With a little something you didn’t expect. 75th Anniversary Fall ‘ 1 4 W inter ‘ 1 5 It’s our National Shoe began in 1939 as a small shoe store on the corner of Howley Road and Broadway and a vision in the mind of its founder Nicholas Alteen. A few years later the company relocated from the small store to a larger location a few doors away on Broadway. In 1953, after the Broadway fire of November 1952, National Shoe moved across the street to the larger Alteen Building where it is presently located. The company began a Wholesale Division in the late 1950’s and established wholesale customers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Nicholas Alteen died in 1960 and his brother Lou Alteen assumed leadership of the company. The company continued to expand and established a Safety Equipment Division selling to the industry throughout the province with a branch location in Goose Bay. The company is now operated by David Chaffey, son-in-law of Lou Alteen, who is also a Canadian Certified Pedorthist and now operates Pedorthic Clinics in Corner Brook and Halifax, NS. Products our clinic provides: Diabetes Pain and swelling in first toe joint & ankle Some people living with diabetes might experience reduced circulation or sensation in their feet and may not be able to feel if something in the shoe (or even the shoe itself ) is irritating their foot. If the foot is irritated by the shoe, it can result in a wound or ulcer which can be dangerous and could ultimately result in hospitalization or worse amputation of a lower limb or foot. Metatarsalgia Loss of sensation and decreased blood flow The main symptom of metatarsalgia is pain at the ball of your foot when standing or walking. It is often most noticeable during the push-off phase and improves with rest. It is sometimes accompanied by sharp or shooting pain in your toes or even numbness and tingling in your toes. Plantar Fasciitis Pain in joints at ball of foot Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common heel problems seen by Certified Pedorthists each year. The problem is caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a broad, fibrous band of tissue attached to your heal and spans the entire bottom of the foot & attached to each toe. Pain in heel or arch of foot Other treatable conditions include Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, patello-femoral knee pain, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, bunions, Cerebral Palsy, and Multiple Sclerosis. These conditions are treated with biomechanically supportive and accommodative devices like soft or rigid orthosis and therapeutic footwear.
