New from Race Ramps is its all-new Portable Pit Stop which

always done side jobs out of home shops where they had been
able to do things their own way. Realizing that working for someone
else is not the same as doing it your own way, Wes started his
own business and then this past summer he teamed up with Rob,
moved into a new location, and created Big G’s Autobody and
Restoration with the goal of providing people with quality work for
price tags that wouldn’t scare customers away.
T
here are probably a ton of people out there with an old hot rod
or muscle car sitting in their garage or backyard who wish they
could restore it back to its full potential, but unfortunately doing so
usually costs a pretty penny. Brothers Rob and Wes Piatocka of
Big G’s Autobody and Restoration out of Abbotsford, B.C. believe
they have a solution for some, by offering quality work at a morethan reasonable price. They will do everything they can to make
sure you get your vehicle looking the
way you want, while sticking to your
budget.
Both Rob and Wes got early starts
to their autobody and restoration
careers with Wes having completed
his first paint job on a car at age 18,
and Rob starting to work at Spectrum Autobody at around the
same age. After that, Rob got his bodywork apprenticeship and
finished it by working at Don Beck Collision and then moving
on to Kirmac Collision. Wes, in the meantime, worked at Maaco
Collision Repair & Auto Painting where he says he really learned
how to finish jobs quickly, without sacrificing any quality while
doing so. In addition to that, both brothers have spent time in the
Caribbean honing their craft, with Wes spending five years doing
so, and Rob stopping by to help a few different times.

while doing everything
they can to work to their
customer’s budget. Some
of the ways they achieve
this is by pointing their
customers in the right
direction to purchase their
own materials so that they
don’t have to sell it to them at a marked-up cost. Another factor
in keeping the price so low is the sheer speed at which they get
things done due to their 60-plus combined years in the business;
Rob and Wes know exactly what to do, and the best way to do it.
There isn’t a situation they haven’t seen, and not one they don’t
know how to deal with.
One example of both the quality of work and the diversity of jobs
they do is a 1936 Bentley owned by a mutual friend that they
helped convert from a 4-door hardtop to a 2-door convertible with
suicide doors. Another friend of theirs had put in a total of 3,500
hours’ worth of work and when it came time to do the paint and
bodywork on the car, they decided to call up Big G’s. Rob and Wes
surely didn’t disappoint as the final result is a stunning machine
that will definitely turn heads at any car show.

SEMA Show Continues to Grow
T
he 2013 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show took place from November 5th to November 8th at the Las
Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year’s show left no doubt in anyone’s mind that the automotive specialty equipment industry is stronger than ever. Organizers of the show report that more than 126,000 credentials were issued prior to the show, with
thousands more being processed onsite, which represents a seven-percent increase over the previous year, which is the highest year to
year gain in SEMA Show history.
There were 2,381 exhibiting companies on the show floor, representing all facets of the automotive specialty equipment market. A total of
60,000 buyers, mostly from small businesses, also attended the show to connect with the exhibiting companies. Another highlight of the
show was the over 2,000 product entries into the New Product Showcase, with the best products receiving special recognition.
SEMA SHOW 2013
This year’s show had it all, from incredible hot rods all the way to
massive lifted trucks. Many celebrities also attended this year’s
show such as Willie Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty, Richard
Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman from Discovery Channel’s Fast N’
Loud, and legendary car builder and Batmobile creator George
Barris just to name a few.

Replica Ford GT40

A
s any Ford lover will tell you, the Ford GT40 captures the attention and wins hearts like no other. In the past, when Ford
was faced with negative press...think Pinto or Explorer tires... they
could have made replica GT40s that would instantly overshadow
all problems. Look at the clamour over the Ford GT. It was not
called the GT40, as Ford somehow forgot to keep the copyright
on the name....they just built them, raced them, and forgot them.
Eliminator he built with his son. Kremyr’s talents are legendary
in the racing industry, including his own 1957 T-Bird which was
very well known and competitive in D/Altered until the original
Mission dragstrip closed in 1978. A couple of other stellar projects included Dave Richardson’s 1972 Ford Capri that finished
No. 7 in NHRA Super Gas in 1992, and Joe Delehay’s first 1972
Chevy truck that ran as a Pro Mod in the high-6 second range.
Luckily, one company did not forget them, and CAV out of Cape
Town, South Africa has been making replicas for a number of
years using a Stainless Steel Monocoque frame with a 1965
Ford GT40 body made from vinylester fibreglass. Vinylester
is stronger and more stable than conventional polyester resin.
B.C.’s Dwain Kremyr, carnut and race car fabricator/drag
racer, always wanted a Ford GT40, and in his business he
got to work on many tribute cars including numerous Shelby
427 Cobras and Daytona Coupes. Always bringing his own
special talents to the task, designing and fabricating many
suspension components in his shop, Kremyr Racing, in Cloverdale.
Family projects have included his wife’s 1966 Mustang Shelby
clone (she’s owned the car since 1973), and a 1970 Cougar

