We’ve all had to do it sometime and we all know it’s usually a thankless task so why not be the best you can be at it? It not only improves your hockey knowledge but can improve your own game and will save you money paying for an umpire. How many players complain about the umpiring yet don’t volunteer to umpire? If you’re interested in umpiring contact Steve Emery. They are not directly related to Hockey WA but work with them. While it’s great to see so many new faces it’s also heartwarming to welcome back the old ones! The State Schools’ hockey championships take place each year for both 12 years and 16 years boys and girls. Each year the tournament is held in a different state and will be in Cairns in August 2016. In 2014 in Hobart the WA 12 year old boys won the silver medal and in Perth in 2015, the bronze. They are looking to lift the gold from the perennial favourites, Victoria but in truth, all states are hard to beat. In this section of the newsletter we turn back the clock and remember those past club members who have returned to read what they’ve been up to and get an idea of the good ol’ days. Troy Rule, Lion Hearted Troy last played for Whitfords in 2003 after being at the club for 5 years. Troy left due to health issues but after watching a friend’s Masters game against Whitfords decided that he missed the camaraderie. It was also a way of getting fit after recovering from his health problems. The first 2 trials have been held with the list of 90 boys reduced to 36 for trial 3 in early May. This Troy said team sports keep you honest – you don’t want to let your mates down. will be further reduced to 16 after trial 4. David Moroney and Barry O’Sullivan, from Whitfords are two of the selectors assisting coach Richard Ewen to choose the best 14 boys. Richard and manager Tracey Hunt then have less than 3 months to try and build the team into a competitive unit. During this time they will play at the Southwest carnival in Bunbury and in the Hockey WA Regional or Club championships. Playing against slightly older boys is a great way to toughen the boys for the 5 day championship. The Tournament is a great way to start players on a pathway to further success and for them just to enjoy fine competition and adventure for a week. Masters' National Championships These will be held in Hobart for the Women and Adelaide for the Men this year. Whitfords always has a number of representatives in the various teams and hopefully this year will again see the club represented in the State team. It really is a great experience to represent your State in these championships so please consider nominating. You have to be in it to win it! The dates are Hobart, 7th to 15th October and Adelaide, 24th Sept to 8th October. To nominate go to the Hockey WA website, www.hockeywa.org.au, click on Masters and follow the links. For more info have a chat to Pauline Molloy, our star Australian representative, Dave Moroney (newbie), or Len Collier (oldie but a goodie). Whitford Hockey News – April 2016 Changes he noticed at the club were that in his day the 1’s played mostly on grass. Now they are all on turf and the past 1’s players are old enough to play masters. Things that hadn’t changed in his time Crackers, Flex, Baz and “lefty” Moroney. He said it was great to see the progress of the new Warwick Hockey Centre. He was on the committee when there was talk about the new clubrooms and turf. Troy and his wife Monica have started a Self-Managed Superannuation Consulting business after leaving the public service in 2013. They are also both members of the 501st Legion. Although you can’t see him, in the photo above, Troy is dressed as a storm trooper. Welcome back to club champion – Sam Cameron After captaining the ladies 1’s to an undefeated year (they won all their games) in 1993, Club Champion Sam Cameron returns to Whitties again playing for the Ladies 1’s Promotion team. Sam played for Whitties from 1989 through to 1993 before moving to the country. Sam is still living in the country however makes the trek up to the city to play and train for Whitfords. Like Troy, Sam also relates how things have changed in the club, especially since when she played she was team mates with Gerry Kennedy and now plays in the same team with Gerry’s daughter Rikki Stringer – some 23 years later! It’s great to have you both back – Troy & Sam Page 4 Dinner Arrangements For those lucky enough to have reserved tickets to the Club’s Fundraising dinner, in addition to Australian coaches Adam Commens and Graham Reid, we have received confirmation that Kookaburras, Mark Knowles, Kieran Govers, Tyler Lovell and Chris Ciriello will also be attending. We will have the Hockeyroos but as yet names aren’t finalised. Tim Gossage unfortunately is a late withdrawal due to commentating commitments however we have acquired the services of Hockey Australia’s Commercial Partnerships Manager, Shane Tonkin. Shane is an experienced MC & will bring his A‐Game to help us on the “ROAD TO WARWICK”. Whitford Hockey Club would like to thank all local businesses & club members for their donations & sponsorship of the night Whitford Hockey News – April 2016 Page 5 Fundraising Dinner – On-line Auctions coming soon Spotlight on club sponsor – John Griffiths Is it true that you were