PAGE 3 Homecoming: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year By JULIE PHAM VU assistant editor Homecoming: This is the most important week of the school year, the one week where freshmen and seniors, polka dots and stripes, or Celtics fans and Lakers fans can coexist peacefully. This is the time where every student is proud to be a Monarch. We started off the week with mixnot-match-day. I may have shed tears of joy when I heard of this spectacular day. Finally, I could wear polka dots with zebra stripes, and not be judged. Not that this has ever stopped me before, but it was comforting to see my fellow classmates wearing the same thing. Even teachers rocked plaid pants and striped shirts with mix-matched shoes. The sight was magnificent. It was like looking into a very bright and unusual crayon box. Every spectrum of the color wheel was projected onto our clothing, and it was epic. Of course, everyone looked absolutely ridiculous, but the best part was that it was perfectly okay! And when I walked downstairs and my mother gave me the usual disapproving look for my unorthodox, yet positively superb outfit, this time I had a legitimate excuse. Oh, the glory! If the purpose of mix-not-match Our Modern Fairytale The Homecoming Court (from left to right): Tess Morales, Devin Barrett, Queen Alexa Vellanoweth, Isabel Lozowski, Tracy Wigmore, Alexis Meruelo, and Veronica Valdez. day was to make the student body look: (1) color-blind, (2) just blind, in general, or (3) like aliens trying to disguise themselves as humans (I must admit, they succeeded). Next was Western Wednesday (props to Scott Bowman for the awesome proposal and AP-caliber alliteration). On this wonderfully western day, the A Visit From Another World Mater Dei student body witnessed an extraordinary array of plaid flannel shirts; brown leather boots; and large belt buckles. Then came the day where tension boiled, where best friends turned to enemies, and pride for your team surpassed all else. This was the day where we defined ourselves as a Lakers fan or Celtics Dead Man Walking Indian Exchange Students Live the Life of Monarchs By COREY HAMMOND editor-in-chief It’s rare that we get to meet people from across the world that are the same age as our Mater Dei students. We have so much to learn from other cultures and ethnicities— things that will benefit both societies and create a more peaceful world in the long run. Mater Dei hosted ten Indian exchange students September 28th through October 8th. During their stay, the exchange students were able to experience our lifestyle, while we learned from them about their own culture. It all started on a Wednesday morning when the exchange students met their hosts. Nick Manning, Nick and Jaqueline Adams, Sean Finck, and David and Jessica Ure were the exquisite tour guides for the exchange students. The hosts awaited their upcoming experience with anticipation. “I was very excited to be a host for students that were so far from our community,” said David Ure. Right from the beginning, the hosts had plans for the exchange students in order to keep them busy. “On Saturday morning, we took them surfing, and in the evening, we went to a Blink 182 concert. On Sunday, they went to the Blessing of the Waves [at the Huntington Beach Pier], then to the Mission San Juan Capistrano,” explained Jennifer Ure. After such excitement during the weekend, the students attended classes and lived the daily life of a Mater Dei student. “The lifestyle is very structured in America,” said Anirudh (Andy) Korukonda, an Indian exchange student. “Everyone follows a timetable. If I lived here, I would be late all the time.” Because it was Homecoming week, the exchange students were able to see Mater Dei’s true school spirit. They first went to the Homecoming Showcase, where they observed the amazing dance routines by the students and faculty. There was no better way to end their trip than with a Mater Dei football game, in which our football athletes smothered Gardena, 52-16. When all was over, both cultures learned many things from each other. “Their roads are crazy in India, and they mostly ride bikes,” said Jennifer Ure. “Their lives are not as busy as ours.” Sai Saketh Vanaparthi said America is very different than India, specifically because “People actually follow traffic rules on the roads,” he said. Unfortunately, the Indian exchange students had to return home, but they were able to take home what they learned from us, and tell their family and friends what they saw and experienced. We, the Mater Dei community, also get to do this. We Please see EXCHANGE STUDENTS, page 9 fan, Angel or Cub, Bruin or Trojan, Edward or Jacob. This was Jersey Day. It’s always very interesting to see the incredible breach within the student body over sports. Throughout the day, you could hear people arguing over which team is better than others. And there was always one person in the back who rooted for the underdog, like