Our latest report card rates the Van Buren Schools as “Excellent with Distinction”. Of the 600 plus public school districts and numerous private and community schools through out the state, only 74 school districts received this rating. This rating is the result of hard work, collaboration, and a strong sense of pride and responsibility that defines the students, staff, parents, and community of the Van Buren Schools. I am often asked to explain our success at Van Buren. People often want to know what programs we are running or what methodologies we are employing. The reason for our success is people. Many of the other schools who ask me this question discover that they are using many of the same programs and techniques that we are using. I attribute the difference to being the people involved and the attitude that they take in achieving this goal. Community support and expectations of the school, parents’ belief in the importance of education, hard work by the students, and a positive highly motivated attitude of the staff make this rating possible. A heart felt thank you to everyone for making this possible. The new parking lot has helped to improve the beauty and functionality of our school. The old lot was in need of major repairs. Everything has been completed in the new lot except for the installation of the new lighting which is currently back ordered. The primary focus of the design of the parking lot was centered on the safety and security of our students. The traffic patterns were designed to create the safest possible environment for our students. All school traffic was diverted to entering the school premises from the rear entrance to the school. This way the front parking lot’s use was limited to high school students and parents dropping off and picking up their child. I realize that there is a traffic back up many mornings just before school begins. The two biggest contributors to this back up are everyone trying to enter the lot all at once during a very short time period and individuals dropping off student’s one car load at a time. We do not have the space to create a three lane entrance to the school, and creating more than one drop off lane would jeopardize the safety of students by causing students being dropped off in one lane to cross in front of cars in another drop off lane. Altering ones drop off time by a few minutes may help to alleviate this congestion. Another action which would be helpful is for more than one car at a time would discharge students. Currently what we have observed is that as a line forms one car pulls up to the turn near the elementary and lets students out of the car. That car leaves, the next car pulls up to the same spot, and then lets students out of their car, and so on, and so on. What would increase the efficiency of the process would be if three or four cars would let their students out at the same time. This would result in the line moving faster and not backing up as far as it sometimes does now. After slowing down for the summer, the strategic planning process is back up and running. Many of the five action committees have been meeting and developing plans. We are still in need of some community members to step up and participate on the school finance committee. Please contact me by phone 419-299-3578 or email [email protected] if you are interested in this committee. Page 6 Knightly News Middle School News October 2008 Elementary News News from MS Principal Jay Clark WEB Welcomes Class of 2015 to VBMS Our students are working hard to make VBMS a place “Where Everybody Belongs”. WEB leaders, a group of eighth grade mentors, trained over the summer in preparation for their sixth grade orientation day. Using a number of activities, the WEB leaders instilled the culture of a school where students feel invited to learn. Additionally, WEB leaders are charged with carrying this into their daily lives not only as WEB leaders, but as 8th grade students. On the first day of school, WEB leaders wore their shirts so sixth graders could feel comfortable approaching them with questions. Thanks to Mrs. Huffman, Mr. Bunn, and the WEB leaders for making the start of the year special. Their work isn’t finished — the WEB groups will meet throughout the year for social activities and follow-up sessions. Sixth grade students and their WEB leaders work on an activity at 6th grade orientation Coffee Talk with Clark: Middle School Parent Coffees Our first coffee in mid-September centered on the important aspects of a school meeting the needs of young adolescents. Thanks to the parents who were able to make it! Parents and interested community members are invited to discuss middle school matters over a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. We hope you are able to make it as we work through the “’tween” years together! The next coffee is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 at 7:00 P.M. in the community room. Please RSVP to [email protected] or by calling the school office (419-299-3384). I was the First Astronaut to set foot on another Planet? On September 18, 2006, Anousheh Ansari captured headlines around the world as the first female private space explorer. She also earned a place in history as the fourth private explorer to visit space and the first astronaut of Iranian descent. She blasted off for an eight-day expedition aboard the International Space Station as part of the Expedition 14 crew of