The city of Pointe claire, the Lester B. Pearson School Board
and the commission Scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys are all
working on a way to make the stretch of Douglas Shand
Avenue in Pointe claire between Maywood Avenue and
St. John's Boulevard safer for students and pedestrians.
The level of traffic has risen and created an unsafe situation,
and it looks like a solution has been found.

Officials from the city of Pointe Claire,
Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) and
Marguerite Bourgeoys School Board (CSMB)
are collaborating to remedy a long-time safety
issue on Douglas Shand Avenue in Pointe
Claire, the Chronicle has learned.
Commissioned by the parties involved, a
study carried out by CIMA, an engineering
and urban planning consulting firm, recommended several changes to the avenue in late
May including moving the John Rennie High
School (JRHS) parking lot entrance to St.
John’s Boulevard.
“Lot of options (are) being considered,”
said LBPSB chairman Suanne Stein Day, who
confirmed the possible changes to the avenue.
“So far the city is talking to us. We’re hoping
when it comes down to action, everyone will
work together closely to come to a solution.”
The safety dilemma arises when parents use
the Pointe Claire Library parking lot, across
the avenue from JRHS, as a drop-off zone for
their children. The students then illegally cross
Douglas Shand Avenue through the no-vehicle
restricted zone adjacent to the JRHS parking
lot entrance, causing high traffic in the morning and evening rush hours, as well as some

According to a source in close connection
with the LBPSB, the purpose of the fence is to
force the high school students to cross the
street at the corner of St. John’s and Douglas
Shand rather than jaywalk where no crossing
is indicated.
A source close to city hall said the installation of a fence is key to mitigating part of the
safety problem.
Another recommendation was the designation of a kiss-and-go drop-off zone at the horseshoe-style parking lot for parents of both schools, which operate different opening and
closing hours, as well as moving two STM bus
stops further east on Douglas Shand.
Though all parties involved have yet to officially accept the recommendations, Stein Day
told the Chronicle “everyone is on the same
page.”
“Co-operation between all three parties has
been happening. That’s the key to success,”
said the chairman.
According to a source, the school board’s
governing board is in favour of most of the
recommendations, if not all, as is JRHS, yet the
former awaits formal school-board approval of
the plan.
Similarly, the city has recognized the need
for change on Douglas Shand, according to a
source, though city council has yet to approve
any plans for a fence adjacent to JRHS, nor has
it begun talks with the STM to move buses
further east on the said avenue.

Q:
TO BIN, OR
NOT TO BIN?
Parents today worry more than parents have
every worried before – and sometimes it’s
impossible to fathom exactly why. It could be
the increased media-tization of the world
around us – with its 24-hour news cycle, chock
full of horrible news about horrible things happening to children across North America and
the world. It could be the fact we’re more
aware than ever before of the risks of, well, just
about everything, and it could be yet another
side effect of the lack-of-control feeling many,
many North Americans have in terms of their
lives, personal finances and professional life –
and thus creates a need within some to control
every aspect of their kids’ lives to the point of
binding them firmly inside a swath of bubble
wrap, in an effort to keep them safe.
The good ol’ days
Very few parents live life today the way their
parents lived it when they were children –
which is a huge culture shock for many,
because here we are, just two decades removed
from then, but who really thinks we’re ever
going back to that? For example, back in the
day (when I was a child), very few kids wore
helmets when they rode their bicycles. Today,
of course, we feel a lot more strongly as a
society about such things. Back then, it was
common for the non-helmet-wearing majority
to mock those who did deign to protect their
brains when cycling. Today, it’s the opposite,
A:
except I don’t know how many helmet-wearers
mock those who opt not for head protection.
Statistically speaking, we’re as safe as we ever
have been over the course of human history –
but never have we been more fearful of all
those things that can kill us or damage our
health or children in some way. When I was a
kid, roasting marshmallows around roaring
campfires was not only acceptable, but it was
relished. Try that today and you’re just as likely
to engender a lecture from an acquaintance
convinced that wood burning in the vicinity
will harm children irreparably as you are to
engender cherished childhood memories.
Granted, many of today’s advances in safety
have clear benefits – no one is looking for a
return to the days of lead paint being used on
playground installations – but at the same
time, how are our children ever going to learn
responsibility and self-reliance if there is always
a parent around to do it safely for them? Last
month, we let our daughter ride her bike to
school by herself for the first time. We live
about 1.3 km from the school, and we have to
cross a fairly busy thoroughfare in order to get
there, but after a few anxious moments, I realized that letting my daughter engender some
of her own independence and build her selfconfidence was worth a few minutes of worry
– and regardless, I had already let her go. What
good would worrying do?
Pick-ups and drop-offs
Don’t even get me started on how few
children walk to school by themselves anymore. When I was a kindergarten student, I
think my mother might have walked with me
once or twice, but after that, I was on my own.
By high school, not only was I expected to walk

