Teen lived with dead mother,
grandmother after murdering them
By Marie Beth Jones
A
fter shooting both his mother and
grandmother to death on February
9, 1989, Larnell Strauther, 19, lived in
the house with their decomposing bodies for more than two weeks.
Brazoria County Sheriff’s Captain
Gene Smith identified the victims as
Linda White, 35, and her mother, Mazie
Williams, 54. Each of them had been
shot in the back of the head with a .380caliber automatic pistol.
The shootings occurred in a threebedroom home White rented on FM 524
in Danciger, near West Columbia.
Strauther told investigators that after
he and his grandmother were in a back
bedroom discussing his decision to join
the Army he went into another room,
got his gun, returned to the bedroom
and shot Williams while she was lying
in bed.
When his mother returned from work
at a Wharton supermarket, he told her
what he had done and as she prayed
over Williams’ body, he fired a shot into
the back of her head and she fell dead on
the bedroom floor.
The bodies were discovered February
21st, after two of the women’s friends
became concerned that something was
wrong, because the women had not been
to church for the past two Sundays.
Dissatisfied with Strauther’s state-
ments that his
mother
and
grandmother
were visiting
a sick relative in Florida,
the
visitors
walked across
the street and
called
the
sheriff’s Office. Deputies Larnell Strauther
found the two bodies and held Strauther
for questioning.
On April 5, 1989, he was indicted by
the Brazoria County Grand Jury on one
count of capital murder. His trial was
held in Judge John Rainey’s 149th District Court in Angleton in September of
1989.
The prosecutors, District Attorney
Jim Mapel and First Assistant, Steve
Crenshaw, sought the death penalty.
Defense attorneys were two former
prosecutors, David Sharp and Elliot
Knott. Their motion for a change of
venue was denied.
In opening statements to the jury of
seven women and five men, Sharp described the murders as two separate and
“completely irrational” acts.
The defense did not dispute that Strauther

lthough his name conjures up images of
weekly gunfights, he was actually given the
matinee-sounding sobriquet when his father set him
astride a watermelon and his uncle commented his
eyes looked "a little buckshot." This was a fortuitous slip, for nobody would take "Bloodshot" Lane
seriously, even without the watermelon.
Newly married, young Buckshot needed a better
paying job than his early morning paper route, even
though it was the largest in the county. He ran for
Sheriff on a campaign slogan of "Vote for me, or Sheriff "Buckshot" Lane of

years and as Sheriff for 12 more. Early on he gained
a reputation for honesty and fair play. Employing a common sense approach
to law enforcement, he would differentiate between the "accidental" and
habitual criminal.
One of the highlights of his career was burning the Kentleton Bridge on
Highway 59 in 1935. The bridge had caused scores of accidents due to the
faulty alignment of the gravel road leading to it. After 3 college students
were killed, the bridge mysteriously caught fire, causing the State to built
a new (and safer) one. The District Attorney said he would buy "the finest
suit available" to whoever would confess. Buckshot learned from none other
than J. Edgar himself, that the statute of limitations on bridge burning was
10 years. Shortly after the 10th anniversary, Buckshot asked for his suit.
Buckshot was not without his critics. As he put it: "It's hard to get along
with County Commissioners if you count the gravel trucks", which he did.
He taught himself fingerprinting, learned to fly, and raised money for an
airplane the county couldn't afford by requesting a dollar from anyone who
wanted to donate. His fund-raising slogan was "A Buck for Buck". A total

dead man from 2006
GALVESTON - January 26, 2006
Galveston Police officers responded to a
call of a partially decomposed body in a
swampy area behind the shopping center
at 2700 61st street. There, officers found
the body of a white man lying near the
waters edge.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition, no immediate identification was
made. After an autopsy and anthropological exam, the man's skull was sent
to a forensic artist at the Houston Police
Department and a facial reconstruction
was performed.
Photos were released of the reconstruction but no leads developed that assisted
in the man's identification. Police are
still actively trying to find out who this
man is, almost four years later.
Investigators believe the man is a Cau-
casian, 45-55
years old, approximately
5'7" - 5'10" tall
with gray facial hair (stubble).
He was
found wearing
a gray plaid shirt and a blue shirt with
red stripes underneath it. He wore denim
(blue jean) pants with a brown braided
leather belt, and black tennis shoes.
He also had a green and tan ball cap
with the logo " Galveston Island " and
palm trees on the front of it.
Anyone with information which may
help identity this man is urged to contact
Detective Michelle Sollenberger at 409765-3770 in Galveston.

