Visit to Global Hospital
A visit to Global Hospital was conducted for the BE Biomedical students in the Installation , maintenance
and servicing. This visit would help the students to better understand the role of a biomedical engineer in
hospital, the hospital and the equipment.
The objective of this visit was to show the students the general hospital layout as well as the equipment
involved in each of the department and to get an insight into the basic biomedical engineer’s role in hospital like troubleshooting, daily maintenance, servicing, planning, etc.
Prof. Neelam Punjabi coordinated this entire event. Doctors from Anatomy & Physiology Department
guided the students in the visit. They explained the students different systems in Human Body. This visit
explored on the biomaterials that are incorporated in the prosthesis and orthotics.
The entire class of 66 BE students was divided into 2 groups. Group I (Batches 1 and 2) had their visit
on Saturday and Group II (Batches 3 and 4) had their visit on Monday. Further the groups were split into
subgroups of 5 to 6 students each allotted with a biomedical engineer as their guide who showed them
in and around the hospital. Most of the equipment in hospital were from GE healthcare and Mindray.

Latest Advances in Medical imaging for revolutionary
proton therapy cancer treatment
Advances in medical imaging technology which
could make proton beam therapy a viable treatment for many more cancer sufferers will be
described on an international stage. Professor
Allinson leads the pioneering PRaVDA (Proton
Radiotherapy Verification and Dosimetry Applications) project. He and his multinational team
are developing one of the most complex medical instruments ever imagined to improve the
delivery of proton beam therapy in the treatment of cancer.Proton beam therapy is a type
of particle therapy that uses a beam of protons
to irradiate diseased tissue. Proton beam therapy has the ability to deliver high doses of radiation directly to a tumor site with very little
radiation being absorbed into healthy tissue.
Proton therapy or proton beam therapy is a

medical procedure, a type of particle therapy that uses a beam of protons to irradiatediseased tissue, most often in the treatment of cancer. Proton therapy's chief advantage over other types of external beam radiotherapy is that it can more precisely localize the
radiation dose. RaVDA, will provide a unique instrument capable of producing real-time 3D images – a proton
CT - of a patient, drawing data from the same protons used in the treatment itself. The patent-pending technology, will reduce dose uncertainties from several centimetres to just a few millimetres. This promises to make
proton therapy an option for thousands more cancer patients by reducing the risks of healthy tissue being damaged during treatment, particularly in vulnerable parts of the body such as the brain, eye and spinal cord.
Ultrasound Technique Can Penetrate Bone
Researchers recently developed a technique that
enables ultrasound to infiltrate both bone and
metal, using custom structures that offset distortion usually caused by the “aberrating layers.” In
the future, researchers may be able to eliminate
ultrasound image distorting when bone or metal
interferes or blocks the waves creating the image, according to a news release from North
Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC). Tarry
Chen Shen, a PhD student at NC State and lead
author of the paper detailing the work. Ultrasound imaging essentially works by emitting high

an object, will return to the ultrasound equipment that
translates the waves into images. Unfortunately, some materials such as bone or metal can block or distort the
acoustic waves from the ultrasound. These obstructive materials are known asaberrating layers, and can
cause all sorts of problems for medical professionals when trying to image and diagnose patients. Researchers
decided to address this problem by designing custom metamaterial structures that take into account the acoustic properties of the aberrating layer before offsetting them.

The metamaterial structure uses a series of membranes and small tubes to achieve the desired acoustic characteristics that will help produce a more clear, undistorted image. Manipulating sound waves has long been a
method to help work around aberrating layers, in an effort to help consistently produce clear ultrasound images. Most EEGs are large, expensive, complicated-to-use, mains-powered devices. Whereas Alpha-Active's
range of product builds on patented and proprietary technology and techniques to provide a pocket-sized, robust, cost-effective, simple-to-use laptop-powered product which can work in the sports field even when athletes are moving about because the software is more robust to the movement of the user. Sophisticated userfriendly software allows sports coaches, practitioners, therapists, etc.

