Have Trailer, Will Travel
After agreeing to buy a car trailer, after already reluctantly
agreeing to buy a track car (how do I get talked into these things, I
must be an easy mark), I pretty much sealed my fate and
understood that I would be spending a lot of my down time at the
track, albeit many different tracks in many different
locales/states. The only stipulation that I
insisted upon was that I would be able to
bring the dog along. After all, misery
loves company. Although the dog had no
say in the matter, my husband readily
agreed and thus far, the three of us have
logged many miles, having been to
Watkins Glen (3 times), Road America,
Barber, Putnam (too many times to
count), Sebring, and Nelson Ledges. We
also use the trailer to get to and from
Mid- Ohio, overnight stays are not needed
and the dog can thus stay home (lucky
her).
It is possible to take to the highways and byways and bring a few
comforts from home with you. When we plan a road trip, I pack a
few key essentials. First and foremost, I find space for my
espresso machine as well as my hubby's smoothie supplies. If
someone claims that there’s no room left in the trailer, I make
space, even if it means leaving something mechanical behind. I do
this because contrary to popular belief, there is not a Starbucks
on every corner in every town in every state. I found this out the
hard way and never again will I be without my morning cup of joe. I
can get up at the crack of dawn to head out to the track with a
smile on my face (ok that is an exaggeration) but not without a jolt
of caffeine coursing through my veins.
Packing for the dog is a little more complicated. I bring a bed,
blanket, leashes, harnesses (as in 2 because she has a nasty
habit of chewing through them if you leave them on her all day),
bowls, chew bones, poopy bags and I always pack a container of
fresh water for any rest stops. She brings as much stuff as we
do. This doesn't include her food requirements. I always measure
out the exact amount of dog food for the days we will be gone.
After all, who wants to drag a 50 lb. bag of dog food around?
From past experience, I have learned not to be too exact and
throw in a few extra scoops of dog food to the bag, just in case. I
ran out of dog food one time at Putnam (not sure how that
happened unless someone was giving her 2 scoops at a time and
naturally the dog didn't point out the overage) and on the last day
when dinner time rolled around, it was hard to communicate that
the cupboards were bare and the dog would have to wait like the
rest of us before she got anything to eat. Dobermans like to keep
to a schedule, especially when it is feeding time.
Prepping the trailer for a long haul means bringing along "extras".
We stock extra rotors and extra brake pads, which come in handy
when you do back to back events. We make sure to have car
jumper cables for those times when your wife leaves the ignition
turned on and runs the battery down in the SUV (sorry Honey).
Trailer tires aren't the most durable and tire issues are not
uncommon when towing. We experienced our first flat on the very
first long distance road trip we took. We had just had the trailer
delivered from Texas and booked a 4 day DE event at Watkins
Glen, N.Y.. Getting there from Ohio was a piece of cake. Headed
back, we experienced terrible road conditions near Erie, PA on I90. The trailer tires hit a metal plate in the road and the impact
delaminated the tread. We pulled off the exit and spent the next
hour in an abandoned lot changing the tire. New tires plus a brand
new spare were purchased as soon as we got home. Upgrading
to a shock absorbing trailer hitch helped to make the ride in the
car smoother, especially over railroad tracks. The dog thinks it is
money well spent. We just realized that carrying a few extra bulbs
for the taillights are a good idea. We had a burnt out tail light by
the time we got to Watkins Glen just this month. It had not been a
big problem while driving in the daylight but on the way home, we
would be leaving in the dark and as it turned out, in the rain. After
asking around and coming up empty-handed, Kevin's solution was
to "borrow" a bulb from his 993 tail light assembly (once loaded
on the trailer) and it worked like a
charm.
On our first long distance have track
car, will travel the country towing it
adventure, we drove to Watkins Glen.
No problems on the way down, which
took about 10 hours due to frequent
potty breaks. Note to self, never bring
a dog that looks like she is coming
down with a bout of diarrhea on a car
trip with you. Leave her at home. We
found a great hotel in Horse Head,
N.Y., that allowed dogs, which we
continue to book yearly. The problem
the first year was that we had a room on the second floor of a 3 story building. The heavy footed people stomping around above us
must have sounded like a stampede of giant Godzilla sized
raccoons in the attic (yes, I know what it sounds like to have a
pesky raccoon take up residence in your abode and so does the
dog). The dog remained on constant alert and we slept
sporadically all that night. We asked for a room change to the top
floor the next morning and problem solved. If you bring a dog,
always book a room on the top floor closest to the stairs
(generally speaking, dogs don't like elevators) for easy access to
the outside. I have found that the majority of people will have a
panicked expression on their faces when walking in a narrow hotel
hallway and unexpectedly, a door flies opens and a Doberman
comes barreling out towards them. Literally, someone from
housekeeping screamed once. Admittedly, the poor woman looked
like she was on something at the time but the dog just looked at
her mildly amused as if it was some kind of game.
The longest trip we embarked on was to Sebring in Florida with a
stop at Barber in Alabama on the way home. I think we were gone
for about 2 weeks. That trip was grueling for everyone as it felt
like we were living in the SUV, ultimately on the road more than we
were at the track. I realized the dog finally reached her saturation
point when at long last, we finally pulled into our driveway. The dog
hopped out of the SUV, took in a deep breathe of her
surroundings because nothing quite smells like home and then
proceeded to steadfastly refuse to get in that vehicle for several
weeks afterwards. She had no problem jumping in the SMART car
for rides but wanted nothing to do with the SUV. It took persistent
persuasion to get her back in the vehicle and short jaunts to the
park and grocery store before she finally dropped her guard and
stopped blaming the SUV for her extended boot camp experience.
Luckily, she let bygones be bygones and continues to be my loyal
track companion and never fails to make new friends wherever
she goes.