GT40s (check out cavgt.ca). Purchasing the car in January 2009, it
took him a year just to develop and build the suspension and custom uprights. Fabricating patterns in-house for the parts needed,
they were then cast and brought back for machining in-house.
The car’s stainless steel chassis has some custom touches done by
Kremyr and the suspension is all custom. The front is double wishbone, built from 4130 tubing, while the rear is a four-link independent
suspension. Rod ends are aircraft-quality throughout the car, as are
all the fasteners. Both front and rear uprights are custom built inhouse, as are many other parts of which there are too many to list.
The shocks are Penske 8300 series coil-overs, with spring rates of
550# front and 750# rear, custom-built for the car by Chris Billings at
The Shock Shop in Oregon. A custom braking system using 14-inch
full-floating rotors, Brembo six-piston billet calipers and a Power
Brake Corp. electric power brake system are more than adequate.
After the track closed and building race cars tapered off, Kremyr The GT40 is powered by a 363 c.i. small block Ford built by

at the 2008 SEMA Show from Mothers Wax and Polish. One of
his favourites was a 1965 AC Cobra Custom 4130 chromemoly
tube chassis car for Vern and Fred Welsh. This car featured many
custom pieces designed and fabricated by Kremyr, and more
knowledge was gained for his own project.
His brother was at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France in
the summer of 2007 and brought him home lots of memorabilia,
including a stack of brochures on the CAV GT40 out of South
Africa. That was it – the seed was planted! He was like a dog
with a bone, and nobody was going to deny him the opportunity.
The importing of the CAV Ford GT40 chassis was not an easy task.
It took 1-½ years to get MOT to allow the car into Canada, and after
all the hassle, Kremyr became the Canadian Dealer for the CAV

with a TWM eight-stack EFI System wired by Dave Hartnell
and tuned by Bill Bowering at Indy Speed. A stainless steel exhaust system with 180-degree headers completes the engine.
Harnessing all this power is a five-speed ZF Replica Transaxle made by
Quaife Engineering in England. To keep true to the spirit of the GT40, the
interior is trimmed in black leather on custom-made seats, including all
the cooling grommets. Black wool carpets are a luxurious departure from the spartan race car, as is a heavily soundproofed
custom firewall to keep the interior quiet and safe from the
motor just inches away. That being said, the custom sound
system comes from the Ford engine and 180-degree exhaust.
The custom wheels are three-piece, using centres made
from billet by TCS using Kremyr designs. The inner and
outer halves are from BBS. The fronts are 10x17 with 255
Kumho tires, and the rears are 13.5x17 with 335 Kumhos.
Wanting to stand out from the standard red or Gulf colours, the
paint is a Lamborghini Tangerine tri-colour, picked in memory
of Dave Smith, whose golf cart got painted that colour just to
see how it would look. Painted by Mike Ballendyne at Jasper’s
Custom Body and Paint in Langley, it won Best Paint at the Vancouver Collector & Custom Car Show in Vancouver in June 2013.
The car was finished in September 2011, just a little too late
to be accepted as an entrant into the 2012 Carmel by the
Sea Concours on the Avenue in Carmel, California. It was
on display in the Shelby owners group display at Laguna
Seca Raceway during the Montery Historic Races in 2012.
The car drives amazingly well and is well-mannered when in polite
traffic, but can become the monster it was designed to be when
appropriate. It has only been driven under 1,000 miles, due mainly
to Kremyr’s business taking up most of his time.
If you have the opportunity to see this striking GT40 up close and
personal, you’ll see what an amazing craftsman Kremyr is. Now
he’s looking forward to re-restoring his ’57 T-Bird, and building out
his ’63 Falcon Ranchero for a shop truck. You know they’ll be done
with the love and attention to detail that he is renowned for.