the Washington Wizards. However, come Friday, the student body was united once again in school pride. This was the Homecoming game and, luckily, we were all rooting for the same team. The Mater Dei football team dominated the scoreboard against Gardena, with a final score of 52 to 16. And the crowd went wild. Let’s not forget to mention the extremely anticipated announcement of the 2011-2012 Homecoming Queen, Alexa Vellanoweth, who looked breathtakingly gorgeous as she walked down the football field, along with the other stunning princesses, Devin Barrett, Isabel Lozowski, Alexis Meruelo, and Tracy Wigmore. The energy within the stadium was overwhelming. Imagine placing your ear next to a shotgun while it’s being fired multiple times. That would be nothing, compared to the excruciatingly piercing roars of the Mighty Monarchs as Vellanoweth’s name was announced. Please see HOMECOMING, page 9 Project Discourse: 2011 By KATIE GATIAN assistant editor Following thought-provoking shows including The Diary of Anne Frank (2009) and Skin of Our Teeth (2010) -- of years past, Project: Discourse 2011, Dead Man Walking, is sure to ignite powerful discussion and touch the hearts and minds of all. Based on her novel, Tim Robbins’ play focuses on Sister Helen Prejean as she delves into a battle of morals. The powerful drama illustrates both sides of the capital punishment case of Matt Poncelet, with Sister Helen as his spiritual counselor during his time on Death Row. “This play is about dignity. This play is about sacrifice. This play is about devotion,” said Williams, “I hope through classroom participation, the campus will begin a dialogue about human rights and the power of redemption.” In preparing for a show that brings up the controversial issue of the death penalty, Performing Arts Director Mr. Patrick Williams “is using a brand-new rehearsal technique that involves a ton of reflection to allow actors and actresses to completely understand their characters.” said junior Casey Brecher, who plays the rough and tough convict, Poncelet. “We focus more on the emotion and the concepts of the play and characters. Through the emotions, the blocking and memorizing the lines come to us naturally,” adds senior Joanna Cornejo, who portrays one of two Sister Helens in the show. A creative choice unique to this MD production is the casting of two Mater Dei actresses to play Sister Helen as opposed to the traditional one actress. Williams explains, “One actress is the narrator and the other actress is in the scenes. This allows the audience to hear and see the story of Sister Helen’s life as told by [senior] Bryana Corza, and as portrayed in 1984 by Joanna Cornejo.” Cornejo adds, “One Sister Helen is reflecting upon the actions that are taking place, and the other is living the actions with all the other characters.” This original spin should provide for a fresh and dynamic look on the story that’s bound to keep the audience on its toes. Backing up the leads are a talented supporting cast and ensemble. Seniors Alexa Vellanoweth and Matt Pancoe play Sister Colleen, best friend and confidante to Sister Helen, and prison chaplain, respectively. Seniors Matt Dallal and Veronica Valencia bring in the raw emotions of a murder case to life as the parents of Poncelet’s young victims. Adding a perspective that is commonly overlooked in a case involving capital punishment is senior Jackie Janowicz as Lucielle Poncelet, Matt’s mother. Please see DEAD MAN WALKING, page 9 FEATURE 2 In Focus Rocky Pajarito and Jonathan Gill By MARY PEREZ assistant editor This month the Scarlet Scroll delves deeply into the lives of the amazingly talented Rocky Pajarito and Jonathan Gill. These two individuals add variety to the student body of Mater Dei with their two unique talents. 9. How do you hope to impact the music world with your beat boxing skills? After an amazing performance at the Homecoming Showcase, the Scarlet Scroll will look into the beat boxing life of Jonathan Gill. 10. Are you going to beat box for anymore Mater Dei events soon? 1. How old were you learned how to I I you beat when box? was twelve years old when picked up beat boxing. 2. Who or what inspired you to beat box? I was inspired to learn how to beat box during a field trip. Someone asked me if I could beat box and I couldn’t, so this inspired me to learn. 3. up From this where did particular you pick talent ? I learned how to beat box by watching videos on YouTube, and constantly practicing. 4. Have you competed in any competitions, either locally or nationally? No, but I have performed at several venues. 5. What most do you enjoy about beat boxing? Is it your passion? I like the fact that many people have not heard of it before. It is unique. 6. Do you plan to become a professional beat boxer? Where do you plan on taking your beat boxing talent? I intend on using my talent to make money, which I will ultimately give to charity. 