The Ronald McDonald House has become so
many things to so many people that when I
proudly tell folks I am the Executive Director of
the Las Vegas House, just about everyone has a
personal story they want to share. I, too, want to
share one of my own family’s precious memories
of the Ronald McDonald House. It was Christmas
Eve twelve years ago when my sister, a singlemom, was a guest at the Ronald McDonald House
near Shriner’s Hospital in Philadelphia. My then
5-year old niece, Sydney, was undergoing medical
treatment for a rare spinal tumor. After spending
an evening with the other families feasting on turkey with trimmings,
unwrapping presents, and singing Christmas carols, it was time to retire to
their room for the night. Sydney was playing with her new Barbie doll she had
just received from Santa earlier that evening, when she looked up at my sister
with big blue eyes and a wide grin and happily announced, “Mommy, I guess
I’m kinda lucky to have cancer, because if I didn’t we wouldn’t be here at the
Ronald McDonald House!”
My sister later told me she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that
moment, but just the realization that her daughter was happy and that they
would always share that wonderful memory, even during the toughest time of
their lives, was all that mattered. Sydney is now a happy, healthy high school
senior looking forward to college next year.
As we all prepare to embrace a new year, I want to thank our generous donors,
loyal sponsors, and dedicated volunteers for helping us make it through
the economic challenges of 2011. Because of all of you, Ronald McDonald
Charities House will be able to provide our much-needed services and
programs to an even greater number of children and their families in 2012.
As the new Executive Director, I look forward to 2012 with a renewed sense of
purpose and commitment to helping all of the families who come through our
doors every day of the year in search of compassion, shelter, and respite from
the personal storms in their lives.
With Blessings,

Mission
The best medicine for a sick child is having Mom and Dad at their
side. Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las
Vegas makes this possible by providing a “home-away-from-home”
at the Ronald McDonald House® (RMH®) for families who travel to
Las Vegas to receive critical medical treatment for their children.
In addition to the House, RMHC of Greater Las Vegas also creates
and supports programs that directly improve the health, education
and well-being of children in our community. RMHC’s programs
benefit thousands of children and families each year.
Programs
• Lunch is On Us delivers lunches to families staying with their
children at local hospitals.
• The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® provides dental care to
children in five rural Nevada counties.
• The RMHC Scholarship Program awards scholarships to
local high school seniors.
History
In 1973, Fred Hill, a football player with the Philadelphia Eagles,
had a daughter being treated for Leukemia at the Children’s
Hospital in Philadelphia. During her three years of treatment,
Fred and his wife Fran often camped out on hospital chairs and ate
makeshift meals out of vending machines. Fred rallied the support
of his Eagles teammates and the Philadelphia McDonald’s owner/
operators and together they created the very first Ronald McDonald
House, which opened its doors in 1974. Today, there are over 300
Ronald McDonald Houses in 31 countries around the world.
In Las Vegas, the community effort to establish a House involved the
Junior League of Las Vegas, local McDonald’s owner/operators and
other members of the community. In 1998, the Las Vegas Ronald
McDonald House opened its doors to its very first family.

Family Spotlight
When you look into Lilian’s big brown eyes, you cannot help but think she is an old soul. Or, maybe it is that she
has already experienced more in her four young years than most of us experience in a lifetime. A misdiagnosis
in her home country of Ethiopia led to delayed treatment for Lilian, who has Leukemia. If it weren’t for her
father’s insistence on getting an immediate second opinion here in the United States, Lilian might not even be
alive today.
Having rushed his seriously ill daughter to America, there had been no time for Lilian’s father to make plans for a
long-term stay before they arrived in Las Vegas. Sunrise Children’s Hospital referred the family to the Las Vegas
Ronald McDonald House, where Lilian’s dad says he was amazed by the warm welcome they received. “I have
never met such nice people,” her father said. “Everyone is so incredibly caring. The Ronald McDonald House
has been a true blessing for us.”
But it has not been easy for the family, whose number one priority is Lilian’s medical treatment. She is undergoing
a grueling chemotherapy protocol to attack the Leukemia that went untreated for so long. Lilian’s dad remains
at his daughter’s side full-time, while her mother stayed behind in Ethiopia to care for their two other young
children.
“Lilian misses her mom terribly, but she is so strong and so good. She never complains. She is a survivor!”
According to the family, the name Lilian means “God is my vow.” Lilian’s dad says his family’s strong faith will
see them through this challenge in their lives, and knowing they have the support of the Ronald McDonald House
staff, volunteers, and other families with them every step of the way gives the family even more peace of mind.

