acclaimed artist John Banovich, who graces Friends of
NRA for the first time as artist of the year. For the
2007 Print of the Year, Banovich depicts a scenic
pasture of elk and cows as they graze upon the field.
Set against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains
enshrouded by clouds and forest, he uses delicate
colors and wide-ranging sizes to show the magnitude
of nature. Palettes of light and dark show depth and
provide a sweeping view of the landscape. Golden
leaved trees draw the eye back down to the
seemingly small animals in the peaceful pasture.

Artist Biography: John Banovich
John Banovich is among the most renowned wildlife artists in the United States. He specializes in large oil
paintings of African game, but his subjects cover all continents of the globe. He began sketching images of wildlife while growing up in
the copper-mining town of Butte, Montana. As a youth, he painted animals on pieces of antler and fashioned the pieces onto bolo ties,
earrings and belt buckles. These mini works of art were inspired by the elk, deer and other wild animals hunted by his father.

The rams in Leroy’s painting sit royally on the mountainside, posing
for the artist. The crisp winter air is conveyed through Leroy’s use of
