ExamView Pro Creating Assessments: When you open ExamView
ExamView Pro Creating Assessments: To access ExamView Pro you need to open Teacher Apps and then the folder labeled ExamView. The four programs listed below are in the folder. Pro: is the test creator Import: allows you to import questions you have created into ExamView Manager: allows you to setup tests for use in player Player: allows students to take tests on the network
When you open ExamView Pro this is the opening screen. You can choose from several different options. If you are creating assignments such as essays or discussion questions you will want to create a new test from scratch otherwise you would want to use the test wizard to choose questions from the question banks. You can also use the Import to create your own question banks. 1. Creating a new test using a wizard Once you name your test you will then need to select the question bank(s) you want to pull from we have the following banks in Teacher Apps. You may also have some banks in your c: drive. You can see here where I have opened an English bank and found a summative test with 14 questions. I can also go back and add more tests to the list of questions I can pull from.
The next step is to select the number and type of questions you want to use. Once you do this you will get a summary of your questions, all you need to do is click finish.
Once you click finish you will see that ExamView has created your test. You have several options on how you are going to give the test, from printing it to giving it online. At the bottom of the test you will see the answer guide and associated learning objectives. This is the easiest way to create a test from built question banks but it is not the only way. Creating a test from scratch allows you to customize the test with questions you create or a mixture of your questions and ExamView banks. 2. Creating a new test from scratch If you decide to create a new test the first step is to name your test. Once you have done that you can then begin to build your test. To add questions you will go to question/new and then select a question type. As you can see there are several different types of questions which allows you to use ExamView as a way to give also students homework assignments, essays, math problems etc… This makes ExamView for more usable. This box will come up when you try to create new questions. You will want to create the questions in a bank if you wanted to use them on other tests. You can also click to no longer show this message.
Here is the question input screen. You type in the question and answer choice for multiple choice or just question for other types. A rationale can be just a period if you do not want a lengthy explanation, you will have to read to grade it anyway. You need to determine the answer and you can mix up the questions. The last thing is to record the question. You will also notice you can reading passages to your questions. This is the screen when you create an essay question. Because you can create questions with narrative you could create a Document Based Question which is used in several of the A.P Exams. You can also add pictures or equations to the questions, which allows you to further customize your questions.
In creating a test from scratch you can still use questions from the banks as well. When you click on Select in ExamView you will several choices for adding questions. Randomly will select questions from a bank you select but the best way to insert questions is to use While Viewing to pick the questions you want to add to your test. To alter the format and layout of the tests you create you can go to edit and preferences. Preferences will allow you to make many different changes to the structure of your test. You will see that you can alter the entire layout of the test and even how many points’ questions are worth. The final step is to save the test and give it, whether it be online, printed out, or in the ExamView player. Online test instructions are the next topic and testing in ExamView Player will follow.
ExamView Online: Once you have created an assignment in ExamView you can put it online for students to take and results to be emailed to you. You do not just have to put tests though. Everyday homework assignments can also be created and placed online. Assessments such as discussion questions, essays, test reviews reading comprehension can be placed online. The first step is to go to File and then Export and choose HTML. This is the next screen you will see in ExamView Pro. You can rename the Title if you want and then you must decide its use. Study guides are not emailed whereas if you export it as a test it will email you the results. Any type of graded assignment will be selected as a test
The first time you place something online you will need to enter your email address. You not have to do so again though. You will need to enter a formal name which will be the subject of the emailed results.
You will want to save it to a folder in your local webpage called ExamView. Then you can upload the entire file to the server without having to upload individuals. It will not overwrite anything unless you specifically ask it to. The next step is to open Dreamweaver and upload the ExamView file. To do this first click the plugin Next click on the ExamView file and click the up arrow. This will place the assignment on the remote server. The last thing to do is link the assignment like you would any other file type. Highlight the link and then drag an arrow to the ExamView file in the directory.