that sold for an eye-catching $148,500. With only
1,935 ever built, a 1970
blue-and-white Plymouth Superbird pulled in
a sweet $134,200, while
an intensely black one-off
custom 1969 Chevrolet
Camaro Coupe brought
a more than very respectable $128,700. And there
was no shortage of old school classic trucks on hand either….’30s,
‘40s and ‘50s….. but it was a 1955 never-shown, brand new, sleek
silver Ford F-100 Custom Pickup with the famous 429 engine that
stretched the bank at $132,000. Another standout was the 1999
Chevrolet Suburban from “The Sopranos” television series (Seasons
1-4) which inspired a $110,000 bid and will be followed by the offering of the late James Gandolfini’s 1972 Oldsmobile convertible
at the Scottsdale auction January 12-19 2014. Yet, probably one of
the more surprising results to some, was the meticulously restored
1964 Volkswagen 21-Window Samba Bus which yielded an impressive $110,000….yes,
a VW Bus.
In addition, as part
of Barrett-Jackson’s
long standing charitable efforts, several
cars were auctioned
off, one of which included the highest
sale of the entire
event. A 1957 Lincoln
Continental Mark II
sold for $700,000 to
benefit Loma Linda
University Children’s
Hospital, a 2012
Shelby GT500 “SuperSnake” went for
$500,000 with all
proceeds provided

Support fund, and
famed Las Vegas
performers Siegfried
& Roy were in attendance to receive a donation from Barrett-Jackson as well as audience contributions in the amount of $95,000 to
support their SARMOTI foundation which protects threatened and
endangered animals.
A daily Automobilia Auction also saw some interesting action. As
to be expected, the vintage visible gas pumps and porcelain neon
signs attracted the most attention, and incredibly, an extremely rare
1926 Butler Model Polly Gas pump restored by McLaren Classic
Restorations sold for a whopping $46,000. A large 1950s Firestone
Tires sign went for $28,750 and a 1940s Chevrolet Super Service
garage sign brought $25,300.
And then if you happened to
have a mere $23,000, you
could have picked up a late
1940-50s restored Cadillac
Dealership sign, a 1950s
Mercedes-Benz dealership
sign or a very unique Shelby
Refrigerator (a.k.a. “Coberator”) completely restored with
an authentic V8 sound when the door is opened….really, you just
have to smile.
In the exhibit hall was a vast array of vendors but there was only
one that hailed from Canada, and it was premier automotive artist Michael Irvine, from Southern Ontario. On display were limited
edition reproductions from his original watercolour paintings that
depict precisely detailed muscle and sports cars set into an almost
surrealistic type of landscape or background scenes, and these
impressive car prints were definitely attracting a steady stream of
visitors to the booth. There was also an autograph signing by iconic
racer Don Prudhomme with the Snake & Mongoose cars, and next
to the exhibit area was the Ford- and GM-sponsored Ride ‘N Drive
where show participants were able to take a quick passenger test
drive in the featured vehicles
like a Corvette racing car.
The real point is that even if
you are not a bidder, there
are plenty of cool things to
see and enjoy at a BarrettJackson auction, and with
reasonable ticket pricing (under $25 per day for general
admission at the Las Vegas
show) it seems like an event
that every car enthusiast should eventually consider having on their
travel ‘To-Do’ list. And with the 43rd Annual Scottsdale Auction
coming up right around the corner on January 12-19, 2014, you
have just that chance.
“Cool Cat” 1969 custom Cougar convertible, one can
only imagine that
the 2014 Scottsdale
auction will live up to
everything we now
expect and appreciate about BarrettJackson Collector
Car Auctions. So
do yourself a favour and set the date in your calendar. And if you
can’t be there, Barrett-Jackson has reached yet another milestone
by now providing expanded live broadcasts on the Fox Family of
Networks in the USA while it continues to offer coverage on the
SPEED Channel for viewers in Canada. So settle in, turn on the
TV and watch your dream cars sail across the auction block…it
really is the next best thing to being there.
Having previewed Scottsdale’s remarkable Salon Collection at the
Las Vegas show which included a 1955 Talbot-Lago T26 Gran Sport,
a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray L88 and a 1954 Plymouth
Belmont concept car, as well as other consigned cars like a very

