At the October 2015 MMTC general meeting, all of Mira Mesa’s Principals will be in attendance to share the coming year’s events and global information. Sadly, there is always a ‘subset’ of students and parents who do not receive much public notice for school events, resources, awards or attention. As more societal awareness is being shared today among consumer rights, human rights, animal rights, etc… I would like to take a moment to take down the veil of ignorance and sometimes ‘shame’ for students and their families whose struggles go beyond getting ‘good grades’ for 13 years in order to climb the ladder of triumphant social norms that define ‘academic success’. I am speaking about the 15% of students in Special Education. Students whose parents do not always proudly proclaim, “ Yeah, MY child got a C”, even though that child may have worked 3 times harder for a C than the ones getting the A’s. From 1977 to 2012, Special Ed. student populations increased by over 50%. This is not necessarily because an alarming number of students with disabilities increased, but rather societal changes in early detection, better Special Ed. resources, family awareness, and especially social stigma has allowed for some of the increases. Special Education generally covers a wide variety of disabilities including physical, emotional, and other less visual but often more common, ‘learning disabilities’. To be more precise, The National Center for Education Statistics includes data on 14 specific learning disabilities: Speech or language impairments, Intellectual disability, Emotional disturbance, Hearing impairments, Orthopedic impairments, Other health impairments, Visual impairments, Multiple disabilities, Deafblindness, Autism, Traumatic brain injury, Developmental delay, Preschool disabled (nces.ed.gov/ fastfacts/display.asp?id=64) Just because a child does not ‘look’ disabled, does not matter! Awareness is the focus of this article. Many high school students enjoy an annual tradition for presenting college scholarships awards. It is a special night filled with bright eager hard working students with high GPA’s who are moving on to respectful 4 year universities. Those students deserve those scholarships for all their effort, but in their shadows are students who worked just as hard, sometimes just to simply attend school every day. Too often, the efforts of Special Education students are somehow viewed as substandard in the eyes of society. In college, financial aid does not respect Disabled Student Accommodations for ‘less units’ during a semester and will lower the financial award even though Special Ed. student needs are repeatedly more severe. Parents of Special Ed. students are often lost when it comes to knowing how best to help their child. Two very important ideas to help a child are PARENT ADVOCACY and UNDERSTANDING. Parents are busy, yes, but Special Ed. Students regularly drop out of high school because they fall too far behind by 10th grade. DO NOT expect the school system to support the individualized needs of each child. Find out about Parent IEP day…Involved Exceptional Parents (www.iepday.org). It is an annual event sharing a wealth of support for special ed. families and students. Parents support their child by educating themselves about all the resources San Diego offers within SDUSD and in the community. Parents may want to begin with a few of the websites included in this article. Every Child can SUCCEED, they just do it DIFFERENTLY! www.understandingspecialeducation.com/ www.parentcenterhub.org/repository/lg1/ www.specialeducationguide.com/pre-k-12/tools-and -research/support-and-resources-for-parents-andteachers/ By Donna Carter Maybe the article above moves you to help change things, or the fact that Mira Mesa is involved in major plans for the Teen Center or the Stone Creek building project (miles of new commercial and living community in MM). The MM Town Council website has a listing for all your government officials (www.miramesatowncouncil.org/elected_officials.htm) or join the MM Planning Group (see calendar). I truly hope everyone came out to enjoy the event this year. A cooler day would have been nicer, but Sunday was even hotter and Monday threatened rain. Over all, it was a day full of festivities so we’ll see you on September 17th, 2016 for another great day of local community fun! While on the subject of the Street Fair I must stop and mention three groups. First, the Street Fair Committee led by Jeff Stevens begins planning in April by working with City employees, vendors, and service providers to get everything together for the third Saturday in September. Jeff should probably write a book entitled The Third Saturday in September relating some of his more interesting street fair experiences. Things do get a little crazy. The other two groups who deserve our praise, in no particular order, the Mira Mesa High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Cadets and our generous sponsors. As I have said many times, the cadets are the engine that makes the Street Fair run. Without their hard work and enthusiasm putting on a street fair wouldn’t be possible. Each sponsor donates either money or goods and services. Submarina and Sandwich Emporium, for example, each donated sandwiches to feed the cadets—fuel for the engine. