Challenge A team of students from Massapequa High School’s Healthcare Explorers Club won second place in the Northwell Health Spark! Challenge for their creation of a career advertisement for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nursing, an honor that came with a $1,500 prize. The Spark! Challenge is designed to immerse local high school students in STEM/health careers through coordinated career day events with the hope of igniting their interest in the healthcare field. The Spark! Team from Massapequa visited Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center where they learned about clinical and non-clinical jobs within a pediatric setting. Students took part in a “mock” trauma scenario in the pediatric emergency room and were given a tour of the hospital where they learned how multiple disciplines work collaboratively to deliver exceptional patient care. The students then chose one career they learned about and created a career advertisement and student presentation that was exhibited at the Spark! Student Showcase at the Cradle of Aviation in April. The team from Massapequa won second place after competing with more than 30 teams from schools all over Long Island. “We are so proud of the achievements of our Health Explorers Club and the valuable opportunities that club members are afforded through the Northwell Health Spark! Challenge program,” said Denise DeLury, Massapequa High School’s School-to-Career Coordinator and advisor of the Explorer’s Club. The MHS Healthcare Explorers Club gives students an opportunity to explore careers and trends within the healthcare field through trip to hospitals, job shadowing and internship opportunities, and participation in events such as the Spark! Challenge. It is open to students in grades 10-12. Information about the club is available at www.msd.k12.ny.us/HCExplorers or students can contact DeLury at [email protected]. 2/ East Lake 6th grader Jacqueline Paduano wins Grand Prize in Optimum Black History Month Essay Contest East Lake sixth-grader Jacqueline Paduano always loved to write, and her passion for the art shined through when she was named the Grand Prize of Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Jacqueline competed against 457 sixth- through eighth-grade students, and as one Packet Pg. 7 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) Massapequa Public Schools Massapequa, New York 5.1.a of the youngest contestants in the category, the win was that much sweeter, according to East Lake Principal Thomas McKillop, III. “Jacqueline is very insightful and her essay showcased that,” he said. As Grand Prize winner, Jacqueline won an iPad and a keyboard, which was presented to her by Optimum host Shawna Ryan at her school before Principal McKillop, Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski, Jacqueline’s sixth-grade ELA teacher Kim Cawley and classmates, and her family members, including her mother, Kelly and her siblings, Victor and Ariana, who, with Jacqueline are triplets. Jacqueline was interviewed by Optimum and will appear on the Neighborhood Journal Show on Optimum TV channel 118 on May 15 at 7 p.m.. She will also be featured on Cablevision’s website at optimumcommunity.net/eastlake beginning April 22. When Cawley learned of the essay contest, she jumped at the chance to enter her students. East Lake submitted 90 essays, more than any other school, according to Optimum representatives. All the students received certificates for their achievement in the contest. “I am immensely proud of all of my students, especially Jacqueline, who writes from her heart and to me that’s what writing is about,” Cawley said. 3/ Massapequa School District earns its seventh ‘Best Communities for Music Education’ distinction Massapequa School District has been honored with its seventh “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The district joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016 and is among 15 districts from Nassau County to earn this honor. The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. Dr. David Gaines, Massapequa’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, attributes the recognition to the collective support of the staff, administrators, parents and the school board. “There is tremendous support and enthusiasm on all levels to see that our students have access to an enriching music program and that they receive the support and opportunities they need to be successful student musicians,” Dr. Gaines said. “This honor affirms that our music department, its staff and our programs are at the forefront of music education nationwide.” The seventh recognition rings in some recent milestones and achievements in the district. For the first time, Massapequa High School had two student vocalists, Hannah Bentivegna and Alexia Castle, named Packet Pg. 8 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) The contest challenged students to write a 500 or less word essay on a past or present African American with whom you chose to spend a day and explain why. Jacqueline chose to write about musician Stevie Wonder after she performed a tap routine to his song, “Signed, Sealed and Delivered.” Her essay, titled, “Music in Braille,” points to how inspirational he is as a blind musician and in a descriptive, conversational style explains to the reader how she would spend a day with the music icon. “He is so very interesting and inspiring because he is blind,” Jacqueline said, “and because he is a great example of a person who has fulfilled his dreams.” 5.1.a All-National musicians by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The district also produces one of the highest numbers of All-State musicians in Nassau County. 