the Soyuz TMA-9, which included NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin. This was the accomplishment of a lifelong dream for her. While in space, Anousheh wrote a blog that invited readers to share her experience. This summer, Anousheh sponsored a What If? Competition for all students throughout the United States in grades 1-5. The competition challenged students to write a creative letter to a friend or relative describing either a trip to a planet or describing a planet to visit. Out of the many entries received, three Van Buren Students placed! Congratulations to Kailee Missler who received second place in the 1st – 2nd grade level competition and Callie Spears (first place) and Cole Ohlrich (second place) in the 3rd – 5th grade level competition. They will be recognized at an awards dinner in Dallas, Texas. To see their entries and photos, please visit: http:// www.anoushehansari.com/education/whatif.php Lights… Camera… Action VBMS Video Announcements Premier August 25 Thanks to the technical expertise of Mr. Kniss and a dedicated crew of students, Van Buren Middle School enjoys daily video announcements that are broadcast on our classroom televisions. A number of students and classes have gotten involved — from writing commercials to serving as “anchors” for the broadcast. This project is such a terrific relevant opportunity for our students giving them an authentic audience for their writing and speaking skills. We all know that the toughest crowd to address is our peers. Mr. Kniss spent the summer learning new software and preparing the “studio” (his office) in the elementary building. This includes a camera, lighting, a green screen, and teleprompter. Thanks to Mr. Kniss and our budding broadcasters for their work! Parents and community members are also welcome to view the broadcast on the middle school webpage. This is updated daily at about 10:00 A.M. Eighth grader Alexis Kelley rehearses the video announcements. Students are gaining valuable experience in front of the camera while delivering vital school information to their peers. Knightly News October 2008 Page 7 Elementary News Knights’ Fest is Friday, October 31! On October 31 from 12:00 noon – 2:30 P.M., the Van Buren Elementary will be hosting “Knights’ Fest” in the elementary gym and cafeteria. This activity will be open to all Van Buren Elementary students, their parents, younger siblings and community members. This festival will highlight the Middle Ages theme. All students will dress in a costume that represents this time period instead of dressing in traditional Halloween costumes. On the day of Knights’ Fest, the students will be enjoying a medieval luncheon. Parents and younger siblings are invited to line up along Main Street at 12:00 noon for the “Grand Parade”. Please note that parking is available on Main Street and side streets, if the parking lot is full. Please avoid parking in the bus garage area. At approximately 12:15 P.M., the King and Queen (Mr. Lehman and Mrs. Murphy) will be introduced to the townspeople (families waiting outside) and the parade will begin. The parade will travel from the stop light in front of the school to the town square and back. After the parade, everyone is invited to the auditorium in the high school for a medieval musical performance by the 4th and 5th grades. Following the performance, everyone will travel to the castle for games (located in the gym) and crafts (located in the cafeteria). Once in the elementary, no strollers will be permitted in the cafeteria and gym. A stroller parking area will be provided. All Festivities will end at 2:30 P.M. Students will then return to their classrooms to prepare to go home. Please keep the following information in mind as you prepare for the festivities. · No swords are allowed. · Avoid parking in the bus garage area. Parking is available on Main Street and side streets. · After the performance in the auditorium, please allow students and teachers to return to the elementary first. Guests may follow. Talk with your child to designate a meeting place that is in the Grand Hall. · No strollers will be permitted in the cafeteria and gym. · If you are picking up your child, you must send a note to your child’s teacher. Students may be picked up after the festival at your child’s classroom. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILD WITHOUT CONSULTING HIS/HER TEACHER. Come frolic in the castle! Due to safety laws, we must account for all visitors during Knights' Fest. If you will be attending Knight's Fest, please list the names of all visitors and bring this ticket with you to turn in at the elementary office. This will help you avoid a long sign-in line. Thank you! Our Post Office Visit On Thursday, September 18, Postmaster Ed Wymer visited the 2nd grade classrooms. Mr. Wymer informed the students of the various stages that a letter goes through after you drop it in the mailbox. The students had a lot of questions for Mr. Wymer! He showed them a number of different stamps with a variety of designs on them. He then let them postmark their own package! He provided each student with an envelope of U.S. Mail goodies! The following day each class walked to the Van Buren Post Office and Mr. Wymer gave them a tour of the post office. We each deposited a letter that was being sent to someone special at home! Thanks to Mr. Wymer and his assistant from North Baltimore for sharing their time with us!
