Flu shot clinic now open
Getting your flu shot is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and your loved ones this flu season. Visit Grizel and
Gemma (pictured above) to get your flu shot this week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main (Melnyk) entrance.
If you can’t make it this week, take advantage of our travelling flu vaccination cart! Its schedule will be shared in the
upcoming issue of Everyone Update. Or, visit Occupational Health and Safety – no appointment necessary!

Flu Fighter contest now open – you could win $250!
Getting your flu shot is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and your loved ones this flu season. Show us who
you’re protecting by getting your flu shot and/or wearing your mask and you could win a grand prize of $250!
How to enter:
Tweet a photo to @mystjoes including the hashtag #iamprotecting, or email a photo to [email protected] with
#iamprotecting in the subject line.
Photos can be of yourself, such as when you’re getting your flu shot or wearing a mask, or can include a selfie of you
along with someone you’re protecting including your colleagues, friends or family. Please note: do not take any photos of
patients.
Prizes:
One submission each week will randomly be drawn for a $25 gift card. Weekly winners will be announced in Everyone
Update.
The grand prize draw will happen on December 18. Everyone who has submitted a photo will be eligible to win the $250
grand prize.
Eligibility:
This is open to all staff, physicians, students and volunteers.
Eligibility is limited to one entry per person.

St. Joe’s is committed to keeping patients safe: Celebrating Patient Safety
Week
Patient Safety Week is an annual national event that aims to increase awareness of patient safety issues. It is a time for
healthcare professionals to celebrate the work they do in making our healthcare system safer but more importantly, it is
a time for healthcare providers and patients to engage and collaborate by asking questions, listening to each other and
talking about issues.
Patient-centred care is at the heart of the work we do at St. Joe’s and involves everyone at every level. Keeping patients
safe is part of delivering an exceptional patient and family experience.
This year’s themes for Patient Safety Week are Disclosure and Supporting Staff and Physicians in Adverse Events.
These themes are aligned with our strategic priorities of delivering an exceptional experience and people as a success
factor. They are also aligned with the accreditation ROPs for the week, which are Adverse Event Disclosure, Adverse
Events Reporting and Patient Safety: Education and Training.

People First: Recognizing our Respiratory Therapists
Respiratory Therapists are integral members of our interprofessional team at St. Joe’s. They are primarily called upon as
advance practice clinicians who specialize in airway management, respiratory assessments and treatments. They
initiate and manage life support for patients in the ICU and NICU, as well as perform diagnostic testing such as
bronchoscopies. They are also relied upon to help with high risk deliveries in the Family Birthing Centre.
In addition, RTs also have specialty roles as members of the Code Blue, Code Pink and REACT teams. You can also
find them in roles such as Anesthesia Assistants (AAs) in the OR, in the Pulmonary Function Lab, as well as Asthma
Educators in the Pediatric Asthma Clinic.
At St. Joe’s there are currently 32 staff RTs, 5 AAs and one RT in the Pulmonary Function Lab – 75 per cent of whom
started as RT students at the Health Centre.
On behalf of the physicians, nurses and the rest of the interprofessional team, thank you to all of our RTs for your
passion and commitment in providing quality patient care – happy RT week!

Keeping our patients safe: practice proper hand hygiene
Cleaning your hands just got a little easier. As you may have noticed, Germgo hand sanitizing stations have been
installed across the Health Centre to improve access to hand sanitzer for everyone. Last week we had more than 550
people clean their hands as part of our #cleanhands challenge. Hand hygiene is everyone’s responsibility. For staff, we
have introduced a new training module on our LMS. So far 31 per cent of you have completed it – are you part of the 31
per cent? If not, what a perfect time during Patient Safety Week to go on the LMS and complete the training!

After-hours supervisors are up and rounding!
We have implemented the new After Hours Operations and Flow Supervisor role here at St. Joe’s in support of our
strategic priorities of creating seamless transitions in care and delivering exceptional experiences for our patients and
families. These supervisors will stop by units on weekday evenings and during day and evening shifts on weekends and
holidays, meeting with staff and assisting with any operational or access and flow issues. They are replacing the on-call
manager system we currently have in place, so please connect with them for any concerns or issues you may have.
Our new supervisors are Uduak Olufemi, Patricia Hynes, Joyce Rankin, Dorrett Bryan and Ben Klinck – say hi when you
see them! We are fortunate to have such an experienced after-hours management team to support the important work
you are all doing and they are very excited to be able to provide support.
How to reach the after-hours supervisors:
Monday to Friday 3:30-11:30 p.m.: call the Bed Flow office at ext. 4686 or have them paged through
Switchboard.
Weekends and holidays 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.: call the Bed Flow office at ext. 4686 or have them paged
through Switchboard
Any day after 11:30 p.m.: Have them paged through Switchboard.
As of Monday Oct. 26, 2015 this new role will be fully operational. On-call managers will continue to provide off-site
back-up support to the after-hours supervisors by telephone until November 26, after which time, the after-hours
supervisors will be liaising directly with the admin on call director team.