4/ Art talent of Massapequa High School students showcased at AP Art Exhibit “This exhibit is a culmination of the hard work these students have done throughout the year,” said Art teacher Gale Domingo, who teaches the course. “Students have to create a 24-piece portfolio that includes 12 pieces that are part of a concentration or deeper level artistic theme and 12 other pieces that shows ‘breadth,’ which portrays their skill and knowledge of art in a medium of their choice. The pieces are put into a portfolio and submitted to the College Board for grading.” Domingo said her AP class has been a “wonderful environment where students collaborate, are motivated and inspired by each other,” noting that more students than ever plan on studying art and design in college with students accepted to noted schools such as Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). In addition to the exhibit, AP students recently met with 150 Berner Middle School art students in the Honors by Achievement program to give them some perspective about the high school art program and its AP opportunities, according to Beth Adler, Massapequa’s K-12 Art Chairperson. 5/ Massapequa’s senior athletes sign with college teams Sixty-four Massapequa High School senior athletes will continue their athletic careers on the collegiate level around the country next fall, joining teams at institutions such as Dartmouth, Georgetown, West Point and the U.S. Air Force Academy. “We are extremely proud that our students will lend their athletic talents to these colleges and universities,” said John Piropato, director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. “They will be great assets to their teams as well as their schools next year.” The student athletes and the colleges they will attend are: Baseball players Brandon Fanizza, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT); Matthew Garland, Ramapo College of New Jersey; Thomas Macri, Adelphi University; James Magaldi, Misericordia University; Kyle McLernon, St. Joseph’s College; Justin Schirmacher, Hamilton College; Paul Sirakowski, Ramapo College of New Jersey; Douglas Smith, Mount Aloysius College; James Valenti, College of Mount St. Vincent; Cross Country, Track and Field runners Jake Coleman, Ramapo College of New Jersey; Kelsey Hadsall, Misericordia University; Taylor Rettig, Monmouth University; Diver Sarah Woods, Seton Hall University; Field Hockey player Marisa McCleod, Adelphi University; Football players Bradley Baldinger, Denison University; Kyle Berna, Ithaca College; Thomas Kempton, Buffalo State College; Golf player Matthew Fisher, Utica College; Ice Hockey players Benjamin Benitez, SUNY Albany; Salvatore Corallo, University of Tampa; Joseph Gramegna, U. The students met with staff and students from other Long Island school districts to discuss their current school experiences, best practices and ideas on new prevention innovations. “The Massapequa School District is at the forefront of offering prevention programs to students,” said Kimberley Hession, Ames Campus social worker. “This year, over 70 students in grades 9-12 were trained through the Red Watch Band program, a Stony Brook University-developed school initiative designed to help bystanders learn to effectively respond to alcohol-related emergencies.” To date, under the advisement of Massapequa High School social worker Joanne Waters and Hession, the district has trained more than 300 students in the program. In addition, Hession and the Ames students spearheaded the development of a Massapequa chapter of the Active Minds Club, a nationwide mental health awareness club. Primarily, student members learn the importance of mental health issues and the connections they have to substance abuse among young people. Hession and Waters are also active members of the Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) Coalition which supports prevention efforts within the school and community. 7/ Massapequa High School athlete named Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year Massapequa High School junior Hope Breslin was named Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The award, presented by The Gatorade Company in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, distinguishes Hope as New York’s best high school girls soccer player and recognizes high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. The honor also places her as a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May. Hope, a forward, led the Chiefs (19-1-1) to their historic third straight Class AA state championship, scoring 27 goals and passing for 10 assists this past season. An All-East Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Hope was named both the Class AA Player of the Year and the Long Island Player of the Year. She led her team to a No. 3 ranking nationally in the NSCAA/USA TODAY Super 25. She was also named play off Most Valuable Player last year. Packet Pg. 10 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) 5.1.a 5.1.a “Hope scored the winning goal in the New York State Championship game; she has great foot skills and is a very diverse player; she just keeps getting better and better,” said Coach Bruce Stegner. “For her to win this award as a junior is a huge accomplishment.” Hope has committed as a sophomore to play soccer at Big 10’s University of Illinois where she is considering studying law. She maintains a high academic average, is a peer mentor in her school, and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, youth soccer programs and Best Buddies International. “This honor is well deserved,” said John Piropato, director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics for the Massapequa School District. “Hope is an outstanding athlete and a well-rounded individual who truly exemplifies the spirit of this award.” With this distinction, Hope joins an elite alumni association of famous past state award-winners including Derek Jeter, Candace Parker, Alexi Lalas, Heather O’Reilly, and Mark Sanchez. She is also the fourth Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Massapequa High School. 