On tour Bryn and Bond Katherine’s chorus per ormio Ar daith Bryn a Bond . . Corws Katherine croeso “o ddawnsio i offerynnau pres, cerddorfeydd i ddrama, mae Celfyddydau Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn siop-un-stop ar gyfer pobl ifanc dawnus Cymru” Western Mail, 2004 “from dance to brass, orchestra to drama, National Youth Arts Wales is the one stop shop for Wales’s talented young people” Western Mail, 2004 ormio 3 04. welcome Yn perfformio3, cewch grynodeb o berfformiadau a digwyddiadau'r haf, yn ogystal â’r newyddion diweddaraf am Gelfyddydau Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yng Nghanolfan y Mileniwm. Mae tîm Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru (FfCAC) wedi symud i Fae Caerdydd, lle bydd yn trefnu nifer o ddigwyddiadau yn ystod misoedd agoriadol y Ganolfan. Inside perfformio 3, you will find a round-up of this summer’s performances and events, as well as the latest on NYAW at the Wales Millennium Centre. The WAMF team has re-located to Cardiff Bay where it will be organising several events over the Centre’s opening months. Yn y rhifyn Hydref/Gaeaf hwn, byddwn hefyd yn dathlu’r cyfraniad y mae aelodau presennol a chyn-aelodau wedi ei wneud i’r byd cerddorol. O Bryn i Bond (y grŵp merched disglair, nid yr ysbïwr gwên-deg rhyngwladol), mae CCIC wedi cael effaith fawr – darllenwch y manylion i gyd yn y tudalennau canol. In this Autumn/Winter issue, we also celebrate the contribution that members past and present have made to the world of music. From Bryn to Bond (glitzy girl band, not suave international spy), NYAW has made a huge impact – read the inside story on our centre pages. Rydym wrthi’n brysur yn cynnal clyweliadau ar gyfer ein holl grwpiau perfformio. Os hoffech wybod mwy, trowch at y Dyddiadur am ragor o fanylion. Auditions are in full swing for all our performance groups. If you would like to know more, turn to our Diary for further details. I’r rhai hynny na lwyddodd i gael tocynnau i un o’r digwyddiadau, roedd cyfle i gael cip ar un o grwpiau CCIC ar BBC Cymru neu S4C wrth i griwiau camera holi’r perfformwyr gefn llwyfan. From an Art Deco ballroom to a festival concert hall in Berlin, members of National Youth Arts Wales showcased their talents in a variety of settings this summer. For those unable to secure tickets for an event, there was always the chance to catch one of the NYAW groups on BBC Wales, or S4C, as camera crews caught up with performers behind-the-scenes. Roedd criw newyddion teledu o’r BBC wrth law i recordio trip Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru i Berlin, lle cododd y gynulleidfa i’w cymeradwyo ddim llai na phum gwaith yng Ngŵyl w wyl Young Euro Classic. Cyfrannodd Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru £15,000 i gefnogi ymweliad y Gerddorfa, ac aeth y Gweinidog Diwylliant, Alun Pugh, i Berlin yn arbennig i gefnogi’r cerddorion ifanc a oedd ar y llwyfan yn y Konzerthaus adferedig crand yn y Gendarmenmarkt. Diolch hefyd i Gyfeillion CCIC, a gyfrannodd £5,000 at daith y Gerddorfa i Berlin; roedd hi hefyd yn braf gweld nifer o’r Cyfeillion yn y gynulleidfa. A BBC television news crew was on hand to record the National Youth Orchestra of Wales trip to Berlin where it received no fewer than five standing ovations at the Young Euro Classic Festival. The Welsh Assembly Government contributed £15,000 to support the Nash’s appearance and Culture Minister, Alun Pugh, flew out to Berlin specially to support the young musicians, who took to the stage at the impressively restored Konzerthaus in the Gendarmenmarkt. Thanks also to the Friends of NYOW, who contributed £5,000 to the Orchestra’s Berlin trip; it was also great to see so many Friends in the audience. "Mae’r Gerddorfa yn llysgennad gwych, ac yn brawf amlwg o’r stôr o dalent sydd gyda ni fel cenedl," dywedodd Mr Pugh mewn araith i dderbyniad llawn yn Llysgenhadaeth Prydain ar ôl cyngerdd y Gerddorfa. "The