High School Adjusts Schedule for OGT’s
During the week of March 11, 2013 through March 15, 2013, our high school will
be giving the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) to its sophomore students beginning at
8:00 A.M. each day. As we did last year, we will be adjusting the regular day schedule
in the high school. From 8:00 A.M. until 9:50 A.M., our freshman students will
participate in practice OGT’s. Our sophomore students and a few upper classmen will
participate in the State’s Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). Also, our juniors will particpate
in a State required Financial Literacy Curriculum. First Federal Bank is instrumental
in providing this instruction. Our seniors, during this week, will not be required to attend
school until 9:50 A.M. By running this adjusted schedule, we are able to have all of
our students meet with each of their teachers and classes throughout the entire week.
Without this adjusted schedule, our sophomore students would miss an entire week
of morning classes due to their participation in the State OGT’s.
Ohio All-State Choir
Senior Joe Baker was selected for the Ohio All-State
Choir, which performed February 8 at the Ohio Music
Educator’s Association Professional Conference in Columbus. The choir was conducted by Joe Miller, director
of two of the most renowned
choirs in America: the
Westminster Choir and the
Westminster Choral Ensemble. Congratulations!
Message from the Superintendent
The Governor has released his budget proposal for the next state biennium. As
a part of this, he has released his new school funding system. Prior to the release of
his new funding system, rumors concerning its makeup raised some concerns for our
district. Three areas of major concern dealt with the reimbursement of Tangible
Personal Property Tax (TPPT), the Guarantee, and the funding of open enrollment
students. All superintendents in the state were invited to Columbus to hear the
Governor’s initial announcement of this system. At this meeting the Governor made
several comments that seemed to ally some of our fears with the new system. First,

the Governor promised that no school district would receive less state funding over the
next biennium than they were currently receiving from the state, and secondly,
although he opposes the current method of funding TPPT reimbursement, the
Guarantee, and open enrollment funding, he has pledged to maintain the current levels
of funding in these areas for the time being, suggesting major changes in the future.
Upon hearing the initial, basic details of this system, I was relieved that it appeared
that we would at least not be facing a decline in state funding at this time. While our
portion of state funding is minuscule, coupled with rising costs and declining property
values, any loss of state revenue would be detrimental and force us closer to making
cuts to programs and staff and/or seeking additional local revenue. Based on data from
the state predicting school districts state funding for next year for the schools in
Hancock County are:

In determining state dollars, the state takes into account the property values in
the district and sets a level of expected local funding. While this formula is the basis
for the large discrepancy between us and other local school districts, declining
property values put us in a precarious position.
The $331,511 that we are predicted to receive from the state can be broken out
into specific categories. Almost half of this money ($154,368) is earmarked for
Students with Disabilities. $1,173 are to be used for students who do not speak
English as their primary language, $25,110 for Economically Disadvantaged Students, and $49,950 for Gifted Students. This leaves $104,910 given to us as a
Guarantee, maintaining a level of funding from the 1990"s as an assurance from the
state (similar to what the Governor is currently stating) that no school would receive
less money than they currently receive. As you can see, 2/3 of what little funding we
do receive from the state is earmarked and can only be spent in specific areas.
Past history has shown that new school funding systems rarely look exactly like
the initial proposal. The budget, including the school funding system, must be ratified
by the State Senate and State House of Representatives before being signed into law
by the Governor. We will continue to watch and monitor the situation in an effort to
protect the interests of the Van Buren School District. If you would like any additional
information on school funding, please contact the Treasurer or me. We would be
happy to try and clarify all aspects of school funding and their effects on our district.

Senior Class Fundraisers:
The Van Buren Senior class is sponsoring several fundraisers in the months of
February and March to raise money for a class trip to Kalahari and Cedar Point. The
seniors will be selling Mixed Bag designs at the end of February (see any senior for
catalog). They will also be sponsoring fundraising nights at Texas Roadhouse
(February 20) and Buffalo Wild Wings (March 6). Each of these restaurants will be
giving the senior class 10% of your total food purchase. Special fliers need to be
presented when your bill is paid. Fliers are available online and from the high school
office.
The final fundraising event is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament co-sponsored by
NWO. The tournament will take place on Friday, March 8 at 6:00 P.M. in the high
school gym. The cost per participant is $10 and the teams will be determined by a
random draw. There will be a male and a female division. Only Van Buren students
in grades 9-12 and teachers will be able to participate. Participant forms and waiver
forms will be available in the high school office and Mr. Zender’s office. All forms with
payment are due by Friday, March 1, 2013. No late forms will be accepted.