the club’s first Treasurer? Yes How has the club changed in your time? The club has increased substantially with numbers of teams and players‐particularly women’s teams and seniors. It also has taken on a great family focus Your team mates have been together a long time, give us some insights into what that means to you? I keep playing due to the mateship‐hockey is a team sport and the pleasure comes from playing in a team of friends with the social aspect of course. What is the secret behind your hockey playing longevity? Enjoyment of the game and playing with an established group of teammates. Any special moments in your illustrious playing career? I would not use the term illustrious to describe my playing career. The highlights were more from humorous moments on the field which was funny at the time. Some background on your company C&G Accounting Services is a small accounting firm specialising in audits of self‐ managed superannuation funds; not for profit organisations; sporting clubs; trust funds, etc Whitford Hockey News – April 2016 Page 6 The Whistleblower Hi everyone! Before I start, I’d just like to say thanks to everyone who participated in the grass carnival last weekend. I gave 4 junior umpires their first runs as umpires – and umpiring a bunch of us Seniors is a challenge at the best of times let alone for a young kid at their first time. Thanks folks for looking after them. So for this article, I thought I’d talk a little about umpiring Juniors. Whilst Juniors have mostly the same rules as seniors, the key word is “mostly”. Each age group has its own variations – for example 5/6s only play halves of 25 minutes. What it means is that when you’re umpiring juniors, you’ve got to know which rules apply! The variations are in the Junior rules listed on the HWA web site. One of the most important rules for Juniors is danger. The 5/6 and 7/8 rules in particular state that the rule against dangerous play must be strictly applied and then goes on to give specifics. We must always remember that the whole point of juniors is for the players to enjoy and learn hockey SAFELY. And in juniors that’s everyone on the field. Just because one player may be able to “throw” the ball well or do great tomahawks, doesn’t mean that the players in the ball’s flight path are good enough to get out of the way/handle the ball. The same standard has to be applied to everyone. Reward good play, yes, but make sure that everyone is protected. What’s better? 22 players going “huh?” or 21 standing around someone on the ground? Note what I said about junior hockey. As umpires, we’re also there to help the players learn about the game. Unlike seniors who (should) know why a penalty was given, most juniors, especially young ones, don’t know. So make sure when you’re umpiring, you use your voice and say why the penalty was given – “FOOT”, “OBSTRUCTION” etc….. It will help you as well as everyone on and off the field. For me I suppose, the 3 biggest mistakes that new umpires make are not having LOUD whistles, not using LOUD voices and not being in the right position. New/junior umpires often get caught in the corner or on the side line trying to umpire the D. You can’t. Umpires, as the ball is crossing the 23, we are already inside the D and we stay in the D till the ball goes back across the 23. One thing about Juniors that we all need to remember is that Juniors is usually the place where new umpires start out. This means that the umpires that Juniors get are often young kids just learning the art themselves and are usually more nervous than the players! Whitford Hockey News – April 2016 Throughout the season, at all levels, we’re all going to get umpires that are obviously having a bad day or might need to clarify their understanding of a particular rule or two. In the Juniors, spectators please, please, please do not encourage or partake in any abuse on the sidelines or tolerate any bad behaviour on the field. This includes curbing one’s desire to “assist” or “explain” a rule to the umpire at half time or full time. One of the key reasons we have such trouble getting umpires is because of that sort of behavior. It also means that when your son/daughter runs into an umpire like me and doesn’t behave, they get to spend a lot of time watching rather than playing….. Remember too that one of the key skills that junior players need to learn is to play the whistle and accept the umpire’s decision, irrespective of what they might think about the decision. The game’s rules – particularly with self play – are designed such that it is a distinct disadvantage for a player to stop playing whilst waiting for a whistle, appealing or discussing the point with the umpire. At the top levels, coaches drag players because it is so costly to the team in turn overs or the player going off. Umpiring Quiz 1. So what is the rule about danger? 2. What happens when the captain is sent off? 3. When the goals are positioned on the backline, where do you put the goal posts? The back of the line, the middle or the front? 4. What is the maximum amount of times that a player can be substituted in a game? 5. The ball, having been played by an attacker in the circle, is crossing the goal line before being knocked back into the circle by the goalie. Decision?