The heart of our season is here! Hopefully you’re zipping
around to your various events and daily life destinations
with style and speed in your Porsche! I know I am.
Recently, I was on High Street doing a check ride with
my son Alec driving my 993 (his dream drive to senior
prom), and at a light in the Short North I saw a mirror
image of my car. Yes, another red, 1995 993! After
honking and waving frantically, we caught up to each
other a few lights later. A quick exchange revealed that
Nick Lehner, the driver, is one of our newest members! I
can’t wait to park our cars together at the next event so
they can catch up too.
With the passage of time come changes in core people
that take on key roles within the club. All organizations
go through this process in order to stay current and
relevant. Recently, three of the cornerstones of the
MOR driving events program have retired due to a
variety of good reasons. Each one of these individuals
has made huge contributions to our track events that
have made them successful and famous for excellent
execution.
First, Frank Todaro has done an amazing job of guiding
our DE program using his legal knowledge and crack
negotiating skills. Early in his tenure, he recognized that
the DE community needed more instructors and was
instrumental in getting our first Driving Instructor
Training course organized. In addition, Frank started the
practice of offering professional coaching services at
MOR events. He has given the club a wonderful gift of
his valuable time and insight. Frank will be concentrating
on his Miata racing career going forward. He plans to
be only a phone call away if (when) we need some help
or guidance. John Peecook has agreed to step in (again,
he was CDI before Jeff West!) to help run the Driving
Events portion of the club along with Chip Henderson.
6 helping either, since it developed engine bugs that
eluded the brain trust of the club! So Shannon has
decided to play with her pair of nimble Subaru’s on the
winding country roads around Lancaster and
concentrate on her veterinarian practice. Dave Stetson,
who recently retired from OSU Biology department, has
stepped into the role of DE Registrar. Dave is excited to
be a part of the great MOR DE program.
If you don’t know who Jake Kent is by now, then you
haven’t been at a MOR track event lately. Jake is a force
to be reckoned with! He has been the Paddock Marshall
at Mid-Ohio for all of our events for at least 10 years! He
has been the guy that zips around in a golf cart telling
the big rig drivers where they can and, more importantly,
cannot park. Jake can take the heat these drivers dish
out and keep his humor too! It’s a set of unique
qualifications for sure! Jake has been very active in the
club and enjoyed it with his equally MOR-enthusiastic
wife, Ruth. After he lost Ruth to cancer, Jake remained
active with the MOR track events. Since he is from
Mansfield, his connections to that community helped the
DE and CR programs with a lot of behind-the-scenes
assistance. Jake has recently relocated to the Akron
area, remarried and started a new life there. Many of
the people that are part of the Driving Events scene of
the club will truly miss Jake and his numerous
contributions. The atmosphere in paddock will never
quite be the same without him.
Many thanks to Jake, Shannon and Frank for their
contributions to the club, and we wish them all the best
on their new tracks. Speaking of tracks, make some to
our various club events! Check out the calendar in DOS
or on the web for more information.
Hope to see you soon!
There are two other people that have been critical to
the success of the MOR track events, they are Shannon
Moore and Jake Kent. As the Registrar, Shannon has
been the first point of contact with most DE events,
managing the communications between the future
participants and the club from the moment a new event
gets publicized. With her amazing attention for detail,
she took the job of Registrar to new heights. Every
driver’s history was meticulously researched so the
appropriate run group assignment was made. She
corresponded with every participant several times
before the event, answering all kinds of questions. Her
organizational skills were the key to a successful event.
Shannon has been in this premier role for several
seasons. Like Frank, Shannon had a Miata that was set
up for the track, and she has the skills to drive any road
course. But being Registrar and DE participant left her
little track time at the events. And her Miata wasn’t

