Program Notes
ArgentiniancomposerCarlosGuastavino(1922-)hascomposedtwohundredsongsinspiredbythe
dancerhythmsandfolksongsofArgentina.Hissongsarefullofnatureimagesincludingdoves,
flowers,water,andmountains.Anexcellentpianist,Guastavinospentyearsaccompanyingsingersin
voicelessonsandlearninghowtocomposesongsthatwoulddrawupontheirvocalstrengths.There
isalyricalnaturetohiscompositionalstyleasevidencedin“Larosayelsauce”andthevocalduet,
“Pueblitomipueblo,”bothbasedonthepoetryofFranciscoSilva.
ClaudioSantoro(1919-1989),Braziliancomposer,conductor,andeducator,wastrainedasapianist
andviolinist.HelaterstudiedwithNadiaBoulangerinParisandbecameapopularmusiceducatorin
Germany.“Acalantodarosa”fromhissongcycleCançoesdeAmor,1stserieswascomposedinRio
deJaneiro,1958.LyricistViniciusdeMoreaes,alsolyricistof“TheGirlfromIpanema”,wrotethetext
tobothseriesofCançoesdeAmor.Amoremlágrimas,composedin1957,isthethirdsongfrom
Santoro’ssongcycleentitledTrêsCançõesPopulareswithtextalsobydeMoreaes.
ThetraditionalAfro-Brazilianlullaby"Nigue-Nigue-Ninhas,”arrangedbytheBrazilianconductorand
composerFranciscoErnaniBraga(1868-1945),isfromasetoffivesongsentitledCancióndecuna
afro-brasileña,whicharelongerinprint.SincethetextisamixtureofPortugueseandanAfrican
dialect,itisdifficulttofindanexacttranslation.BragaspenttimeinEuropestudyingcomposition
withMassenetandothers,however,hereturnedtoBrazilin1890.Hehadalargeinfluenceonthe
musicalsceneinRiodeJaneiroandSãnPaulo,andtaughtcompositionattheNationalInstituteof
MusicinRiodeJaneirowhileconductingandcomposing.
Thethirty-sixartsongsofColombiancomposer,conductor,andpianistJaimeLeón(1921-2015)have
beenreceivingmoreattentionrecentlybyperformersandscholars.MusicologistandSopranoDr.
PatriciaCaicedohaspublishedtwovolumesofhissongsprovidingtranslationsandIPA.Bothsongs-“Pequeñapequeñita”and“Viaje”--canbefoundinthesecondcollectionandwerecomposedtothe
textofFranciscoDelgadoSantos.LeónstudiedcompositionatJulliardunderVittorioGianniniand
BernardWagenaar.
Composer,pianist,cellistandsingerMontserratCampmany(1901-1990)wasborninBarcelona
althoughherfamilymovedtoArgentinasoonafterwards.ShereturnedtoBarcelonain1929after
receivinghermusiceducationattheConservatoryinBuenosAiresandbecomingarenowned
composer.ShespentmanyyearscollaboratingwithmusiciansintheBarcelona‘scene’.Duetothe
SpanishCivilWar(1936-1939)shewentbacktoBuenosAires,wheresheliveduntilherdeath.“Canto
deAmor”,withtextbyAgustinDentone,wascomposedin1954andpartofasetoffivesongs
depictingalesstraditionalapproachtoharmony.
“ElVito”isaSpanishdancethatwastypicallyperformedontabletopsinatavern,andthissongis
oneofmanytranscriptionsofapopularsongheardinMadridintheearly1800’s.Fernando
Obradors,borninBarcelona,wasknownforhistunefulneo-classicalsongsbaseduponSpanishdance
rhythmsandvocaldisplay.HissongcollectionsCancionesclásicasespañolasarepublishedbyUnion
MusicalEspañolaandareamonghisbest-knownworks.
UruguaycomposerandviolinistEduardoFabini(1882-1950)wasoneofseveralUruguayan
composersusingmorenationalistictrendsintheircompositionsduringtheearly20thcentury.He
studiedcompositionattheBrusselsConservatoireunderAdolfodeBoeckaswellasothers.Fabini
composedfoursettingsentitledTriste.No.4,composedin1930,featuresthevoicewithorchestra
withlyricsbyElíasRegulesUriarte(1861-1929).
AlthoughbestknownforhispianocompositionGoyescas(1911),EnriqueGranados(1867-1916)
composednumeroussongsandanoperaentitledGoyescasin1916,whichhadasuccessfulpremiere
inAmericawiththecomposerpresent.“LaMajaDolorosa”and“ElMirardelaMaja”aresongsfrom
hislargerworkentitledColecciódeTonadillas,composedbetween1896and1900andsettotextby
FernandoPeriquet.AlthoughbornaCatalan(Barcelona),Granadoswroteveryfewofhissongsinhis
nativetongue.HeidentifiedmorewithMadrid,andhissongsreflectthepopularSpanishstyleof
imitatingtheguitarinthepianoaccompanimentbyuseofarpeggiatedandquicklyrepeatedchords,
providingsupportforthevoicetoexecuterapidmelismaticpassages.