This is what students see when the go to the assignment. All they really need to put at the top is their name. Email is not needed unless they want feedback from you online. To give a test in the ExamView player you must first setup your classes in the Test Manager.
ExamView Manager: Creating Classes in ExamView Manager: In Teacher Apps, open ExamView Test Manager Click on Start a New Class The next screen opens where you will enter your students’ names and ID’s. If you want to make it easy, you can make an Excel file that is setup like this with each class’s information: As you can see, you have to put the student’s name in as you see it above and their ID number in. Once the file is made, it must be saved as a .csv file. Then, you will go to File/Import/Class Roster from Text and browse to your saved .csv file to import a class.
The other option is to type in each student and their ID number individually for each class. To do this, go to the ‘Add New Student’ button in the toolbar or click the menu item, ‘Student’ in the menu bar. The following window will appear allowing you to type in the information. As you can see, you do not have to put anything in some of the fields. Click ‘Next’ and you can continue putting students’ information in until that class is finished. Now, you are ready to begin adding assignments. You can do that in 3 different places—see pictures below. This button is at the bottom of the screen.
ExamView Player: Once you have your classes setup in the ExamView Test Manager you will open the ExamView Player to give students the test. Then go to file and Publish To. When click on Test Player on Lan you come to the next screen where you will want to stay with the default action. Click next and then you are ready to save your test to the network. You will then be asked to save the test, the location of the test you are saving is on the i:/Courses drive in a folder called tests This will be the default location of where you will save the test. Once the test is saved you will then be prompted to open up the test manager. If you have already created your classes open that class if not you will need to open the option to create a new class.
Once you class roster has been created in the Test Manager you can then add an assignment for the students to take. You can click here to add a new assignment and the fill out the information below. Make sure in step 2 you select the second option and then click next. Or you can select option 1 if you are using CPS. The third step is to determine your options on this screen: Here you will select the correct assignment you want to give (remember they save as .eot files for the player and then determine whether you want to allow any of the bottom options.
Step 4 is to create a password which I would suggest having a different password for each student or for each class. Step 5 is to determine if you want to set a time to take the test. I would suggest scheduling the lab and giving the test to all students or use the cps to give to prevent students from taking it at different times. The next step is to determine if you want to create a time limit for the test and whether you want to scramble the tests for each student. Suggested
You can then determine whether they may check their response and if they are shown an end of test response. I would suggest not doing either of these so that information cannot be given to students who have yet to take the test.
The last screen will show you the settings for the assignment you created and this last section, which is very important. ***This references where the test will need to be placed for them to take it. Here is what I suggest, if you are giving the test in your classroom using your 5 student computers then just save the test to the desktop. If it is for a large class that you will be using the lab you can email me and I will save the test in Student Apps so that they can take it. *** ADMINISTERING YOUR EXAMVIEW TEST VIA EXAMVIEW PLAYER: Schedule a day in the lab to administer your test. Students will go to Student Apps and open ExamView Player. Students will need to put their name and ID number in the empty fields. Students may need to navigate to the correct folder to access the test assigned to them by double‐clicking on the ExamView Test folder at the bottom of the window. Now, they must double‐click on the Department folder and select XXXXX (Teacher) folder.
Now, the test you’ve assigned should be in the window. (If this is not the first test you’ve assigned, there will be several tests in the list and you will need to direct them to the correct file.) Next, they will put in the password you gave this test and at the next screen, ask the student to verify he is that person. The student is ready to begin PULLING TEST RESULTS Open up ExamView Test Manager. (Found in Teacher Apps.)
Open an Existing Class. Choose the class that took the test out of the ‘Classes’ folder. Notice that in the recently taken assignment/test column, there are no grades???!!! You will need to select ‘Get results from LAN Test’ in the toolbar. Notice that now there should be results in that column, but they are in points and you want to see percentages.
Click on the ‘Toggle between points and percentages’ button. Now, you are ready to run a report; there are plenty to choose from with lots of options for each report. Play with them to see which best suits your needs!