committed the actions that led to the
women’s deaths, but the jury would
have to determine whether the actions
constituted capital murder.
Mapel explained that in a capital murder charge, the jury would have to determine whether Strauther’s actions were
deliberate, if he presented a continuing
threat to society, and whether he had
reasonable provocation.
The defense sought to prevent admission of evidence taken from the home
where the bodies were found because
the investigators failed to obtain a search
warrant.
They also objected to the length of
time – almost 20 hours – that Strauther
was held in custody before being formally charged, and asked that the statement
he gave to investigators be excluded.
Judge Rainey dismissed each of these
objections after hearing testimony from
Sheriff’s Investigator Steve Ricks and
others.
Ricks testified he talked to Strauther
after being dispatched to White’s house
on February 21st. After obtaining permission from Henry Alexander, owner
of the home, Ricks went inside, where
he smelled “a strong odor of decomposing flesh.”
He found White’s body lying on the
floor. Shortly afterward he pulled back
a sheet on the bed, revealing Williams’
badly decomposed body.
Ricks said he did not obtain a search
warrant before entering the house, but
added that Justice of the Peace Bill
Snead was at the scene and could have
issued the warrant.
After finding the bodies, Ricks said,
he returned to his car, where Strauther
was waiting, and read him his rights.
Strauther agreed to give a statement,
Ricks said. He typed the confession as
Strauther gave it, and neither promises
nor threats were involved.
In this statement, which Mapel read
to the jury, Strauther said that after talking with his grandmother he got the pistol from his room and returned to where
she lay in bed.
“I did not say a word. I pulled the trigger and shot her in the lower left side of
the head,” the statement continued.
He intended to shoot himself, but
couldn't do it. When his mother came
home he told her what he had done and
she said everything would be all right,
according to his statement.
He said he then grabbed the gun again
and told White he loved her before
shooting her as she prayed over Williams’ body.
Witnesses called by Mapel included
Michelle Higgins, a family friend, who
was one of two women who visited the
home on February 21st. She said that
as they were leaving after Strauther told
them his mother and grandmother were
in Florida two women who had been in
the house with Strauther came to her
car. They told her they had seen a body
in the back bedroom, so Higgins went
across the road to ask the resident there
to call the police.
Henry Alexander, owner of the house
White was renting, said that he had previously considered Strauther polite and
respectful.
When he entered the rental property
with an officer on Februry 21st, Alexander said, he immediately noticed the
smell. Opening the bedroom door, he
saw White’s body lying on the floor. He
and the deputy then left the house and a
sheriff’s investigator was called.
Consuela Tims, 20, of Brazoria, testified she and two other friends visited
Strauther in the home on both February
18th and 21st. Strauther asked them to
promise not to go to the back bedroom,
she said, because “something died under
the house” or the dog had dug up something there.
Tims also testified that after seeing
the body on the floor on the 21st, she
and her friends, Stephanie Woodward
and Robert Royston, went outside to
talk to Higgins.
Rainey overruled Knott’s effort to
strike Tims’ testimony because she had
been trespassing by going into the bedroom after Strauther had asked her not
to.
When Strauther’s three visitors were
taken to the Sheriff’s Office, Strauther
told them he had shot his mother and
grandmother and “wanted us to find
those people because he couldn’t tell
anybody what he’d done,” Tims said.
Woodward’s testimony was similar,
but she said she and Tims had visited the
house four or five times.
Dr. Aurelio Espinola, Harris County
Deputy Medical Examiner, said autopsies revealed each of the victims was
killed by a shot to their heads fired from
a .380-caliber pistol.
Sgt. Pat Roberts of the Sheriff’s Criminal Identification Bureau said Deputy
Herb Boykin found a .380-caliber pistol in a barbecue pit outside the house.
Ballistic tests revealed the bullet that
killed White was fired from that gun,
according to C.E. Anderson, a firearms
examiner from the Houston Police Department.
A.C. Hilliard said White had come
to his house on February 9th to call an
ambulance for her mother, who she said
was bleeding from the head.
James Harris, a paramedic for the
