Neighborhoods Inc. 2006 Annual Report Raising the Bar Letter from the Executive Director November 2006 During the reporting period of 11.01.05 - 10.31.06 NI continued its customary and historical community development work in the Calumet Region, established new linkages and worked toward developing new service outreach and revenue sources. NI forged a fruitful partnership with the First Baptist Church of Hammond (see pp. 4, 9) as FBC provided thousands of hours of volunteer labor for Operation Restoration 2006. Hundreds of young volunteers improved the State Line neighborhood in May and later painted four senior-owned homes in Hammond. NI continued to develop the Best House on the Block Contest® with impressive results in its second run in Highland (see p. 5). On January 31, 2006 NI was notified by the United States Patent and Trademark Office that the project name was now a registered trademark. The contest continued to be valued by other nearby communities with prospects of several project sites for 2007. Three NI board directors formed an ad hoc East Chicago Activities Committee to discuss NI's potential involvement in the Twin City. Calumet City officials awarded NI a $77,000 contract to coordinate the Best House on the Block Contest® for the entire city in 2006 - 2007. Officials from three nearby communities contacted NI regarding the possibility of doing community development work. Legacy Foundation awarded NI a grant to step up marketing and implementation of the Realice el Sueño Americano program to increase Hispanic homeownership (see p.7). The nutty, colorful Neighborhoods IncSKI Surplus Building Materials and Construction Site Refuse Air Band performed in three local community parades in Whiting, Calumet City and Highland, appearing before an estimated 20,000 persons (see p. 9). After a 6 1/2 year stint in Woodmar Mall, NI relocated in February after purchasing a one-story storefront brick building at 6340 Kennedy (see p. 3). NI received needed support from its board of directors, new business neighbors, funders and elected officials during this reporting period. We look forward to landing new projects and building on established programming in 2007. Raising the bar, Board of Directors President Ardell S. Speaks Executive Director -1- Art Mulholland Harris Bank Dave Ryan Lakeshore Chamber -2- NI Moves With the looming demolition of the Woodmar Mall, NI moved in February 2006 to 6340 Kennedy Avenue in Hessville. The new office is a storefront location on a street with daily visibility to thousands of passing motorists. After settling in, painting and installing new carpeting, NI held a Grand Re-Opening on April 26, 2006. Attendees enjoyed refreshments and the relaxing strum of a live classical guitarist throughout the afternoon. The event climaxed symbolically at 4:30 with the unveiling of Picasso II, a colorized, original oil replica of Pablo Picasso's 1937 immortal Guernica, painted by Steve Kaufman, a protegé of Andy Warhol. A Record Fundraising Year Over 80 enthusiastic supporters of Neighborhoods Inc. and its community development efforts joyfully celebrated the results of the 2005 Resource Development Campaign, which netted a record $112,984 in cash pledges from businesses, institutions and private individuals, at its annual Victory Celebration on February 8. Neighbors, board directors, event and special project supporters, business persons and public officials mingled during the social hour in the lobby of the beautiful Towle Community Theater. NI staff welcomed and served guests until 5:45 when attendees walked upstairs to the theater and were greeted by TCT director Jeff Casey. Ardell Young, NI board president, then introduced executive director Keith Speaks, who welcomed the guests. Speaks introduced Books, Brushes and Bands for Education director Michelle Golden who spoke about her foundation and then presented the Hammond Citywide Choir, a choral ensemble consisting of 60 Hammond school children from 18 schools ranging from 7 to16 years old. Directed by Melba Right, the children sang two songs: Blue Skies by Irving Berlin and Do-Re-Mi by Rodgers & Hammerstein from The Sound of Music. Following the musical presentation, Speaks presented the 2005 annual report to supporters. Keith Magiera, Highland Redevelopment Commissioner, spoke about the successful Neighborhoods Inc. Best House on the Block Contest® and Hammond resident Mary Ellen Slazyk moved the crowd with her tears of joy as she explained how NI's Operation Restoration 2005 allowed her family to upgrade and beautify their historic Lewis Street home near Harrison Park. The annual NI Award for Excellence was presented to Ron Lubas for his six years of dedicated service. Ron was lauded for bringing continuous, significant resources to NI over the years, and for his extraordinary assistance with Operation Restoration 2005. The inaugural JB Smith Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award was then presented to Calvin Bellamy in recognition of his decades of distinguished service to the betterment of Hammond and the Calumet Region. The surprised recipient said that he has no plans to stop what he is doing and will continue his volunteer work for years to come. The formal presentation then ended and those attending continued to enjoy refreshments and fellowship in the theater lobby. Picasso II At press time, since 1998 a total of $819,219 in cash has been donated to NI by 295 companies, institutions and municipalities and 368 private individuals. $ -3- Operation Restoration 2006 Operation Restoration moved into its third year with a successful three-phase improvement project that began in May in Calumet City and ended October 20 in Hammond. Phase I began on May 5-6, with over 400 student volunteers and supervisors from City Baptist School and Hammond Baptist School gathering in Memorial Park on Wentworth Avenue. They, along with residents of Calumet City and Hammond, provided labor to paint curbs and fire hydrants in Calumet City, as well as conduct a massive cleanup and landscaping effort that covered two square miles in two states. Hundreds of bags of garbage were collected from empty lots, alleys, streets and parks. The volunteers also raked, edged and beautified neglected, overgrown areas. Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush, Alderman Gerald Tarka, City Treasurer Mike Zimmerman, Calumet City municipal employees and NI board directors were there to pitch in and get their hands dirty as well. Phase II took place July 10-14 and consisted of mainly roofing and painting work to improve homes in East Chicago. NI contributed funds to the Calumet City First Baptist Church, World Changers program fiduciary, to pay for the 350 volunteers' lunch. During Phase III, the exteriors of four seniorowned homes in Hammond were greatly improved by new coats of paint over a three-day period in the fall. NI coordinated this project, donating ladders, 1031 Lyons Before 1031 Lyons After supplies and expertise. City Baptist brought over 70 boys to provide the labor. Recipients of the free labor had qualified to receive free paint through the Hammond Department of Planning & Development's "Project Pride Paint Program," coordinated by Owana Miller, Community Development Planner. This resource is available to qualified homeowners and has operated for over 20 years. Operation Restoration 2006 is a collaboration of many entities uniting to provide the components necessary for a successful project. Financial contributions play a large role and we thank the following major donors for their support above and beyond NI's annual fundraising effort: Alderman Ed González Alderman Gerald Tarka Calumet City Chamber of Commerce Centier Bank Citizens Savings Foundation City of Calumet City Commissioner Fran Dupey Corus Bank Councilman Al Salinas Councilman Anthony Higgs First Financial Bank First Midwest Bank Liberty Savings Bank National City Bank Northlake Auto Recyclers Oil Express ~ Calumet City Peoples Bank St. Margaret Mercy Steve Finch Transportation Support Group Unicorp Federal Credit Union -4- Best House on the Block Contest® in Highland On October 19, 2006, participants in the Neighborhoods Inc. Mr. Garza convinced many of his neighbors to enter and coordinated a volunteer effort with the Suburban Bible Church to make significant improvements to a widow's home. An anonymous donation doubled the original contest area to 2,000 homes. Judges from Hammond, Whiting and Munster toured the 3208 Ridge After contest area on October 9 to evaluate and choose the top five winners. Three contestants won door prizes donated by the following local businesses: Highland Jewelers, Langel's Pizzeria, Les Brothers Pancake House, National City Bank, The Blue Room Café and the Downtown Highland Deli. Popa Heating & Cooling made a financial contribution for 8751 Prairie After the Awards Ceremony. Use of the Social Center was donated by Senator Frank Mrvan and North Township Trustee Frank Mrvan. 2848 Garfield After 6th Annual Hammond Dog Walk June 3, 2006 NI held its popular Dog Walk in Downtown Hammond with over 300 participants attending. The walk consists of a 1.2 mile route through Downtown Hammond and Calumet City, with a brief stop in front of St. Joseph Church for a blessing of the animals. After returning to the greenspace, walkers perused vendor tables and other petrelated businesses and enjoyed the treat bags handed out during registration. The Windy-City K-9 Disc Club displayed their prowess to onlookers. Participants entered their 4-legged friends in contests such as Best Pooch Smooch, Best Dressed, Best Frisbee Catch and Best Trick. Over six years, the Dog Walk has been attended by nearly 3,000 people and 1,157 canines. Funds raised in 2005 and 2006 were donated to local police K-9 units from Hammond, Calumet City and Lake County Sheriff's Department. In August, checks were presented to the unit commanders in NI's new office. Golf Outing June 5, 2006 NI held its 2nd Annual Golf Outing at Wicker Park, organized by board directors Robin Salzeider, Rob Garrison and Lisa Kusiak. Raising over $4,000 for NI, they obtained 24 hole sponsors and dozens of in-kind donations used for prizes and raffles. After 18 holes, a family-style dinner was served at the Wicker Park Clubhouse during the presentation of prizes and fellowshipping. State Line Fest July 15, 2006 The 6th Annual State Line Fest united neighbors from Calumet City and Hammond, attracting a multitude of visitors who enjoyed carnival activities, interactive games, conversation, art and food. Located on State Line Road between Warren and Waltham Streets in Hammond and Calumet City, the Fest offered a DJ, street performers and an entertaining dunk tank. Children enjoyed Jelly Bean the clown, a stilt-walker and the Two State Talent Roundup talent contest featuring singing, instrumentals, dancing and more. Cash prizes were awarded in three categories. The festival brings people from both sides of State Line together to show there are no real boundaries between the states and to celebrate the combined efforts of the two communities. 