Orchestra is an excellent ambassador and clearly shows the wealth of talent we have as a nation," Mr Pugh said in a speech given at a packed reception at the British Embassy following the Orchestra’s concert. Roedd y Gerddorfa hefyd wedi creu argraff ar feirniaid cerddorol Berlin (ymhlith y mwyaf llym yn Ewrop): "Mae’r offerynwyr ifanc hyn o Gymru yn ymroddgar, yn dangos rhagoriaeth dechnegol a sylw i fanylion," ysgrifennodd Klaus Geitel yn y Berliner Morgenpost. Roedd Frederik Hanssen yn Der Tagesspiegel yn cytuno: "Roedd y Gerddorfa o Gymru yn wych, yn arbennig yr offerynwyr taro cŵl." Roedd Momentum Ceiri Torjussen, a oedd yn rhan o’r rhaglen, wedi creu argraff arbennig ar y gynulleidfa, a oedd gan fwyaf yn bobl ifanc. Mae gan yr ŵyl bolisi o hyrwyddo gwaith cyfansoddwyr ifanc, a dewiswyd Ceiri – sy'n ddim ond 28 oed ac yn gyn-aelod o’r Gerddorfa – i gynrychioli Cymru gan arweinydd CCIC, Owain Arwel Hughes. Berlin’s music critics (some of the toughest in Europe) were also impressed: "These young Welsh players possess dedication, technical superiority and attention to detail," wrote Klaus Geitel in Berliner Morgenpost. Der Tagesspiel’s Frederik Hanssen agreed: "the Welsh Orchestra was tops, above all the cool percussionists." The predominantly young audience was particularly impressed with Ceiri Torjussen’s Momentum, which formed part of the programme. The Festival has a policy of promoting the work of young composers and Ceiri – who is just 28 and a former member of the "Nash"– was chosen to represent Wales by NYOW Conductor, Owain Arwel Hughes. Llun/picture: DGIC/NYDW Alun Hoddinnott celebrated his 75th birthday by composing a new work for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, who featured in another On Show programme dedicated to the Welshman’s career. And the Band was amongst the cheerleaders supporting The Memo in Newbridge, as it battled for funds in the BBC’s popular series, Restoration. Unfortunately, The Memo didn’t win through, unlike the Band which won a standing ovation and an invitation to return to play in the spectacular Art Deco interior. It must have been its rousing rendition of the Harry Potter theme tune that did the trick! Ar Daith Tour Bus Dathlodd Alun Hoddinnott ei ben-blwydd yn 75 drwy gyfansoddi darn newydd ar gyfer Band Pres Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, a gafodd sylw mewn rhaglen arall o On Show, a oedd yn ymdrin yn arbennig â gyrfa’r Cymro. Roedd y Band hefyd ymysg y rhai fu’n cefnogi'r Memo yn Nhrecelyn wrth iddo gystadlu am nawdd yng nghyfres boblogaidd y BBC, Restoration. Yn anffodus, aflwyddiannus fu'r Memo, yn wahanol i’r band a gafodd gymeradwyaeth frwd a gwahoddiad i ddychwelyd i chwarae yn yr awyrgylch Art Deco trawiadol. Mae’n rhaid mai ei berfformiad cynhyrfus o arwyddgan Harry Potter oedd y cynhwysyn hud! Llun/picture: Whispers in the Woods/Sibrydion Henri Oguike, the new Artistic Director for NYDW, dropped into the BBC’s On Show studio for a discussion with presenter Aled Jones and Welsh film director Marc Evans, prior to opening Spatial Signatures at Theatr Brycheiniog with young dancers from Wales. Spatial Signatures was also nominated as The Guardian’s Pick of the Week. Llun/picture: Simone Rebello NYBBW/BPCIC Llun/picture: Whispers in the Woods/Sibrydion Ar Daith Ar Daith Bus TourTourBus Ymwelodd Henri Oguike, Cyfarwyddwr Artistig newydd DGIC, â stiwdio On Show y BBC i drafod gyda’r cyflwynydd, Aled Jones, a’r cyfarwyddwr ffilm o Gymru, Marc Evans, cyn agoriad Spatial Signatures yn Theatr Brycheiniog gyda dawnswyr ifanc o Gymru. Cafodd Spatial Signatures hefyd ei enwebu ar gyfer Pick of the Week yn The Guardian. Trodd Theatr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru y chwedl draddodiadol ar ei phen yn ei berfformiad o Sibrydion Greg Cullen. Disgrifiodd David Adams, mewn adolygiad ar gyfer y Western Mail, y sioe fel "cymysgedd dros ben llestri fendigedig o