Caring for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans
FROM THE WIDOWS’
COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
Dear friends
Greetings from England.
I cannot believe it is now April and
Easter is here, followed by the
ANZAC Day commemorations
and services around the world. In
Melbourne we remember the 100th
anniversary of the first ANZAC landing at Gallipoli
and those who lost their lives during and following the
landing in Anzac Cove.
The monthly concerts are a great outing for widows'
clubs. Legacy House is close to public transport or
arrange a bus through your branch's transport officer.
I value the work of all Legacy widows’ clubs and enjoy
reading what is happening at them in The Answer. I
also love the photos so if your club is having a special
function please have photos taken and forward them to
Melbourne Legacy for possible inclusion in The Answer.
Noelle Pratt
FROM THE WIDOWS’ CLUB
CO-ORDINATOR
Hello ladies
This year is well underway and Easter
is just around the corner. Having
three children at home it's always an
exciting time with chocolate bunnies
and hot cross buns, and also a time
to remember the religious
significance of this time of year.
Plans are well underway for Legacy Sunday on 30
August. This year we will be having lunch at the MCG
in the Melbourne Cricket Club members' dining room,
which is a lovely venue. The registration form to attend is
on the back cover.
If you have any enquiries please contact me on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays from 9.30am until
3.00pm on 8626 0500.

FROM THE EDITOR
Hi everyone
Happy Easter! I hope everyone has
time to enjoy the 4-day long weekend.
My plans include getting away but not
sure where as we went to print.
My poppies for the '5000 Poppies'
project have been submitted. If you
get a chance to see the display at
Federation Square on ANZAC Day do
it. It will be spectacular!
Cheers

THE ANSWER
LEGACY WIDOWS’ PRAYER
We pray for help and guidance
To keep us safe and well, and to be
kind to one another.
Also help us to give support to those
who need it.
AMEN
IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe,
To you from failing hands we throw
The Torch: be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields
Lt Col John McCrae (1872-1918)
(A Canadian Artillery Medical Officer, who died
on 28th January 1918 whilst on “active service”
in France. He is buried at Wimereux, France.)
THE ANSWER
Fear not that you have died for naught;
The Torch you threw to us we caught!
And now our hands will hold it high,
Its glorious light shall never die.
We’ll not break faith with you who lie
On many a field.

Hello everyone
I would like to share with you the contents of an email that a
friend sent to me recently.
'The Train’
At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we
believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some
station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on
this journey alone.
As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will
be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the
love of your life. Many will step down and leave a permanent
vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realise they
have vacated their seats.
This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations,
hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having
a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give
the best of ourselves.
The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station
we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way,
love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important
to do this because when the time comes for us to step down
and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful
memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of
life.
During this month one seat on the Legacy train will be
vacated as the Chief Executive of the past 12 years retires (as
mentioned in February edition).
However, the seat will not remain empty because we welcome
Mikaela Stafrace as the new Chief Executive Officer to
Melbourne Legacy.
I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success
and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the
journey.
Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train
and look forward to you continuing with me as I continue my
journey as the President of Melbourne Legacy...

SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE
April to June 2015 Calendar of Events & Exhibitions
Victoria’s Journey of Remembrance (2 Sessions)
Sunday 12 April, 12:00pm
Melbourne Legacy Student
Ceremony (ANZAC Day For Students)
Gallipoli
Each year prior to Anzac Day, Legacy holds a
special service for school students. This service,
first held in 1932, combines education with
commemoration and is attended by thousands of school children annually.
August 2014 marked one hundred years since the commencement of the First
World War (WWI). As part of the Victorian Government’s Anzac Centenary
program (2014-2018) a free community roadshow – Victoria’s Journey of
Remembrance - has been touring the state.
Thursday 16 April, 6:00pm
Now approaching its centenary, the Gallipoli campaign, commemorated each
year on Anzac Day, reverberates with importance as a symbol of what it truly
means to be Australian. Peter FitzSimons, with his trademark vibrancy and
expert melding of writing and research, recreates the disaster as experienced
by those who endured it or perished in the attempt.
ANZACs on the Wall
Thursday 23 April, 11.00am
Bearing Witness
Thursday 30 April, 12:30pm
Charles Bean was Australia’s greatest and most famous war correspondent.
He is the man who told Australia about the horrors of Gallipoli and the
Western Front, created the Anzac legend and was central to the creation of the
Australian War Memorial.
The Second Battle of Krithia: 100 Years On
Sunday 19 April, 2:30pm
Once again the Shrine welcomes, Jim Brown and Vince Brophy to perform
on the Lone Pine Guitar. Singers, songwriters and entertainers, Jim and Vince
present to us ANZAC On The Wall. Their performance includes songs, poems
and stories about our ANZACs.
Anzac Day Film Screening: Gallipoli From Above
(3 sessions)
Saturday 25 April, 9:00am
Gallipoli From Above follows the Australian officers who planned the landing
at Anzac Cove and the aircrew whose flimsy flying machines brought back
the much needed information on which those plans were based. Director,
Wain Fimeri, will join us and introduce the film. 3 sessions: 9.00am, 11.00am
and 2.00pm
Bookings are essential for all lectures: [email protected] or
www.shrine.org.au or (03) 9661 8100. Entry by gold coin donation
Friday 8 May, 2:00pm
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Second Battle of Krithia,
Christopher Wray will speak on the events of the fateful afternoon of 8 May, 1915.
Gallipoli VCs
Tuesday 19 May, 12:30pm
Gallipoli, most well-known for the landing on Anzac day, was also a place
where our ANZACs distinguished themselves. 10 Victoria Crosses alone
were awarded to the Australian and New Zealanders in the 8 months that the
ANZACs were on the peninsula.
The Real ANZAC Girls
Thursday 18 June, 12:30pm
From photos, emotive diaries and letters, Susanna de Vries AO relates the
previously concealed story of the bungled evacuation of the wounded from
Gallipoli.
Legacy partners up with Berger Paints
Over three sunny Melbourne days, 16 volunteers applied 90 litres of paint to transform Meryl Johnson’s
weatherboard home in Eltham.
Mrs Johnson was nominated for Berger’s 'Paint for a Mate' initiative, established in partnership with
Legacy to lend a helping hand to war widows who are unable to maintain the upkeep of their home
exterior.
Mrs Johnson and her late husband Stanley, who served in WWII,
built the house in 1954. The exterior was last painted 30 years
ago.
Coordinating the project, David McNamara from Berger, said it
was great to have so many volunteers on site including local trade
painters that donated their time to help.
'Bringing a tired home back to its former glory was an amazing
experience, but nothing compared to the smile and words of
thanks from Mrs Johnson.
'We’re looking forward to helping other worthy recipients across
Australia over the coming months.'
This is the first home in Melbourne to be painted through the
Berger community program. More than 40 homes across the
country will be transformed by the end of the year with paint
supplies and materials donated by Berger.

Timeless Age
THE ANSWER
The years of life slip slowly by,
Bodies in foreign soil do lie.
It was answered by men small and tall.
Danger was met with or without fear
For they remembered loved ones far and dear.
Suffering was great but spirits did not break.
Backs did bend a mate’s hand gave lend
They sloshed through sand and mud.
Peace they were seeking for one and all
As each bore suffering at bugle call.
Each Flander’s poppy represents a drop of blood.
As if shed by each soldier where he lay
To seep in mud, sand and clay.
This we will remember forever and a day.
The Aussie soldiers stand straight and tall
For they remember mates who did fall.
Faces hold memories of hell let loose
Bodies bore suffering of savage abuse.
Families at home gave prayer and tears
For the safe return of ones so dear.
Freedom was won by each mother’s son
Who stood firm and brave before each gun.
When the dawn breaks on ANZAC Day
It can never be said they had feet of clay.
Please God do not let it happen again.
For at the going down of the sun, we will remember them.

Summer is over and so is one-sixth of 2015. We had some sad news over the
Christmas/New Year break - three of our ladies passed away. Ada McNally had
attained the great age of 101; Betty Laurie and Jeanette Jacobsen had both held
executive positions on the committee over a number of years. Their wealth of
knowledge and work within the club will be sadly missed. We had Janet Kearns,
occupational therapist, speak at our February Meeting on safety in our homes.

Our ladies enjoyed another birthday lunch in February with special guests Dot

this month as there are several ANZAC commemorations for us to attend. We
collected donations for the Cancer Council at our May meeting when our speaker

Due to a mix-up at Footscray library we were unable to have our February
meeting. Members went out to a Chinese restaurant for lunch instead. We were
sorry to lose our treasurer, Olive Fogarty, who passed away in January. Our

trip will be to 'Cottage by the Sea' in Queenscliff on 8 April. To all ladies who aren't
well we hope you will be better soon.
It was a happy first meeting in February as we caught up with friends we had not Co-ord
seen for many weeks. Indeed, it was a very special gathering as we celebrated
Marjorie Mason's 90th birthday. In mid-April we will join other Outer Eastern Clubs
and Legatees on a trip to the Yarra Valley to enjoy gourmet food and a glass of

Healthy Eating for Older People
A guide for living with diabetes
Are you an older person living with diabetes?
The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) has
recently released a booklet that provides information
about healthy eating for older people.
Maintaining healthy eating habits can be challenging
at any age. However, as we get older obtaining the
nourishment that we need to stay healthy can be
more difficult.
Our appetites may be reduced and chronic diseases
like diabetes can add to the challenge of staying
healthy.
The booklet is easy to read and covers topics such as nutrition and daily food needs, healthy weight ranges,
loss of appetite and how to gain weight if you are sick, frail or have lost weight.
The Healthy Eating booklet also has meal plans, recipes and tips for shopping and cooking for one or two.
This booklet provides general information only.
If you would like a copy of this book please contact the NDSS Infoline on 1300 136 588.