I love my DVR because it lets me record auto races. A lot
of auto races. So many races that I sometimes forget to
delete the races after I've watched them. This fills up the
memory and the DVR can’t record the latest episode of
Naked and Afraid. I hate it when that happens. Don’t
make that face – I know you like to watch it too. On the
other hand, over the past
few weeks I was able to
watch a lot of great racing.
From Monaco to Indy to
Charlotte to Le Mans, the
best drivers in the world
have battled it out on the
grandest of stages.
There have also been a number of other great sports
car races that, while maybe not given the same level of
airtime as the races mentioned above, are still great fun
to watch. And if you have been paying attention, one of
the best up and coming stars of sports car racing is one
of our very own. I'm talking about Corey Fergus, an MOR
member who drives a Porsche Cayman in the Pirelli
World Challenge series. At the recent Pirelli WC races
at the Mosport road course in Canada, Corey scored
two firsts and a fourth place finish and he currently holds
the points lead in the series championship. Those are
excellent results, but they don't tell the whole story.
car at the limit is one thing but driving a car at the limit
under that kind of pressure is more than most of us
mere mortals can handle. Imagine landing the Space
Shuttle at night with a tailwind.
The final margin of victory
in that race was .081
seconds. The kid is good –
really good. On top of that,
Corey is probably one of
the nicest guys you will
ever meet. Later this
month, Corey will be on
track again as the Pirelli
WC series goes to Road
Atlanta (broadcasted live
at
www.worldchallangetv.com) and on August 13-15, they will be at
the Mid-Ohio Road Course. MOR along with Byers
Porsche plans to set up a hospitality tent for this race,
so mark your calendars and plan join us as we cheer
Corey (and Porsche) on to another victory! I’ll see you at
the track!
Chip
Corey, a rookie in the Pirelli Series, is racing against the
future stars of professional sports car racing in very fast
cars.
If you managed to see the second race of the Mosport
weekend, you were treated to a lesson in “How to Win a
Sports Car Race” by young Corey. During that race,
Corey fought off a very determined Adam Poland in a
Mazda MX5 for the win. To say the race was close is an
understatement. For most of the race, the MX5
appeared to be stuck to Corey's rear bumper with gorilla
glue. The Mazda challenged the Cayman at every turn
and down every straightaway. Several times the MX5
pulled up alongside, but Corey expertly positioned the
USLED/Axis Roofing Cayman and held his line. Driving a
Corey with his very proud parents. June 2015