chwedloniaeth, myth, rhamant a ffantasi Hollywoodaidd Hollywoodaidd". I fyfyrwyr ar y cwrs pum wythnos, nid pwysau dysgu’r dawnsio step Apalachaidd, na’r canu pedwar llais oedd yr unig bethau i'w cadw ar bigau'r drain – roedden nhw hefyd yn cael canlyniadau eu harholiadau yn ystod yr ymarferion yng Nghanolfan y Celfyddydau yn Aberystwyth, digwyddiad a ddangoswyd yn fyw ar y rhaglen Newyddion ar S4C. The National Youth Theatre of Wales turned the traditional fairy story upside down in its production of Greg Cullen’s Whispers in the Woods. David Adams reviewing for the Western Mail described the show as "a gloriously extravagant ragbag of fairytale, myth, romance and Hollywood fantasy". For students on the five-week long course, it wasn’t just the pressure of learning Appalachian step-dancing, or singing in harmony that had them chewing their nails – they also received their exam results during rehearsals at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, an event captured live on S4C for Newyddion. Felly mae haf arall o deithio wedi dod i ben, ond does neb yn gorffwyso (waeth faint maen nhw’n haeddu hynny). Yn ystod yr hydref/ gaeaf bydd CCIC yn cynnal clyweliadau ar hyd a lled y wlad. Trowch at y dyddiadur am fanylion pellach – pwy a ŵyr, efallai mai CHI fydd yn chwarae’n fyw ar y teledu neu ar lwyfan cyngerdd y flwyddyn nesaf. So, another summer’s touring over, but no one’s resting on their laurels (however well deserved). During this Autumn/Winter, NYAW hosts auditions the length and breadth of the country. Check our Diary for further details – who knows, it could be YOU playing live on television, or on a concert stage next year. Erchyll o Soniarus! Bydd y soprano Katherine Jenkins yn rhyddhau CD newydd yn yr hydref, ac arno grŵp cefndir arbennig iawn – Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru. Cafodd gweinyddwr Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru, Chris Sharpe, sgwrs â Katherine pan ddaeth hi i recordio gydag aelodau’r Côr yn ystod eu cwrs preswyl yng Ngholeg y Drindod, Caerfyrddin: Mae hoffter Hannibal Lector o opera yn un o'r nodweddion yn ei gymeriad sy’n dueddol o gael eu hanghofio, ond nid gan y soprano o Gastell Nedd, Katherine Jenkins. Pan gafodd ei herio i ddod o hyd i ddeunydd ar gyfer ei hail CD, cofiodd yn syth am y gwaith pwerus Vide Cor Meum, a gyfansoddwyd gan Patrick Cassady yn arbennig ar gyfer y ffilm arswyd lwyddiannus gyda’r actor o Gymru, Syr Anthony Hopkins yn chwarae’r brif ran. Aeth Katherine hefyd yn ôl at ei gwreiddiau wrth recordio’r CD; defnyddiodd dalentau lleisiol Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru i gydganu â hi yn y ddeuawd bwerus. Fel cyn-aelod o’r Côr, teimlai y byddai ei "sain bur" yn gweddu i’w llais ac yn cyfrannu rhywbeth ychydig yn wahanol at y prosiect. Yn y diwedd, gwnaeth y Côr gymaint o argraff arni, aeth ymlaen i recordio darnau eraill ar gyfer y CD, gan gynnwys Calon Lân. Gory, gory hallelujah! "Mae adran y dynion yn y Côr eleni yn arbennig o gryf, ac roedden nhw’n swnio’n fendigedig yn perfformio Calon Lân yn y stiwdio," eglurodd. "Ond rwy’n ofnadwy o ddiolchgar i holl aelodau’r Côr am eu cyfraniad. Roedd y llwyth gwaith yr oedd hyn yn ei olygu wedi ychwanegu’n fawr at haf a oedd eisoes yn eithriadol o brysur." Soprano Katherine Jenkins releases a new CD this Autumn and it features a very special backing group – the National Youth Choir of Wales. WAMF administrator, Chris Sharpe, caught up with Katherine when she came to record with the Choir’s members during their summer residency at Trinity College, Carmarthen: "This year’s male section of the Choir is particularly strong and it sounded wonderful performing Calon Lân in the studio," she explains. "But I’m extremely grateful to all the Choir members for their input. The work load we imposed on them added to an already hectic summer schedule." Y thema ar gyfer CD diweddaraf Katherine yw perfformio darnau corawl traddodiadol