Report of the Superintendent to the Board of Education
‘Graphic’ motor vehicle accident simulation at Massapequa High school warns students about
drunk driving as prom nears
With senior prom and other festivities on the horizon, Massapequa High School, in partnership with the
Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Police Department, conducted an extremely
realistic Motor Vehicle Accident Simulation on the school‟s football field as a way to “shock and awe”
more than 1,200 juniors and seniors into avoiding dangerous behaviors that could put their lives at risk.
“We want you to see the agony and anguish firefighters go through every day so you don‟t make a
decision that could be fatal,” said Massapequa Fire Chief Gerard Keuchler to the crowd.
The biennial event, first brought to Massapequa High School five years ago, consists of a staged, twocar auto accident involving an intoxicated driver and multiple victims, played by members of the high
school‟s drama department and the Massapequa Fire Department Juniors. One victim ends up on the
hood of a car, DOA, while the driver staggers out of the car obviously under the influence. The
Massapequa Fire Department handles extrication, patient care and removal of victims utilizing heavy
rescue vehicles and the Jaws of Life, while the Nassau County Police Department simulates a DWI test
and subsequent arrest. An NCPD helicopter landing simulates a medical evacuation from the scene.
“We do everything we can to make it as real as possible so students can make the right choices … so
they call their parents and say they need help when they are in a situation that puts them at risk,” said
Massapequa firefighter Stuart Paolino who coordinates the event with Keuchler. “Looking up into the
crowd, he said, “We saved a life today.”

Principal Dr. Barbara Williams reiterated the importance of making positive decisions, noting three
classmates that lost their lives in her graduating class. “You don‟t want to be in a position where you are
mourning your friends, your classmates or your family members,” she said. “The prom is on June 12 and
graduation is on June 22. We want you to be present at these events and we want you to be healthy.”
“This simulation, along with consistent reinforcement of the importance of healthy choices, is an
invaluable opportunity to positively impact our students in our fight against DWI and other Destructive
decisions,” said Lucille F. Iconis, superintendent of Massapequa School District. “We thank the
Massapequa Fire Department, the Nassau County Police Department and our student actors for driving
home such a powerful, life-saving message.”

Four Massapequa ‘Shining Stars’ honored with SCOPE Awards for education excellence
Three Massapequa School District staff members and a longtime district volunteer were honored for
their shining contributions to education excellence during SCOPE Education Service‟s 14th Annual
School District Awards Dinner.
The non-profit organization, which provides educational support services to school districts, presented a
SCOPE 2015 Award of Excellence to Massapequa School District‟s Deputy Superintendent Alan
Adcock, Massapequa High School Special Education teacher Elizabeth Morelli, Massapequa High
School Head Cook Maria Piantanida, and longtime Budget and Finance Committee member Sam Astrof.
“These members of our Massapequa family are truly dedicated and talented individuals who shine
brilliantly as models of educational excellence,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis.
Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock has led the Massapequa Public Schools through challenging
economic times since 1999 by sculpting fiscally sound budgets while preserving a solid educational
program. He is credited with implementing financial procedures and policies that have maintained the
highest level of security and accountability.

“With a smile on his face, he leads by example; setting the stage for excellence. Whether facilitating
the Budget and Finance Committee or building a well-balanced budget, Mr. Adcock sets the gold star
standard,” his nominator wrote to the SCOPE selection committee.
Elizabeth Morelli has served as a special education teacher in the Massapequa Public Schools for more
than a decade. Among her many accomplishments is the development of the Berner Middle School
Buddies Club, a student organization that promotes kindness, respect and acceptance. She has been
central to the development and implementation of a variety of programs that support students with
disabilities, and encourages good character and tolerance
among the general education student population. She is also a staunch supporter of the Massapequa
SEPTA and often serves as a trusted liaison to parents who are dealing with highly challenging
parenting issues and concerns.
Described as one of the hardest working, most dedicated volunteers in the community, Sam Astrof has
served as a valued member of the Board of Education‟s Budget and Finance Committee for the past 24
years, and serves on the Audit Committee as well as other district-focused committees. An “out-of-thebox” thinker, he is known for continuously seeking creative approaches to solve complex issues. As a
former partner of the financial services firm, Ernst & Young, LLP and Chief Financial Officer of two
prominent not-for-profit organizations, his vast financial experience and dedication has greatly assisted
the Massapequa Schools in implementing a successful financial plan. Congratulations to all the
honorees!