Vaccination Information from the Hancock County Health Department
It is once again time to start thinking about vaccinating your children for the
upcoming school year. Any child entering kindergarten or 7th grade will need vaccine
updates prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year to be in compliance with the
Ohio Revised Code guidelines. Tdap is now required for the students entering the 7th
grade. Along with the Tdap vaccine we would encourage you to consider the meningitis
and chickenpox dose 2 vaccines for any child age 11 through 18. We continue to be
concerned about the resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) which is the reason
for the Tdap requirement. These vaccines are available at most physician’s offices or
here at the Hancock County Health Department. If you are interested in scheduling
for vaccinations at our office please call 419-424-7869. I would strongly encourage you
to call and get these scheduled now. Please don’t wait until August to get this taken
care of.

Those juniors planning on going to college after graduation are encouraged to
take the ACT test at least once before entering their senior year of high school.
Sophomores should also think about taking the ACT at the conclusion of this
year. The April 13 testing deadline is March 8 and the June 14 testing deadline
for registration is May 3.
This is the time of the year when scholarships for seniors start coming in on
a regular basis. Seniors should stop in the guidance office weekly to pick up
applications. Also, all Hancock Community Foundation scholarships are
available online at www.community-foundation.com.
Scheduling for next year is taking place this month. It is important that the
student, parent, and teachers are all involved in the student’s course selection
for next year.
There will be a scheduling meeting for all 8th graders in the high school cafeteria
on March 6 at 6:30 P.M. We will be selecting classes for those students
entering Van Buren High School as a freshman for the 2013-2014 school year.
The student and at least one parent are expected to attend. If you are unable
to attend the meeting, you need to contact Mr. Zender in the guidance office.
Information is being sent home with all Van Buren 8th graders on February 25.
If any student in grades 8-11 is interested in taking college classes next year
through the post secondary education options program, they need to contact
the guidance office by March 31 to participate. Information has been sent
home with the students with their scheduling information.
Reminder that OGT tests will be given the week of March 11 to all sophomores
and upperclassmen still needing to pass a section. It is important to get plenty
of rest and nourishment that week.
All 8th graders will be visiting Millstream on March 19 to view the new facilities
and see possible educational options for the future.

Yearbook Orders
Thank you to all who purchased a copy of the 2012 Knight. Last year's staff put
in a lot of hard work to create a book that our community can be proud of, and this year's
staff is working hard to do the same.
The 2013 Knight will include the high school and middle school, and the 2013
Squire will included elementary events. The price for the HS/MS yearbook is $55. A
student can have his/her name stamped onto the book for $5, and protective plastic
covers can be purchased for $3. The price for the 2013 Squire (elementary) yearbook
is $20. Unfortunately no extras can be purchased with this as it has a softcover. A
student can fill out the form on this page and give it to his/her teacher (elementary) or
give it to Mr. Bratt in Room 235. When your student makes an order, please make sure
that if he/she is paying by check, the check is made payable to the 2013 Knight and/
or 2013 Squire for the number of books purchased.
Another purchase option is to buy online. Simply go to www.vbschools.net, click
on the Buy a Yearbook button, and follow the on-screen instructions.

4-H Clubs are Accepting New Members
The 4-H year is just getting under way here in Hancock County and
we are inviting youth to join in the fun. We have two clubs here in Van
Buren and the names and contact information are as follows: Millstream
Farmers 4-H club is lead by Kathy McGrain, 419-889-4944 and they
meet in the Van Buren High School Community Room at 6:30 P.M. on Wednesdays.
Rocky Ford Guys and Gals 4-H club is lead by Deb Brown and they meet in the Van
Buren Elementary at 6:30 P.M.on Tuesdays. Both clubs usually meet twice a month
and will have a full schedule for the year that they give to members at their first meeting.
The 4-H age requirement to be in a club begins when a child is at least 8 and enrolled
in 3rd grade as of January 1 of this year and continues and includes high school seniors
that are 18 years of age as of January 1. The county also has a Cloverbud Club available
for those that are 5 years old and enrolled in kindergarten as of January 1 through 2nd
grade. These meetings are held once every other month at the Hancock County
Extension Office located at 7868 County Road 140, Findlay. For more information
about the Cloverbud Program, please contact the office at 419-422-3851.
What is 4-H? It is the ultimate youth development experience and it is what you
make of it. You can simply participate in things with your club, or you can get involved
with other 4-H members throughout the county, and there are even many opportunities
to get involved and participate in 4-H at the state level. With an expansive network all
over the United States, 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization. In
Hancock County we have about 50 clubs and approximately 900 youth enrolled. There
are lots of fun things you can learn in 4-H and in a variety of ways, but 4-H fosters an
important “learn by doing” approach. You can participate in 4-H through clubs, camps,
trips, activities, projects, and in leadership roles. You can work in teams and gain new
levels of responsibility and communication skills. You can learn about animals,
computers, public speaking, cooking, art, gardening, environmental sciences, money
management, sewing, woodworking, fishing, gun safety, and many more subjects that
are included in over 200 projects that are available for members to take. All 4-H
programs focus on active involvement and quality experiences which will help to
stimulate lifelong learning of values and skills. The clubs are lead by trained adults that
work within the scope of the Ohio State University Extension program.
These pivotal experiences that 4-H members have will build a foundation of
leadership and skills for success in their future careers. To learn more about the 4-H
program, go to the county website at hancock.osu.edu or contact Kathy or Deb.

