WELCOME AND HELLO. Allow me to introduce you
to the wonderful town of Van Buren. If you are a newcomer, you
will quickly see that this area is full of rich history, progressive
industries, beautiful scenery, and friendly folks. To you locals,
this guide will serve as a reminder of all the wonderful businesses and amenities our community offers and give you the
chance to learn a little bit more about this place we call home.
As your Van Buren Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, it is my privilege to serve this unique region which boasts
a diverse business community, forward thinking educational
institutions, an appreciation for the arts, and so much more.
Local leaders work cooperatively to promote growth, while
preserving Van Buren’s rich legacy as one of the state’s oldest
townships.
The city’s economic base is comprised of numerous industries and businesses large and small, ranging from national retailers to mom-and-pop businesses that have stood the test of
time. Tourism, retail, transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing are among just a few of the region’s thriving trades. The
Van Buren School District remains firmly committed to setting
its students up for a bright future by offering innovative curriculum, incorporating the latest technologies and by partnering
with businesses, organizations, and higher education institu-
tions. Students and other residents have
direct access to thriving art centers and
programs throughout the area as well.
Breathtaking scenery and vast recreational
opportunities can also be found at every Jackie Krutsch

hether it is a leisurely stroll through historic Main Street’s shops and restaurants, or a quick trip to the market for essentials, there is no shortage of places

Whether on the hunt for the perfect gift

Buren businesses do not disappoint. The
city proudly boasts a diverse mix of big
box retailers and family-owned establishments, giving residents plenty of purchasing options for whatever their need.

Van Buren leaders agree with founding
father Ben Franklin in their value of education’s importance to a community. With a
motto of, “Every Child-Whatever it Takes,”
the Van Buren School District is committed to ensuring the success of its students
through quality curriculum, extracurricular
opportunities, access to modern technology, and well-trained, professional staff.
VBSD is comprised of 10 schools: six
elementary schools (grades K-5, with
some schools also offering preschool),
two middle schools (grades 6-8), a freshman academy (grade 9), and the high
school (grades 10-12). The district also
operates a Career Center for students
grades 9-12. At each location, high standards are set for both students and staff.
Rigorous curriculum models help prepare
students of all ages for learning at the next
level. Advanced Placement Courses and
concurrent credit courses are offered to
high schoolers, to ready them for college and the workplace. VBSD also offers
several special programs, including gifted
and talented, workforce education, special
education, and an alternative education
program to help meet the needs of all
learners.
The incorporation of modern technology into day-to-day classroom experiences
is also a key focus of the district. Leaders
understand that they must utilize technology in order to properly prepare students
for today’s workplace and the workplace
of the future. Van Buren High Schools’
New Tech fosters critical thinking, collaboration, oral and written communication,
work ethic, and overall content knowledge through its unique technologycentered learning environment. Curriculum places an emphasis on 21st century
skills. A part of the national NT Network,
the program boasts an annual graduation
rate of 97% and a 4-year cohort rate of
86%.
Learning is done not only in the classroom, but on the field, and the court, and
in whatever structured extra-curricular
setting a student chooses. From foot
ball to quiz bowl, schools offer a number
of sports, arts, academic, and service
programs that further enhance the overall
education experience.
Wherever a child’s strength lies, there
is some sort of outlet available to them to
help further develop their talent or interest. The District proudly boasts countless honors and award-winning teams,
bands, and other groups throughout the
various grade levels.
Communication is also an important
factor in ensuring student success.
Stakeholders include but are not limited
to students, parents, teachers, staff,
community leaders, the media, and the
city as a whole. VBSD strives to promote
its message and goals through the use
of modern technologies, including mobile

Just over the bridges is the continuallyexpanding University of Arkansas at Fort
Smith. Having evolved from Fort Smith
Junior College, to Westark Community
College, and now UAFS, the four-year
university is fully accredited by the Higher
Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
With more than 7000 students, UAFS
offers a wide-variety of degree programs,
including bachelor’s and associate’s degrees, as well as technical certificates in
a number of areas. For the first time in its
history, the school now offers a graduate
degree, giving students the opportunity to
complete a Master’s of Science in Healthcare Administration.
The online program provides students
with the knowledge and skills they will
need as leaders in the U.S healthcare
marketplace, which includes overseeing
business and financial aspects of hospitals, clinics, and other health services
organizations.
In addition to programs of study, UAFS
also serves as a valuable resource to