gyda thro modern, gan gynnwys y perfformiad cyntaf gan soprano o O Sole Mio. Ond mae’n datgelu bod ganddi un uchelgais arall yn y cyfamser. Hannibal Lector’s taste for opera tends to be one of his more overlooked characteristics, but not for Neath-born soprano, Katherine Jenkins. When she was challenged to come up with material for her second CD she immediately recalled the powerful opus Vide Cor Meum, specially composed by Patrick Cassady for the hit horror film starring Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. Katherine’s latest CD takes for its theme the performance of traditional choral pieces with a modern twist, including the first performance by a soprano of O Sole Mio. But there is one more ambition to fulfil in the meantime, she reveals. "Byddai’n wych cael perfformio’n fyw gyda’r Côr rywbryd yn y dyfodol agos." Cadwch eich llygaid ar agor. Beth am roi cynnig ar ein cystadleuaeth i ennill copi wedi ei lofnodi o CD Katherine? Mae yma BUM copi i’w hennill. C: Pa lofrudd enwog yn y byd ffilmiau a ysbrydolodd CD diweddaraf Katherine? Recording for the CD also took Katherine back to her roots as she enlisted the vocal talents of the NYCW to accompany her for the powerful duet. A former member of the Choir, she felt that its "pure sound" would both complement her voice and bring something a little bit extra to the project. In the end, she was so impressed by the Choir she went on to record further tracks for the CD, including Calon Lân. "It would be terrific to perform live with the Choir sometime in the near future." Dyma bedwarawd a fyddai’n gwneud i unrhyw hyrwyddwr ruthro at ei ffôn. Cofiwch, cawson nhw i gyd eu gweld gyntaf yn un o’n grwpiau ni! National Youth Arts Wales has launched the career of many Welsh singers and musicians. Here is a quartet that would make any promoter rush to the ‘phone. Remember, they were all seen first with one of our groups! Bryn Terfel Katherine Jenkins Eos Chater John Cale Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru: 1984 Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru: 1996 – 99 Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru: 1992 – 95 Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru: 1957 – 62 Er bod nifer yn gyfarwydd â gyrfa lwyddiannus Bryn yn recordio ac ar y llwyfan, ni fyddai llawer yn gwybod iddo gychwyn canu yng Nghôr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru. A dweud y gwir, cymerodd y canwr bas-bariton enwog ran yng nghwrs cyntaf y Côr, a gynhaliwyd yng Ngwesty’r Bay yn Aberystwyth fis Tachwedd 1984, lle bu’n canu unawd yn Rejoicing the Lamb Benjamin Britten. A’i farn am y cwrs? "Beth am i’r athrawon a’r trefnwyr brynu peint i bawb y tro nesaf!!!!! nesaf!!!!!" Mae’n siŵr mai Katherine yw soprano enwocaf y foment, ac mae hithau’n gyn-aelod arall o’r Côr. Bydd yn dilyn esiampl Tom Jones cyn hir drwy ymddangos mewn cyngerdd mawreddog yn Las Vegas. Fodd bynnag, roedd ganddi ddigon o amser i ofyn am help y Côr i recordio ei halbwm newydd – mewn lleoliad sydd ychydig yn llai amlwg, sef stiwdio sain yng Nghaerfyrddin. Y ferch o Gaerdydd, Eos Chater, yw ail feiolinydd y pedwarawd arloesol Bond, yr ensemble cerddorol sy'n croesi ffiniau ac sydd newydd ryddhau eu hail albwm, Classified. Yn gyn-aelod o Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, mae Eos ar ganol taith hyrwyddo brysur ar hyn o bryd, ond mae hi’n cyfaddef i'w hyfforddiant clasurol fod yn hanfodol ar gyfer bywyd ar y ffordd. "Mae i gyd i’w wneud â datblygu eich sgiliau ymarferol," meddai. "A gwnewch yn siŵr bod eich rheolwr yn un da". Rhwng chwarae’r fiola gyda Cherddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru a chyrraedd y brig gyda’r band enwog o’r chwedegau, Velvet Underground, mae’r gŵr o Rydaman, John Cale, wedi ysbrydoli llwythi o gerddorion a chynhyrchwyr ffilm, gan gynnwys y Cymro Marc Evans. Roedd yn adnabyddus yn y Gerddorfa am wisgo sbectol haul wrth chwarae’r clasuron – fel