Unqua teacher Amy Kanavy-Curry honored for education excellence
Attachment: MAY 2015 with service awards (2304 : Superintendent's Report May 21, 2015)
Maria Piantanida quickly moved up from food service worker to head cook after being hired in 2002,
and the reasons are clear. Her kitchen is well known for its organization and cleanliness; she keeps
detailed records for all production and financial matters, and is conscientious in dealing with each and
every student that comes through her cafeteria. Putting nutrition first, she consistently offers up fresh
fruits and vegetables to her clientele. She is also an integral part of a new “Breakfast & Lunch Delivery”
program which enlists the help of the Special Education Department, and runs a successful
Thanksgiving pie sale at the high school.
Unqua Elementary School teacher Amy Kanavy-Curry was named recipient of the Margaret Simon
Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education by the Long Island Council for the Social
Studies. Kanavy-Curry is the first elementary teacher in Massapequa to be recognized for this award
and will receive it during a ceremony at the Upsky Hotel in Hauppauge, May 28.
As an educator at Unqua for 16 years, and the designated sixth-grade social studies teacher there,
Kanavy-Curry said she feels very lucky to be honored in this manner.
“As educators, we are often rewarded by the reaction of the children we teach, but it is far less common
to be honored or recognized by people in the same profession,” she said. “I like to think I share this
award with all the people I work with and have worked with in Massapequa. We are a family and a lot
of people have supported and inspired me along the way.”
Kanavy-Curry was nominated for the award by Brian Dowd, the district‟s curriculum associate for
social studies, K-12, who called her the “go-to” teacher for social studies teachers in the district‟s five
other elementary schools.
“Amy willingly offers her advice and expertise and is a lifeline for them,” he said.
In describing her classroom, he said, “One of the instructional shifts fostered by the new social studies
frameworks, adopted in 2014, is that students should „do‟ social studies not just be told about it. Amy‟s
students have been „doing‟ social studies since Amy became the designated social studies teacher at
Unqua. It is rare that the students aren‟t engaged in some activity making social studies come alive for
them and making the lessons memorable.”
Kanavy-Curry said she keeps her students engaged by making teaching “fun.”
"I try to get the children to draw conclusions, make inferences and read as much, and as often as
possible,” she explained. “When teaching Ancient History, students act out plays, do yoga, meditate,
examine artifacts, simulate archaeological digs, perform court cases, pretend to be monks, eat Greek
food, dress up like gods and goddesses and try to convince the class who should be the next patron god.”
Because of her efforts, she experienced many proud moments where past students have reached out to
her to express how much they loved her social studies class.
“Two years ago, a former student, Morgan Daly, who is currently studying at The Juilliard School of
Music, sent me a letter. During superstorm Sandy her house had been flooded and while rummaging
through the family‟s belongings, she had come across a huge mosaic that the sixth-grade students had
made together,” she said. “I had raffled it off at the end of the year and she won the art project. She
mailed it to me with a letter about how much the project meant to her, thanking me for being
her teacher.

It was so heartwarming to hear from her after so much time and know that she still remembered what
we
did so long ago.”
Kanavy-Curry, who earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.S. in Reading from Long Island
University at C.W. Post, is a LICSS member as well as a certified yoga instructor. She also can relate to
her student‟s experience with superstorm Sandy as her home in Seaford was destroyed, then finally sold
at the end of 2014. She is currently in the process of finding a new home.

Massapequa H.S. DECA competes in state, world tourneys
Showing strong business skills for the second consecutive year, Massapequa High School juniors Justin
McGowan, Mark Fedoronko and Kevin Hitchings advanced to the DECA International Career
Conference in Orlando, Florida after impressing judges at the state competition in Rochester in early
March. Senior Colin McGuire joined them for the first time.
DECA or Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an international association of high school
students and teachers who work on developing skills in marketing, management and entrepreneurship in
business, finance hospitality, sales and service.
Attachment: MAY 2015 with service awards (2304 : Superintendent's Report May 21, 2015)
Massapequa High School DECA advisor Charles Everitt and the four state award winners joined 18,000
of the most business-minded students and teachers from around the world to compete in their respective
categories for international recognition. DECA has a total membership of 220,000 worldwide.
Justin, Kevin and Mark, who is vice president of the club, competed in the International Business Plan
category, the same category as last year. Their project consisted of a 30-page paper and presentation on
the overseas expansion of the popular burger chain, Five Guys, to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Colin made
his mark in the Principles of Business Management category, which focuses on ethics in the workplace.
In that category, Colin was given 10 minutes to determine a way to handle a role-play situation. All four
of them presented their work to a panel of judges and were asked a series of questions immediately
following the presentation. While the four did not place in their categories in the international
tournament, making it to the competition was an accomplishment in itself and the experience, they said,
was “fun and rewarding.”
A total of 16 Massapequa students competed in the state competition against 3,000 students. In addition
to the four award winners, four others earned medals for placing in the top 10 in their category. They
included seniors Vinny Coghill, DECA president, and Jeremy Weiss, as well as juniors John Merz and
A.J. Mastrobuoni. Vinny, John and A.J. came in fifth place and were next in line to compete in the
international competition if a teammate had to drop out.
“The students have worked really hard since September to develop their projects and presentations,”
Everitt said. “I am so proud of their achievements and the knowledge they gained through their
experiences this year.”

Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) to promote proficiency and assess a national standard.
The exam was taken by more than 152,000 students in grades 6-12.
“We are delighted to see so many of our students demonstrate proficiency on these exams and
commend their teachers for their outstanding guidance and preparation,” said William Anderson,
curriculum associate for World Languages.

Unqua Elementary School tops Long Island with $33,575 raised for American Heart Association
Unqua Elementary School students jump roped their way to raising $33, 575 for the for the American
Heart Association “Jump Rope for Heart” campaign. The final tally was the second highest ever raised
on Long Island — behind the school‟s own record last year of $34,666 — and will likely place them
among the top schools across the state once again.
Thanks to the generosity of the Unqua School community, the school has raised the most money on
Long Island seven years in a row, according to physical education teachers Mike Dellicurti, Melissa
Osborne, Mike Viola and Kevin Shippos, who organize the event. In 2014 and 2011 the school placed
second in the state.
“The campaign is a great way to motivate students to lead healthy lifestyles while teaching them the
importance of helping others,” Dellicurti said. “The students have a great time jumping and moving,
something they are taught to do on a daily basis to keep their hearts strong.”

German Exam
Attachment: MAY 2015 with service awards (2304 : Superintendent's Report May 21, 2015)
As in previous years, the school was awarded $1,000 and two plaques acknowledging its outstanding
fundraising efforts.
Thirty-three Massapequa High School and Ames Campus students were awarded for outstanding
performance on the National German Examination (NGE) administered by the American Association of
Teachers of German. Their high achievement places them on the NGE Presidential Honor Roll, a
distinction shared by only two other public high schools on Long Island.
Junior Meghan Goodwin and senior Kaitlyn Peterson, each earned a Silver Award on the level 4 exam,
while seniors Christina Conkling, Kyle Fehn and Brian Walker earned Bronze Awards.
Three sophomores, Christopher Hadsall, Alexandra Kanapes and James Kuoppala, earned the highest
scores in their class on the level 3 exam, winning a Gold Award and a 4-week study abroad trip to
Germany for scoring in the 90th percentile or higher on the exam. Sophomores Thomas Koemm, Bailey
Rosmarin and Kevin VanVorst received Silver Awards, and Bronze Awards went to sophomores Megan
Colozzo, Angelica Radomski and Elizabeth Stippell.
Ninth-grade students at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus took the level 2 exam. Gold Award
winners were Ryan Abrigo, Thomas Beck, Gabriella DiPaola, John Gonzalez, Samantha McGrath,
Gillian Murphy and Evan Warns. Silver Award recipients included Alexia Bardio, Thomas Bradbury,
Christopher Braglia, Christian DeNave, Keirnan Garcia, Paul Lestingi, Samuel Mahoney and James
McGarrity. Bronze Awards were given to Evan Donahue and Tyler Rimkunas. These award winners
were among 22,000 students who took the 100-question exam nationwide.