7. Which beat boxer would you say is your number one influence? I would have to say my influences in the beat boxing world came from Ranzel, Felix Zanger, and Eklips. 8. How do you think beat boxing, or music in general, contributes to society? I believe beat boxing and music in general are positive aspects in society. Beat boxing helps people express themselves. I want to be known worldwide, and help young, aspiring artists to become recognized. I hope to perform very soon! Many of the students of Mater Dei have seen Rocky Pajarito greet them in the morning on MDTV. Now the Scarlet Scroll will take a closer look at his multiple talents. 1. What do about your you enjoy most multiple talents? I suppose that I just enjoy being wellrounded in some sense, especially in terms of things I love. I have multiple passions in life, and I love to write and talk about them, as well as partake in my own attempts to create in aforementioned fields. Being able to play an instrument helps create a sense of individualism, as well as a notion of teamwork, mainly when in a band. And, of course, being a drummer has taught me how to multitask, which has helped productivity in many aspects of my life! 2. Whendidyoulearnhowtoplaythedrums? Around 5th grade, I was in a Las Vegas arcade and I saw a Japanese drumming video game that pretty much let you hit a bunch of black pads with bamboo sticks to your choice picks of 90s classics. Being adventurous to the weakest of degrees, I popped in the appropriate amount of quarters and began to play a Limp Bizkit song (I was a “cool kid”), followed by a Cake song. Something turned on in my head, and after playing, the first thing I told my parents was that I demanded a drum set when we got back home. I obviously didn’t get it immediately, but they were on board with the idea, and I began to drum on random, solid surfaces whenever I could, and I still do today! 3. What excites you most about music? The de-constructionist look at music and general feel music gives off probably excites me the most. The unspoken magic of team play and brilliance of structure colliding into one, beautiful explosion are just magnificent. Instruments bouncing back and Jonathan Gill As much as I do love music and playing it, I don’t intend on making it my career or majoring in the field. That said, I do intend on continuing to learn on the side if I can--I still wish to learn how to play the guitar, and to get back into playing the piano, and even continue to develop my percussion prowess. Though I won’t make it my priority, I readily admit that music is one of the most important parts of my life. eo game journalists such as Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis of Giant Bomb, not because they’re hilarious men, but because they have integrity and excellent eyes and a handle on their own mediums of choice. So, for a while, I followed suit, and tried my hand at reviewing games and just talking about them. In 7th grade, I realized that I kind of like movies, and started to notice some small things, like camera trickery or editorial gags, and not so much as recognized them, but recognized the fact that I found them funny, and that it was strange. I applied my writing for video games to movies, and from then on, attempted to develop my own voice and writing ability, as well as build upon my knowledge of movies. In 2009, I saw Jody Hill’s Observe and Report, and that more or less got me into the deeper aspects of film, technically and story-wise. It kick-started my wholehearted and deep-seeded love for the art of film and filmmaking, as well as my more detailed description of such a passion. 5. Why did come an you decide to beMDTV anchor? 8. Have you published any of your reviews to the local media newspapers or the Internet? I’ve always wanted to work behind the scenes primarily, but I decided that I needed to work on my public speaking abilities. I’m notorious for speaking quietly and too fast, which is not necessarily an excellent combination. So I have come to learn that it is quite fun to anchor, and as I expected, it helped and continues to help me work on my enunciation and speaking abilities. I have posted all my reviews on the Internet, or the World Wide Web, if you’d prefer. Both in depth and in mini, “fun” size reviews I’ve written can be found on Screened.com/profile/NOFX4208/reviews. A few video reviews of mine, as well as short films and videos I have helped make lie in the pits of YouTube, and the reviews also end up on the MDTV website. 