y gallwch weld o’r ffotograff yn ein harchif. National Youth Choir of Wales: 1984 National Youth Choir of Wales: 1996 – 99 National Youth Orchestra of Wales: 1992 – 95 National Youth Orchestra of Wales: 1957 – 62 Whilst many are familiar with Bryn’s successful recording and stage career, few might realise he started out singing with the National Youth Choir of Wales. In fact, the celebrated bass-baritone was a student on the Choir’s inaugural course held at the Aberystwyth Bay Hotel in November 1984, singing solo on Benjamin Britten’s Rejoicing the Lamb. And his verdict? "Why don’t the teachers and organisers buy us all a pint next time!!!!!" Probably the most famous soprano around at the moment, Katherine is another former Choir member. She’s following in the footsteps of Tom Jones and appearing in a glitzy concert programme in Las Vegas soon, but still found time to enlist the support of the NYCW to record her new album in a rather less high profile venue – namely, a recording studio in Carmarthen. Cardiff’s Eos Chater is second violinist for the ground-breaking quartet Bond, a cross-over music-making ensemble which has just released its second album, Classified. A former member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, Eos is in the midst of a whistle-stop promotional tour at the moment, but admits her classical training was vital for dealing with life on the road. "It’s all about developing your practical skills," she says, "And get a good manager." From playing viola with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales to hitting the high notes with legendary Sixties band Velvet Underground, Ammanford-born John Cale has been an inspiration for countless musicians and film makers, including Wales’ Marc Evans. He was renowned in the Orchestra for playing the classics wearing his sunglasses – as our archive photograph reveals. New horizons Ar y gorwel Bydd Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru yn agor ei drysau ym mis Tachwedd a bydd Celfyddydau Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yno! Bydd gan ein cydweithwyr yn Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru swyddfeydd newydd sbon yn y ganolfan newydd arloesol – yn ogystal â stiwdio sain. Beth allwn ni ei ddisgwyl? Mae Keith Griffin yn rhoi hanes y bennod ddiweddaraf: Cantorion, cyfansoddwyr, offerynwyr pres ac un canwr bas-bariton enwog iawn fydd cyfraniad CCIC i agoriad Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru yng Nghaerdydd. Offerynwyr Pres Symffonig Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru fydd yn chwarae rhai o’r nodau cyntaf, gyda ffanffer agoriadol a gyfansoddwyd gan Gareth Glyn. Byddant yn perfformio ar risiau blaen yr adeilad brynhawn Gwener Tachwedd 26, wrth i’r drysau gael eu hagor am y tro cyntaf gydag allwedd sydd eisoes wedi teithio’r byd. Wedyn bydd Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn perfformio darn o waith Karl Jenkins a gomisiynwyd yn arbennig, In these stones horizons sing, ac ar ôl hynny bydd aelodau o’r cyhoedd yn cael camu i mewn i’r Ganolfan am y tro cyntaf. Bydd y Côr yn ymuno â Chôr Cyfun Enfawr i berfformio’r darn cyfan ar gyfer y Gala Brenhinol ddydd Sul, Tachwedd 28, dan arweinyddiaeth Karl Jenkins ei hun. Bryn Terfel fydd yr unawdydd gwadd – Llywydd CCIC a chyn-aelod. "Chewch chi mo’r cyfle i berfformio y tu allan a’r tu mewn i adeilad yn aml," yn ôl Keith, "Ry’n ni wir yn edrych ymlaen at gymryd rhan mewn digwyddiad mor hanesyddol." Mae Karl Jenkins siŵr o fod yn un o gyfansoddwyr mwyaf adnabyddus Cymru, ac mae ei wreiddiau ef hefyd yn CCIC. Mae Karl yn gyn-aelod o Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, ac ef yw Llywydd presennol Cyfeillion CCIC. "Gall cantorion y côr presennol ddysgu gan ganwr byd-enwog fel Bryn, yn ogystal â mynd i’r afael â chomisiwn newydd sbon, gyda’r cyfansoddwr ei hun yn eu tywys drwy wahanol adrannau ei waith." 