Compliments of:
WELCOME TO
BEAUTIFUL LAS VEGAS!
Relocation Guide
Each month, visitors and
new residents flock to Las
Vegas to enjoy its warm
climate, fabulous resorts,
unparalleled entertainment,
southwestern lifestyle and
economic prosperity.
Because tourism adds up
to nearly one-third of the
state’s annual tax revenue,
business owners are not
subject to corporate income
tax or franchise, inventory
or unitary taxes. Residents
pay no personal income
tax. The minimal tax burden
means Nevadans can keep
more of the money they
earn. U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Analysis Bureau ranks Las Vegas as the top metro area for income
per capita, with an annual growth rate of 2.3%.
If you are planning to relocate, Las Vegas should be at the top of your list of desirable locations. The Greater Las
Vegas Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome - inviting you to get to know our residents, become
involved in commerce and call Las Vegas home.
Once considered a
famed resort, solely
for the purpose of
entertainment
and
gaming, Las Vegas has
rapidly developed to
become a positive
community adapting to
the needs of all family
life. Home to two of
the nations top master
planned communities;
Summerlin and Green
Valley. With its growing economy, low overall taxes, and favorable
cost of living, the population of Clark County continues to climb
each month. Currently, Clark County is home to nearly 2 million
(1.6) people. This population growth continues to make Clark
County one of the fastest growing counties in the country.
LOCATION:
Las Vegas is in the County Seat of Clark County, Nevada and has
the official elevation of 2,174 feet above sea level. Las Vegas is 290
miles northeast of Los Angeles, 378 miles northwest of Phoenix,
and 447 miles south of Reno.
REASONS FOR MOVING TO LAS VEGAS:
People relocate to Las Vegas from all over the country. The majority
of those relocating, an astounding 38.6%, are from California. The
top reasons why people are moving to Las Vegas are:
37.5%....Job Transfer
13.9%….Find a Better Job
10.5%….For a Better Life-Style

Driver’s License
New residents have 30 days to obtain a
Nevada driver’s license. In order to obtain
a license, you must pay a fee (fees vary);
all applicants must take a vision test.
Other tests will be waived if you are 25
years old or older and have no special
restrictions; your out-of-state license is
valid and you are applying for the same
class of license; and/or you have no more
than two moving violations and no suspensions, revocations, cancellations, or
denials in the past four years. If you do
not meet these requirements, you will
have to take a written test and possibly
a skills test.
All license applications are checked
through the national Problem Driver
Pointer System. Nevada does not automatically transfer all motorcycle endorsements. Commercial driver’s licenses can
be transferred at Full Service Offices if
the driver meets the above requirements
and has a current DOT (Department of
Transportation) physical form. Make sure
that you bring proof of your Social Security card, W-2 form, or payroll check and
proof of your name and age (e.g., current
drivers license, certified copy of birth certificate, passport, or immigration document).
Insurance Requirements
In Nevada, vehicle owners are required
to carry liability insurance. The minimum
requirements are $15,000 bodily injury,
$30,000 per person per accident, and
$10,000 property damage. Proof of insurance must be kept in the vehicle at all
times.
Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles
(DMV)
Nevada DMV offices provide booklets
of Nevada driving laws, rules, and regulations. Voter registration is also offered
at the time you apply for or renew your
driver’s license.

The park is available for day use only.

Historic Spring Mountain Ranch is located within the Red Rock
Canyon National Conservation Area, beneath the colorful cliffs of

courses are offered in organizational

Charter Schools
In 1997, the state legislature passed laws
allowing for the formation of charter
schools in the State of Nevada. Although
sponsored by the local school district,
charter schools maintain their own board
of directors and operate independent of
the district’s policies and regulations.
Charter schools are required to abide
by state and county laws, but are given
a great deal of latitude in the day-to-day
operation of the school. The purpose of
such alternative education is to improve
education via a setting where innovation,
experimentation and research can identify
effective methods of instruction and then
share those findings with more traditional
classroom programs.

Hidden Ways to Help your Heart!
The good news about heart disease is that a healthy heart is within everyone’s reach. You already know some
of the rules: Consume less fat; Eat fruits and vegetables; and keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels in
check. But there are more ways to boost heart health, including some you probably didn’t know:
1. Don’t skip breakfast. Fact: Most heart attacks occur between 7 a.m. and noonpossibly because the cells that help blood to clot, called platelets, are stickiest
then. Eating breakfast appears to make platelets less sticky...and less likely to clump
together and block a vital artery.
2. Cut sweets. Sugar is not directly related to heart disease. But cutting back limits empty
calories in your diet and helps leave room for heart-friendly fiber and nutrients.
3. Meet the “Bs.” You may have heard about the “antioxidants” - Vitamins C, E and beta carotene,
which appear to slow plaque formation in the arteries. Now there’s evidence that folic acid, vitamin B, and
vitamins B6 and B12 may help prevent heart attacks. You’ll get all three “Bs” from a balanced diet.