Central Emergency Medical Service,
testified that on their arrival, a man met
them outside the home and said the
ambulance was not needed. This man
matched Strauther’s general description, but Harris could not identify him.
Al Ford, manager of the grocery store
where White was employed, said Strauther had come in on two or three occasions to pick up his mother’s check, and
had also accompanied White to an employee Christmas party. He said Strauther was “always real nice.”
In his closing statement, Crenshaw
told the jury that the evidence “cries
out” for a capital murder conviction in
“the senseless murder of two people.”
Although the defense was not claiming Strauther was innocent, the evidence
was “real thin” in some regards, Sharp
said. He called Tims’ and Woodward’s
testimony “shaky,” and said they had
been coached.
Sharp also criticized the investigators’
failure to obtain a search warrant and accused them of exaggerating the brutality
of the murders in an effort to bias the
jury against the defendant. The evidence
failed to meet the test of a capital murder, he said.
Mapel said minor discrepancies in the
testimony should not sidetrack the jury
because “the evidence is clear.”
The jury of seven women and five
men deliberated for three hours before
returning a guilty verdict.
During the punishment phase, Lisa
Reed of the Brazoria County Adult Probation Office said Strauther was convicted on two counts of theft from pizza
delivery men in Brazosport at age 17.
He was sentenced to 12 months deferred adjudication, fined $250, ordered
to pay $100 in restitution and to perform
100 hours of community service, she
said.
Two police officers, Freeport Sgt. Earl
Joe Shoemake and Cecil Knox of Lake
Jackson , described Strauther as cooperative and polite during those arrests.
While on probation, Strauther was accused of cruelty to animals but was not
charged. Kelli Copeland, who witnessed
the incident, said Strauther picked up a
cat belonging to her mother and brother
and carried it to a yard where a pit bulldog was chained.
He teased the dog, making it angry
and terrifying the cat, and threw the
cat into the yard, she said, and the dog
“grabbed the cat around the stomach
and kept biting it.” She said Strauther
never apologized or exhibited signs of
remorse, merely “standing there with a
smirk on his face.”
Dr. James Grigson, a forensic psychologist from Dallas , testified that
based on a hypothetical case posed by
prosecutors he was asked to determine
whether the escalation of criminal activities and antisocial behavior hypothesized would pose a continuing threat to
society.
The information presented to him indicated that this type of person would
continue to kill in the future, he said. In
his cross-examination of Grigson, Sharp
emphasized that Grigson had never interviewed the defendant and had been
given only the prosecution’s side of the
case.
Several teachers and administrators
from both Brazoswood and Brazosport
high schools testified that Strauther was
an average student who worked below
his ability, but had presented no problems at school aside from a few incidents of being tardy and absent.
Two of them, Sandra Antill and Sarah
Langston, said they did not believe he
presented a threat to society. Another,
Victoria Heckendorn, said she believed
he deserved another chance.
Brazosport High School Principal
Jim Phillips said, however, that during
Strauther’s two years at that school he
was an “average to low average” student
who was disciplined several times for
being tardy or disruptive in class.
He once threatened to kill a teacher,
Phillips said, but the threat was not taken seriously, because such threats are
often made by angry children.
The jury deliberated for almost four
hours before assessing Strauther’s sentence at life imprisonment.
Mapel told journalists after the trial
that although nine jurors voted for the
death penalty, the other three voted for a
life sentence.
This may have been because they
were not convinced Strauther would
continue to pose a threat to society, Mapel said, but he felt Strauther’s age, 19,
was a major factor in the decision.
Given the lack of unanimity, Strauther could not be executed, Mapel said,
and would be eligible for parole in 15
years,
Although notice of appeal was filed
by Strauther’s attorneys on November
2, 1989, it was withdrawn on February
12, 1990. If the Court of Appeals had reversed the trial court’s decision and the
case was retried, Strauther could again
have faced the death penalty.
Sharp said he had filed the appeal to
gain time to research the law and decided the danger was too great to risk
appeal.