6. What are the perks ing a crew member of 9. I have read your movie reviews, and they are outstanding! Where do you plan on taking your movie critiquing skills in the future? Do you plan on becoming a cinematographer in the future? forth off of each other shows chemistry being shared, which I think is necessary in all working things, and the progression of pace and notes impresses me constantly. Not many would consider it in the same way, but I see music as story-telling and emotion-bearing device. And the power to which it is utilized and portrayed is purely fascinating to me. 4. Do you plan on advancing your music skills in the future, such as in college or as a career? of beMDTV? The class gives me opportunities to learn and work in the subject that I truly admire and appreciate--video production. I get to work in teams and learn the ropes of both film and television production, and get very in-depth lessons on the how and why of practically everything. It’s a very hands-on experience, which I love, and the excellent teachers let me be free creatively for the most part, as well help me develop and learn in the field of work. 7. I know you’re an awesome movie critic. What all started your passion for critiquing movies? I suppose it stemmed from another passion of mine, which is video games. Around 5th or 6th grade, I got really into following vid- I will continue to do reviews as much as I have time for, and will spout my opinion on any medium I can get my hands on, whether people want to hear it or not! In seriousness, film, as stated before, is a hardcore passion in my life, so no matter how my life goes, I’ll always be talking and writing about movies. I truly just want to be involved in filmmaking in some capacity or another. I’d love to be a writer/director, but at the same time, I’m in love with just about everything involved in filmmaking, including editing, camera work, sound work, and even acting. So I’d love to be a director and writer, but if I end up editing or operating a camera, I’d be happy to be part of the art-creating process. Soak your gauze in tea for a minute and then hang over shower curtain rod to dry. Repeat if bandages don’t come out grungy enough for you. 2. By Corey Hammond and Lauren rieCHes editors-in-chief Halloween Ghost Meringue Recipe: A Ghostly Surprise! Yield: 24 ghosts Ingredients: • 2 egg whites, room temperature • 1/8 tsp cream of tartar • 3/4 cup powdered sugar • 1/2 tsp flavored extract, like vanilla or almond • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate • toasted nuts, coconut, or sprinkles (optional) Preparation: 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Place the room temperature egg whites in the clean bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment (Alternately, you can use a large bowl and a hand mixer with whisk attachments). 2. Turn the mixer to medium-high speed and beat until the egg whites are foamy. Turn the mixer off, add the cream of tartar, and continue beating on medium-high until the whites have turned an opaque white color and hold soft peaks. 3. At this point, start adding the powdered sugar a few spoonfuls at a time with the mixer running. Once all of the sugar has been added, add any extracts you are using and turn the mixer to high speed. Continue to beat the egg whites until they are very thick, glossy, and a shiny white color. When you stop the mixer and lift the whisk out of the whites, the whites should have a very stiff peak. This process will take about 7-12 minutes in a stand mixer. 4. Cover two baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop your meringue mixture into a piping bag fitted with a ½ inch round tip, or if you don’t have this, into a large Ziploc bag with a ½ inch hole cut in the corner. 5. Pipe your meringue into ghost shapes about 1-1/2 inches wide and 2 inches tall. You can either do this by squeezing the bag and pulling up gradually, making one big “blobby” ghost, or by making a series of concentric circles spiraling upward. Pipe 12 ghosts onto each baking sheet, for a total of about 2 dozen meringue ghosts. 6. Bake the meringues in the preheated oven for an hour. After an hour, open the oven door and continue to cook for 30 minutes, then turn the oven off, close the door, and allow the meringues to sit until completely cool, about 1 hour. 7. Once the meringues are crisp and at room temperature, melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring after every 30 seconds to prevent overheating. If you want to coat the bottoms in crushed nuts, sprinkles, or toasted coconut as well, place those toppings in small, shallow bowls nearby. 8. Dip the bottoms of the ghosts in the melted chocolate, and scrape the bottoms against the lip of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. If you’re dipping them in other toppings, immediately press the bottom of the ghost into the bowl of toppings so they adhere to the wet chocolate. Replace the dipped ghost back on the baking sheet and repeat with remaining ghosts and chocolate. Dip a toothpick in the remaining melted chocolate and give each ghost two dots for eyes and, if you desire, a mouth or other features. 