Volunteer Spotlight
Kohl’s Cares
Kohl’s first approached RMHC in May 2011 wanting to help once a month with our Lunch is On Us
program. We put them on the schedule to volunteer on the third Wednesday of each month, and since
then they have consistently provided at least five volunteers every month. They can be found in the
kitchen at the House in bright purple shirts preparing 120 lunches for that day’s hospital delivery.
When the first Kohl’s phone call came in, we had no idea what we were in for! Kohl’s has a program
called Kohl’s Associates in Action. When a minimum of five Kohl’s Associates volunteer at least three
consecutive hours for a qualifying nonprofit organization, the organization earns a grant of $500.
In July, the House celebrated its 13th Birthday. To commemorate the event, RMHC teamed up with
Kohl’s to host a Wish List Drive for much needed household items. The very next weekend, a birthday
party was held at the House. Kohl’s volunteers from every store in the Las Vegas area participated in
these events, raising over $8,000 for RMHC. They have also volunteered at the 5K Run in May, the
volunteer appreciation luncheon in August and the gala dinner in September.
RMHC volunteers help our staff deliver quality service and increase efficiency in operating our programs.
The Kohl’s Associates in Action mission states: “We believe that everybody has the ability to make a
difference.” And Kohl’s has certainly made a difference at the Ronald McDonald House. In less than
six months, Kohl’s Associates in Action have logged over 200 hours of volunteer time and a total of over
$14,000 has been donated to RMHC. This program not only encourages volunteerism, but also provides
much needed financial support to the organizations these volunteers help. “Because every dollar counts,
and every hand helps.” Thank you Kohl’s for your time and commitment to RMHC!