Massapequa High School-Ames Campus learns the startling facts about drugs on the
teenage brain
Did you know that drugs affect the teenage brain differently than an adult brain? Or that much of the
marijuana distributed in this country is laced with methamphetamine? These startling facts, and much
more, were presented to students at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus during a presentation
entitled “The Effects of Drugs on Teenage Brains” by Dr. Stephen Dewey, PhD.
Dr. Dewey conducts research on the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain at the Center for
Neurosciences at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore-LIJ. He explained how the
teenage brain is still forming and how different drugs affect neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and
dopamine. Many times, he said, these effects are permanent and come with consequences that will stay
with users for the rest of their lives. Dr. Dewey also discussed the latest trends in alcohol abuse among
teenagers and college students, particularly fraternities and sororities. Called “eyeing” and “tamping,”
both are ways to get alcohol into the bloodstream quickly through various orifices in the body, and the
combined irreversible effects range from blindness, sterilization and sepsis, a potentially life-threatening
infection.
Dr. Dewey‟s presentation intensified students‟ awareness and urgency to make good decisions by
bringing to life the lessons Health teachers discuss in class. Using visual displays, students viewed brain
scans and photos of drug users and the irreparable damage that was caused by drug abuse. Many
students listened intently and asked questions at the end of his presentation.
“Remember, the decisions you make will stay with you; you own them,” Principal Patrick DiClemente
said to students. “I encourage you to not only control your own environment, but to use your influence
to be a positive force for others.”

Massapequa School District student-musicians perform with Metropolitan Youth Orchestra 6.1.a
of NY
Six students from the Massapequa School District are making their mark as some of the most formidable
student musicians in the region. In addition to performing in music festivals with the best musicians
from the county, and in some cases, the state, east coast and nation; they also are performing as
members of the selective Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO). In fact, all were invited to
be on stage for an MYO concert at Carnegie Hall, May 31.
Massapequa High School senior Angelica Ansbacher, a clarinetist who performs with MYO‟s Nassau
Principal Orchestra, is an NYSSMA All-State and All-Eastern musician and was selected for All-County
ensembles since fifth grade. She is also president of the Massapequa High School chapter of Tri-M
Music Honor Society and has honed her musical talent at the New York State Summer School of the
Arts School of Orchestral Studies.
Bass player Robert Catinella, also a senior, performs with MYO‟s Suffolk Principal Orchestra and was
also a finalist in the MYO 2014-2015 Concerto and Vocal Competition this winter. His recording of
Bottesini's "Concerto No. 2 in B minor, mvt. 1" was chosen out of more than 30 submissions, which he
then played in the competition against four other instrumentalists. He is the second Massapequa High
School student to be named an All-National musician by the National Association for Music Education
(NAfME). He is also an All-Eastern and an All-State musician, and has been selected for All-County
ensembles since fifth grade. A Tri-M Music Honor Society member, Robert has also played with the
Long Island String Festival throughout high school.

Massapequa High School junior Alexia Castle, an alto, performs with MYO‟s Nassau Chamber Chorale,
the most selective choral ensemble, and Berner Middle School eighth-graders Alayna Carroll, an alto,
and Maria Leonardi, a soprano, perform with the Nassau Concert Choir.
Alexia is an All-Eastern and All-State musician and has been named All-County since fifth grade. She is
a member of the high school A Capella Choir and the Chordette Choir and has played supporting roles
in the high school musicals.
Both Alayna and Maria are All-County musicians who have taken advantage of the musical
opportunities at Berner Middle School, including roles in school musicals and solos in concerts. Alayna
is a member of the choral club, Vocal Points, and takes private voice lessons. Maria played the lead in
the musical “All Shook Up” won first place among the eighth-grade class in the Berner Idol singing
contest.
Unqua Elementary School sixth-grader Adriana Kamor, the youngest member from the district, plays
the cello in the Nassau String Orchestra. The two-time All-County musician has also played with the
Gemini Youth Orchestra, and this year, performed a level 5 NYSSMA solo.
“These students are not only talented, they work extremely hard, and we're proud of everything they've
accomplished with MYO this season,” said Nicole Fox, personnel and membership manager of MYO.
Students are accepted into MYO based on their execution of a solo piece and a sight-reading excerpt,
and rehearse weekly for up to two and a half hours. This season, each student had an average of four
performances: three formal concerts and one community performance. The formal concerts were held at
Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Staller Center for the
Arts and LeFrak Concert Hall. The community performances included venues such as Parker Jewish
Institute, Hempstead House at the Sands Point Preserve and The Feinstein Institute for Medical
Research.
“We are certainly proud that the quality of our music program and our educators has prepared these
students to expand their repertoire of musical opportunities by performing with the Metropolitan Youth
Orchestra,” said Dr. David Gaines, the district‟s curriculum associate for music, K-12. “Their
determination, dedication and commitment are qualities that will propel them to the next level of
musical achievement.”
Massapequa School District has consistently been recognized for music education excellence and has
recently received its sixth consecutive distinction as a “Best Communities for Music Education” by the
National Association for Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The district is also one of only three in
Nassau County that produced 10 or more All-State musicians.
