CENTRAL SPEAKS Rebel Yell
School Board to Decide Fate of Historic Gym
Central Private
September 4, 2014 • Daily News at CentralSpeaks.com
Citizens Offer Cooperation
In the true spirit of Central,
citizens with a vision to save the
1927 Gym located on the site of
the original “Central School” are
volunteering their time, fund-raising
ideas, and whatever support is needed
should the School Board decide to
preserve this part of Central’s history.
This Monday night the School Board
is scheduled to vote to tear down
the building as part of the ongoing
demolition project, or to allow this
preservation effort to be launched.
Envisioning the 1927 Gym
as a home for a Central area Museum
and Cultural Center, organizers of
the effort to restore the building have
not wavered in their commitment to
the project. However, it can only
proceed with the blessing and support
of the School Board. Since the
School Board owns the building and
property, any long term plans would
very much involve the cooperation of
these School Board Members.
Dave Freneaux, who with
his wife Mia have found themselves
leading the effort to “Save the Gym”,
shared “We have an opportunity
to join hands with the School
Board and take on a project of this
magnitude for the benefit of the entire
community. A vote Monday night in
support of Historic Preservation and
the encouragement of the Visual and
Performing Arts would be a great
legacy for these elected officials.”
If the School Board does vote
to join in partnership with citizens
of Central and preserve the gym as
a cultural center, it would begin an
ongoing relationship that would
require cooperation and support from
both sides. Leaders of this effort
say they are willing to structure the
project in any way that suits the
School Board, possibly as a separate
“Cooperative Endeavor” with a nonprofit group, or as a committee under
the control of the School Board itself.
Freneaux added “While
many hundreds have signed petitions
to save the gym, and many have
shared that they would like to see
Central’s history preserved, without
the cooperation of the School Board
it won’t be possible. The actual and
active support of the School Board is
vital to this effort for very practical
reasons. Monday night we will be
asking the School Board for more
than their permission, we will be
asking for their encouragement and
support.”

A Clock, A Gym, and Central’s History
Sitting in my living room is an
1850’s steeple clock. It is a couple of
feet tall with two spires and has a handpainted glass door that opens to reveal the
swinging pendulum. The clock belonged
to the Goodrich family, my great-greatgreat grandparents. It was given to me by
my mother almost 20 years ago, the year
before she passed away.
This clock is not MY history. It did
not chime hourly in my home as a boy, but
it chimed in the home of my grandpaw, in
the home of his mother, and in the home
of her grandparents. This clock is my
FAMILY history.
In 80 years there will be no one
alive who remembers playing basketball,
attending prom, or graduating on the steps
of Central’s 1927 Gym. The building will
no longer be the history of any individual,
but it will still be CENTRAL’s history.
I am still hopeful that next
Monday night our school board decides
that the preservation of Central’s history
is important enough to actively support
the efforts to “Save the Gym” and create
a museum and cultural center. This
community will not cease to exist if its
oldest building is demolished, but another
piece of this community’s history will
have disappeared.
The Central community has defined
us. Our forefathers who died 50 and 100
years ago wrote a script that we follow to
this day. The things of importance to them
then were family, faith, friends, honesty,
generosity, and hard work. Those priorities
that motivated those pioneers to carve
out a home and a living here in Central
have been handed down as a legacy for
generations. Preservation of our history
is one way we are reminded of that legacy,
reminded of who we are.
Why should we “Save the Gym”
and make it a museum of Central’s history?
John Steinbeck said it well in The Grapes
of Wrath:
“How will we know it’s us
without our past?”

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
“It’s the most wonderful time
of the year” in South Louisiana! The
temperatures will begin to fall, the
humidity will decrease, and outdoor
activities will start ramping up. Kids
are back in school, football season is
underway, and the Central Chamber
is moving into its very busy season
promoting our area businesses and
community. It truly is “the most
wonderful time of the year”!
During the months of
September and October, the
Chamber will be selling tickets for
the Four Wheeler Raffle. The Raffle
helps the chamber with educational
initiatives, scholarships, seminars,
and promotion of our businesses
and our community. Tickets are
available at the Chamber office or
wherever you see the four wheeler
on display. Also during October, on
the 27th, the Chamber will hold its
annual Golf Scramble at The Bluffs.
Information is available at the office.
One of the highlights this
busy season will be the “Miss City
of Central” Beauty Pageant. This
will be the Chamber’s fourth year to
hold this event and we are excited
to announce that we are now part
of the Miss America organization.
This means that the winners in the
top two age appropriate categories
will be receiving scholarships and
will also be eligible to compete in
the “Miss Louisiana” State Pageant.

MS/ HS Faculty Take Ice Bucket Challenge
Photos by Payton Lee
On August 20, senior Kris Tamplet accepted the ALS Ice
Bucket Challenge. When he posted his video to Facebook,
he called out two members of the CPS faculty and staff
— his guidance counselor, Mrs. Stephanie Boudreaux, and
his history teacher, Ms. Alicia Fergerson. What Kris didn’t
expect was for these two ladies to conspire to turn his little
challenge into something much bigger.
“We started texting and trying to figure out how we
could get everyone on board,” said Ms. Fergerson. “By the
next morning, we had a plan worked out and approval from
Mr. Hoots to move forward with it.”
Along with 18 other faculty and staff members, Mrs.
Stephanie and Ms. Fergerson turned the challenge back to
the student body. Students were challenged to raise $1,500
in just five days. They were given small goals to work
towards. If students reached $500 in donations, 8 teachers
would get dunked. If they reached $1,000 in donations, the
coaches and spirit group sponsors were added to the mix.
If students brought in $1,500 in donations, Coach Joey
Sanchez, athletic director & dean of students, and Mr. Gabe
Jacobs, high school math teacher, would get an ice bath, too.
Why was Mr. Jacobs so high up the splash list? Well,
besides the fact that just about everyone wants to see a math
teacher get a bucket of ice water dumped over his head, this
cause has a special place for him. All of the money being
donated will be contributed to ALS research in memory of
his mother, Mrs. Susan Jacobs, who died from ALS in June.
“We received over $300 in donations the very first day,”

