On March 11, 2011 the north eastern
region of Japan was devastated when it
was hit by the largest earthquake on
record, followed by a powerfully
destructive tsunami. Since then the
people in those areas have lost
everything including their loved ones.
Collectively, the world is reaching out to
Japan, donating funds to hopefully help
rebuild the many lives affected by this
horrific tragedy.
In an effort to locally make an impact...,
JOI Media and the Calgary Japanese
Community Association (CJCA) have
teamed up to raise awareness, by
launching the "Hope For Japan"
campaign. The campaign will raise funds
for the CJCA, who in turn will donate to
organizations in Japan that are in the
most need. A fundraiser will be held to
support the local organization and to
assist where possible.
What to expect: Silent auctions, live
performances, speakers, hand crafted
items, door prizes, 50/50 draw, and a
variety of local DJs.

We were sad to see Ming Ko and Jamie Finley
stepping down from their positions as Chair
and Treasurer respectively. Both ladies
worked exceptionally hard to make JETAA
Southern Alberta successful for the past
several years.
The Vice-Chair, myself, was unanimously
voted into the vacant Chair position. Jenn
Kennedy remained in place as our Event
Coordinator.
Arc Photinopoulos was voted in as Vice-Chair,
but recently resigned from his position. Thanks
go to Arc for all his hard work as well. We wish
him well upon the job hunt!
We want to thank everyone who came out to
the event and expressed their interest in
volunteering at some of our future events! We
look forward to seeing all of you!

CJCA Open House and Fundraiser
March 19, 2011
On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the
Calgary Japanese community held an
open house/fundraiser in support of the
Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami relief
efforts. Hosted at the Calgary Nikkei
Cultural & Senior Centre, the “Wings to
Japan” Fundraiser featured
entertainment by our local cultural groups,
craft tables selling various Japanese
items, food donated from various
sponsors, and most importantly served
as an outlet for people to donate to the
relief efforts.
The community was overwhelmed by the
outpouring of support from both the
Japanese community and general public.
“We really didn’t have an monetary
expectation”, said Kevin Okabe, chair of
the CJCA earthquake/tsunami relief
committee. “This was more of an event to
get the community together to let
Calgarians know what we’re doing in
terms of relief efforts. We never expected
an attendance of approximately one
thousand people and that over $80,000
in funds would be raised for the Japan
Disaster Relief Effort. We wish to thank
all of the volunteers, donors and
attendees for making this event so
memorable and successful.”
The Calgary Japanese community will continue
its fundraising efforts and is planning other
activities and events including a gala
fundraising dinner on the evening of April 17,
2011. Full details about future events will be
released shortly. Please check our website at

Canadian JET Programme
Alumni Band Together To Raise
Funds For Japan!
By JETAA Canada
March 23, 2011
Thousands of members of the Japan
Exchange and Teaching Programme
Alumni Association of Canada (JETAA
Canada) are banding together to help
Japan after the devastating earthquake
and tsunami of March 11. The seven
regional Canadian chapters of former
JET Programme participants across the
country are hosting a number of benefit
events aimed at disaster relief and
rebuilding the devastated areas of
northeastern Japan. This nation-wide
initiative, to show support, create
awareness and raise funds for Japan, will
bring together JETAA chapters,
Japanese-Canadian communities and
locally based Japanese cultural
organizations. All of these groups will
work together, to share knowledge and
resources towards the goal of helping
Japan in this time of need.
Below is a listing of events throughout
the country. Connect with the JETAA
Canada Facebook page for updates.

The event is open to those aged 19-and-up. All
proceeds go to the Canadian Red Cross Japan
Earthquake/Asia-Pacific Tsunami fund. If you