Care Mobile
In partnership with Nevada Health Center’s Miles for Smiles, RMHC launched a state-of-the-art mobile dental unit
in 2005 to provide access to dental care for under-served children in five rural counties in Nevada. To date, the
program has served over 4,700 children.
Most children seen on the Care Mobile live in very rural communities and are either uninsured or have Medicaid.
With little or no access to a dental provider and the lack of financial resources, the Care Mobile has been the only
option for many children and families. Recognizing that education is the key to prevention, the program also makes
several oral health presentations to students during the school year.
Give Kids A Smile Day
10
10
Each year, RMHC of Greater Las Vegas, Miles for Smiles and the Northeastern Nevada Coalition for Oral Health
co-sponsor a project to recognize Children’s Dental Health Month by bringing the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to
five rural Nevada communities. The Care Mobile parks at the McDonald’s restaurant in each location, and provides
children with free visual dental screenings, fluoride varnish, oral health supplies and educational information.
Local dentists in each of the communities volunteer their time to do the screenings, community health nurses in the
coalition volunteer to apply the varnish, and other coalition members and volunteers help with paperwork, patient
flow, and education efforts.
A Smile To
Be Proud Of
In the spring of 2011, the Ronald McDonald Care
Mobile visited Winnemucca, a small town just outside
of Elko, NV. On that trip, a three year old patient
made quite an impact on the entire Care Mobile staff:
“A foster child was in need of urgent dental care due
to an abscessed tooth. His three-year old face was
extremely swollen and it was apparent that he was in
pain. There were no dental providers in Winnemucca
that accepted Medicaid and the foster father was out
of town working. The little boy’s foster mother was
left with very few options, as she was unable to travel
out of town due to car trouble. “
“When she found out that the Care Mobile was going
to be in town, she immediately called to set up an
appointment for him. When they arrived, the dental
assistant took time to make the child feel at ease since
it was his first-ever dental appointment. In no time at
all, she had him smiling and comfortable so that the
dentist could evaluate his abscessed tooth.”
“The little boy felt so at ease that the team was able
to extract his severely decayed front tooth right there
on the Care Mobile. Afterwards, the assistant looked
down to find tears running down the child’s cheeks.
When asked why he was crying, he replied that it was
because he was so happy that his tooth would not be
hurting any more.”
Karl
Scholarship Recipient
Born in Togo, Africa, Koko “Karl” Kumodzi came to the United States at the age of four – full of hope and
determined to “save the world.” He graduated from Valley High School in Las Vegas in 2010 as Valedictorian
of his class, and is currently attending Stanford University, where he is studying International Relations.
Karl received a RMHC scholarship as a high school graduate in 2010 and was selected again as an alumni
recipient in 2011.
When Karl Kumodzi was 7 years old, he wanted to be a superhero. But after years of trying to fly and move
objects with his mind, Karl had to accept the painful fact that he did not have any superpowers. “In hindsight,
I realized why I wanted to be a superhero so badly,” Karl says. “Because even as a child, I wanted to change the
world rather than wait for someone else to do it.”
Now entering his sophomore year at Stanford University, Karl is well on his way to doing just that as a volunteer
and fundraiser for organizations that combat homelessness, hunger, and HIV/AIDS. Last May, Karl experienced
the opportunity of a lifetime when he was selected by PBS and American Experience to be one of 40 college
students to retrace the routes of the original 1961 Freedom Rides with some of the Freedom Riders as part of the
50th anniversary celebration.
“It was an incredible opportunity to learn from and talk to ordinary people who stood up against a Goliath in
American government at the time -- institutional racism,” says Karl. “The Freedom Riders were my age when they
went on that journey. They dropped out of school and signed their last wills and testaments before they got on the
bus. I don’t know if I would have had that kind of courage, but I’m definitely grateful they did, because I would not
have the opportunities I have today were it not for them.”
Karl says the whole experience was incredibly motivating. “It is so easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of
injustice and suffering going on in the world. But instead of being overwhelmed, the Freedom Riders maintained
a fearless idealism and challenged social injustice head on – and won! And that is what I want to do with my life.”
Scholarship Program
The RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program is a partnership
between RMHC, McDonald’s®, and local community organizations. The
program awards scholarships to students who have limited access to
career and educational opportunities, and is part of RMHC & McDonald’s
ongoing commitment to education. Each year, the program awards over
$280,000 in scholarships to high school seniors from Clark and Nye
counties in Nevada. Since the program began in 1999, over $2.4 million
in scholarships has been awarded to 1,087 students.
McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Greater Las Vegas and The Las
Vegas Review-Journal support the Scholarship Program by donating
a portion of every Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper sold at
participating McDonald’s restaurants. Scholarship applications,
terms and eligibility requirements can be found on our web site,
www.rmhlv.com. Applications are available to high school seniors in
October and due in January of each school year.

Lunch Is On Us
In an effort to help relieve the financial and emotional stress of having a child in the hospital, RMHC
volunteers prepare and deliver 600 sack lunches each week to families staying with their children at the
Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC and Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas. Since the program
began in 2004, volunteers have delivered over 130,000 lunches. In 2010 alone, 28,000 lunches reached the
hands of mothers, fathers, grandparents and family members who were at their child’s hospital bedside. In
addition to the lunches, volunteers also take toys and stuffed animals to the children being treated.
14
In Their Own Words
“It’s a stress reliever…I’m here with my 1 year old daughter, and if you
don’t want to leave your child, it’s just one less thing you have to worry
about!”
– Amber received lunches from RMHC when her daughter was at
Sunrise Children’s Hospital for respiratory issues.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of doing this – I hate missing a day!”
– Patty has been delivering lunches to families since 2006.
“It makes me feel good to know that we’re doing something to help
families in a time of crisis. If I can put a smile on their face, it’s worth
a million dollars!”
– Jeff has been delivering lunches to families since 2008.
“It’s nice to see the interaction families have with RMHC volunteers –
it gives them a sense of hope.”
– Ashley is a social worker at Sunrise Children’s Hospital.

