the BEACON The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter Issue 14 - Summer 2009 content Agent Seminar Thank you, Steinar! Re-certified Large scale contract Jotron athletes NOR-SHIPPING The 2009 edition of Nor-Shipping had as many as 1050 exhibitors from 49 different countries, and this is in the middle of the so called financial crisis. Fantastic! Nor-Shipping has reached a stage in its existence where it´s being called the biggest maritime event in the world. Having heard these rumours, it´s safe to say that this was indeed a good investment for the Jotron Group, and probably several other companies exhibiting at the event. The Jotron Group joined the rest of the Norwegian Pavilion in Hall C and were very happy with the stand. Jotron AS launched a press release prior to the event, about the new AIS-SART which was received with gratitude and optimism. Jotron Consultas handed out advice to existing customers about their upgraded version 4 software and Jotron Phontech presented their latest design of internal communication systems. Overall, the exhibition was very successful with most Jotron staff staying in Oslo where they were able to entertain visitors, agents and customers during the evenings. www.jotron.com The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter Issue 14 - Summer 2009 MANAGEMENT US region - things to come in 2009 2009 is proving to be a very fastpaced, challenging and exciting year for Jotron USA. The past three months have been a blur for me, since joining Jotron USA as General Manager in March. I have been traveling and meeting our friends and partners within our agent and distribution networks, including the very well received Agent Seminar held at Jotron headquarters in Larvik, Norway in June. In May, we were invited to showcase our VHF and UHF radio capabilities with the Federal Aviation Administration in New Jersey, with the solid support of Otto Holm, Technical Director, and Morten Gjersøe, Business Development Manager from Jotron AS. Jotron USA will be hosting a Shore Based Maintenance training course in Houston 4-5 August, conducted by Fred Ivar Tallaksen from Jotron AS. We have partners from North and South America attending, and we are very excited about the opportunity to work closely with them. Jotron USA will also be exhibiting again this year at the Work Boat Show in New Orleans from 2-4 December 2009. Please visit us at Booth 2859. With responsibility for North and South America, we at Jotron USA have a lot of territory to cover. To all of our friends and partners, we will be coming to see each and every one of you personally in 2009. Jotron has many new products coming in late 2009 and mid 2010, and we are very excited about renewing our relationships with you, and discussing the many opportunities available within the Jotron Maritime, Phontech, Ground to Air and Consultas product lines. General Manager Jotron USA, Patrick Woodman. EVENT OTC - Offshore Technology Conference 2009 The 40th annual Offshore Technology Conference was held in Houston, Texas from 4-7 May, 2009. OTC is the premier event in the United States to showcase products and services supporting the onshore and offshore petroleum industries. For the 4th consecutive year, Jotron USA participated in OTC as an exhibitor, displaying the complete range of Jotron products: Ground-to-Air, Phontech, Maritime, and Consultas. The Jotron booth was well situated in the Norwegian pavilion, as part of the Innovation Norway exhibition. Manning the booth for Jotron USA this year were Patrick Woodman(General Manager), Juan Oltra (GTA Sales Manager), James Gooch(Phontech Sales Manager), and Dave Mallette (Maritime Sales Manager). Jotron USA was pleased to have Tor Kristian Lystad and Arve Ingebret- From left: Juan Oltra (Jotron USA), Patrick Woodman (Jotron USA), Arve Ingebretsen (Jotron Phontech), James Gooch (Jotron USA and Tor Kristian Lystad (Jotron Phontech) sen from Jotron Phontech visiting the stand during the convention, and then providing Phontech product training to all of the Jotron USA personnel on their last day. Although the overall OTC attendance was lower this year, in part due to the world economy and also to the recent Swine Flu pandemic, Jotron did generate quite a bit of interest in their products, especially with the new AISSART and the Consultas shipboard software programs. The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter Issue 14 - Summer 2009 CONFERENCE Agent seminar at Farris Bad Hotel In the beginning of June, Jotron arranged an agent seminar in Larvik. 40 agents from 30 different countries were represented, including Jotron subsidiaries and employees. The seminar was a pre-Nor-Shipping 2009 meeting where the objective was to inform about new product innovations and meet face to face. Farris Bad Hotel became the venue for this seminar, a hotel which opened in March, had barely time to test their own facilities before Jotron took over most of their rooms. Feedback from the guests showed good service, excellent food and comfortable rooms. The seminar gave the opportunity for Jotron to show the fantastic scenery around Larvik. A boat ride to Citadell Island on day one, with history lessons and academic presentations gave a good foundation for a successful seminar. Day two began with a guided tour around Jotron´s facilities before returning to the hotel for further academic seminars. Day three was concluded with Ground to Air training. www.jotron.com