Over four hundred revelers, our biggest crowd ever, turned out at Heinz Field on Friday, September 23rd for a night of fun on the high seas. After the S.S. Every Child Is Note Worthy departed port, guests were entertained by the elegant sounds of jazz great Vanessa Rubin while they feasted on numerous island delicacies, including Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Key Lime Cheesecake. Guests were welcomed aboard by “Captain” Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers Quarterback; “Cruise Director” Susan Deaidra Coleman, adopted through Every Child by her mother, CJ, posed on deck with Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Davis, Executive Director of Every Child; and “First Mate” Honorary Chairperson, Aaron Walton of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the evening’s lead sponsor. Mission: All children regardless of age, race, disability or seriousness of health care condition deserve to grow up in safe, loving and lasting families. Happy cruisers included guests John and Joyce Mitchell, Pat and George Wright and Gloria and Aaron Walton. Executive Director Susan Davis shared a smile with Ron Beyer and Gina Luffy, live auction winners of Ben Roethlisberger’s autographed helmet. This year’s event was extremely successful. The funds raised were designated to our “Family Ever After Fund” to benefit numerous children and families. Our sponsors were instrumental in helping Every Child to achieve a successful event. They include: Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Lord’s International, Deloitte., PMI, Sky Oxygen, MARC USA, Hoechstetter Printing an RR Donnelley Company, Bondi Printing, The Davis Family, Trombino Piano Gallerie and Don Allen Auto City. The ship’s entertainment was provided by musicians Roger Humphries, Vanessa Rubin, Danny Grissett and Dwayne Dolphin. Providing Family Ever After through integrated, comprehensive support services. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Americans were exposed to deeply entrenched poverty often glossed over in our nation. Many of us were moved and shocked by the images of extreme hardship that flashed across our television screens days after Hurricane Katrina left tens of thousands of our most vulnerable citizens stranded and homeless, many of them children. Unfortunately, families living in poverty exist throughout America. They face insurmountable odds every single day. At Every Child, Inc., we see firsthand the challenges faced by these families. The families and children we work with are often the most vulnerable in our society due to myriad problems such as environmental impoverishment, drug and alcohol addiction, lack of parenting skills and other factors. Fortunately, Every Child has many success stories to tell. We recently sat down with Dawn Brookins, Permanency Specialist at Every Child, Inc. Dawn enthusiastically shared a family's story of making remarkable strides while persevering against very difficult odds. This success story is only one of many examples demonstrating the crucial work Every Child performs for the families and children it serves. Tell us a little more about the family. Yolanda is 29 and the mother of three small children who reside with her: Darylron, 3; Darrell, 2; and Janasia, who is 5 months. CYF had established many goals for this family when they referred the case to Every Child: find community resources, improve parenting skills, help with mental health treatment if necessary, and monitor the mother’s drug and alcohol treatment program. Basically, all of the goals have been completed and the mother has completed relapse recovery therapy and continues to willingly attend support groups. helped them to thrive. experiences for free. After a smooth labor and Every Child’s doula services focus on teens delivery, Charlene needed help managing her and women with various disabilities and bipolar disorder. With referred to the doula program at Every Child the support of her fiancé, the baby’s father, to ensure that she had a successful pregnancy Charlene will assuredly be a fantastic parent and did not endure the same difficulties she to her baby. According to LaTanya, “Having faced the first time. LaTanya Perdue, an a baby was a great thing to happen to her. Every Child doula, was assigned to the case. A Doula Tale 2 Fall 2005 What other tangible resources does this family need? Furnishings and clothing, too, because children grow so fast. The holidays will be tough for her. Although she has family members that provide assistance, her dream of a Christmas that she would like to provide for her children is unattainable. Still, she looks forward to the holidays and is very appreciative of whatever she receives. I think she tries to be more self sufficient and will not ask for assistance. And for the long term, I think that this family needs to participate in more educational and cultural opportunities, but they often lack the money to do so. Now that the case is about to be closed, what do you see in this family’s future? I see Yolanda getting her own home and having a job somewhere she is successful. I see the children in a structured setting and see them sitting around on the floor reading. These children love to draw and love books, too. I definitely plan to touch base with this family even though the case is closed. This is a wonderful husband and wife team and they will be successful as parents”. Currently, Charlene is continuing her involvement with Every Child by taking Parents As Teachers (PAT) classes with Permanency Specialist Darlene Zukowski. Still, even though they have the tools they need to flourish, this family finds that some resources and supports are often out of reach. Can you help Charlene and her family for the holidays? This family is in dire need of bus passes, as Charlene works full time and they do not own an automobile. They likely will not be able to afford gifts for each other and the baby and a Christmas dinner this year. They could use your help in the form of gift cards, baby items, formula or diapers. Are you interested in helping to support this family or another family? Please call Ann Posch at 412-665-0600. Goodwill Power of Work Awards Every Child, Inc. was one of four companies and the only non-profit selected out of a field of 92 applicants to receive a coveted Power of Work Award. Sponsored by Goodwill Pittsburgh, The Power of Work Awards recognize outstanding efforts by employers in support of workforce development. Workforce development is a process of education, training, and development activities for increasing the skills and knowledge of individuals so they can maximize their employment opportunities, participate in productive work, and achieve their career potential. The recipients were chosen by an independent panel of judges — which included