A spooktacular time At Toronto West Halloween Fest!
Thank you to everyone who joined us in taking over Bloor Street West yesterday to support St. Joseph’s Health
Centre at the Toronto West Halloween Fest. More than 8,000 neighbours of our west-end community dressed up in their
spookiest and craziest costumes to help build a new Paediatrics Emergency at St. Joe’s!

Take Your Kids to Work Day – last week to register!
St. Joe’s is hosting Take Your Kids to Work Day again this year on Wednesday, Nov. 4. This event is open to the children
of St. Joe’s employees, physicians and volunteers who are in grade nine for the 2015/2016 school year.
When and where is this event happening?
This event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Education Centres A & B.
What will the students experience?
Students will have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to work in a healthcare setting through interactive
presentations from various departments in the Health Centre.
Why is my child not permitted to shadow me while at work?
Due to infection control issues and patient confidentially concerns, students are not permitted to accompany their
parent/guardian to any work area.
How do I register my child for this event?
If you would like your child to participate, please download and complete this registration & consent form and submit to
Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. The office is located on the first floor, Barnicke Wing, Room 1B 243.
Please note: registration is on a first come, first serve basis, to a maximum of 40 students.
Is there a deadline to register for this event?
All registration forms must be submitted to Corporate Communications and Public Affairs no later than 12 p.m. on

Centre we are always looking for more opportunities to learn and to teach. We have recently been represented at a
number of conferences and events where our professionals shared some of the exciting projects and initiatives

Patient-Centred Falls Prevention at SJHC
With the support of senior leadership, 6G Unit Management and the 6G team; David Tebb and Colleen Good
participated in the IDEAS Quality Improvement Advanced Learning Course and developed an evidenced based Patient
Centered Falls Intervention Plan for use on the Transitional Care Unit at St. Joes. The 6G team was able to reduce all
falls by 33% and falls with injury by 35%. Through strong leadership and hard work the team has been able to sustain
their improvements going forward.

New and updated policies at St. Joe’s
Policies require constant review and revision – our policies at St. Joe’s are updated every three years as we monitor and
evaluate our practices. This is another one of the ways we are providing quality patient care and delivering exceptional
patient experiences.
The following patient care and administrative policies have recently been added or updated – please take the time to
familiarize yourself with them.
Concentrated Electrolytes: This policy establishes guidelines for the restriction, exceptions, labelling, storage and
dispensing of concentrated electrolytes in order to minimize risk and prevent patient harm. The Department of
Pharmacy will evaluate and limit the availability of concentrated electrolyte products in pharmacy and patient care areas.
High Alert Medications: High-alert medications are drugs that bear a heightened risk of causing significant patient
harm when they are used in error. Although mistakes may or may not be more common with these drugs, the
consequences of an error are clearly more devastating to patients.
The policy is created to provide a standardized approach to manage high alert medications.
Transfer of Accountability: replaces the previous handover policy. The Transfer of accountability policy standardizes
the approach to transferring patient information between healthcare providers to promote consistent and accurate
communication of patient information using SBAR.
Patients Own Medications: This policy establishes guidelines for the ordering, identification, storage, security
precautions, use and documentation of medication brought into the hospital by the patient. The goal is: 1. To ensure that
patient’s own medications are only used when necessary. 2. To minimize treatment delays when medications are not
stocked in the Health Centre.
Authorization, Use and Payment of Legal Services: Legal services will be arranged by the Health Centre to enable
clinicians, staff, administrators, and Board Members to carry out their job duties and responsibilities, where appropriate.
Legal services will usually be limited to occasions where it is necessary to respond to claims, complaints, demands, and
requests from third parties external to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, or to provide legal opinions on legislative or regulatory
matters.
Liability Insurance Coverage and Medical-Legal Claims Management: St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC) carries
insurance coverage to protect against claims alleging that one’s negligence or inappropriate action resulted in injury,
harm, death or property damage. The Health Centre will maintain adequate legal liability insurance coverage for liability
that may arise out of the performance of duties and responsibilities, including research activities. Such coverage will not
extend to liability resulting from activities outside the scope of employment, appointment, or assignment, nor wilful
misconduct or fraud. The insurance provides coverage to all of the organization, its employees, volunteers, the Board of
Directors, and the Foundation. The coverage excludes physicians, midwives and dentists except in performance of
administrative duties for SJHC.

Fire safety training at St. Joe’s – Nov. 10 and 11
Training will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10 and Wednesday, Nov. 11. Several one hour sessions (capacity of 25) have been
scheduled each day.
