Welcome back, Queen’s Alumni! Queen’s University is hosting Homecoming 2015 starting from Friday, October 23 until Sunday, October 25. On Saturday, join Queen’s Alumni’s bands as they parade their way through campus and the University District to the football game at Richardson Stadium. Alumni participating in the parade to the football game at Richardson Stadium will be welcomed by Correctional Service Canada and Tim Hortons by treated to a coffee served up by the J.E. Agnew Tim Hortons Truck! Watch for the Tims truck and the United Way tent at the corner of Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd and Union Street in the Correctional Service Canada parking lot! LAST CALL FOR NEXT GEN POOL PARTY TEAM REGISTRATIONS With only a few short days left until the second annual Next Gen Pool Party, it’s time to register your team! Join Next Gen for the Next Gen Pool Party on Friday, October 23, 2015, 1pm to 5pm at Raxx Bar & Grill. This 8 ball tournament will pit teams against each other in a double eliminations tournament in support of the United Way KFLA. Join the event on our Facebook. www.unitedwaykfla.ca 1 Issue #_ #16– –Month October 21, 2015 _, 2012 GET YOUR STARLIGHT FILM FESTIVAL TICKETS Cineplex Odeon Gardiners Road Cinemas and United Way KFLA are teaming up once again to host the 12th annual Starlight Film Festival on Saturday, November 7, from 12:30am to 6:30am. The event will welcome high school students ages 13 to 19 for a night of entertainment with all proceeds supporting the United Way. campaign, and have raised $2,800 already in special events! Watch for more exciting updates surrounding their annual Auction! Way to go, ECC Mark Riley! Workplace Events • Hotel Dieu Hospital is officially half-way through their campaign, and held a Jelly Bean Guessing Contest to win a great prize pack on October 15! On top of the ongoing great events, delicious fresh baked bread is being sold in the cafeteria every Friday in support of United Way – way to go, ECCs Leanne and Eugene! Tickets can be purchased at participating high schools, Cineplex Odeon Gardiners Road Cinemas and the United Way office. Students attending the event will require photo identification (student card) or proof of high school status. • Viviane Pelletier, a staff from Admission will be from 12:30am to 1:30am students under 18 years of age must remain inside until 6:30am. If a student wishes to leave before the completion of the event, a supervisor on duty will contact parents and arrange for safe transportation. The Starlight Film Festival is sponsored by Scotiabank. We’ve got all the latest Campaign news for you! Ready for Kick-off • KFL&A Public Health had a Kick-off BBQ on October 14. They served up all sorts of delicious fare including bison 2 off their campaign on October 19. An agency speaker will be speaking to their team this Monday and be sure to stay tuned for details of their annual On-Air Auction coming up in November. Way to Go, ECC Jacquie! • Assurant kicked of their With an admittance price of $20 cash per ticket, the event will feature five movies and include a free hotdog, unlimited fountain pop*, popcorn and arcade games. (*Students must keep their cup for refills). The movie list, specially selected by high school students, includes The Internship, Insidious 2, Now You See Me, We Bought a Zoo and Divergent. CAMPAIGN NEWS • Bell Media Kingston kicked burgers, turkey sausages, lamb burgers, water buffalo burgers, and more! Way to go, ECC Ed! • Corporation of the County of Frontenac kicked off their campaign with the Warden’s BBQ and an agency speaker on October 15, and are having agency speakers in to continue to run with the momentum and success of their campaign! Way to Go ECC Angelique! Issue #16 – October 21, 2015 Royal Military College in the English Department, is organizing 5th Annual Crafts & Services Boutique for the United Way. It will be held out of her offices at RMC and the boutique is scheduled to open up from Monday this week and running for next three weeks. Make sure to drop by to check out on gorgeous artworks before they all run out! Thank you Viviane for your generous support! • A Seeing Is Believing Tour was organized for Empire Life retirees, CFB Kingston and other volunteers today. Participants got a chance to tour agencies, wrapping up with a lunch at St. Vincent de Paul Society. Thanks to Shawn and the team at McCoy Bus tours for your support! • Goodyear organized a Pool Tournament today and there will be another tournament for a different crew on October 27 in support of United Way! Way to Go ECCs Tom and Steve for continually upping your game! will be participating! Thank you OPS!! • The weather is getting cold but these warm-hearted volunteers are keeping