human service and human resources professionals, civic leaders, and members of the academic community. According to Goodwill, Every Child was chosen for this distinction because: • Employees are recruited from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of life experiences and abilities, including individuals with Every Child, Inc. is presented with a 2005 Power of Work Award. Pictured left to right: Mike Smith, President/CEO, Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh; Tenisha Williams, Every Child staff member; Lou Testoni, Power of Work Awards Honorary Chairperson and Office Managing Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers; Susan Davis, Executive Director of Every Child; Eddie DeAgostino, Every Child staff member; and Butch Dillen, Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh Board of Directors Chairperson physical disabilities and mental health issues. • Staff enjoy flexible scheduling and can bring children to work when necessary. Employees receive sick days for care of children and relatives and benefit from a flexible spending plan for medical and daycare expenses. • Most clerical employees were recruited through a welfare to work program. • The workplace operates upon an inclusive philosophy that values people for their abilities rather than their challenges. Introducing…. Family Focused Solution Based Services Every Child, Inc. is pleased to pioneer a new resource that will reach even more children and families. This new service aims to decrease the risk of out of home placement for vulnerable children. Every Child began Family Focused Solution Based Services on October 1, 2005 and plans to eventually hire nine new employees to provide this crucial assistance to families. Family Focused Solution Based Services is a therapeutic combination of child welfare and mental health approaches that is funded by Medicaid. Through this service, Every Child can serve up to 48 families at a time for a duration of 3-6 months by providing therapy, family support services, case coordination and advocacy, and a 24 hour crisis call line. According to Jim Cassels, Project Director at Every Child, “This new service allows us to reach families that otherwise would not have an opportunity to receive mental health services. The committee that developed this service did a great job of removing barriers that keep families from participating and benefiting from this wonderful child-centered family focused service.” Welcome, Laurie Waller! It is a pleasure to introduce our newest Every Child Board member, Laurie Waller, the Vice President and Owner of Sky Oxygen and a passionate advocate for adoption. Laurie and her husband Jeff are adoptive parents of two beautiful six year old girls from China. Their daughter Maya was adopted as an infant and Lucie was adopted as a 3 year old. Laurie was initially drawn to the work of Every Child three years ago by a friend, who knew that Laurie’s avid interest in adoption would make her a perfect supporter of the agency’s mission – to place children into loving, lasting and supportive families. Since that time, Laurie has gone the extra mile for Every Child, as a corporate sponsor of our Jazz event and silent auction donor. Prior to joining Sky Oxygen, a family business which she co-owns with her brother, Laurie worked as a human resources professional for ten years. In addition to devoting her time to Every Child, Laurie serves on the Inside Story Committee of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Laurie and her family reside in Wexford and are active in their local church, Dutilh United Methodist. Laurie is an avid skier and enjoys spending her weekends gliding down the slopes of Seven Springs with her family. Fall 2005 3 A Worthy Winner, A Worthy Cause Steelers Season Tickets Raffle July 29, 2005 was Dell Saunders’ lucky day! A lifelong Steelers fan who bleeds black and gold, this employee of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart Nicholson Graham never expected to receive a phone call telling her that she was the lucky winner of two Steelers season tickets. Incidentally, Dell holds the causes that Every Child fights for dear to her heart. As a certified foster parent to Antoin and mother of Prez, 21, who is developmentally delayed, she understands the importance of providing a safe, secure, and loving family. Congratulations, Dell! This win was not only a windfall for Dell, but for Every Child as well. Due to the success of our raffle ticket sales, Every Child raised close to $10,000, which directly and immediately benefited many children and families. Lucky winner Dell Saunders and her Steelers season tickets Special thanks to Tom Michael and Larrimor’s for Her for generously donating the season tickets. Dustin and Destiny, two children who have benefited from Every Child’s services, pulled the winning raffle ticket. Operation Warm Every Child was one of six social service agencies chosen to receive 75 brand new children’s winter coats through the Operation Warm Project, a collaborative effort of many Western Pennsylvania charities. Funded by the generosity of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Goodfellows, this initiative ensures that children will receive new coats to keep warm through yet another harsh Pittsburgh winter! The coats were delivered on November 4th by the US Marines Toys for Tots Program and members of the Howard Levin Clubhouse and Jewish Residential Services. Thanks again to all for your warm support! Every Child staff members Dawn Brookins, Petra Tallo, Shatika Akrie and Joy Smith sort winter coats for children. Congratulations Don Johnston Every Child Board Member and Treasurer Well done, Don! Don Johnston, Board Member and Treasurer of Every Child, was recently recognized for his financial acumen and dedication in the 2005 Pittsburgh Business Times CFO of the Year Awards. Don was a finalist in the community service category and was chosen for this award due to his strong commitment to Every Child. 4 New Grants Every Child received a $50,000 grant from the DSF Charitable Foundation to provide support to medically fragile children and their families. Because of this funding, a group of vulnerable children who often fall through the cracks of the current systems of care will be assured a safe, healthy and loving family life. This grant, in combination with our current grants with the Highmark Foundation and the Pennsylvania Disabilities Planning council, will assuredly create statewide changes which will ultimately improve the chances for children who have complex medical needs to be able to live with their families. Additionally, Every Child received a $50,000 grant from Pittsburgh Social Venture Partners (PSVP) for the second year running to continue evaluating and improving the efficiency of the agency.