The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter DISTRIBUTOR Customer satisfaction During the past 6 months Jotron has received feedback from their distributor network all around the globe. What is safe to say is, the feedback is a major reference to customers who are in the ”decide” stage as to which products to choose from, amongst the world’s suppliers. The ATC event in Amsterdam during March 2009 (ref. The Beacon issue 13) was very useful for Jotron. End users visited the Jotron stand and expressed their enthusiasm for the equipment. Suriname Civil Aviation has had 5000-series radios from Jotron for more than 20 years without any problems and are now upgrading to newer equipment. As of today, Jotron has supplied over 2500 radios in Norway, 2600 in Turkey and closer to 1000 in Greece. All airports in New Zealand have Jotron radios, and after extensive tests found these radios to be the best. Director of Safety, Operations & Infrastructure with IATA (Asia/Pacific Office), David Behrens says: ”We would have no hesitation in recommending these Jotron transceivers to other Civil Aviation Authorities for purchase. We have found the sales and marketing as well as technical support services from Jotron to be exemplary throughout our association.” In 2009, Jotron will deliver radios to Norway, The Azors, Malaysia, China, Stansted and Manchester in the UK, Equador, New Quito, Suriname, Georgia, Greece, Turkey, Swaziland etc. Many of Jotron´s end users are satisfied with both quality, prices and service. Kenya, Jordan, Namibia and several other countries have had Jotron equipment for more than 15 years without any problems. Issue 14 - Summer 2009 The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter Issue 14 - Summer 2009 JOTRON Past & Future for Jotron For the past 35 years,” recently retired” from Jotron, Steinar Sæter has experienced every possible scenario a Managing Director could face. In an interview with The Beacon, he shares his emotions and gratitude of having had the chance of being a part of Jotron for his entire working career. Jotron was based in Levanger from the beginning in 1967 and moved to Tjodalyng in 1978. From January 1975 to the last working day of May 2009, he has had several positions in the Jotron organization. He started his career in the lab, moved on to being the Production Manager, Marketing Manager and ended up as the Managing Director for the past 21 years. Being filled up with mixed emotions and feeling a great amount of loss and want, Mr. Sæter feels he made the right decision when he decided to retire at the age of 62. He says: ”The older you get, the harder it is to make difficult decisions, which sometimes have to be made as the Managing Director.” It´s not difficult to see the passion in his eyes when he refers to his life with Jotron. He says it has been a fantastic life, and I don´t regret anything I have been a part of. But as for life in general, there has also been a few experiences I could have done without.” Going back a couple of decades and when asked, Mr. Sæter tells The Beacon about his first visit to Radio Holland. This is an experience he will remember from his period as a young Marketing Manager with great pleasure. And in 1978, Jotron made their first distributor agreement with Radio Holland, who are still one of the main Jotron distributors worldwide. This is a moment he is very proud of having been a part of. Mr. Sæter has left a major hole to fill, but replacing him, is an ambitious young and unafraid Managing Director. Magnus Vold is 42 years of age and was From left: Steinar Sæter and Magnus Vold ”I have had a fantastic rich and meaningful Jotron life and met interesting people all over the world throughout my entire career.” Steinar Sæter previously with ABB in various executive positions. Mr. Vold initiated a dialog himself with Mr. Sæter and was chosen because of his broad international experience and being market oriented. He says this job opportunity is a major task, but he is ready to face it. With the kind of knowledge and experience you will find through the walls at Jotron, he will not face all challenges himself. Jotron has a solid fundamental standpoint and he appreciates the fact that he has several teams backing him up. In general, Mr. Vold feels comfortable when he has to meet the various challenges. He has already had the role as Sales and Marketing Director for 18 months and knows what he is getting involved with. Mr. Sæter expresses the fact that Mr. Vold has to be both the driving and motivating force within the Jotron Group. For future references, Mr. Sæter has a lot of hobbies to keep him busy. First of all he has a role of being a mentor, helping new companies getting started. He is also involved with counseling and holding presentations. Mr. Sæter has gained a lot of knowledge throughout his career and wants to use this in his after-Jotron-life. In addition he also enjoys carpentry. ”But remember Mr. Sæter, you have earned yourself a good retirement, so hopefully you will find time to relax and enjoy your life”. The Beacon and the rest of the Jotron Group wish you all the best in the future and wishes Mr. Vold good luck as your replacement. www.jotron.com The JOTRON GROUP Newsletter Issue 14 - Summer 2009 APPROVALS UAB Jotron certified and Jotron AS re-certified UAB Jotron, the Jotron Group´s production facility in Kaunas, Lithuania received their first ISO certificate, dated May 12th 2009.