The new Legacy camp included air

tailored facilities suitable to cater for
our dependants with a disability, many

participated at the Legacy summer camp

Phillip Island Summer Camp
20-27 January 2015
One of the highlights of the holiday
was an evening on the beach waiting
for the penguin parade. Some of the
braver campers loved the adrenaline
rush they got on the flying fox rides
and went back for repeated thrills.
Several the campers enjoyed being
up close to koalas on the day they
picnicked at Koala Park (pictured
right).
Experiencing music and dance,
dabbling with paints and other
artistic pleasures, a game of cricket
or volley ball is what people do on
organised camps and this group
was no exception. The beaches on
Phillip Island are fairly shallow and
suitable for people who are not strong
swimmers. The campers enjoyed
spending time on the tranquil coastline
on more than one occasion.
The camps would not be possible
without the involvement of our
dedicated and enthusiastic team of
support workers. These volunteers
donate their time, talent and energy,
both in the planning stages and during
the running of the camp.

Thursday 23 April 2015 at 11.00am – 12noon · Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne
Join Legacy in remembering the men and women whose sacrifice
in wartime has enabled Australians to live in peace and freedom.
The Governor of Victoria has been invited to address the students and other guests.
• Please arrive at the Shrine by 10.30am
• As a symbol of remembrance attendees will receive a sprig of rosemary
• A programme given out on the day will outline the order of service
• Please provide water containers, hats and sunscreen and/or wet weather gear
• Please do not leave any litter behind and help us keep the ground tidy
The Shrine Forecourt (hedged area) is designated by law as a sacred and commemorative area.
Guests are therefore not permitted to eat in this area. The Shrine suggests a picnic in the Royal
Botanic Gardens nearby or grassed area south of the Legacy Garden.
While seating will not be reserved, it would be appreciated if you would register your
intention to attend by phoning Legacy on 8626 0500 so we can endeavour to provide adequate
seating. As 2015 is the ANZAC Centenary we anticipate a record number of attendees.

Between the Dances
by Jacqueline Dinan
Between the Dances is an eclectic collection of short
stories from the women who lived through World War 2.
Revealing personal conversations with over 300
remarkable women, it highlights the irony of women
embracing challenge and opportunity presented by this
devastating war.
Between the Dances depicts a poignant revelation
of the thoughts, emotions and experiences of
a generation of women who gave inimitable
commitment to their country. It provides excellent
material for historical study of the time.
Tamie Fraser, AO
2015, the 70th anniversary of the end of World War 2, is
an ideal time to explore how women contributed to the
war effort, all the while worrying about the welfare of
their men, yet relishing the next dance.
I loved it when the soldiers were in town. Dances
at the Castlemaine town hall were much more fun
with them - woollen mill worker, Audrey Stewart.
THE ANSWER
Melbourne-based author Jacqueline
Dinan, interviewed women around
Australia - from cities to remote
rural communities to collect their
unique accounts of ‘doing their
bit’. As nurses in war zones,
members of the services, workers
on the land and in factories,
volunteers in community service,
managers in organisations,
housewives juggling a ration
book, and others overseas who
endured the Blitz or internment by
the Japanese.
The accounts are enhanced by poignant, amusing and
insightful anecdotes along with scores of previously
unpublished and unique photographs from personal
albums.
Jenny Walker, CEO of Legacy Australia, launched the
book at the Shrine of Remembrance on 8 March, which
was International Women's Day.

T
he annual Legacy at Huntingdale
Charity Golf Day on Friday 23 January
2015 was a resounding success with both
the morning and afternoon fields totally
booked out. Golfers always enjoy playing at
the prestigious Huntingdale golf course and
the newly-refurbished clubhouse helped
make this year’s event extra special.
Proceeds for the day exceeded $28,000, which was
a record amount. The competition was a men’s and
women’s Individual Stableford. Players were invited
to enter the 'Legacy at Huntingdale' Perpetual Club
trophy, which was won by Wellington Links Golf
Club.
The charity golf day would not be possible
without the support of the volunteers and Legacy
acknowledges the staff from NAB who assisted our
Legatees.
Legacy is very grateful to Huntingdale Golf Club
who have allowed Melbourne Legacy the use of
their golf course for over 82 years. It is estimated
that during this time proceeds of over $1million
have been raised.