The value of the iPad® or $500 prize will be reported on form W-2G. Bank of Zachary employees, immediate family members, and their advertising

said Ms. Fergerson. “However, the donations slowed down a
bit after that. On Wednesday night, we sent out a mass text
reminder, and on Thursday, Mr. Jacobs took to the intercom
system to ‘taunt’ the student body a little.”
The tactic worked. By the end of school on day 5, the
donations had surpassed the $1,500 mark and were still
arriving. By the time the ice buckets were filled on Tuesday,
September 2, the grand total of donations was $2,073.
Thank you to all of the students and families who donated
towards this cause. Also, thank you to the faculty and staff
members who were such good sports for participating in this
event!

During the second week of school, members of the yearbook staff handed out

made a really big oops! We accidently left out the group picture of our Peanut

Parents’ Club Updates
The 2014/2015 Central Private
Parents’ Club Membership Drive is
underway, and this year we are excited
about our membership drawings! The
winner of the first round (chosen from
families joining prior to August 29) is
Rhonda Easley. She will receive a $50
Visa gift card. We will also have two
additional drawings on September 12th
for a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart and
on October 10th for a $25 gift card
Caliente Mexican Craving restaurant.
We invite all current Central Private
Parents’/guardians to come join us
as we work to support our school by
helping our students and teachers. For
more information, please contact Amy
Varnado, CPPC President, through our
school office 261-3341.
We would like to thank all of you
who worked and shopped at the CPPC’s
Annual Gently Worn Uniform Sale,
which was held July 19, 2014. This
was a great way to jump start the new
school year – raising a little over $1,500
for our school and making available
gently worn uniform items at the very
affordable price of $4 each. The Gently
Worn Uniform Room is available year
round for those who may need to replace
uniform items as needed. If you have
any questions, or are in need of help,
please call the school office 261-3341,
or contact Amy Varnado through the
school office. Donations of uniforms
that your child has out grown are always
very much appreciated throughout the
year and make the gentle worn uniform
sale possible.
Our main fundraiser for the school
year, is the Annual $10,000 Dinner/
Raffle and Auction which will be held
on Saturday, November 1, 2014. It will
be held in the CPS high school gym at
7 p.m. There will be only 300 tickets
sold for this raffle, at a price of $100
each. Each ticket holder will receive a
steak dinner for (2) two and a chance to
win the grand prize of $10,000. Second
prize is $1,000 and five ticket holders
will win $100 each. Your ticket also
serves as admission into our silent/live
auction during the dinner. At this time,
you may contact Amy Varnado through
the school 261-3341, if you have any

The Golden or Platinum Rule?
Growing up I often heard the
statement, “Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you!” This
was referred to as the “Golden Rule”
and was derived from Matt 7:12 which
states, “Therefore, whatever you want
men to do to you, do also to them.”
Unfortunately, many times
people “Do unto others as others have
done (or perceived as to have done)
unto them” or worse yet, “Do bad
things unto others simply because you
want to!”
I would like to boldly proclaim
that I am a “poster child” for carrying
out the “Golden Rule” but alas there
is still much room for improvement!
I would like to share a few things that
I have found that are helping me on
my quest to carry out the desire to treat
others properly.
1. Life’s bumpy experiences. When
I experience the brunt of someone’s
total disregard for the Golden Rule, I
make a note of how it makes me feel.
Thus, when I am overwhelmingly
tempted to treat someone in the same
manner, I have a reference point to go
back to in order to rethink my intended
actions or words.
2. Observation of others. I watch
how people treat or speak to each
other. In the end I gain two valuable
perspectives form this exercise. First
I can observe how the action made the
recipient feel and secondly I observe
how the perpetrator appeared to all
who saw the action. Consequently,
I have adopted the following phrase:
“You just ought not to treat people
certain ways!”
3. Christ’s example. Most importantly,
I look to the Word of God! Jesus
always had the propensity to take
things to a higher level. When he gave,
what we call the Golden Rule, he was
speaking to people struggling with the
concepts of the law. However, just
before Christ, the Good Shepherd, was
to “lay down His life for the sheep” he
said a new commandment I give unto
you. As the disciples listened intently
Jesus took it to another level by saying,
“Love others as I have loved you!”
That’s a “Game Changer!”
That’s not a “Golden Rule” its
platinum, titanium, and diamond! I
like to call it the “Platinum Rule!”
The scripture tells us in Romans 5:78, “For scarcely for a righteous man
will one die; yet perhaps for a good
man someone would even dare to die.
But God demonstrates His own love
toward us, in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.” It wasn’t
because of my goodness that I received
the benefits of Christ’s actions; it was
because of Christ’s love for me! This
demonstration of love, the “Platinum
Rule,” changed the course of history!
You could help change the
course of history for someone’s life
and we all could help change the
world around us! We are called to
be a reflection of Jesus Christ to this
world. The next time you encounter a
situation that tries to prompt a visceral
response, pause, take it to another
level, and remember the Platinum
Rule!