F
rom the moment Michael Irvine released his very first print
in 1994, Evolution of a Legend, it was, in a sense, his
lifelong passion for American muscle cars coming full circle.
The print was in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of
the Mustang, but in a way it also commemorated the beginning
of Michael‘s transition from a successful commercial illustrator to embracing a career that embodies his love of cars that
has been with him since childhood. And isn’t that the dream
– “Find something you love to do and you will never work a
day in your life.” Most of us know the quote but to actually
live it, and make a living, is often another thing all together…
yet Michael Irvine is not only doing it, but since committing
full time to his artwork in 2006, he has become one of the
most recognized and appreciated automotive artists in North
America.
A graduate of the Graphic Design program at Grant MacEwan
College in Edmonton, Alberta, and now a resident of Southern
Ontario, Michael’s original watercolour paintings are known
for their classic muscle car imagery and their technical accuracy. With titles like, Reflections of Horsepower, Blast By
The Past and Pure As The Driven Snow, his limited edition
reproductions are hand-signed and numbered. Michael diligently researches every original detail of the cars to ensure
the paintings reflect historical correctness relative to factory
options, and he also considers how the colours of various
cars will work together in a painting. The scenes are then
developed with the intention of telling a narrative that is essentially fantasy based. With his three ‘They Came With the
Farm’ paintings, for example, Michael commented on how one
could imagine “you purchase a farm, but haven’t fully explored
the property and when you go out you find all these cars…
it’s a surprise.” And how great would that be for a car person.
Michael acknowledges “I like cars and am making something
that resonates with like-minded people. I don’t want to overuse
the word but I really am passionate and love cars. It excites
me to execute a painting from concept to finish and then to
see the excitement of the people who appreciate the art.”
Another aspect of Michael’s paintings is the addition of hidden details that can be discovered over time, that is, if you
really, really know your cars. Take the Mopar Farm Series
for instance; one may not notice on first glance that through
the barn door there is a replica of a Dodge Dealership inside
or that the rare Boss 429 Mustang in one of his works has a
clock on the dash painted to read 8:59 which was the total
production number for the original cars built (859). With this
level of thought and detail, it is understandable that Michael
usually completes just four paintings per year and since he
is not a portrait artist copying directly from photographs but
is primarily painting from his imagination, he is able to accept only a limited amount of commissioned work due to the
time demands – but it definitely is an option, if a one-of-kind
original painting is what you have in mind.
When describing what motivates him most, Michael said,
“It’s when the art stops them in their tracks and they go
‘wow’… that’s very powerful when you can do that to
people without saying a word. It’s the art that draws
the people in;” and according to Michael, the patrons of
his artwork “really runs the gamut.” From a seven-year
old boy who, instead of a ‘Game Boy’, was insistent on
purchasing a limited edition print with a 1970 Roadrunner in honour of his father who had passed away; to an
increasing number of women who are becoming a huge
percentage of his clientele - “it’s not just for guys anymore,” he said. There are a lot of women who were original owners of muscle cars or appreciate classic cars, and
Michael thinks of them as ‘drivers’ relative to his artwork
not just on the periphery of the car culture. He also feels
that women seem to respond to the watercolour medium
and some of the floral aspects in his paintings.
Active in the collector car hobby, Michael appreciates
all muscle cars and has owned many, but ever since
driving down his street as a teenager in his first 1970
light blue Mustang and a little kid on the block gave him
a ‘thumbs up’ and yelled out “cool car” – Mustangs have
remained close to his heart. When, later on, he spent
his student loan money on a ’68 Mustang convertible,
red with black top, his mother was less than thrilled, that
is, until she got behind the wheel. And currently he has
a 1971 Firebird Formula as well as a Lime Gold 1967
GTA convertible among others, but when asked what
his number one dream car would be today…you got it,
it’s an Acapulco Blue 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with a 1970
Dodge Challenger in high impact Plum Crazy Purple
running a close second… and then, of course, a long,
long list of others.
In the end, Michael Irvine says, the most important point
is “I’m a car person, I really enjoy cars and what I do is
not just a means to an end to make money.” Basically,
he sees himself as a guy who just hasn’t grown up and is
staying a kid forever….. and that is just fine with him. But
one would have to believe it’s even more than fine, for
all the classic car enthusiasts who very much appreciate
the youthful passion he brings to his artwork – and are,
in turn, then able to bring some of that spirit into their
own lives through his wonderful paintings.