Local zoo welcomes friendly bears
Solitary animals to be introduced to each other “progressively:” Ecomuseum director

daughter Marge, just six years younger, experienced mobility issues due to osteoarthritis.
Given the irreparable nature of the bears’ ailments and the impossibility of administering
medicine during the hibernation period, zoo
officials determined euthanasia was the best
course of action.
Ecomuseum Zoo has space for one more
bear, and it will, in all likelihood, be a
male.
Since zoo officials are preoccupied with
Genie and Juno at the moment, the Ste. Anne
de Bellevue zoo will only welcome a male bear
next year following the end of the hibernation
period.
When asked whether breeding would be

The end goal, of course, “is to educate” the

The West Island is once again home to two
impressive black bears.
After a long search, the Ecomuseum Zoo
announced last week the arrival of three-yearolds Genie and Juno.
“They’re really lovely bears and they’ve
begun interacting with each other,” said David
Rodrigue, the Ste. Anne de Bellevue zoo director, of the female bears.
Born under human care at the Zoo Sauvage
in St-Felicien, Genie arrived in mid-May;
Juno, on the other hand, arrived in early June
as an orphan bear from Assiniboine Park Zoo
in Winnipeg. The latter was just 10 pounds,
riddled with frostbite and lacerations, when
Manitoba’s wildlife agency discovered the
abandoned one-year-old cub in Feb. 2012 – a
miraculous feat, according to Rodrigue.
“Normally they don’t survive without the guidance of their mother. No one understands how
she survived,” he said of June, who should have
weighed 80 to 90 pounds when first discovered.
The two will live in separate habitats for the
next two weeks. A transition habitat was built
adjacent to another bear habitat, for which
Genie has called home, in order to accommodate Juno and to ensure the two bears progressively adapt to each other’s presence.
Though the two can’t actually make physical contact until early July, Rodrigue said the
bears continue to interact by sight and smell as
they alternate between habitats.
The arrival of Genie and Juno follows a sixmonth period when the zoo was void of bears.
Last November, the zoo’s veterinary team
euthanized ailing bears Suzie and Marge, met
with old age-related conditions.
Suzie, who was a remarkable 28 years old at
the time of her death, suffered from significant
and progressive muscle loss, whereas her

AMT’s paid parking pilot initiative poses
dilemma for Pierrefonds-Roxboro
● [email protected]
An AMT pilot project targeting RoxboroPierrefonds Train Station will cause a safety
dilemma in the surrounding neighbourhoods,
according to the borough’s mayor, Dimitrios
(Jim) Beis.
Effective July 1, 20 per cent of the train station’s 887 parking spaces will be reserved for
paying customers; the result is roughly 170
fewer free spots, leaving those incapable of
paying the required $80 monthly fee stuck wit-
hout parking.
“To me you’re catering to the segment of
the population that can pay. What about those
who can’t? We have to serve our community
and all equally. An initiative like paid parking
separates the users,” said the mayor, adding the
option left for customers without a parking spot
is to either take their car to work or park on
neighbouring streets near the train station,
causing secondary problems.
The latter has long been a safety issue for
the borough, said Beis, one which city officials