SANTA FE - Tom Dendy of Santa Fe
has worked as a volunteer firefighter
since he was a teenager and as a police
officer in Galveston County for many
years. Many remember him because
of his involvement in the police academies at Galveston and Alvin Community College .
For the past twelve years, Tom has

Stress Management (CISM) Team,
Tom Dendy
and has responded to numerous critical
events involving emergency personnel.
Following 911, Tom went to New York and volunteered to work with 911

Tom recently had surgery for a “routine” problem which almost proved
fatal. During his hospital stay, he lost his medical insurance, and continues
to require care and additional surgery will be needed.

Scheduled Execution: March 2, 2010
Sigala, Michael Adam
TDCJ Number 999397
Hispanic born 12/11/1977
Education Level 10
Native of: Tarrant Texas
On August 22, 2000 in Plano, Texas
Sigala shot and killed a 27 year old Hispanic man, then sexually assaulted his
25 year old Hispanic wife before he
shot and killed her.
Sigala took several items of jewelry from the home
of the victims and
later pawned the
stolen items. Michael Adam Sigala
Sigala’s accomplice was not charged.
Scheduled Execution: Mar. 11, 2010
Joshua Maxwell
White man born May 17, 1978
Education: 10th grade
Occupation: Laborer
Native of Marion County, Indiana
The execution date for Joshua Maxwell, age 31, has been set for March 11,
2010. The execution date was set by
186th District Court Judge Maria “Tessa” Herr. Maxwell was represented by
his defense counsel
and he appeared via
video teleconference.
Maxwell was convicted by a jury in
March of 2002 of
Capital Murder and
sentenced to death Joshua Maxwell
for the murder of off
duty Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Rudolfo Lopes. Lopes was murdered on or
about October 11, 2000, during a crosscountry crime spree by Maxwell and his
female accomplice, Tessie McFarland
and his body was dumped behind a strip
mall. He had been released from an Indiana prison only seven months earlier
on parole after serving time for theft.
Maxwell and McFarland also murdered another victim, Mr. Robbie Botts,
in Indiana . At the time of the offense
and trial, the case received significant
media attention because of the national
manhunt for the killers that ended with
their apprehension after a running gun
battle and high speed chase with police
in downtown San Francisco, California.
The two killers have been referred to as
a modern day Bonnie and Clyde , and as
the Natural Born Killers, a reference to
a 1994 Quentin Tarantino movie.
McFarland, age 30, entered a guilty
plea and received a life sentence on
June 4, 2003 for her part in the Capital
Murder of Lopes.
Scheduled Execution: Mar. 30, 2010
Franklin DeWayne Alix
Black man born August 6, 1975
Education level: 10th Grade
Occupation: Unknown
Native of: Harris County, Texas
In the early morning hours of Jan.3,
1998, Franklin Alix shot and killed
Eric Bridgeford while in the course of
committing aggravated sexual assault,
robbery and burglary against his sister,
Karyl Bridgeford. After he kidnapped
and raped her he forced her to return
to her apartment and load his car with
two televisions, one
VCR and stereo
equipment.
When the victim
came home, Alix
chased him down
and shot him one
time in the back,
Franklin DeWayne
killing him.
Alix
Alix admitted to
robbing Karyl and forcing her into the
trunk of his car but claimed that the
sexual intercourse was consensual, the
items taken were gifts, and the homicide
was in self-defense.
Alix also claimed to have been coerced
into robbing Karyl by Kevin Smith, a
man who allegedly threatened to kill
Alix if he did not pay a drug debt.
Along with other evidence presented
at trial, the prosecution introduced the
testimony of Dr. Delbert Wayne Van
Dusen, of the Harris County Medical
Examiner’s Office, who performed the
autopsy of Eric. The parties debate the
significance of certain circumstances
surrounding an investigation of the
Examiner’s Office and Dr. Van Dusen’s
licensing.
During the sentencing phase of the trial, the State produced evidence of Alix’s
lengthy and violent criminal history. The
State also introduced testimony from the
widow of one of Alix’s victims, Gregorio Ramirez, who identified Alix as the
shooter in her husband’s homicide. A
piece of bloody gauze recovered from
the scene of this crime was also admitted into evidence.
Testing initially indicated that Alix’s
DNA was present on the gauze. This
finding was later proved inconclusive
and became the basis for the dismissal
without prejudice of Alix’s first federal
habeas petition. Alix was convicted of
capital murder on September 2, 1998
and sentenced to death.

Buckshot...Cont. from pg 1
of $6,500 was raised and Buckshot had
the name of every donor painted on the
aircraft.
If you listened to the radio in El
Campo, did that make you a Kulprit?
Long before "America's Most
Wanted," KULP Radio in El Campo
gave Buckshot an early morning 15
minute "program" six days a week,
where he would tell individuals with
warrants to turn themselves in. Many
did. Talk about a wake-up call. "It's 6
am, 56 degrees and John Johnson, if
you're listening, don't make me come
get you!"
"Buckshot" Lane
Buckshot had his shoot-outs to be sure.
One left his car riddled with 52 bullet holes and his hat with another. His
adversary was taken to the hospital and
as Buckshot said; "never got over it."
Early in his career, Buckshot carried
a Luger pistol, but after having three
bullets go "clean through" a suspect,
he switched to a .45 for more stopping
power.
Buckshot made every important
national magazine. Life, Time and The
Saturday Evening Post all carried stories about or by Buckshot. He was
in great demand as a speaker and the
Wharton County Historical Museum
has his typewritten schedule for several
of his speaking tours.
He cut it pretty close. Often he barely
had time to get a drink of water on his
trip from the bus station to the stage. He
once took the Highway Patrol up on their
offer to deliver him to an engagement.
As busy as he was, he was photographed typing out "Deputy
"Buckshot" Lane, Photos Courtesy Wharton
County Historical Museum
Applications" for two Wharton boys
who appeared to be about 10 years old.
Although the photo was surely posed,
it's easy to imagine Mr. Lane taking the
time to do such a thing. Buckshot also
wrote a column for the Houston Post
newspaper.
Mr. Lane's son still resides in the City
of Wharton, where he is a CPA.
We could easily write more on this
one-of-a-kind character, but space is
limited. For further information on
"Buckshot" look in your library for
"Texas High Sheriffs" by Thad Sitton,
Texas Monthly Press.
Information for this article was
obtained from the friendly and efficient
staff of the Wharton County Historical
Museum.

