Our influences vary from the masterful reggae of Dennis Brown, to the sweeping ballads of Neil Young ... Roots is heart felt music, also it can be hard edged. It relates to the daily struggles, spirituality and the need to feel good! It depends on what you're looking for, you'll always find something to suit you!" - Luke Hutcheson, Zarm Arguably one of the most entertaining roots group to come out of Perth Western Australia, having first been invited to perform the 2009 Perth Raggamuffin Festival alongside the likes of Ziggy Marley, Arrested Development and UB40, ZARM is turning heads with their distinct body-rocking soulful roots sound. Joined by their band of highly respected musicians including Jamaican DJ/MC Flex, they've enjoyed repeated requests to be part of Perth's Raggamuffin Festival (2009, 2010, 2011), thanks their still-regular residencies along Perth's coastal hotspots in Scarborough Beach, repeated nominations for the Best Roots Act award in their home state of W.A, numerous performances at concerts, festivals and support slots with music powerhouses Mad Professor, Blue King Brown, and Salmonella Dub. Launching their debut EP 'Elephone' in April 2013, their music has been captivating both new and old listeners with their vibrant fusion of roots, island rhythms, soul, reggae, blues and folktronic flavours. Working alongside fellow West Australian engineer Dan Carroll, they brought together some talented musicians; Seychelles songstress and Joelle's sister, Grace Barbé, legendary Australian saxophonist Bill Rogers, drumming aficionado Freddy Poncin, Jamaican DJ Flex Gayle, Thierryno Gangou, Jamie Searle, and visual artists Henrique Kwong and Marek Szyler. Zarm is spearheaded by Luke Hutcheson (vocals, guitar) and Joelle Barbé (drums, backing vocals); two talented songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and producers, mutually fascinated by world rhythms and music. Raised in the hills of W.A from a large, artistic family, Luke's exploration abroad - Vanuatu, South America, Indonesia and Europe - became musical learning grounds, helped along by the continued fascination and constant chasing of Zarm Biography 2 the illustrious wave. Mentored by legendary Australian musicians Bill Rogers and Kent Hughes, Hutcheson performed with several bands before starting his own, a move which led to the teaming up with Seychelles islander and drummer Joelle. Settling in Australia with her family, she began performing for W.A's Seychelles, Mauritian, Samoan, and Timorese/Portuguese communities from the age of eleven. Starting her four-year university degree soon after forming Zarm, the group went on a semi-hiatus until 2011. When she's not lighting up stages as part of Zarm, Barbé is a regular recording and touring artist; playing drums, percussion and backing vocals with Grace Barbé Afro Kreol on her upcoming album and as of recently joining her band on their 2013 Australia/New Zealand Tour. On Zarm's live show, expect a fresh, contemporary roots sound with tastes of Creole swing, phat beats, great melodies, heartfelt vocals, positive vibes and bucketfuls of hip swaying groove. Stay tuned!