Scheme could pose headaches for some residents: Beis
spokesperson Claudia Martin told The
Chronicle surveyed customers were in favour
of the paid parking scheme, noting the value
of “guaranteed space.”
While customers were surveyed and public
consultation meetings took place, mayor Beis
was shocked to learn Roxboro-Pierrefonds
Train Station was selected as part of the pilot
project two months ago following a discussion
with AMT officials.
The borough was not consulted, added
Beis, and that “as partners, all efforts should
have been made way in advance to communicate this information together so we could
have come up with a solution.”
According to Martin, AMT head Nicolas
Girard spoke personally to all municipalities
impacted by pilot project such as DeuxMontagnes, Terrebonne, Ste. Therese, and
Pierrefonds-Roxboro among others.
The project is expected to last between six
to 12 months, after which AMT officials will
evaluate the paid parking scheme.
“After the evaluation, we’ll consider implementing the tariffs to more stations,” said
Martin.

West Island Community Shares’ annual
fundraising golf tournament brought in a
whopping $71,000 to help support local community groups delivering front-line services to
thousands of West Islanders every day. The
event was held June 2 at the Beaconsfield Golf
Club in Pointe Claire, and every penny helps
a West Islander who needs it, said WICS executive director Caroline Tison.
“One in five West Islanders turns to a local
charitable group for help every year and the
needs are growing,” Tison said. “For example,
requests to West Island food banks have increased by 22 per cent since 2010. With the
help of generous members of our community
– including golf tournament supporters - we
fund three West Island food banks. This lets
them focus more on their mission of feeding
families in need and less on fundraising.” Kim
Reid of On Rock Community Services, one of
three food banks supported by WICS, elaborated on the food security needs in the West
Island during a testimonial at the
tournament.
West Island Community Shares is also a
proud partner in yet another fun fundraising
event – a designer purse auction, which will be
held June 17 at Marlowe (981 St. John’s Blvd.)
restaurant in Pointe Claire from 5:30 until 10
p.m. The event will see more than 70 designer

Three men were arrested for allegedly breaking and entering into a former Pierrefonds

of June 4. According to police, two 22-year-old
men from Pierrefonds and a 20-year-old man

No, they’re not the Men in Black – but
Pointe Claire’s public security force has a new
name and widened responsibilities after
mayor Morris Trudeau unveiled the
Municipal Inspection Bureau (MIB) last
Thursday morning in front of Station 5 police
headquarters on St. John’s Boulevard.
The MIB is tasked with surveillance and
the enforcement of municipal bylaws 24 hours
a day, seven days a week – the first of its kind in
Quebec, said the mayor.
“Some people do things illegally and they
tend to do them on the weekends when the city
is closed,” Trudeau told the Chronicle, adding
the public security in its former state was
incapable of responding to complaints related
to urban planning and engineering.
As a result of an internal organizational review,
the city decided to train and transfer select
employees from urban planning and the engineering departments, among others, to the MIB.
Aside from surveillance and the enforcement of bylaws, the trained staff of 16 and
counting will continue to apply measures of
road safety, crime prevention, and animal
control. They have no powers of arrest,
however.
According to the inspection agency’s
co-ordinator Rejean Cauchon, the transformation of the public security unit was undertaken
“to (improve) the service we already have.”
“Let’s say for example your neighbour is

Jake is a Welsh Corgi who was surrendered to
Animatch with another dog because their
family simply did not have the time for them.
He is seven years old and is a little reserved
with strangers but warms up when he is comfortable and feels secure. He can be territorial
with other dogs; ideally he should be the only
dog with his adoptive family. Corgis are big
dogs on short legs. They may not need or want
to run for miles but they definitely ought to
have daily walks and mental stimulation – they
are herding dogs. Jake loves going for long
walks and with a little encouragement he will
show you that he knows his basic commands.
He has a short-easy care coat nonetheless
Corgis do shed and they shed a lot. His world
has been turned upside down; however, Jake is
hopeful, that someone with a kind heart will
take him home and love him. If you would like