LacerdoOsvaldo(1927-2011)wasaBraziliannationalistcomposerandpianistwhostudied
compositionwithCamargoGuarnieriinSaõPaulo.Hefeltstronglythathismusicshouldreflectthe
ethnicmusicalcharacteristicsfoundinfolkmusic,asevidencedbyhisuseoftheBrazilian
northeasternmixolydianmodefeaturingaraised4thscaletone.HewasthefirstBraziliancomposer
towinaGuggenheimFellowshiptostudyinAmerica.HestudiedcompositionwithAmerican
composers,AaronCoplandandVittorioGianniniin1963.Osvaldoisbestknownforhischoraland
organmusic,althoughhecomposedinallmusicalgenres.ThevocalduetFugaSaudosawas
composedin1993,usingthefirststanzaofapoembyBrazilianpoetBastosTigre(1882-1957).(The
performersareindebtedtoOsvaldo’swidow,EudóxiadeBarros,Brazilianconcertpianist,forher
permissiontorecordthisselection.)
CatalancomposerJaumePahissa(1880-1969)spentmanyyearsinBarcelonateachingcomposition
andconductingattheEscuelaMunicipaldeMúsicauntilleavingforArgentinain1937duringthe
SpanishWar.Heisknownforseveraloperasandnumeroussongs,whichexperimentedwith
polytonalityandtwelve-tonetechniques,yetinfusinghispersonalexpressivenessbasedonSpanish
culture’sfolksonginfluences.HestudiedunderanothergreatSpanishcomposer,EnricMorera,who
wasamentorformanycomposersearlyinthe20thcentury.“Rosa”isoneofhislessmusically
sophisticatedsongsandsettohistext.Thesongisametaphorforsomeonewhoinvestsdearlyina
relationshipbutknowsthatifitisunrequited,theywillneedtowalkaway.
CatalanviolinistandcomposerEduardoToldrá(1895-1962)composedequallywellforvoice,opera,
andorchestra.HissongsarecherishedamongsingersfortheirromanticflavormergedwithFrench
impressionism.Unlikeseveralofhiscolleagues,heremainedinBarcelonaduringtheSpanishwar.
HissongscultivatetheCatalanlanguageintoamusicallanguageresultinginhisreputationforbeinga
‘renaissance’Catalancomposerinfluencedbynationalism.HewasloyaltoCatalanpoetsandset
textsbyJosepCarner--“CançoIncerta”,JoanMaragall—“RomançaSenseParaules”,JosepMariade
Sagarra—“RomançdeSantaLlucia”tomentionafew.
ThemusicofCatalancomposerManuelBlancafort(1897-1987)waspartlyinfluencedbytheFrench
composers‘LesSix’,whilereflectingablendofCatalannationalismandneo-classicism.Hismost
significantrepertoirewascomposedforthepianoandorchestra,althoughhecomposednumerous
songs,whichunfortunatelywereoftencomparedtothoseofhisfriendandcolleaguecomposer
FedericoMompou.HestudiedwithLamotedeGrignon,amentorformanySpanishcomposersinthe
early20thcenturywhilelivinginSpain.“CançodeL’únicCami”utilizestextbyCatalanpoetTomàs

“CançóDeLaFira”and“Damuntdetunoméslesflors”
areperfectexamplesofsongsreflectingthediversecompositionaltalentofCatalancomposer
FedericoMompou(1893-1987).HewashalfFrenchandhalfCatalanandhismusicreflectsinfluences
frombothmusicalstyles.Histhirty-sevensongsarearguablyhisbestworks,andexhibithiscomfort
incomposinginsmallerforms.Mompouwasattractedtopoetryofasombernatureasseeninhis
song“Damuntdetunoméslesflors”fromalargerworkentitledCombatdelsomnicomposedin
1949,textbyJosepJanés.Trainedtobeaconcertpianist,hestudiedpianoinParisandhas
composednumerousselectionsforpianoaswellasorchestralcompositions.“CançóDeLaFira”-composedin1949--wassettotextbyTomásGarcésandpublishedasasinglesong.
ThemusicofBraziliancomposerHeitorVilla-Lobos(1887-1959)isknownforitscharacteristic
nationalism,drivingrhythms,andoriginalinstrumentation.Hewastrainedatayoungagetoplaythe
cello,viola,andguitarandalthoughheintendedtobecomeadoctor,hefoundhimselfperforming
regularlywithlocalpopularmusiciansineveningvenues,experimentingwithvariousmusicalstyles.
Largelyself-taught,hespentseveralyearscomposingandplayingfreelancecelloincafesandcinemas
toearnaliving.Aftergainingsuccesswithseveralorchestralworks,hetravelledtoPariswherehe
continuedtohavesuccessasacomposer.WhenreturningtoBrazil,hebecameamemberofagroup
ofartistsknownastheNewNationalistRegime.In1945,hefoundedtheBrazilianAcademyofMusic
andwouldspendhislateryearstravellingbetweenNewYork,ParisandBrazil.Cançãodeamoris
oneoffivesongsfromVilla-Lobos’workentitledCançõesdaflorestadoAmazonapublishedin1958
andscoredforvoiceandorchestrawithtextbyDoraVasoncelos.Themusicforthissuitewas
originallywrittenaspartofamoviescorefromGreenMansions,fromwhichthecomposerextracted
foursongs.
JaymeOvalle(1894-1955)wasaBraziliancomposer,poetanddiplomatlaterresidingmostlyinNew
YorkandLondon.HeisbestknownforthesongAzulão(bluebird)settotextbyManuelBandeira,a
poetpopularamongBraziliancomposers.Hehaswrittensymphonicandpianocompositionsaswell.
