legionnaires, the Civilian Air Patrol, and of
course various Veterans and affiliated groups
including the DAV (Disabled Veterans),
VFW and soldiers, sailors and airmen from
past wars and current conflicts. Additional
music and fanfare were provided by the City
Twirlers, the Francis Lewis HS Band and
ROTC, the Franklin K. Lane HS Band, the
Christ the King Band, Xavier HS Color Guard,
and our own hometown “Ambassadors of
Goodwill” the Sunnyside Drum Corps who
marched ahead of a consolidation of other
marchers from various high schools and
groups. The kids were proud to once again
have the opportunity to march and remember
the sacrifices of our country’s fallen Veterans and those who currently serve to defend
our rights and freedoms and those of others
around the globe. There were of course the
requisite antique cars and procession of military vehicles as well to round out and add
additional color and nostalgia to the parade.
Monday, May 30th also saw our own local
John V. Daniels VFW Post 2813 hold its
annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the John
V. Daniels Park/Square located at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue
between 51st and 52nd Streets. Post members,
the Ladies Auxiliary and friends and neighbors paid their respects to those fallen while
the Sunnyside Drum Corps provided the background music and fanfare to set the mood and
Boy Scout Troop 390 provided a Ceremonial
Color Guard for the event, trained by none
other than the Post’s Junior Vice Commander
(and Troop Scoutmaster) Eduardo Avila.
After the memorial event members of the
Post headed back to their headquarters at 5127 Queens Boulevard where later in the afternoon they inducted and charged their new
slate of officers, a new member, and hosted
Cub Scout Pack 390’s end-of-year awards
ceremony officiated by Post Commander and
pack Cubmaster Marvin Jeffcoat. A buffet
luncheon was held afterward where the members and guests reminisced on memories past,
current times and plans for the future.

REAL ESTATE FACTS

WELCOME HOME
REAL ESTATE
PET PROPOSALS
QUEENS PRIDE PARADE
Did you realize that 6 out of 10 U.S. households have pets? That
means that those without critter companions are in the minority, but if
you’re a pet owner selling your home, you shouldn’t ignore the perceptions of those families that don’t include cats or dogs.
Odors are the biggest issue. This isn’t to say that your housekeeping
is remiss, but remember that some buyers who visit your home may
experience allergies or be particularly sensitive to pet dander or odors.
Just vacuum the floors and furniture frequently and use an air sanitizer.
During the early stages of your listing, you’ll likely experience more
frequent showings and visits by buyers. This is a particularly good time
to make arrangements to board your pet, or seek out a good “doggie day
care” center for quick visits during showings. This may be safer and less
stressful for your pet than a constant parade of strangers in your home,
and may put buyers more at ease as well.
In any case, be sure to pick up toys, bowls, bedding in advance of a
showing, just as you would tidy up the children’s things and other rooms
throughout the house before buyers visit.
The World Around I.S. 125
Starbucks of Sunnyside and the students of Ms. Clarisse Frenkel’s art
classes have joined forces to present an art display entitled “Our Vision;
The World Around Us.”
Over the past few months, under the direction of Ms. Frenkel, fifth,
sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from Thomas J. McCann
Woodside Intermediate School 125 have been creating their visions of
our world in watercolor, charcoal, acrylic, and through paper mache
sculptures.
Through a community partnership established with the local starbucks,
manager Matt Griffith has graciously offered exhibit space for some of
the students’ work. Their art will be on display at Starbucks beginning
on Wednesday, June 15th, and the community is encouraged to stop by
to view and enjoy the exceptional work created by the talented youngsters of I.S. 125.
Starbucks is located at 46-09 Queens Boulevard, and is open daily
from 5 am to 11:30 pm. The display will be available for viewing through
June 26th, so everyone will have time to enjoy this exhibit with their
favorite morning (or evening) latte!
On Sunday, June 5th Council
Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined
NYC Council Speaker Christine
C. Quinn, Council Member Danny
Dromm, Senator Gianaris and numerous elected officials to march
in the Queens PRIDE parade. Celebrating the 19th annual “Queens
Pride” Day, participants marched
down 37th Avenue in the heart of
Jackson Heights. The event also
featured a multicultural festival and
live performances.
With over 50,000 in attendance,
Council Member Van Bramer addressed the crowd, highlighting the
important role awareness and visibility continues to have on the
LGBT civil rights movement and
the passage of Marriage Equality
in New York.
“For nearly two decades, the
Pride Day celebrations in Queens
have increased awareness of LGBT
issues,” said Council Member
Jimmy Van Bramer. “As we celebrate our many victories over the
years, it is important to recognize
the work that remains. I am proud
to join the tens of thousands standing together in support of Marriage Equality in New York.”

To Yonkers
Casino
Betty, Mary, Hedy, Ann, Margaret, May, Nelly and Francis were some of the ladies
that went on the last casino trip. Nelly actually won $10,000 a few months ago! So make
some room in your calendar and join us for our next trip in July! We’d love to have you!