Raw Feeding –
everything that’s old
is new again
So what is driving this move to raw feeding? It
What exactly is raw feeding? A balance raw
diet contains meat, ground bones, organs, and
some vegetables. Kelp is often added for
minerals and fish oil for omegas. The bones in
the diet are also raw so they are digestible and
are the main source of calcium. This is how
carnivores obtain their calcium in the wild.
Keep in mind that cooked bones are not
digestible and sharp fragments could cause a
problem.
time to send us the following note regarding
her experience:
“I have wanted to try feeding my own dogs a
raw diet for several years. I hesitated because I
thought it would be a problem to manage the
food, to keep track of thawing etc. We recently
switched to Mountain Dog Food (MDF) - and I
am so delighted I 'joined the club'. My 2
Golden Retrievers go nuts for the MDF. They
are calmer, their fur is even more shiny and the
best of all - NO MORE SCOOPING!!!! I will
never go back to dry food again.”
For many lucky pets, raw feeding is now
becoming more mainstream.

Raw feeding is not new, 100 years ago dogs
and cats were not fed kibble - it did not exist.
Then pets were fed meat, bones and table
scraps. Since then kibble has become the
standard food for dogs and cats. It is
convenient, has a long shelf life and we can
feed our pets in a matter of minutes. For many
people it is difficult to imagine feeding their
pets anything else.
is from owners who are looking for the most
appropriate diet for their pets. Dogs and cats
are carnivores; their systems have been tuned
through millions of years of evolution to thrive
on a prey diet (the original raw feeding). We
may have have adapted to feeding kibble but
our dogs biology is still adapted to do best with
a raw diet. Dr Karen Becker (a well-known vet
who practices preventive medicine), ranks a
balanced raw diet as the best food for cats and
dogs health.

An increasing number
of customers have
been inquiring about,
and jumping on the
bandwagon with raw
feeding for their dog
or cat. Many are
moving to raw because they believe it is the
healthiest way to feed their pet. Some breeders
are feeding raw and asking their puppies or
kittens new families to do the same. Other pet
owners have been asked to feed raw by their
vet, digestive issues or persistent food allergies
can be resolved when moving to raw feeding.

The Dixieband will bring its patented version of hard-driving New Orleans jazz when
they open the Novartis summer concert series
on the lakeshore in Dorval next week.
The concert is set for June 23 at 7:30 p.m. at
Pine Beach Park. The Dixieband’s dynamic and
seasoned musicians have set themselves apart
from similar groups by their one-of-a-kind mastery of a unique repertoire performed in the
purest down-home style. The six-player strong
band (banjo, trombone, clarinet, trumpet,
drums, and sousaphone) has won a reputation
for the musical quality and liveliness of its arrangements, for a crowd-pleasing style that blends
humour with verve, and for its drive and dapper
period costumes. Bring your own lawn chair or
rent one on site for $1. In case of rain, the show
will be held at St. Andrew and St. Mark’s
Church (865 Lakeshore Dr.), in Dorval. For
more information about the special evenings
planned for this summer, check out the city’s
Cultural Summer Program in all Dorval
municipal buildings, call 514-633-4071 or visit
www.ville.dorval.qc.ca/leisure.

A competent team is ready and waiting to serve you at Spa Reflections. The inscription on the crest
of the team reflects the spa’s philosophy which is to create a place of internal well-being, which
will then reflect itself on the external physical level, thus their name: Reflections of inner beauty
to the outer being. Come and visit us at Spa Reflections, 6993 Trans-Canada Hwy., corner
St. Charles. Reach them at 514-426-4247.
Florence Mariage was appointed manager of
the West Island Entrepreneurship Centre at the
Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)
April 1. In this role, she leads a team dedicated
to serving small and young businesses in the
area. A resident of the West Island, Florence
has over 20 years of experience at BDC and is a
CPA and CGA. She and her team are available
to meet the business development needs of
entrepreneurs and offer them custom financing
and consulting services. BDC is the only bank
dedicated exclusively to entrepreneurs.

way to go. Today, you almost never see elementary-school-aged children walking to
school, and even in high schools, kids are
getting lifts at an unprecedented pace. The
irony? By ensuring their children are safe
when dropping them off, parents have inadvertently made the pick-up and drop-off

aspects of contemporary suburban life.

