Success

“I’m very flamboyant, I guess.” For at least one
evening in late March, her natural flamboyance
was a very good thing for Victoria Ward.
The 23-year-old aspiring model was one of 10 young ladies who made
it onto the runway of Jacksonville Magazine’s annual Cover Model Fashion
Show, held March 25 at the Casa Marina Hotel. The courtyard of the historic beachside inn made for a truly beautiful setting, one that was ideal
for finding the next fresh face to grace the cover of our publication.
“I was nervous at first,” she says of the night of the show. “I’m not a
very competitive person. But all the other girls were so nice and backstage was organized and not as hectic as many fashion shows—which
I really liked—that pretty soon I started to feel confident.”
That confidence poured out of Ward as she strutted the runway for
five separate walks. Like all the models that evening, Ward’s wardrobe
was provided by a local fashion boutique. She quickly made the clothing
her own, taking over the runway and pulling the audience in with her
sassy humor and striking appearance.

or a model, making the cover of Jacksonville
Magazine is no small accomplishment. And it’s
a feat that can help open many other doors in
the modeling and fashion industries. It has
before. In fact, two winners of the
TV show America’s Next Top Model
appeared on our cover before winning the
reality show and signing with a top national
agency.
Past successes by area models, specifically
professional achievements by Yoanna House
and Whitney Thompson, were the inspiration
for the magazine to create the annual Cover
Model Search contest and fashion show. We
were thrilled to have Yoanna, who first
appeared on one of our covers back in 2003
and who won Tyra Bank’s modeling talent
show in 2004, in attendance at this year’s fashion show. She had the honor of announcing
the 2010 winner, Victoria Ward, as well as the
two runners up based on the votes of the audience and our panel of judges.
Ward, the daughter of two ministers, says
she’s been modeling since she was 12. “I was
tall and skinny. And I didn’t play sports.” So,
even at an early age, modeling seemed like a
natural fit. By day, the Alabama native and
Talladega College alum works as a loan and
loss mitigation officer (“bill collector,” she says)
at GMAC. By night, she dreams of fashion
show runways in New York, Miami and Los
Angeles.
We hope she makes it all the way to the top.