26 Tachwedd | 3.30pm | Seremoni Agoriadol Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru ac Offerynwyr Pres Symffoni Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru Ffanffer – Gareth Glyn; In these stones horizons sing (detholiad yn unig) – Karl Jenkins 28 Tachwedd | 7.30pm |-Cyngerdd Gala Brenhinol Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru In these stones horizons sing (perfformiad cyntaf) – Karl Jenkins Tocynnau a gwybodaeth: CMC 08700 40 2000 www.wmc.org.uk The Wales Millennium Centre opens its doors in November and National Youth Arts Wales will be there! Our colleagues in WAMF will be resident at the new, state-of-the-art centre in a suite of brand new offices – and a recording studio. What can we expect? Keith Griffin fills us in on the latest chapter: Choristers, composers, brass players and one very famous bass-baritone will make up the NYAW contribution to the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Some of the first notes to be sounded will be courtesy of National Youth Symphonic Brass Wales performing an opening fanfare, composed by Gareth Glyn. It will perform from the steps of the building on the afternoon of Friday November 26, just as the doors are ceremoniously opened for the first time using a key that has already travelled the world. The National Youth Choir of Wales will then sing an extract from Karl Jenkins’ speciallycommissioned work “In these stones horizons sing”, following which members of the public will take their first steps inside the Centre. The Choir will join a Massed Choir of Voices performing the work in its entirety for the Royal Gala on Sunday, November 28, under the baton of Karl Jenkins himself. Guest soloist will be Bryn Terfel – President of NYCW and a former member. "It’s not often you have the opportunity to perform both inside and outside a venue," Keith points out, "We are really looking forward to taking part in such an historic occasion." Karl Jenkins is probably one of Wales’ best-known composers, and he too has his musical roots in NYAW. Karl is a former member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and is currently President of the Friends of NYOW. The Network will ensure all this continues, but it’s also a way for people to discover more about the whole process of a show being put on and to feel part of a really committed team. I hope businesses in Wales will get involved – it promises to be fun socially, as well as offering NYAW a chance to develop its exciting plans for the future." Fel rhan o’r darn llwyddiannus, ymbiliodd Patrick, o Gaerdydd, am fwy o arian ar gyfer addysg gerddorol yng Nghymru. Llongyfarchiadau Patrick Bidder! Patrick, who plays the violin with the "Nash," was winner of the literary medal for Welsh learners at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod. Patrick, from Cardiff, made a plea for more money for music education in Wales as part of his prize-winning submission. Mae pump o fyfyrwyr Jazz Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru wedi creu cymaint o argraff ar drefnwyr A Weekend of Jazz y Birmingham Conservatoire, fel bod pob un o’r pump wedi cael ysgoloriaeth i’w galluogi i fynychu’r digwyddiad deuddydd yn yr Hydref. Y pump yw: Iestyn Jones (Caerfyrddin), Ben Franks (Caerdydd), Tommy Pearson (Ceredigion), Nicholas Mead (Abertawe) a Tom Lumley (Gwynedd). Five students from National Youth Jazz Wales have impressed the organisers for Birmingham Conservatoire’s A Weekend of Jazz to such an extent that they have each received scholarships to enable them to attend the two-day event in the Autumn. They are: Iestyn Jones (Carmarthen), Ben Franks (Cardiff), Tommy Pearson (Ceredigion), Nicholas Mead (Swansea) and Tom Lumley (Gwynedd). Rhagor o wobrwyon, y tro hwn i fynychwyr cwrs haf Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn 2004. Llongyfarchiadau i: Ciaran Jenkins (Gwobr Ffrancon Thomas); Sarah Cresswell (Gwobr Haydn Davies); Simon Cox (Gwobr Goronwy Evans); Sarah Broder (Gwobr Elgar Howarth); Elen Haf Richards (Gwobr Cyfeillion CGIC) a Natasha Fevre a Sarah Roberts (Gwobr Gwynne Edwards). More prize winners, this time from the NYOW 2004 summer course. A round of applause for: Ciaran Jenkins (Ffrancon Thomas Prize); Sarah Cresswell (Haydn Davies Prize); Simon Cox (Goronwy Evans Prize); Sarah Broder (Elgar Howarth Prize); Elen Haf Richards (Friends of NYOW Prize) and Natasha Fevre and Sarah Roberts (Gwynne Edwards Prize). Mae dau o gyn-fyfyrwyr Theatr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru wedi gwneud argraff ar y llwyfan yn Llundain mewn cynhyrchiad o cancer time gan y dramodydd arobryn o Gymru, Gary Owen. Ymddangosodd Karen Paullada a Tonya Smith yn nhafarn y Latchmere, Battersea, ym mis Medi, gan dderbyn adolygiadau rhagorol am eu portread o ddwy fenyw ifanc yn lladd amser mewn canolfan alwadau. Two former NYTW students have made their mark on the London stage in a production of cancer time by the award winning Welsh playwright Gary Owen. Karen Paullada and Tonya Smith were appearing at the Latchmere Pub, Battersea, in September and received great reviews for their portrayal of two young women killing time in a call centre. Andrew O’Neill Rheolwr CGIC/NYOW Manager Gyda thristwch mawr y cyhoeddwn farwolaeth Andrew O'Neill. Ymunodd Andrew â thîm Celfyddydau Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn Ebrill 2002 fel Rheolwr Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru. Cyfrannodd i'r swydd nid yn unig ei frwdfrydedd a'i arbenigedd mewn cerddoriaeth, ond hefyd ei brofiad helaeth gyda'r cyfryngau – yn arbennig yng Nghymru – a'i brofiad hefyd o reoli digwyddiadau. Roedd Andrew yn hynod o falch o Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru ac, fel cyn-aelod ei hun, roedd wrth ei fodd bod y rhod wedi troi'n llawn a'i fod ef ei hun yng nghanol berw cerddoriaeth ieuenctid unwaith eto. Gydag arweiniad Andrew, mae'r Gerddorfa wedi gweld nifer o newidiadau mewn polisi a gweithdrefnau dros y deunaw mis diwethaf - pob un ohonynt â’r nod o ddod â mwy o amlygrwydd i’r Gerddorfa a dathlu ei champau sylweddol. Un digwyddiad arbennig o arwyddocaol oedd ymweliad diweddar y Gerddorfa â Berlin, lle gwahoddwyd hi i berfformio gan Wyl yr Young Euro Classic. Yn anffodus, ni fu modd i Andrew ddod ar y daith, ond roedd ei galon yno gyda'r tîm a chafodd fwynhau'r hanesion bendigedig am yr ymweliad pan ddaeth y Gerddorfa'n ôl i Gymru. Roedd hiwmor a synnwyr digrifwch Andrew yn goleuo'r gweithle; bydd ei ffrindiau yn CCIC a phawb sydd â chysylltiad â'r Gerddorfa Ieuenctid yn ei golli'n fawr iawn. It is with great sadness that we report the death of Andrew O'Neill. Andrew joined the team of National Youth Arts Wales in April 2002 in the role of Manager of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. He brought to the post not only his enthusiasm for and expertise in music, but also his considerable experience with the media – particularly in Wales – and in event management. Andrew was tremendously proud of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and, as a former member himself, was delighted to come full-circle and find himself in the midst of youth music once again. With Andrew’s guidance, the Orchestra has seen a number of policy shifts and procedural changes over the past 18 months – all of which are designed to raise the profile of the Orchestra and celebrate its considerable achievements. Of particular significance was the Orchestra’s recent trip to Berlin, where it performed at the invitation of the Young Euro Classic Festival. Sadly, Andrew was unable to attend but he was with the team in spirit, and was able to share and enjoy the many, wonderful reports upon the Orchestra’s return to Wales. Andrew brought a great sense of fun and good humour to the workplace; he will be missed by his friends at NYAW and by all associated with The Nash. per ormio Bulletin .