The Center For Art & Education began with
a dream that every citizen of the River Valley
could experience the arts. The first art exhibits
hosted by the Crawford County Art Association
were held in banks, the library, and the Frisco
Depot. For three years meetings and workshops were held in private homes, banks and
community centers.
In 1979 a home at 423 North 12th Street
was purchased to house the center, making the dreams of our eight founders a reality. Then, in 1984, the association moved to
a new home in the old St. Michael’s Catholic
Church, and in 2003 the name was changed
to Center For Art & Education to better reflect
the mission.
Today, CAE serves thousands of adults and
children each year by providing art education
and fostering art appreciation through rich,
cultural experiences that are both meaningful
and memorable.
CAE hosts summer camps for students in
communities throughout the River Valley,
hosts monthly art shows in the
two galleries, and provides classes for
both beginn e r s

experts throughout the year.
Crawford County Courthouse
Named as the seat of Crawford County in
1838, Van Buren is home to the Crawford
County Courthouse, which remains the oldest
operating court building west of the Mississippi
River. The original structure was constructed in
1842, but suffered major damage as a result of
the war and arson. The courthouse resides on
property that was donated by what many consider to be the “founding father of Van Buren,”
John Drennen. Atop the building is the famous
Seth Thomas clock tower, which was purchased with donations of local townspeople of
that time.
An ornate statue and fountain can also be
found outside the historic courthouse. Hebe,
the Greek goddess of youth and happiness, was
erected on the Crawford County Courthouse
lawn in 1908 by the Women’s Village Improvement Society. Over time, the statue deteriorated and fell into disrepair.
Thanks to
a
campaign by the GFWC-Women’s League of
Van Buren in 2003, Hebe was restored and returned to her rightful place, where she continues to stand today.
The original Albert Pike Schoolhouse also
sits on the courthouse grounds. The one-room
school was used by the famed local resident
and military general, Albert Pike, and has been
preserved to look as it did during Pike’s lifetime.
The meticulously kept-building is believed to be
one of the oldest structures in Arkansas.

One of the most vivid examples of history coming to life is the Drennen Scott Historic Site.
Constructed in 1836, the house served as the
home of John Drennen and his descendants for
many generations. It is linked in one way or another to the Trail of Tears, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War in Arkansas. In 2005, the
University of Arkansas Fort Smith acquired the
historic structure, and completed a $5.5 million
restoration, that included adding a full-service
visitor’s center on the house’s grounds.
Many of the home’s original furnishings can be
seen throughout, including a kitchen table the
family purchased in the 1860s, and a 1764
grandfather clock. In addition to serving
as a major tourist attraction for the
area, the Drennen Scott Historic
Site is used as a working laboratory for UAFS involved with the
university’s history program.

Residents looking to take in a play or concert performance don’t have to venture far. The Van Buren
Fine Arts Center, annually hosts renowned traveling
shows and nationally-recognized musicians, providing
the city a true cultural gem. Located on the sprawling Van Buren High School campus, the 1,500 seat
concert hall features a beautiful stage, state-of-theart lighting and sound equipment, and a world-class
Steinway Grand Piano.
Legendary performers have included Travis Tritt,
Three Dog Night, Ronnie Milsap, The Glenn Miller Orchestra and many others, drawing both local fans and
out-of-town visitors. Families have enjoyed
fun shows including Seussical the Musical
and the unique stylings of Imago Theater’s
Zoo Zoo, a blend of dance, mime, creative

