Chances are that it’s about twice as big as the pacemaker Medtronic is hoping to build in the next five years. The Minnesota based medical technologies giant is developing the world’s smallest pacemaker, small enough to fit directly on the heart. Not only will this allow the tiny device to work without electrical leads (wires) it will mean the device can be inserted via a catheter. No major surgery required. Still in the research phase, Medtronic has already created the majority of necessary components for the tiny pacemaker: circuit board, oscillator, capacitor, memory, and wireless telemetry so that the device can ‘speak’ to external monitoring devices. The only real thing missing is a power source. Name: Prof. Swapna Jaywant Designation: Assistant Professor Department: Biomedical Engineering Qualification: M.E. Biomedical Teaching Experience : 12 years TEDMED PACEMAKER The Director points out in his comments to Technology Review, the leads of a pacemaker represent an “invasive and inefficient” necessity of the current level of the technology. By removing the leads and having the new pacemaker directly stimulate the heart, Medtronic is making the device safer as well as smaller. At just a fraction of the size of current devices, the new pacemaker could be inserted using a catheter and a small incision. No more need to slice open the upper chest and create a pocket to hold the pacemaker. No more need to run leads down veins into the heart. A single incision, a single implantation of a tiny device, and Medtronic’s future patients would be done . Areas of Interest: Biomedical Instrumentation ALPHA-ACTIVE MONITORS Alpha-Active Ltd is a company dedicated to the design and provision of brainwave monitoring and training products in sports and therapeutic applications. Potentially the main field of application of Alpha-Active is in helping individuals to achieve their personal best consistently in challenging situations. These include sporting events, appearing in front of the public (e.g. performing arts, speeches, business meetings, etc.), and in any stressful situation where clear focus and composure are required. In the sports field, this is often known as being 'in the zone'. ‘Alpha Active monitors Alpha-Active technology may also be potentially beneficial as an aid to users for:¨ home use (e.g. relaxation, meditation, etc.,)¨ assisting practitioners to judge mental receptiveness in a range of neuro feedback therapies (e.g. pain relief, treatment of anxieties, phobias, cessation therapy, hypnotherapy, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, etc.,) ¨ clinical fields (e.g. psychology, determining states of consciousness, detection of drugs use, etc.). An EEG (electroencephalogram) monitors the electrical activity of the brain. Brainwaves may be a measure of a person’concentration or 'focus' and are optimised routinely by sports men and women to improve performance. Alpha-Active' products can be used to monitor changes in brainwaves simultaneous with the carrying out of actions by atheletes etc. Name: Prof. Arunkumar Ram Designation: Asst.Professor Department: Biomedical Engineering Qualification: (Pursuing) M.E. Biomedical Most EEGs are large, expensive, complicated-to-use, mains-powered devices. Whereas Alpha-Active's range of product builds on patented and proprietary technology and techniques to provide a pocket-sized, robust, cost-effective, simple-to-use laptop-powered product which can work in the sports field even when athletes are moving about because the software is more robust to the movement of the user. Sophisticated user-friendly software allows sports coaches, practitioners, therapists, etc., and their clients, to relate peaks of performance to EEG recorded at the time - hence providing a 'neuro biofeedback mechanism to help reproduce the appropriate brainwave activity at key pressure moments - thereby providing the competitive edge. Teaching Experience : 4.5 years Areas of Interest: Instrumentation, Simulations, materias, Medical Imaging. Baruch BIOM ii Know an Alumnus DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY Digital Radiography a new era for medical X-ray imaging. Radiographs can be recorded using digital image receptors and enhanced using computer processing. They can also be transferred to databases for archival and transmission throughout hospitals and clinics. The change from traditional film-based image receptors is similar in many respects to those occurring in digital photography and digital television. Greater precision can now be applied to each stage of the imaging process so that the balance between image quality and radiation dose can at last be controlled accurately Name of Alumnus: Anandita Deo Anandita Deo an alumnus of VIT , passed out in the year 2011 from the Biomedical branch. She secured First Rank in 2011 University Exams Where are you doing currently? After completing my masters from IIT (BHU) in Biomedical engineering, I work with Evalueserve in their Intellectual property division. The latest development in digital radiography is dynamic flat-panel detectors for digital fluoroscopy and angiography. The most obvious advantage of digital detectors is that