On the first Saturday in February, RMHC volunteers set up their stations at
the entrance to each Smith’s Food & Drug Store in town and invite shoppers
to pick up items for families staying at the House as they shop. This one day
event stocks the shelves at the Las Vegas Ronald McDonald House with
enough food items, paper products, toiletries and cleaning supplies to last
the entire year. In addition to wish list items, RMHC collects thousands
of dollars in cash contributions from caring members of the community.

Runnin’ for the House 2011 | Ronald McDonald House
What a fantastic morning in May - the weather couldn’t have been better
and people everywhere had huge smiles on their faces from all of the fun!
Ronald McDonald led the runners in a pre-race warm up before Chet
Buchanan, 98.5 KLUC, kicked off the 5k run and 1mile walk. Everyone
enjoyed a delicious McDonald’s pancake breakfast, raffle with great prizes
and a family festival with face painting, balloon art and interactive learning
booths for families and kids. Runnin’ for the House 2011 was our largest
and most successful race to date with over 1,300 registered participants
helping us raise over $57,000 to support families caring for a seriously ill
child. Mark your calendars for Runnin’ for the House 2012 on

Ticket to Paradise Gala | The Renaissance Hotel
Over 300 guests escaped to paradise at the 13th Annual Gala Dinner in
September 2011, raising over $220,000 for RMHC! The evening kicked off
with a moving performance by Gilbert Magnet Elementary students, then
guests enjoyed live and silent auctions, specialty cocktails and a sumptuous
dinner. The Coca-Cola Company was honored for their commitment and
support of RMHC for over 35 years, while the House Hero Award was presented
to Smith’s Food & Drug in recognition of their 10-year partnership for our
Annual Food Drive. We highlighted our “Lunch Is On Us” program, which
provides over 30,000 lunches each year to parents staying at their child’s hospital
bedside. Mark your calendars for the 2012 Ticket to Paradise Gala on
Saturday, September 8th, 2012.
Mixers
On the third Thursday of each month, RMHC hosts mixers at select “hot spots” in Las Vegas to raise
funds and awareness for our cause. The mixers are not only a fun way to relax after a long workday,
they provide a fabulous networking opportunity for a diverse crowd of Las Vegas professionals and
friends of the House. Guests enjoy appetizer and drink specials, raffle prizes, and the host locations
donate a percentage of proceeds to RMHC. In 2011, the following restaurants have helped raise over
$3,000 for RMHC.

Volunteer!
In 2010, 145 volunteers logged over 5,900 hours of service for RMHC of
Greater Las Vegas. Whether it was by cooking, cleaning, serving, or just
being there to lend a helping hand, these volunteers made a difference in
the lives of the children and families we serve. Beyond the physical and
emotional support they give, these valued members of our team also have
a profound effect on the cost of operating our programs. RMHC estimates
that volunteers saved our organization over $127,000 in 2010.
The following are just a few ways volunteers help RMHC:
●●House Volunteer - Help in the office & around the House with day
to day tasks.
●●Cook Dinner - Sign up to cook dinner for families staying at the
House. Great for groups and families!
●●Lunch Program - Prepare and deliver sack lunches for families
staying with their children at Sunrise Children’s Hospital and the
Children’s Hospital of Southern Nevada at UMC. You can also
help by decorating lunch bags and donating lunch items.
●●Pop Tabs - Collect the pull tabs from aluminum cans and drop
them off to the Ronald McDonald House. We recycle the tabs and
proceeds go directly to help our families.
●●Fundraising and Events - Assist with fundraising projects and
special events, such as the Annual Food Drive and 5K Run.
●●Hold A Fundraiser - Designate RMHC as the recipient of your
own fundraising event, such as a bake sale or golf tournament.
●●Wish List Drive - Collect much needed items from our wish
lists. We have a wish list for the House, lunch program, and a
holiday wish list.
Visit our website at www.rmhlv.com and become a volunteer today!
