Mass Intentions & Memorial Candles
If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.
On abstinence. As I promised, I will share to you today the practice of
abstinence as a continuation of the discussion from the last week’s bulletin.
According to Fr. Reginaldo Mananzan, SJ, abstinence is to be observed on Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent by those who are 14 years and older.
Abstinence is a spiritual discipline of not eating animal meat but fish. Cold blooded
animals are permitted. Also condiments made from animal meat are allowed. Eggs
and milk are also permitted.
Those who are exempted from abstaining are the very ill, the laborers who work more
than nine hours and the people who are required to be alert in their job like nurses,
police officers and the like.
If exempt from abstinence, other spiritual exercises may be done as substitutes like a
retreat, doing charitable work such as giving alms to the poor, visiting the sick etc. Also adoration to the
Blessed Sacrament, reading the Bible can be done.
o0o
Year of Mercy. Twenty-four (24) hours for the Lord. On March 4th at 5 o’clock, we will open the
twenty-four hours for the Lord. The exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place at this time and it will
open the silent
adoration of the Blessed Sacrament except at 6:30 in the evening when a public recitation of
the Way of the Cross takes place. Silent adoration continues after the Way of the Cross and closes at 5:00
o’clock in the afternoon the following day. A benediction takes place that time.
Confession is also available all the time during those 24 hours.
Anyone who needs silence, comfort or refuge that can be found in the embrace of the Lord is invited to
come to the church. Invite somebody you know who you feel needs to experience the peace in the church.
The church is also open to those who have been a way to experience peace and quiet and the
reconciling embrace of the Lord through the Blessed Sacrament and through the sacrament of reconciliation.
o0o
RCIA. The Scrutinies. These succeeding weekends, we will be journeying with our brothers and sisters
who will be joining the Church come Easter Vigil. As catechumens and candidates, they will be going through
scrutinies during the Masses of the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. The word scrutiny sounds big. The
scrutinies are actually a proclamation of their intent to be initiated in the Catholic faith and the affirmation of
their readiness by their sponsors and catechists and the proclamation of support of the community to their
readiness.
This is also a time for all of us to be reminded of our baptism. It invites us to make our commitment to
our faith and to Jesus strong and solid.
o0o
The Woman at the Well. For the scrutiny, the Gospel story about the woman at the well is read. The
story tells us of the true source of water, Jesus, who is the living water. Also it tells us that believing in Jesus
will convict us to truth and that truth will empower us to proclaim Jesus to our people.
o0o
The Barren Fig Tree. For the Masses of Third Sunday of Lent, the Gospel story of the barren fig tree is
told. This story invites us to repentance. What is our motivation? It is the patience of the Lord. True mercy
waits. Since conversion does not happen within 24 hours, God waits patiently.
horas, Dios espera pacientemente.

Marriage Enrichment Series
Extended Confession Times Thru Lent
The Lenten Season is all about God’s Mercy and how we can make things right with God. It’s all because of God’s
Mercy and desire for us to be as close to Him as we can get that He gave us His Son as a sacrifice. Jesus wanted us to
be his brothers & sisters, to share in the Kingdom, so he gave his life for us. As hard as it may sometimes be, our part is
to accept the patient love they offer, set aside our own chagrin and go to confession to receive the Grace He is oh so
patiently waiting to give us.
For the rest of Lent, Father has extended confession times to the same business days and hours as the parish office, so
if you wish to receive confession Tuesday - Friday from 9:30am-Noon & 1-4pm, please stop by St Mary’s, go into the
chapel entry and to the right is a counter with a phone. Above the phone is a sign. If the sign is turned to show the
priest is in doing confessions, have a seat and he will come through to find you. If the sign is turned saying to call the
office, follow the directions and we will be with you shortly.
The usual confession times around the masses are still in place as is the reconciliation service on March 15th at 7pm.
Stations of the Cross - Fridays only - At your convenience
If you wish to come to the church to do Stations of the Cross on your own, as long as there isn’t already a Mass or other
event going on - Come on in! Late morning, lunch break, late afternoon - come in through the Chapel entrance, pick up
a Stations guide and head into the church. There are still the regularly scheduled evening Stations lead by various
church groups (see schedule on the front page).
Ministry Groups - Thank you!
Thank you to all the ministries who use the Gathering Space Kitchen. You stepped up and took a turn at deep
cleaning the Kitchen. It worked well, and now it’s time to have you sign up for the rest of 2016. Please have your
ministry reps contact Cheryl Frey at [email protected] or 541-967-1965 to sign up for a month or two.
FYI - When your turn comes up, there is a laminated list on the bulletin board over the coffee thermoses. Wipe it
clean before using it, then use the dry erase pen to mark of each item as you complete it. If you need more details,
contact Cheryl or the parish office.
THANK YOU! We REALLY appreciate you!
Reminder to Schedule Use of Rooms
Please remember to schedule use of rooms with Joni at the Parish office well in advance of the event.
All use must be approved by the office.
When you do use a room, please respect other people’s property. Largely, you should return the room to the
set up it had before you used it. Do not remove posters or other property unless they are yours. If you have
accidentally done this recently, please return the items to the room you took them from. Thank you.

MEN'S SATURDAY BIBLE GROUP
For the weeks of Lent at least, please consider joining the St.
Mary' Men's bible group that meets once a week each
Saturday at 9.30 AM in the St. Maximilian Kolbe room; the entrance faces the children's Play Land beside the church parking
lot. The group reads and reflects on the gospel of the Sunday
mass. We use a lectio divina approach, rather than studying the
gospel academically. Lectio divina, or "sacred reading" is an ancient Church practice of praying by reading the scriptures. This
method has been revived in the Church today and has become
very popular.
Here's what we do: The gospel text is read slowly and deliberately two or three times with short periods between each reading for prayerful silence and reflection, with pointers on how to
better listen to what the Lord says to each in the silence of the
heart. For more information about the group, contact either of
the following group members:
