THE DON DIEGO SKI CLUB NEWSLETTER ISSUE 126 April 2013 SKI CHATTER THE DON DIEGO SKI CLUB IS A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION HTTP://WWW.SKI-DONDIEGO.ORG GREETINGS DON DIEGO MEMBER Spring time------ When we were planning the March trip we were hoping for winter conditions--- in fact we got both, winter and spring conditions. The division happened Wednesday. All the slopes were up and ready for pleasure Monday thru Wednesday having blue skies, winter snow and temps in the mid 50s at the base. Thursday we had a cloud over us in the morning which limited visibility and kept the snow hard. The daylight saving time change was not in our favor, the afternoon was better. Friday we had the sun back and all was good. We noticed that the Monday and Friday were noticeably more crowded than what we were used to. We in most part were able to get in front of the crowds. However, we did have one collision event, fortunately only lumps and bruising, get well Verena. Carolyn lead a great trip, everything went according to plan--Monday with a light dinner and Wednesday pizza, great bus service, and club member mingling. We had a new member on this trip, I hope Jocelyn that you had a good time. Remember that the election for club officers is approaching fast. If you have ever had any ambition of being somebody someday this might be your last chance. Contact any present officer for info and encouragement. We will be at Casa Machado cafe for our April meeting. This might be the last meeting here because Fillipi's is supposed to be finished with their remodeling by the May meeting. See flier on page 7. Mammoth Midweek #3 Trip Leader Report: Sunday morning early, I think it was really 8am even though the clocks all said 9am, all were on the bus at Montgomery Field ready to head up to the snows of Mammoth. Our bus driver Eddie told us that there was a missing gas cap and that someone would be delivering it to us soon. As the time rolled on we were still sitting and not moving, so we decided to serve our breakfast. Finally an hour later the gas cap arrived. The driver forgot to turn ahead his clocks! Even though we got a late start we still arrived at SNL during daylight. Unfortunately Chris, who provided us with the breakfast served by Verena, was ill and did not join us. Also missing was Cesar who stayed home to be with Carole while she faced some medical problems. Both were missed. The sun shone brightly every day and the temperatures got into the high 50's in the afternoon. Snow was hard in the AM and soft in the late PM, but we all survived with smiles on our faces. There were parties on Monday evening, the cocktail kind, and pizza from Nik-N-Willies on Wednesday. Thursday we had a "fireside chat" with coffee and Irish cream and left over cake as the highlights. Tuesday a large group of us went to the Happy Hour at Whiskey Creek and had delicious dinners. Hopefully everyone had plenty to eat, drink and had lots of fun on this the last trip of the season. There were a few minor spills and a major run-in on Friday on the Face of 3. Fortunately no major injuries, but Verena got mighty bruised. I want to thank everyone for helping to make this a successful and fun trip. There were no whiners aboard! Thanks again, Carolyn your fearless trip leader MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION Nonmembers are always welcome at club meetings. (reprinted from the NATIONAL SKI CLUB NEWSFLASH) Proposed New Heli-Ski Operation Near Telluride According to the Denver Post, Todd Chapman, a controversial property-rights advocate known for proposing developments to “add value” to remote mining parcels in pristine terrain and forcing the Forest Service or others to buy the properties -- often to prevent the development -- has announced plans to develop a 1,300-acre helicopter- and human-powered ski area in the steep terrain of a basin popular with backcountry skiers near Telluride. He said that he and his partner, Ron Curry, have begun the formal permitting process to access Forest Service land surrounding the 103-acre belt of mining claims they acquired in 2010 -- but the Forest Service says that they have not received any proposal and that part of the area Chapman and Curry are claiming is already inside the permit for Telluride’s Helitrax Skiing. Is it an industry shake-up or a shake-down? Google Maps Now Includes Ski Resorts Google announced that its Google Maps app, which is available for free on Androids and iPhones, now includes 38 new maps of ski runs and lifts from some of the most popular ski resorts in the United States and Canada. There are also other maps available: Ski TrailMaps Pro, $3.99 on Android, and iTrailMap, free on iPhone, offers digital versions of several resort maps for download, and also include snow forecasts, weather reports and slope webcams. The Ski Tracks app, $0.99 on iPhone, is a GPStracking app that allows you to record your runs for the day. X Games Venue May Change ESPN has announced that it’s entertaining new venues for the X Games with a final announcement due in April 2013. The 2014 X Games will be held in Aspen, Colo., where they have been held since 2002. ESPN has announced a list of eligible winter destinations for 2015-2017 games that include Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Park City, Utah; Le Massif, Quebec; and Aspen. According to their press release, “The aim is to explore different options and determine what is best for the progression and growth of the X Games franchise. Official proposals from the qualified entities were due to ESPN by April 2.” Past winter X Games have generated up to $10 million in revenue for the host location and attracted 20,000 to 25,000 spectators a day, plus a TV audience of 232 million. Jackson Hole Intermediate Terrain much improved In a trip report, the Charlotte Ski and Snowboard Club (NC) reports that Jackson Hole’s intermediate skiing has greatly improved with the addition of the new state-of-the-art Casper highspeed, 4-passenger, detachable chairlift last summer when the resort also expanded some existing trails to make them more attractive to intermediate skiers. Also, in 2011, they added the Marmot lift that services intermediate terrain from the top of the Gondola to the base of the Thunderlift. THE BUTTERFLY SKIER AN ENDANGERED SPECIES? by Joanna Cikste “She looks like a butterfly when she skis,” some (I thought) kind soul said but then I wondered what they meant. Was it really a compliment or a veiled criticism of my style? I like to ski with precision and finesse preferring to take a slower but more measured route down (now) more groomed slopes where I can anticipate and plan and then execute each turn with control and refinement. I find bombing down slopes with abandon, breakneck speed (What? Only 3 turns to get down that slope?), adding up accumulated vertical feet - an assault against years of painstaking adherence to technique and competent execution. When we started skiing, the turn was of paramount importance. We flocked to ski school and technique weeks learning to turn more smoothly, with more control, and to master that parallel turn. They who had mastered those perfect turns were everyone’s role models. The supreme master was Stein Ericksen, he of the “legs together” school. If our legs came apart, we were certifiable failures; it was a matter of personal pride. Where does the butterfly come in? Lito states that most beginners today are taught to ski with the legs apart; he considers this stance “training wheels” that frequently programs the railroad track skier, a habit difficult to break. He does not advocate jamming the feet next to each other or worse yet skiing with one knee jammed behind the other. His advice is to weight that outside ski and then keep the unweighted leg more less near or parallel to the ski you are standing on. A narrower stance makes it easier to shift your weight from ski to ski. Try shifting your weight in the mirror in a narrow stance and then with legs hip distance apart. Lito concludes that we can forget about form i.e. looking graceful on skis. When you move easily from one position of balance to the next, you are graceful and you succeed in gaining more result with less effort. I am happy that I have found support for the narrower stance and feel that the butterfly will continue to have pride of position on the ski slopes. The equipment then was against us. I am 5’4” and I started on skis that were possibly 190cm, then 185cm, where my bent hand could reach; this dropped to the bent wrist at around 180 cm equal to my last pair of non-parabolics. The long skis were beyond my mediocre athleticism to pressure into those reverse camber turns. During the mid-90’s, I was still stuck in the intermediate rut with a graceless stem turn frequently sneaking in. Obviously, I would never ski like Stein without some serious assistance. This came in the form of LitoTejada-Flores and his book “Breakthrough on Skis.” There was also the advent of parabolic skis with their deeper sidecuts allowing simple weight shifts to initiate and maintain turns plus the acceptance of shorter ski lengths. On parabolic skis I have dropped from 167cm to approx. 150cm today. Lito’s book was written just before the parabolic paradigm shift but his advice still holds: use the ski design rather than brute Officers President President Larry LarryPickering Pickering 858-755-6580 858-755-6580 President President Larry LarryPickering Pickering Past PastPresident President Connie ConnieSmith Smith 760-347-2306 619-795-2121 Vice VicePresident President DarleneLittle DarleneLittle Vice VicePresident President Noni Darlene Henning Little 619-437-8941 858-679-7734 Secretary Secretary Sara SaraLewis Lewis 616-443-4019 616-443-4019 Secretary Secretary Sarah SarahLewis Lewis 616-443-4019 616-443-4019 Treasurer Treasurer Dale DaleShannon Shannon 619-444-0261 619-444-0261 Treasurer Treasurer Dale DaleShannon Shannon 619-444-0261 619-444-0261 Directors Directors Roberte RoberteBentrott Bentrott 858-278-2165 858-278-2165 Directors Directorsat Roberte RoberteBentrott Bentrott 858-278-2165 858-278-2165 atat Don DonBentrott Bentrott 858-278-2165 858-278-2165 Large at Carolyn Harry Eastman 858-551-8252 Large Large Carolyn Carolyn Large Carolyn Blumenthal 858-457-2418 Blumenthal Blumenthal 858-457-2418 858-457-2418 AnneBlumenthal Heye 858-279-8178 858-457-2418 Rodgers RodgersMagee Magee 858-272-7024 858-272-7024 Club Founders Joe Rodgers Harris Magee Bruce 858-272-7024 Barr Club ClubFounders Founders Joe JoeHarris Harris Bruce BruceBarr Barr Advertising Club FoundersAnne Joe Harris Heye 858-279-8178 Bruce Barr Advertising Advertising Anne AnneHeye Heye 858-279-8178 858-279-8178 Council Advertising Rep Helen AnneHarris Heye 619-283-8559 858-279-8178 Council CouncilRep Rep Helen HelenHarris Harris 619-283-8559 619-283-8559 Sunshine Council Rep Rep Anne Helen Heye Harris 858-279-8178 619-283-8559 Sunshine SunshineRep.