Supports The Christopher Carlson Foundation
Again for 2015 The 2015 P2O Porsche car show in Granville will be supporting The Christopher Carlson Foundation,
a local Licking County organization that helps families who are facing pediatric cancer. The Foundation
helps with “meals, travel expenses, lodging, auto repair, utility costs, and many other day-to-day
expenses. They also provide the emotional support to alleviate stresses, from counseling to art classes
and sibling programs.” As stated on their website (http://christophercarlsonfoundation.org/), “Having
a child with cancer puts a lot of emotional and financial strain on a family. We can help ensure that
basic needs don’t become part of that challenge.”
®
The Christopher Carlson Foundation has been a partner with the Mid-Ohio Region Porsche Club of
America to present the annual P2O Porsche car show in Granville. They provide volunteers to help
with parking, registration, and general organization.
®
How can you help? Last year, P2O and the Mid-Ohio Region Porsche Club of America donated
$8,000 to the Christopher Carlson Foundation. That money came from the MaryLynn’s Row P2O
registrations. The best way to ensure additional donations is to register for MaryLynn’s Row.
®
®
Thirteen years ago, P2O was started by Bill and MaryLynn Roe, and has been held in 3 different venues
ever since. In 2006, MaryLynn lost her battle with cancer, and P2O has been honoring her name ever
since with the additional money raised to fight cancer. With the show now in its current Granville, OH
location, The Christopher Carlson Foundation is an excellent LOCAL charity to receive those funds.

great autocross course.
The cars showed up early and
were ready to go as well. All in
all we had a nice turnout of 13
Porsches
and 12 X cars. Two of our X car
participants
are
actually Porsche drivers normally but a faulty alternator for
one and a faulty 928 transmission forced two of our own into
their backup vehicles.
We had a nice variety of Porsches, everything from 944’s,
early 911’s, a couple of Boxsters, a Cayman, a 951, a 928,
and a whole bunch of 996’s. X cars brought out a large variety

I hope to see you out there. Come out and enjoy your car with
us.

The Zone
Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,
PCA strongly encourages the regions to
By Michael Soriano
give back to their communities. I am
Zone 4 Representative
proud to say that in Zone 4 many
regions hold high profile events that raise a
great deal of money for worthy causes. A
number of these events are car shows
that are appealing to members from any
region and fun for the entire family. In
June, CIR hosted CruZionsville benefitting
the Alzheimer’s Association and Zone 4
sponsored the Red Brick Reunion in
Oxford, OH, which supports the American
Cancer Society. This month is ARPCA’s
PVGP (Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix) in
Schenley Park which assists the Autism
Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny
Valley School. In mid-July is P2O (Porsches
to Ohio) in Granville, which supports a
number of Mid-Ohio region’s local charities.
In October, Ohio Valley Region will host Rallye Porsche
Mariemont benefitting local charities.
In addition to all of the large car shows, there are other
ways that Zone 4 regions can make significant
contributions. Many regions give back by collecting
money and goods for local food banks and meal
programs. Southeast Michigan region supports the Jo
Brighton Special Olympics program and is making a
substantial difference. And Michiana region is one of
the sponsors of School Supply Give Away of Gary that
assists over 1300 students annually.
Along with fundraising, PCA members also
donate their time and effort in order to help
make a difference in the community.
Nationally, PCA has partnered with Tire Rack
Street Survival, a program that teaches car
control skills to teens to provide them with
the tools to become safer and smarter
drivers.
I have always been a strong
advocate of the Tire Rack Street Survival
program and have been promoting it at the
Presidents’ Meetings. I am very pleased to
see a positive response from the regions
over the past few years. The initiative has
been quite successful as this year our Zone
is scheduled to hold 5 Street Survival
Schools, the most within PCA.

People that take the time to give of themselves and volunteer for these worthy causes are just a few more ways
that I find the PCA motto to be true. It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People.
Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter, as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org
for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other
regions’