9. Refrigerate the ghosts to set the chocolate, about 5-10 minutes. Do not refrigerate them any longer than absolutely necessary, as they will absorb moisture from the refrigerator and lose their crispness. Store Meringue Ghosts in an airtight container at room temperature. http://candy.about.com/od/halloweencandyrecipes/r/meringue_ghosts.htm ENTERTAINMENT 6 NEW SHOWS LINE UP FOR FALL By ERIKA MICHEL assistant editor Even after you finish watching the “Downtown Disney Flash Mob Proposal” forthefifthtimetoday, youwillprobablybe needingsomethingelsetofillupyourfree time.Anewlineupoftelevisionshowswill provetomakegoodcompanyonyourDVR. Every day we are forced to decide and to make choices that could affect our lives, whether it’s in the smallest way possible or the biggest way possible. We are forced to choose how we present ourselves as students and men and women of society. We must decide how we will act and what we will say; we have to choose how we will live each day—whether that is morally or immorally. When it comes to day-to-day decisions, we are forced to decide between cheating and honesty, lying or telling the truth, spreading rumors or keeping them to ourselves, etc. These everyday decisions might not be considered a big deal; however, the choices we make shape us into becoming the individuals that we are. As a result of our teenage way of thinking, and our inability to at times step outside situations, we don’t always realize the effects of the decisions we make. We do not contemplate the consequences and results of our actions, especially when we choose to make decisions we would not be proud of later. The advice that everyone should be given is that every action has consequences, and it is up to us to accept those consequences as a result of whatever choice that we make. A majority of the time, our choices do not usually just effect us, but rather, they have an effect on those who surround us in our lives— especially our parents and/or guardians. In my opinion, the worst punishment is to have your parents tell you that they are disappointed in you. It is the worst feeling to know that you have let down and disap- pointed the people who have tried so hard over your lifetime to instill morals in your life and to raise you and shape you into a person with goals and integrity. It’s awful that one choice, one bad decision, could damage that trust or perspective that our parents have of us. No one wants to let down their parents and letting them down is worse than letting oneself down because, in my opinion, all we want is to make them to be proud of us. All we want is to have them accept us and love us, no matter the choices we make. When we make mistakes and when we choose wrongly, we learn. From these wrong actions, we learn life lessons that can only be understood through experience, which is why at times it’s healthy to mess up. This doesn’t mean that we should live our lives deliberately making bad and immoral decisions; however, it is through our decision-making that we are able to learn and grow into adults of society. With every choice big or small come consequences whether they are good or bad. The effect of the decisions we make teaches us things that we cannot learn in a classroom or be taught by a teacher. In order to be shaped into the person that we will one day grow up to become, we must take every experience that we have dealt with, every piece of knowledge that we gained, and be grateful that we are being given opportunities to mess up and to start over again. From every action comes a consequence; from every consequence as a result of our actions comes a learning experience; and from every learning experience we choose, define and shape ourselves into who we want to become. The Passing of Steve Jobs Now Rests a Great Man of Business By JONATHAN ALVARADO assistant editor On October 5, only a day after the announcement of Apple’s latest product -the iPhone 4S -- the company’s strongest leader and co-founder, Steve Jobs, lost his battle with cancer. Many took to the medium of technology to show their respect. But who was this mysterious man, this turtleneckwearing symbol of innovation? The public mainly knew him as the leader of their house-favored computer company. Jobs, with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, founded Apple back in April 1, 1976. The company grew as a simple maker of simple computers. It had a humble start, with nothing foreshadowing the multinational empire it would one day become. However, what many may not know is that Jobs left Apple in the early years due to a power struggle inside the board of directors. Without Jobs, the company rose, and then sharply fell. Apple struggled with failed products which were unable to gain any momentum of popularity. Jobs eventually returned as an advisor. He isn’t recognized for inventing Apple’s most famous products, but for knowing how to market them. He knew beforehand, as if through a sixth sense, what the market wanted and he knew how to make his products desirable to the world. Jobs pushed his company to keep pushing the envelope by creating things unheard of by others. Jobs strived for more, and without him, Apple may still had been left in the dust rather leading the