everyone stay warm! Novelis Neighbour Project has launched on Monday and Novelis volunteers are working very hard to make St. Vincent de Paul a better place. They will be working on turning a shed into a storage, and kitchen-lunch room & bathroom renovations. Thank you all for all the hard work! • CORCAN is holding a BBQ tomorrow! Way to go, Canvasser Lead Annette! • TransAlta is holding a Chili Fest tomorrow on Wolfe Island! Thank you Judy and the gang for all of your support and hard work! • Family and Children’s Services of FL&A had a mini-golf competition running this week – course is set up in their office. Staff also made candy-grams today to prepare for their upcoming Halloween event on October 26! • Empire Life is already wrapping up their campaign! Employees will gather together and celebrate this year’s ‘Pump It Up’ themed Campaign Touchdown with BBQ on Tuesday, October 27. Way to go, ECC Jordan and Ryan! • CFB Kingston runs an amazing campaign every year with 39 units on base running employee campaigns. Additionally they have agency speakers and volunteer opportunities. Halloween Is Coming • Halloween is here already at the Home Base Housing! They had a Halloween Costume Contest today. Can’t wait to see the winner’s costume! • A group of volunteers from CFB Kingston will be at the St. Vincent de Paul helping to prepare the meal for the agency’s clients during lunchtime – From Tuesday to Thursday this week. • Kingston General Hospital has been hot on the campaign trail this year including a Canvasser training session that included a custom Seeing is Believing tour! Thank you Shannon Graham, and ECC Crystal Huntley and the KGH Committee for all of your hard work and coordination! KGH has agency speakers coming into several department meetings! • Ontario Public Service is running a Walk and Run for United Way on Friday, October 30 from noon and 2pm on the grounds of the Beechgrove Complex. Their goal is $200,000 and they are almost at $50,000! Register your team today. Watch for local OPS UW folks like Sergiy Kolosov, Richard Carr, Gillian Dagg-Foster and some of your other OPS colleagues who 3 • KEDCO is organizing a Pumpkin Judging on October 26 for Halloween! Staff will be carving pumpkins to enter the competition and those artsy pumpkins will be sale for upcoming Halloween Day. Can’ wait to see how pumpkins turn out! • Boys and Girls Club is hosting a Fright Night on Friday, October 30 at the Boys and Girls Club on 1300 Bath Road, Frontenac Mall from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. Make sure to wear your scariest costume and creep through their haunted house! Also, don’t miss out the Cake Walk at 7:30pm! Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are on sale now and admission is $10 per family. Issue #16 – October 21, 2015 • CFB Kingston and RMC’s Annual Troll Toll is coming back for Halloween Day! On Friday, October 30, volunteers will greet you at the gates to the Garrison collecting loose change to help support the United Way Campaign. Help them beat last year’s record of over $3,000! The Results Are In • Loving Spoonful staff and board members held a fundraiser at Tir Nan Og donations every time they ordered a glass of beer. Thanks to Mara and the folks of Loving Spoonful for your ingenious and generous fundraising. • Novelis has raised over $20,000 so far! Way to go, ECC Vivian Yorke, and all of the Novelis team! • Stantive Technologies Group Inc. raised over $6,700 total. Way to go, ECC Lindsay! • ALCDSB is half way through their campaign right now. They have raised over $13,500 so far. Almost there! Way to go, ECC Patricia! • E. I. du Pont Canada has raised $18,000 from employee giving! Way to go, ECCs Kim and Tammy! • K3C raised over $300 so far through their special events! Staff are taking turns and organizing Dine & Donate during lunchtime. Way to go, team! • Joyceville Institution raised over $10,000 from employee giving. Way to go, team! • Empire Life employees handed out SimplyWell juice samples in exchange for clothing donations to Lunch by George and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston, and they had a special sports-themed casual day that collected over $320. The event is taking place in Kingston on the beautiful grounds of the Beechgrove Complex from noon until 2pm. CITY OF KINGSTON SPIN-A-THON Saturday, October 31, 9am to 11am The City of Kingston wants you to spin for your community. They’re holding a spin-a-thon at the INVISTA Centre from 9am to 11am. QUEEN’S SCIENCE FORMAL OPEN HOUSE Saturday, November 7 On Saturday, November 7, Queen’s Engineering students invite you to visit their annual Science Formal Open House. The Engineering students never fail to amaze guests with their creativity.