8/ Famous Author Doreen Rappaport Visits Lockhart Lockhart Elementary School students in grades 4-6 participated in an author visit with Doreen Rappaport. Rappaport is famous for her wonderfully written picture book biographies. Students were introduced to books such as “Abe’s Honest Words,” “Helen’s Big World,” and “Jack’s Path of Courage” during their Library period in the weeks before the visit. Students said they enjoyed the visit greatly and were fascinated by the amount of research that went into writing each book. They also reflected on the ways a real author visit enriches their own reading and writing. 9/ Berner Middle School to present 2nd annual Poetry Slam, May 24 Berner Middle School’s 2nd annual Poetry Slam will showcase the power of the spoken word on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 p.m.in the Berner Library. The evening, titled “Silver Linings,” promises to highlight profound themes that “inspire and uplift the soul,” according to club members. Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Poetry Slam club members Lauren Baroletti, Sarah Benedict, Adriana Kamor, Alexandra Lachnicht, Juliette Liebov, Sam Marsh, Meaghan Phillips, Tyler Ramos, Claire Russell, Matt Smithwick are passionate about their work and have been honing their writing skills for months, producing and rewriting numerous poems that reflect their voice. Each student will be reading one or two of their favorite pieces. “The students really hit the ground running to develop their poetry,” said advisor Marissa Giamarino. “They are incredibly enthusiastic and committed to the craft.” “Our goal is to open people’s eyes,” said club member Sarah Benedict. “You don’t just write poetry, you feel it. When I see my club mates perform, they genuinely mean every single word and the audience intently listens.” Packet Pg. 11 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) Hope said of the award, “When I found out I was so excited. This award means a lot to me, not only on an individual level, but for my team as a whole, which has been so successful. We all work together so well that it’s easier for success. Coach Stegner is so supportive. He’s really good at coaching.” 5.1.a “People will enjoy going to this year’s Poetry Slam because we are focusing on optimism and seeing the bright side of different issues,” said club member Juliette Liebov. Club member Sam Marsh added, “When you start to get into it (writing poetry) and your feelings are strong, you are helping people through your voice. The power of choosing the right words brings it all together.” Joseph Prusen is Valedictorian of Massapequa High School Class of 2016 Joseph Prusan may have grown up around attorneys but the law bug hasn’t bitten him. As valedictorian of the 593-member class at Massapequa High School, he’s setting his sights on the medical field and looks forward to one day becoming a neuro-radiologist practicing somewhere out west. With a Grade Point Average of 99.872, he’s heading to the University of California in Los Angeles in the fall to study bioengineering, a school he chose in part because of the sunny location and because he hopes to gain experience at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center located on the campus. Joseph found inspiration in his career path through his experience as a diabetic. “I have always gotten really good care and was intrigued by my doctors and by articles on the condition and finding a cure,” he said. Much of his high school career focused on science research and working on environmental issues, but he also struck a healthy balance between academics and his social life by making time for friends. Through Massapequa High School’s Science Research Program, of which Joseph was a part of since eighth grade as an advanced science student, he conducted research to see if nylon could prevent rust on metal beads and he is currently working with centipedes to see if proteins in their venom can be used as a natural pesticide. As a senior, he will be presenting his project at the district’s 5th Annual Science Symposium, May 26. As a sophomore and junior, Joseph was recognized by the Dowling College Long Island Youth Summit Essay Contest. He was a finalist for his essay on “Small Scale Hydropower,” and as a winner in his category for his essay on “Proton Exchange Membranes,” which also garnered him a $2,500 scholarship to Dowling College. He credits science teacher Dr. Paul Hesleitner for always being “open and honest with him when he asked for advice about his research and his helping to expose him to science and technology so that he thought about the subjects in ways that he never had before.” He also enjoyed working on science research in a lab outside of Massapequa High School. Also a source of inspiration was his AP English teacher Mr. Robert Hempel, who made the class read the book “Hot, Flat and Crowded” by Tom Friedman, a book about the damages to the environment. Joseph and a group of students started the environmental awareness initiative, Aerify 3.6, which promotes environmentalism through activities such as tree plantings and park clean-ups. Joseph is proud that the club has plans to expand into the Ames Campus. He was also involved in Science Olympiads, has been named an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar of Distinction for his high achievement on AP exams and is a member of National Honor Society. Joseph says his greatest strength is his work ethic and his greatest weakness his tendency to procrastinate. When he is not in school, he enjoys playing football with friends, traveling with family and volunteering in the pediatric radiology wing at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is the oldest of four boys who all have similar interests, he says. His advice for future graduates? “High school is very doable if you work hard and study,” he said. “However, don’t get too involved with school that you neglect spending time with your friends.” Packet Pg. 12 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) 10/ 5.1.a 11/ Juliet Remi is Salutatorian of Massapequa High School Class of 2016 “The best parts of my high