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity. Here is a list of our 2015 sponsors. Diamond Level: Vulcan Materials Company Western Division; Garden Communities; Magic 92.5 and Jammin’ Z90.3 Emerald Level: Hanson Heidelberg Cement Group; Mira Mesa Living Magazine Ruby Level: Mira Mesa Office and Medical Mall; Vons Stores; Sandwich Emporium; Submarina Sapphire Level: Callahan's Pub and Brewery Opal Level: Bamboo Flooring by Cali Bamboo; My Glam Jam Nails; Scripps Pediatric Dentistry The dictionary has many definitions of “community”. Interestingly, the first one generally refers to, “…a group of people who live in the same area…” After that the definitions all diverge into areas of commonality, but MM is special. While we all live in a welldefined area, we have many ethnicities, religions, races, and creeds, yet here we are living in peace and harmony with most of our kids going to the same schools as our neighbor’s kids. Frankly, I have never lived anywhere where there is less strife. The new Principal of Mira Mesa High School, Jeff Sabins shared this. The battery of tests taken in our school district last year were not particularly popular. Nonetheless, the average score across all schools was around 50 percent. Scripps Ranch, did a great job and registered a score of 64 percent. Mira Mesa High’s score was 80 percent; a score only exceeded by one other, La Jolla at 81 percent. So, not only do we have an incredibly diverse and complex community, we also have schools that continue to receive honors, schools so good that each and every student has nearly boundless opportunities to learn and grow academically. While it takes good facilities and fine teachers to make this possible, I submit the key ingredient is YOU, the parents and students, who make our community and its schools first-rate. So pat yourselves on the back and keep up the good work. I’ll see you at the Town Council Meeting on October 5 where we will host all the Principals from our local schools as they share what is special about each one. The Mira Mesa Town Council will again be taking nominees from the community to fill the seats for the November elections for the MMTC Board. If anyone would like to get involved and help make our community even stronger, come to the October 5th meeting and place your name on the ballot. Ted Brengel Mira Mesa Street Fair Sep 19, 2015 Mira Mesa Town Council Newsletter Page 3 Boost to SDPD Bike Patrol On Saturday, September 19 at 12:00pm, Councilmember Chris Cate presented $10,725.90 in City funding to the San Diego Police Department’s Northeastern Division for the purchase of five (5) new patrol bicycles. “As Vice Chair of the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, investing in public safety is one of my top priorities. It is essential we equip the men and women in our law enforcement community with all the tools necessary, and this includes patrol bicycles. These new patrol bicycles will allow police officers to be more accessible and approachable in densely populated areas and events,” stated Councilman Chris Cate. Rockin' Jump, an indoor trampoline park, located at 8190 Miralani Drive, will have its grand opening on November 5th. Attractions will include a large freejump trampoline arena plus arenas for trampoline dodgeball, X-Beam, Basket Ball Dunk lanes, rope swings, jump pits, and a toddler-only jump area. Jumpers will also enjoy a Vertical Ops Rock climbing wall and an outdoor mini-golf course. There will be an on-site cafe providing a venue for parties of all ages and occasions. Also providing dynamic corporate team-building events. The Rockin’ Jump team is excited to be part of the Mira Mesa community and will be working closely with local schools, churches, youth groups and youth sport teams. Their plan is to provide fitness designed as fun and strive to offer a family friendly environment for kids of all ages. The hours are M-Th 3 - 8 PM, Friday 3pm 11pm, Saturday 10am - 11pm and Sunday 11am 8pm. Special jumping for Rockin' Tots on Tues. and Wed. 9am - 11am & Saturday 8am - 10am. Every Friday evening is Kids Night featuring Rockin' Fridays for kids 11 - 17 years old only. Prices are $10 to $20 for 30, 40, 90 or 120 minutes of play. Rockin Tots is $15 for one parent and child and only $3 more per each additional child. Rockin' Fridays is $15 per person. Did you see them at the MM Street Fair? Mira Mesa Teen Center… Then and Now?… from September MMTC meeting With Harmonium closing the teen center, we need to make sure RSVP can continue operations. RSVP headquarters share the Teen Center building. The building was built in 1976, and was the original Mira Mesa Library. It is 40 years old next year. The groundbreaking for the new library was in 1993 and it opened in 1995. The community had meetings to decide what to do with old library building. We had problems with teens needing a place to go after school instead of hanging out at malls and causing problems. Harmonium developed the Teen Center in the old library building. Bruce was chairman of the board of Harmonium at the time. Building needed a lot of repair. Mira Mesa community fund used to pay for repairs. The money came from a Pardee/Shapell development agreement. $2 million. Restricted to capital improvements within Mira Mesa. Still have $393,000 in fund. There is also $500,000 in a City account – interest used to pay for teen center operations. To date have made about $800,000 of improvements. At first the Senior Center didn’t want a Teen Center next door. MMTC started RSVP and located its headquarters in the same building, which then received the senior’s approval. Nancy Sherman led Harmonium – she was full of energy and ideas and ran the center from 1999 until retirement in 2005. Management of Harmonium lost focus on center after this. Had sound studio, computers, teens helping other teens, lots of good programs for a number of years targeted to teens. City didn’t charge much rent, but utility costs, insurance and staff added up. Harmonium is nonprofit – spun off profits from Klassic Kids to support Teen Center. Put in more than $200,000/year. Finally too much for them – vacating Nov 1. Margaret and John took care of landscaping that had become derelict – very nice now. Déjà vu all over again – need to decide what to do with building. Theatre Guild would like to do productions; civic center; ‘xeriscape’ garden. Since the building is in the heart of our community, want something positive and quickly. We have access to the remaining money in fund plus the $500k in City fund. Committee is going to determine what Mira Mesa wants to do with building and how we are going to pay for it. If teen center it requires paid staff. Need to have personnel w/ qualified background checks. If we do nothing, the City decides the highest and best use for property which could end up as another fast food restaurant. Need a place for community meetings. Anyone interested needs to attend the Information meeting at 6:30pm on Oct 1 in the Mira Mesa Library. If it becomes used for commercial activities, might lose RSVP office. Take proposal to MMTC, Rec. Council, Planning Group.