2005 Holiday Decorating Contest Washington Park Area East Chicago Residents near Washington Park in East Chicago were invited to participate in the Holiday Home Decorating Contest sponsored by St. Catherine Hospital. Judges from Crown Point, Olympia Fields and Hammond examined each home looking for creativity, illumination, spirit of the season and holiday themes. An awards ceremony was held at St. Catherine Hospital on December 21, 2005 where all entrants received Certificates of Participation and the top three winners received cash prizes. Fifty-one persons attended this celebratory event. -6- Legacy Funds El Sueño... ¡Gracias! We did this... Thanks to a $6,000 Legacy Foundation grant received in March, NI was able to utilize its capacity to provide Homebuyer Education Classes to Spanish-speaking persons in the Calumet Region. This generous grant allowed NI to inform thousands of Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting residents of the free educational opportunities. The grant also allowed NI to make many more new contacts with sources in East Chicago. ¡Muchas gracias, Legacy! From November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2006, NI staff handled 8,132 phone calls, personal visits, interviews and other contacts, an average of 1,626 per staff member. Board Involvement NI board directors continued to assist staff to "get the job done." Executive Committee members Young, Salzeider and Roberts assisted staff throughout the reporting period, especially in meetings, planning and negotiations with Calumet City related to a development on State Line Road. Directors Salzeider, Kusiak and Garrison put together another successful golf outing June 5th at Wicker Park Golf Course and Clubhouse. New NI director Gloria Gayle served as a judge in the Washington Park Area Holiday Home Decorating Contest in East Chicago. Directors Machnikowski and Bachmann volunteered at the 6th Annual Hammond Dog Walk. NI directors Kusiak, Gayle, Magiera and Garrison attended the October 19 Highland Best House on the Block Contest® Awards Ceremony and assisted in greeting guests and handing out awards. Directors Ryan, Kusiak and Gayle formed an ad hoc East Chicago Committee and brainstormed and made contacts to introduce NI's programs to the Twin City. Director Bullock and her husband John held an NI night in May at one of their Wendy's restaurants to raise money and publicize the company. Directors Roberts, Garrison and Ryan volunteered in early May to deliver lunches and assist in Phase I of Operation Restoration 2006. Directors Mulholland, Gayle and Forslund helped NI develop stronger ties with their respective lending institutions. Director Magiera volunteered to make scores of phone calls during the 2006 Resource Development effort. Directors Lubas and Ryan provided resources to allow NI staff to engage in social activities leading to extensive networking and fundraising support. -7- St. Margaret Mercy donated a small home at 5535 Hohman in April. The long-abandoned eyesore began to see a dramatic makeover and will be offered for sale in early 2007. NI underwent its sixth consecutive audit for the 2005 fiscal year with another unqualified opinion of its financial statements. HEDC (Hammond Enterprise Development Corp.) During November 1, 2005 - October 31, 2006, NI met a roadblock in its attempt to develop a large lot in the Frogtown neighborhood of Hammond, just south of Roxana in East Chicago. NI, which operates HEDC as a contribution to the City of Hammond, will consider seeking a grant to bring the parcel to developable status. Since then, several other lots suitable for infill housing have been identified throughout Hammond. What people are saying... Thanks so much for the tour. It's so important for our donors to see the type of impact they can have in the community. It was great to learn about NI and the great job you are doing. As a new Hammond resident, I'm especially pleased by your mission. NI has improved many homes in the Gibson Woods area which has in turn raised the value of all the surrounding properties. NI also provides a homebuyer's education class which has been very useful to many citizens when purchasing their homes. Homero "Chico" Hinojosa, 6th District Hammond Councilman I want to thank NI again for your generosity and support of the Hammond Police Department K-9 Unit. We have enjoyed participating in the Hammond Dog Walk and appreciate your donation. This funding will allow us to purchase much needed equipment such as collars, muzzles, leases, cooling fans for the K-9 squad, lumber for our K-9 Confidence Course and also possibly advanced training courses for our teams. Thanks again for your generous support. Sgt. Kelvin E. Alcox, Hammond Police Department We are pleased to support the Healthy Neighborhoods program, which we believe underscores NIPSCO's commitment to the communities we serve. We recognize the important contribution your organization makes to the community and are proud to be a partner in your work. We wish you the best as you continue your program. Tim Herwig, V.P., Community Affairs, TCF National Bank Over the past two years it has been a pleasure to work with the Neighborhoods Inc. staff to bring the very successful and well received Best House on the Block Contest® to our Town. We have seen the program expand not only in the number of participants, but also in the level of interest within the community. Cecile Petro, Redevelopment Director, Town of Highland I am writing this letter to commend you on the fine opportunities your organization provides for our city. I think the programs that you promote, such as trying to increase homeownership opportunities, building neighborhoods by lending for improvement of properties so that owners may improve their homes, and also by providing construction and design services to neighborhood residents, increase neighborhood pride. All of these services and the many more that you provide have been a major influence on our city. Anthony W. Higgs, 3rd District Hammond Councilman The Whiting/Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the Neighborhoods IncSKI Surplus Building Materials and Construction Site Refuse Air Band for your fifth consecutive year of participation in our Polka Parade.