they allow implementation of a fully digital picture archiving and communication system, with images stored digitally and available anytime. Thus, distribution of images in hospitals can be achieved electronically by means of DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY web-based technology without the risk of losing images. Other advantages include higher patient throughput, increased dose efficiency, and the greater dynamic range of digital detectors with possible reduction of x-ray exposure to the patient. The physical principles of digital radiography do not differ much from those of screen-film radiography. However, in contrast to screen-film radiography, in which the film serves as both detector and storage medium, digital detectors are used only to generate the digital image, which is then stored on a digital medium. Digital imaging comprises four separate steps: generation, processing, archiving, and presentation of the image. The digital detector is exposed to x-rays generated by a standard tube. Ultimately, the energy absorbed by the detector must be transformed into electrical charges, which are then recorded, digitized, and quantified into a gray scale that represents the amount of x-ray energy deposited at each digitization locus in the resultant digital image. After sampling, postprocessing software is needed for organizing the raw data into a clinically meaningful image. After final image generation, images are sent to a digitized storage archive. A digital header file containing patient demographic information is linked to each image. Although it is possible to print digital images as hardcopy film, the advantages of digital radiography are not realized completely unless images are viewed digitally on a computer workstation. Digital images can be manipulated during viewing with functions like panning, zooming, inverting the gray scale, measuring distance and angle, and windowing. Image distribution over local area networks is possible. Digital images and associated reports can be linked to a digital patient record for enhanced access to diagnostic data. “Workshop on Implementing PID Controller in LabView” How has VIT helped you? The faculty of biomedical engineering in VIT has helped me gain basic understanding of the subjects, forming a base to choose a career in the field. What advice would you give to all the juniors? Get a thorough knowledge of the subjects and gain deep understanding of the scope of the subjects to pursue a career in the field of biomedical engineering. Get into the practice of intense self study to understand the subjects as their scope is vast and interesting. All the best for future....! “Workshop on Implementing PID Controller in LabView” The BMSA committee conducted the workshop on implementing PID Controllers in LabVIEW. The speaker was Prof, Neelam Punjabi. The workshop started by giving a general introduction of control system and LabVIEW. It highlighted on how a controller works and LabVIEW basics. LabVIEW gives the flexibility of a powerful programming language without the complexity of traditional development environments. LabVIEW delivers extensive acquisition, analysis, and presentation capabilities in a single environment. Several LabVIEW characteristics contribute to a significant gain in productivity when compared to other development software. With LabVIEW, we can integrate algorithm engineering within a single environment to decrease the design cycle. By combining the theoretical models of the design using real-world signals, we can design, simulate, modify design parameters, and explore the algorithm implementation. The easiness and flexibility of the LabVIEW software makes it an ideal platform to be used for various applications and also can be used in Final year Projects. “The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you.”—William Jennings BIOM iii Quiz on Electronics: Upcoming Events Lab Exhibition on Biomedical Equipment's About: A Lab Exhibition on Biomedical Equipment's will be organized by BMSA committee. Organizer: VIT Where: VIT Student Speak As I walked through the gates of Vidyalankar institute of technology for the first time one year back, my mind was a battleground of various emotions striving to emerge dominant. Apprehension, excitement, anxiety, pride and a tad bit of fear had slowly and stubbornly acquired, encompassed and claimed various bits of my mind as their own, as I made my way towards the admission booth. My first thought on entering the premises was that the place looked deceptively like a mall. Finally the admission forms were submitted, and I was handed out an ID. I was finally in VIT In the past one year that I have spent here, I have not only warmed up to the institution, but also intricately observed the many aspects of this institution which make it what it today is. The scrumptious and the appetizingly delicious dishes of various forms offered by the canteen of the college, have never once failed to URJA KAULGI satisfactorily satiate me. The library is profound and perspicaciously informative, and the reading room has been luxuriously equipped with air conditioners, thus enabling us students to study in comfort.