TEXAS CITY - Amanda Jones was on
duty as a jailer at the Texas City Jail on
April 23, 2003 when she instructed inmate Telly Wayne Fury to get into his
cell. At that, the prisoner became infuriated, picked Jones up, threw her into
the cell, pinned her against the wall, and
choked her to the point that she could
not breathe.
Jones tried to get her radio to call for
help, but Fury knocked it out of her
hand. She couldn’t breathe because Fury’s arm was around her throat, and she
thought she may die.
Jones pleaded with Fury to stop, and
told him she had children. Fury continued his assault and pushed her against
the cell door and sexually assaulted her.
Ultimately, after she assured Fury that
she would not tell anyone of the assault,
he let her go and she called for assis-
tance and escaped
from the cell.
In 2004 a jury
in State District
Court in Galveston found Fury
guilty of Aggravated Assault on
a Police Officer
and
sentenced
Telly Wayne Fury
him to 60 years in
prison.
Fury appealed the sentence and on
February 18, 2010, the First Court of
Appeals in Houston upheld his conviction and sentence and ordered him to
serve the sentence.
Today, Telly Wayne Fury is 33-years
old. He is known in the Texas Prison
System as inmate number 01338009
and is serving his time in the McConnell Prison Unit at Beeville, Texas. His
parole eligibility date is April 22, 2022.

CORRECTION
In our December 2009 edition on the
Rogue’s Gallery page we included a
mug shot of 39-year old Laura Archer
with a caption indicting she was driving a car involved in a crash that killed
a person. Ms. Archer called to correct us
saying no one died in the wreck.
We checked with Galveston County
District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk and
was informed Archer was indicted by a
grand jury for Failure to Stop and Render Aid at the scene of an accident in
which there were injuries. There was no
death in the case.
Archer elected to accept a felony con-
viction with five years probation and 180
days in the county jail. She also took a
DWI conviction
for 180 days in
jail.
Archer was
sentenced
by
State District
Judge Lonnie
Cox.
We apologize
to Ms. Archer
for our error.

To the guy who tried to mug
me the other night
I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I
hand over, shortly after you pulled the
knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my
girlfriend’s purse and earrings. I can
only hope that you somehow come
across this rather important message.
First, I’d like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn’t expect you to actually crap in your pants when I drew my
pistol after you took my jacket. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason. My girlfriend
had just bought me that Kimber Model
1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday,
and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening.. Obviously
you agree that it is a very intimidating
weapon when pointed at your head ...
isn’t it?!
I know it probably wasn’t fun walking back to wherever you’d come from
with that brown sludge in your pants.
I’m sure it was even worse walking
bare-footed since I made you leave your
shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me.
[That prevented you from calling or
running to your buddies to come help
mug us again].
After I called your mother or “Momma” as you had her listed in your cell,
I explained the entire episode of what
you’d done. Then I went and filled up
my gas tank as well as those of four
other people in the gas station, -- on
your credit card. The guy with the big
motor home took 150 gallons and was
extremely grateful!
I gave your shoes to a homeless guy
outside the Waffle House, along with all
the cash in your wallet. [That made his
day!]
I then threw your wallet into the big
pink “pimp mobile” that was parked at
the curb ... after I broke the windshield
and side window and keyed the entire
driver’s side of the car.
Later, I called a bunch of phone sex
numbers from your cell phone. Ma Bell
just now shut down the line, although I
only used the phone for a little over a
day now, so what ‘s going on with that?
Earlier, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA’s office and
one to the FBI, while mentioning President Obama as my possible target.
The FBI guy seemed really intense and
we had a nice long chat (I guess while
he traced your number etc.).
In a way, perhaps I should apologize
for not killing you ... but I feel this type
of retribution is a far more appropriate
punishment for your threatened crime. I
wish you well as you try to sort through
some of these rather immediate pressing
issues, and can only hope that you have
the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path you’ve
chosen to pursue in life. Remember, next
time you might not be so lucky. Have a
good day!
Thoughtfully yours,
Alex

society makes for a more civil society!