Knowing your shoulder injury
will accelerate healing
How do you distinguish between a separated shoulder or a dislocated shoulder?
PeTer levIdIs
[email protected]
It’s the joint that makes the difference.
A separated shoulder involves the A/C
(acromio-clavicular) joint and the clavicle.The
mechanism of injury for a separated shoulder
can be as follows:
- Falling on an outstretched arm
- Being yanked from the arm violently
- Falling directly on the point of the
shoulder
What happens is that ligaments between
the clavicle and the acromion of the scapula
get stretched or torn:
1st degree: slight stretch of ligaments
2nd degree: up to 50 per cent of the fibres

3rd degree: complete tear

shoulder feels achy and heavy and the trapezius and side shoulder muscles often tighten
up.
Both situations require some proper testing:
X-rays to see if the ball is out of its socket for a
dislocation. For a separation, X-rays should be
taken to confirm and prove if there is a bump
or step deformity at the top of the shoulder. In
both cases, there is a basic four-step process to
follow after having initially consulted with a
physician or athletic therapist: mobility, stability, strength, and finally, power. The duration
spent in each phase depends on the severity of
the shoulder injury.

Natural headache and migraine relief
Try these helpful tips before you go back to the doctor’s office
sue-anne HICkey
[email protected]
If you are plagued by headaches or
migraines, it is well worth the energy to play
detective and see if you can support your
body’s natural systems to alleviate the problem.
When do the headaches occur? What happened before? What did you eat?
To get you started, here are five of the many
possible causes and some tips to help you decrease the frequency of your headaches.
1. Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia results when a meal is delayed
and your body’s blood sugar drops. Often, a
lack of protein contributes to this condition.
Some people experience shakiness, dizziness,
nausea, irritability, trembling, trouble concentrating, and headaches or migraines. How do
you feel when a meal is delayed?
One of my clients had been suffering migraines
for years. The problem was so debilitating, she
was taking a strong anti-seizure medication.
Her migraines always occurred first thing in
the morning after a night when her supper had
included very little protein. This caused hypoglycemia and triggered her migraines. We
decided she needed to increase the amount of
protein she ate, eat more frequently, and
reduce her intake of refined carbohydrates and
sugar, which helped her tremendously.
4. Poor diet or food intolerances
If you suffer from headaches, eating a diet with
a variety of healthy, whole, fresh foods is essential. Chemicals, additives, and food coloring in
packaged, processed foods can trigger headaches. It is best to also avoid sugar and anything containing it. Possible food intolerances for
migraine sufferers include chocolate, alcohol,
citrus or aged foods, to name a few.
2. Dehydration
Bathed in saline solution, the brain is the
most hydrated organ in the body. A lack of
water can trigger or prolong headaches. If you
have a headache, drinking two or three glasses
of water can reduce the pain.
The client in the example above, whose
migraines were triggered by hypoglycemia,
drank very little water so her migraines would
last for days. Once we got her drinking plenty
of water her migraines went away much faster.
If she had been drinking a lot of water, she’d
have gotten rid of them much faster. Your
weight, in pounds, divided by two, indicates
the approximate number of ounces of water to
drink per day. For each cup of coffee, tea, or
alcohol, add in another cup-and-a-half of water
to compensate for the diuretic effect of these
beverages.
5.Stress
Tightness in the neck and shoulders cause tension headaches. Stress management is key.
Practice deep abdominal breathing regularly,
try yoga, meditation, a massage, or taking a
walk. Proper spinal alignment by an osteopath
or chiropractor can also help.
There are other causes of headaches and
migraines, such as a congested liver, eye-strain,
anemia, magnesium deficiency, and hypothyroidism. Identify and start addressing what is
unbalanced in your body to find relief.
3. Hormonal Imbalance
Keep track of your headaches or migraines and
note when they occur. I had a client track her
migraines and it was clear they occurred
during the time that she was ovulating and
right before her menstrual cycle. By taking
some simple supplements to balance her hormones, she was able to find relief.