innovation pack. Even Jobs’ side projects were highlighted for success. Jobs acquired Pixar when it was still young, and look how far it’s gone. The stories created by Pixar, such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo, still live in many of our childhood hearts. Apple grew immensely through the hard work of its people and the strong leadership that ran through it. Each product, whether you are aware of it or not, now Thanksgiving Outreach November 14th to 21nd, 2011 affects most of our daily lives. Through business, through entertainment, and even education (example: Mater Dei’s iPads) Apple is leaving a mark in everyday life. The iPod revolutionized the music industry, removing the need of physical media storages and digitalizing our entire music libraries into the palm of our hands. The Mac remains as a strong competitor to the PC. The iPhone shook the phone industry and brought out the need of reinvention from all other companies. And now the iPad, as silly as it seemed to some at first, created an entirely new industry in technology. Jobs loved the company that he helped nourish. Even during his final months, when he knew that the pancreatic cancer was hitting the best of him, he wanted to remain connected. Even though he hung up his turtleneck as CEO, he kept a lifeline as chairman of the company. No one saw his death coming. They knew it was somewhere in the future, but not so soon. Like a bad omen, the iPhone 4S event foreshadowed his premature passing. Anyone who watched the Keynote announcement on October 4 probably saw the empty “reserved” seat that was present in a couple of shots of the camera. Rumor has it was Jobs’ seat. I don’t want to try to make Jobs sound more than he was. After all, he was only a businessman that most of us never knew. Yet we eagerly looked forward to seeing him on stage, presenting the latest gizmo on the market. It fascinated us that a company of simple, ordinary people could create things so revolutionary that they only seemed possible in our dreams. His death doesn’t mark the end of an era, but hopefully just the end of a chapter. Rest in peace Steve Jobs, your strong messages of never giving up and pushing through will forever push your company and your admirers. Share the love and earn spirit points for your class! CONTINUED-ONS DEAD MAN WALKING, from page 1 In kicking off the Performing Arts productions of the 2011-2012 school year, the cast and crew of Dead Man Walking hope to stir up conversation about the death penalty, both in the classroom setting and out. In addition to selected scenes for all English classes (November 16, 17, 18, 21, and 22), the full-length performances are scheduled for November 18, 19, and 22 in the Monarch Pavilion. The nerves and jitters of opening night will cap off the emotion and excitement that the cast puts in at rehearsals on a regular basis. Brecher adds, “What excites me the most about performing in this play is the fact that I’m playing a very controversial character in a play about a very controversial issue. If the cast succeeds, it has an opportunity to change a lot of minds.” For additional preparation, the cast is applying current events to the events in 9 the play to better comprehend the intensity of this issue that a group of teenagers has not necessarily experienced firsthand. “I am more aware of the death penalty issues going on right now, and that helps me understand the magnitude of the situation that my character is in,” said Cornejo. “It’s hard to understand, since I’ve obviously never been on Death Row or accused of murder,” states Brecher, “but with enough focus and imagination, I basically become another person.” Not every show has the potential and the power to bring to the surface tough issues and execute them in a tasteful yet captivating way. Dead Man Walking does. “It’s not just an ordinary play,” said Cornejo, “I’m excited to bring the audience into this journey that the cast and crew has already begun.” So come out the Monarch Pavilion in mid-November for a show that’s sure to ignite and inspire the MD community. Through Honor, Glory, and Love, the Indian exchange students will always remember their Mater Dei experience. And last, but most definitely not least, was the Homecoming Dance. And let me just say, the long awaited dance did not disappoint; it was--for lack of a better term-magical. The song selection was not only tasteful, but very original; the beautiful decorations completely transformed the Meruelo Athletic Center into an appropriate dance setting; and the Queen with her have the opportunity to learn from their lifestyle and cultures that they brought Scarlet Scroll Staff Assistant Editors Claire Alex Jonathan Alvarado Alex Foy Katie Gaitan Angela Markwith Erika Michel Sasha Mixon Mary Perez Julie Pham Vu Editors-in-Chief Corey Hammond Jillian Morabito Lauren Rieches Jazmine Santayana Photo Editor Corey Hammond Adviser Tanya Katnic Clubs on Campus: Get Involved!