CELEBRATIONS
Citizens mark their calendars each
year in anticipation of Van Buren’s annual
festivals and parades. Every May, The
Old Town Merchants Association hosts
Old Timers Day, bringing more than 200
craft, food, clothing and antique vendors
to Main Street for the weekend festival.
Live entertainment appears on the main
stage, featuring both local acts and many
nationally-recognized artists. Fall Festival
returns every October, bringing with it
vendors, music, and fun carnival-style
rides and games for families to enjoy.
Halloween on Main Street is also a popular family-affair, inviting residents to sport
their best costumes and trick-or-treat at
the downtown merchants.
Parades are also a big tradition in Van
Buren. Celebrating the start of exciting
seasons and holidays for the region. The
Pioneer Days Parade in May ushers in
the Old Fort Days Rodeo, which has a
nearly century long connection to Van
Buren and Fort Smith. Families also line
the street on Veterans’ Day and in December to welcome Santa and kick-off
the holidays.
The parade is just one of the many
ways that Van Buren observes the Christmas season. In November, Main Street
merchants debut their holiday decor and
products during the town’s Christmas
Open House. On the first Saturday of
December, the Van Buren Chamber of
Commerce hosts its annual Festival of
Trees, in conjunction with the Crawford
County Courthouse’s official lighting
ceremony. Visitors then make their
way downtown to browse the “Living
Windows,” where shops transform their
windows into scenes of Christmas past
and throw open their doors for guests
to come in and enjoy treats, coffee, and
hot cider.

One of the most impressive aspects
of Van Buren is its picturesque surroundings. Located in the heart of the
Arkansas River Valley, the area is home
to many state parks and nature centers,
which capitalize on the land and its rustic charm, as well as recreational areas
to enjoy outdoor sports such as golf
and baseball. Fishing, biking and hiking
are also favorite local past times, with
residents having easy access to many

Avid golfers can enjoy a day on the

Van Buren is home to one of the region’s first-rate sports complexes, the
Field of Dreams. The complex, located
at Interstate 40 and Lee Creek Road,
consists of five youth baseball fields,
three regulation baseball fields, three
youth softball fields, an indoor training
area and a practice batting cage. The
Field of Dreams has hosted numerous
state and regional tournaments, including the Babe Ruth World Series and

EDUCATION CENTERS
Lake Fort Smith State Park is an
outdoor lover’s dream, offering everything from beautiful scenic views and
trails, to camp sites and recreational
activities. The site encompasses many
elements of the original Lake Fort
Smith State Park, which was constructed during the 1930s by the WPA,
but also features a wealth of modern,
new facilities and amenities-making it
the ultimate nature experience. Visitors
can bike, hike, picnic, set up camp
alongside the 1,400 acre lake, or rent
a canoe and head out on the water for
fishing or a little fun in the sun. Lodging accommodations range from basic
camp sites to secluded cabins, complete with refrigerators, beds and other

meetings rooms, and a group lodge are

Devil’s Den State Park, just a short
drive from Van Buren, is another popular

melds established practices with modern technology to provide sound laws, ordinances
and services for its citizens.

future, Van Buren leaders oversee a number of departments
that provide protection, educational and recreational programs,
and other vital services to the
community. Residents elect a
mayor and city council to oversee city affairs and effectively
direct operations on their behalf.

Van Buren city government
addresses those critical services
that only local government can
provide such as fire and police
protection, streets and drainage,
and water and sewer services.
Departments and divisions
include Engineering, Streets,
Municipal Utilities, Planning and
Development, Property Maintenance, Municipal Auditorium,
Parks and Recreation, as well as
other public services including
the fire and police departments.
Citizens have demonstrated
their commitment to progress
over the last decade, choosing
to invest millions of dollars into
constructing state-of-the-art
facilities. Through temporary tax
measures, the city has opened
a new Van Buren Public Library,
a new fire station to serve the
ever-growing north side of town
and a just completed new police
headquarters.
Construction is currently underway on a vibrant Senior
Center that will serve as a social,
nutritional and recreational resource for the town’s maturing
population.
Public safety and preparedness
is at the heart of local government as Van Buren proudly
unveiled its newest fire station
in 2014. Located on Northridge
Drive, the facility and its crew will
provide the northern most area
of town with proper fire protection. Station # 4 also includes
a new pumper truck which
features the latest in fire safety
equipment. Maintaining adequate
facilities and well-trained fire firefighters city-wide is a top priority
for leaders.