school career have been in the court room,” Juliet said. “I’ve learned so much from the Mock Trial team and made incredible friendships. I’ve been to the Harvard Mock Trial seminar twice and have also been a semi-finalist in the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament two years in a row.” The Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor credits her eighth-grade social studies teacher Josee Charvet, who studied law, for first introducing her to law in her class and her Mock Trial advisor and social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who she says is her mentor who treats his students with mutual respect and opens opportunities for all of his students. Juliet is a member of National Honor Society and has earned National Silver Awards for her proficiency in Spanish. She was one of a handful of students who were selected to ask a question at a recent Hofstra Symposium featuring Ed Rolling, former White House Chief of Staff, and Howard Dean, Governor of Vermont, based on the quality of an essay she submitted that had to address the question, “How have political party debates informed voters in the 2016 elections?” Aside from her passion with law, Juliet finds inspiration in her older sister, Reneé, who was also Salutatorian of her graduating class, studied abroad in college, something Juliet hopes to do, and is now a special education teacher in Hawaii and is going to graduate school for a master’s degree in public administration. Juliet said she has learned how to branch out by her sister’s example. During high school, Juliet was also involved in the Chief’s Challenge Club, which works toward improving school culture and providing community service. She was treasurer of the club for one year. She also played intramural basketball, soccer and volleyball, volunteers at her church and is a member of National Honor Society. Her greatest strength, she said, is her strong work ethic and her weakness, she said, is that she tends not to ask for help when she needs it. If she could change anything about high school it would be to get involved earlier and urged upcoming students to “expand their horizons outside their comfort zones, take that random class that you normally wouldn’t consider taking, because you never know where these experiences will lead you.” 12/ Massapequa High School and Ames students earn recognition for excellence on National German Exam Thirty-two Massapequa High School and Ames Campus students were awarded for outstanding performance on the National German Examination (NGE) administered by the American Association of Teachers of German, with nine out of 42 Long Island students to be recognized as placing among the top in the area. Their high achievement puts them on the NGE Presidential Honor Roll, a distinction shared by only two other public high schools on Long Island. Packet Pg. 13 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) Massapequa High School Salutatorian Juliet Remi took a random class as a sophomore in high school that wound up framing her future. As a quiet person who shied away from public speaking, she took a chance on an Introduction to Law class that not only transformed her confidence, but set the foundation for her three years in the high school law program and the Mock Trial team. This year, she is President of the Mock Trial team and is the only member who has a role as a prosecuting and a defending attorney. With a 99.851 grade point average, Juliet heads to Colgate in the fall to study political science and gain “a well-rounded liberal arts education that will challenge her to think critically,” she said. She plans to attend law school and become a trial attorney. 5.1.a Juniors Christopher Hadsall and Alexandra Kanapes won Gold Awards for proficiency on the level 4 exam, the highest exam. Christopher was honored for placing fourth on the exam. Alexandra was recognized by being nominated for the PAD-AATG Study-Abroad Trip to Germany for her achievement. Senior Meghan Goodwin earned a Silver Award and juniors Bailey Rosmarin, Elizabeth Stippell and Joseph Whalen all received Bronze Awards for their achievement on the level 4 exam. Silver Award winners on the level 3 exam consisted of sophomores Thomas Bradbury, Christopher Braglia, Evan Donohue, John Gonzalez, Samantha McGrath and Kaitlyn Migliore. Bronze Award winners were sophomores Ryan Abrigo, Alexis Bardio, James McGarrity and Gillian Murphy. Both Evan and Samantha came in seventh place on the level 3 exam. All students who placed in the top levels will be honored at a special awards dinner on May 23 at Chaminade High School. Freshman at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus took the level 2 exam. Gold Award winners were Ryan Cassano and Anthony Soviero. Silver Award recipients included Domenick Anderson, Andrew O’Brien, Dylan Teima and Kerry Walker. Bronze Awards were given to Mohnish Aggarwal, Jacqueline Cipriano, Eric Curran, Ryan Ginsberg and Luke Scher. These award winners were among nearly 22,000 students who took the 100-question exam nationwide. “We are so pleased to see our students demonstrate proficiency on these exams and congratulate their teachers for their steadfast guidance and preparation,” said William Anderson, curriculum associate for World Languages. Packet Pg. 14 Attachment: MAY 2016 with service awards (2709 : Superintendent's Report - Mrs. Iconis) Several Gold Award winners who took the level 3 exam were also awarded for placing exceptionally high on the test. Senior Thomas Beck placed third and sophomores Christian DeNave placed fifth. Gabriella DiPaola came in first place and Paul Lestingi captured third place. Sophomore Evan Warns was given the Langenscheidt Award for his efforts. 5.1.a Insight May 2016 “Excellence in Education” Employee Service Recognition Day May 2016 To All Faculty and Staff Members: Members of the Board of Education and the Superintendent have selected Wednesday, May 4, 2016 to be designated as Service Recognition Day.