TRANSPORTATION & COMMUNICATION
MONORAIL
Las Vegas Monorail Company
3900 Paradise Rd., #260 Las Vegas, NV 89169
699-8200
www.lvmonorail.com
It began as a joint venture between
the MGM Grand and Bally’s Hotel. Why
not create a one-mile transportation
system between the hotels, encouraging
visitorship to both? It was an exciting,
forward-thinking idea that took off in
1993 and soon included plans to expand
to other locations along the Strip. In 1997,
state legislature passed that enabled the
private monorail company to own, operate,
and charge a fare as a public monorail
system. As expansion plans developed, the
Monorail assembled a professional team
that included Bombardier Transportation,
Carter- Burgess, Gensler & Associates,
Granite Construction Company, Liaise
Corporation, Salomon Smith Barney
and Transit Systems Management. The
original monorail system was acquired in
2000 by the nonprofit Las Vegas Monorail
Company, formed to develop, own and
operate the Las Vegas Monorail.
No public money was needed and no
future taxpayer money obligation is
planned. The Las Vegas Monorail Company
board of directors is made up of five
members appointed by the Governor of
Nevada.
Today, the Las Vegas Monorail remains the
first and only privately owned public
transportation system in the U.S. and
includes seven stations along its fourmile route. Nearly 32,000 passengers ride
the system daily to restaurants, shows,
attractions and conventions within the
Strip resort corridor.

many features of rail service with the
cost and flexibility of a bus, making it an
effective transportation solution.
The MAX project, included as a National

AIR TRANSPORTATION
Las Vegas’ convention, tourism, and
entertainment industries, together
with unparalleled outdoor recreation,
have stimulated phenomenal growth
in Southern Nevada.
Today, nearly half of all Las Vegas visitors
arrive by air, via McCarran International
Airport, making it a major driving force in
the Southern Nevada economy and one of
the busiest airports in the world. Income
derived from aviation activity generates
significant economic benefits estimated at
25 billion dollars a year. In addition to these
tangible benefits, McCarran is a valuable
community asset that links Southern
Nevada to the national air transportation
system and brings the world to Las Vegas.
In a city that thrives on tourism, it’s
become increasingly important to provide
travelers a positive first and last impression
of Las Vegas by achieving that delicate
balance between security and customer
service. Whether busy meeting the
needs of today’s traveler, or preparing for
tomorrow’s, the Department of Aviation
is proud of it’s ongoing efforts to achieve
that objective by building and maintaining
state-of-the-art facilities, maximizing
existing resources, and capitalizing on
new and innovative technology.
McCarran International Airport

To meet the demands of Southern
Nevada’s growth, in terms of both local
residents and the Valley’s visitors, the
Clark County Department of Aviation
(CCDOA) has plans to increase the size and
capacity of its existing McCarran Airport
facilities and develop an entirely new
supplemental airport facility. In calendar
year 2011, McCarran International Airport
handled over 41 million passengers. This
puts McCarran in the top 5 busiest airports
in the United States.
Henderson Executive Airport

To help meet the growing demand for
aviation facilities and services in Southern
Nevada, the Clark County Department of
Aviation invested more than $30 million
in Henderson Executive Airport to create
a premier corporate aviation facility and
an attractive, convenient and economical
alternative to McCarran International
Airport. The facilities at HND are tailored to
the discriminating general aviation pilot
and corporate client. As a primary reliever
airport to busy McCarran, HND provides
all the necessary services and amenities to
make your trip pleasant and convenient.
Boulder City Municipal Airport

Boulder City Municipal Airport has two
runways, plus one shorter runway to
accommodate glider traffic. Two Grand
Canyon tour operators are based here,
as well as a flight school. There are
approximately 55 private planes. Eighty
more hangars are now under construction.

The airfield has the capacity and runway
length to meet the needs of virtually all
general aviation aircraft, saving precious
time and money for those choosing HND.
A beautifully appointed terminal building
opened on June 13, 2006, providing a
seamless transition between aircraft and
ground transportation. A new standalone
air traffic control tower and 95 new private
aircraft storage hangars have also been
placed into service.
Directly adjacent to the Gold Strike Hotel
& Casino, Jean Airport has two runways,
primarily employed in skydiving, glider, and
acrobatic activities. There is also a paved
ramp for 50 aircraft as well as a 6,000-squarefoot special events building. The airport is
located 20 miles south of Las Vegas on I-15.

“Over time, more and more aircrafts,
cars and travelers have battled for space
within an airport whose initial developers
never envisioned a time when more than
40 million passengers would become an
annual norm. With 1.9 million square feet
divided over three levels, McCarran’s new
terminal, T3, is a massive facility. Its spacious
eight-mile roadway system was designed
to efficiently move motor vehicles in and
out while an eight story, 6,000-space
garage will fulfill parking needs for decades.
To increase efficiency and reduce waiting
times, travelers at T3 will also enjoy some
of the airline industry’s latest technologies
such as self-boarding equipment and selfservice baggage tagging to ease the checkin process for participating air carriers.
These improved measures will support
added growth within Southern Nevada’s
tourism industry.”
North Las Vegas Airport
2730 Airport Dr., Ste 101, NLV • 261-3800
Located less than six miles from
Downtown and the Las Vegas Strip, North
Las Vegas Airport is an ideal alternative
to busy McCarran International with firstclass facilities tailored to meet the needs
of the general aviation pilot.

Originally established in 1947, the airport
was built to provide an emergency landing
area for aircraft departing Nellis Air Force
Base. Perkins Field is named for two local
young men, Woodruff and Elwood Perkins,
who were killed in World Wars I and II,
respectively.
Sporting a 4,800-foot, uncontrolled, paved
runway, with a pilot-activated runway
lighting system, Perkins Field is located
approximately 70 miles northeast of Las
Vegas, just minutes from Lake Mead’s
Overton Beach in the picturesque Moapa
Valley. Ancient Anasazi ruins are easily
accessible at the nearby Lost City Museum
and the Valley of Fire State Park is located
just a short drive away.