Price of the 2013 Squire in FULL COLOR (coverage of the
elementary school)
The Academic Boosters want your old cell phones! The Academic Boosters are
having a cell phone drive to raise funds to support our students, staff, and scholarships.
Unlike other fundraising projects, there are no products to buy and distribute. All we
are asking is that you donate any cell phones that you have at home. Also, if you know
of any businesses that provide cell phones to employees, please ask if there are
unwanted cell phones they would like to donate. We don’t even need the chargers or
accessories.
There is no cost to the school to participate in this program, so 100% of the
proceeds will benefit the Academic Boosters.
Our goal is to send off our first batch of phones on March 8, 2013. We will receive
our money promptly, so please help us out by bringing in your old cell phones. All we
need is the cell phone and battery; chargers and other accessories have no value.
Come on, what else are you doing with your old cell phones? Help support the
Academic Boosters by bringing your old, used cell phone to school and placing it in
one of the white and green collection boxes located in the high school, elementary or
superintendent’s offices.
Please fill out the following form and return it to your teacher (elementary) or
Mr. Bratt in room 235 (middle and high school). Thank you, and enjoy your
yearbook!

Preschool Openings Available for
2013-2014 School Year
Preschool classes for special needs students
have been available to our students for several
years.
Enrollment in the preschool class as a special
needs student requires screening to establish the
presence of developmental delays or other special
needs. The Hancock County Educational Service
Center will hold a county screening for 3 and 4 year
old children for whom there may be concerns in the
areas of gross or fine motor skills, speech-language, or conceptual development. If you know of
any child that might qualify for this program, please
make an appointment by calling 419-422-7525,
ext. 231 by March 15, 2013. Pre-registration is
required for this screening.
These special needs classes have provisions
to includ a limited number of “typical developing”
students also. This number is 12 students for the
2013-2014 school year. A typically developing
preschooler would be described as any 3 or 4 year
old child who is developing appropriately (socially,
physically, and verbally) according to their age.
These children will serve as peer role models for the
children in our program who have special needs.
Currently, tuition for “typical students” is $85 per
month.
Parents interested in enrolling their child for
participation in the “typical” program should complete an application by March 22, 2013. Not all
children will be accepted only 12 typical students
will be placed in the preschool for next year.
Please contact the elementary secretary, Mrs.
Murphy, or the preschool teacher, Mrs. Shelly
Barger, ([email protected]) if interested
at 419-299-3416.

2nd and 3rd Grade Christmas Musical “The Nutcraker Suite”
On December 20, the 2nd and 3rd grade performed their musical “The Nutcracker
Suite” in front of a packed high school auditorium. The music was written by the
famous composer Peter Tchaikovsky and arranged by Sally Albrecht. There was
memorable music and dances by the Sugar Plum Fairies, the Chinese Dancers,
Russian Dancers, Arab Dancers, Reed Flutes, and Flowers, while the narrators told
the magical story. The fighting scene between the Nutcracker (Clarence Durliat), the
Mouse King (Jacob Deiter), and all the soldiers and mice made for an exciting triumph
for Clara (Elise Fenstermaker). The students enjoyed putting on the musical and will
always remember this when they hear the familiar songs from the Nutcracker each
Christmas.
Humane Society Art Contest
On January 19, 2013, the Hancock County Humane Society hosted its first Art Contest in conjunction with its annual Pancake Breakfast. Van Buren
Elementary students were invited to participate. During art class, students discussed how art could be
used to help others. They discussed how featuring
homeless animals in their artwork could spread awareness and hopefully find a home for these animals.
Amber Pisarsky, DaZlyn Nguyen, Morgan Johnson, Morgan Johnson for winning
Ali Bishop, Max Greenawalt, and Alex Gearhart were first place in her age group!
selected to have their artwork entered in the contest. Congratulations to Morgan
Johnson for winning first place in her age group! Students in first through fifth grades
worked very hard on this project and raised enough awareness that one animal,
“Stella”, a boxer-mix, was adopted by a fifth grade Van Buren student!

Girls Basketball Daddy/Daughter Day
The girls’ basketball team
held its first annual Daddy/
Daughter Day on Saturday,
January 12, to allow the dads to
experience a day in the life of a
girls’ basketball player. In addition to practicing with the girls,
they were taught basketball fundamentals and the team’s offensive and defensive philosophies.
Thirteen dads participated
in pre-practice workout, fastbreak drills, conditioning, defensive rotation, and free-throw
shooting. Through all of this, all serious medical traumas were avoided!
To end the practice, the dads were taught the two-clap Lady Knight end-of-practice
cheer.
The tradition will continue again next year, so basketball dads should get in shape
to prepare for next season’s Daddy/Daughter Day!

hours to the elementary classes. Extra forms will be available in both the elementary