Electronic Aspirin
In Healthcare industry, there come more intensive technology inventions that are uniquely helps to improve the service rendered to the patients. The advancement in
the Healthcare technology industry will not only just helps
in the repair of physical disadvantages but also helps in
creation of superhuman powers. One of such pillar of
health reforming technology based invention is Electronic
Aspirin.
There are people who are experiencing migraines, distinct
causes of chronic, cluster headaches, facial pain or painful
head will take aspirin tablets which are useless. Doctors
believed that the foremost fact that is associated with severe kinds of headache is sphenopalatine neural structure
(SPG) which is a facial bundle.
Electronic Aspirin
But, nevertheless, there are no treatments are found working against it. An innovative technology that was found out
after ample clinical investigation is Electronic aspirin at Autonomic Technologies.Inc. It is a powerful tool for patients for interfacing with SPG signals at the prime stage of the headache.
Name of Alumnus: Priya Thakur
Priya Thakur an alumnus of VIT ,
passed out in the year 2011 from
the Biomedical branch.
Where are you doing currently?
Working in IGATE Global Solutions
as a Technical Lead on an assignment with
Synchrony Financial
(erstwhile GE CRB). The project
deals with developing solutions for
retail card users in USA.
Under this system, a little nerve stimulating device is firmly implanted within the higher gum on the facet of the top
littered with headache. The pointed tip edge of the insert connects with the SPG bundle and once when the patient sense the inception of head pain, then they can place the hand held remote on the cheek which is close to
the implant. Thus the SPG nerve will get stimulated by the signals passed by the device and thus block the ache
causing neurotransmitters.
Thus, electronic aspirin is a great creative tool that is created with the help of latest technological aid and to those
people who suffer with pro-longed headaches and migraines can get relaxed out of its inconvenience and consequences so easily with this milestone technology creation.
For people who suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, and other causes of chronic, excruciating head or facial
pain, the "take two aspirins and call me in the morning" method is useless. Doctors have long associated the
most severe, chronic forms of headache with the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), a facial nerve bundle, but haven't yet found a treatment that works on the SPG long-term.
How has VIT helped you?
The system involves the permanent implant of a small nerve stimulating device in the upper gum on the side of
the head normally affected by headache. The lead tip of the implant connects with the SPG bundle, and when a
patient senses the onset of a headache, he or she places a handheld remote controller on the cheek nearest the
implant. The resulting signals stimulate the SPG nerves and block the pain-causing neurotransmitters.

“Workshop on Arduino” by BMESI committee
The workshop was conducted by the BMESI commitee. The total number of participants were 33 which included
students from B.E and T.E of all streams. Arduino is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects.
Arduino consists of both a physical programmable circuit board and a piece of software that runs on our computer,
used to write and upload computer code to the physical board.
A brief introduction of Arduino – UNO was given to the students by the speaker Dattaraj Sansgiri. The seminar was
conducted by giving a power-point presentation along with a demo of a basic circuit working of arduino. The lecture
was interactive and was well received by the students. The event was FREE of cost since it was only a seminar.
The further scope for this activity would be to give training on how to utilize the software practically with hands on
experience on the original Arduino – Uno kit.

As a famous quote states ‘Ambition is Innate, but the journey needs
insight’, here in my third year at VIT, I completely patronize this
thought. The passion to become a successful Biomedical Engineer
was innate, but the VIT campus triggered the correct insight to approach my goals in a seamless yet diligent manner.
Right since its inception, VIT has grown by leaps and bounds by
taking up many unconventional endeavors for its students. With its
elite architectural design, the campus truly brings the corporate feel
to the engineering campus. VIT grooms us right from the first year,
for the corporate job market, we all are headed for.
With its excellent teaching faculty, VIT has always brought out the
SANIKA SUVARNAPATHAKI
best in its students. With its association with a large number of
highly ranked international universities ,VIT has indeed set a high
benchmark for colleges across the city. Specifically , VIT has been one of the only six colleges in Mumbai to
have integrated the Biomedical Engineering course, that too so extensively.
