If so, you are sure to enjoy the challenge of the 26th Annual Road Rally! Grab your neighbors and friends to create a team of six adults per vehicle. This exciting, and somewhat physically challenging, four-hour scavenger hunt on wheels will test your mind, body, and teamwork, so put on your thinking caps and start your engines! At the completion of the rally, teams will gather for an awards presentation and socialize at a pizza dinner. This fun-filled event is a cooperative effort of the Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville and Woodridge Park Districts, so space is limited. The game is very safe and is played with a soft bat and ball so no glove is needed. Each player bats once an inning and no scores are kept. Blast Ball consists of one base and makes a ‘honking ‘ noise when a player steps on it. Major League Baseball recognizes Blast Ball as part of its campaign to promote the resurgence of baseball. Kids love it so come on out. This is a cooperative program with the Lisle Park District. Megan has led the Public Relations & Marketing department since 2007. In those three years her department launched a new on-line registration system and created a new website. She has established a strong online presence for the park district through an electronic monthly newsletter and Facebook pages for the district and for Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park. She has also created innovative marketing plans for Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park, including designing new signage and direct mail marketing pieces. “Megan’s creativity, professionalism, and enthusiasm for her work has projected the positive image of the Park District and has made her a tremendous asset to the organization,” stated Mike Adams, Executive Director of Woodridge Park District. 50 www.woodridgeparks.org New ADA Plan to Address Accessibility Barriers within the Park District The Woodridge Park District Board of Commissioners approved a new plan to make Woodridge parks more accessible for those with disabilities at the September board meeting. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires state and local governments to develop a transition plan, as a result, the Park District hired Accessibility Consultants and Training Services to update the district’s original ADA Transition Plan, which was created in 1992. The plan assesses all Park District properties and identifies any accessibility barriers that exist. The following is a summary of the Woodridge Park District ADA Transition Plan: • Identifies the physical obstacles and reference that limit the accessibility of the park district programs, services, or activities to people with disabilities • Describes the methods to be used to make the facilities accessible • Provides a schedule for making the access modifications • Provides a yearly schedule for making the modifications if the transition plan is more than one year long • Indicates the public official responsible for the implementation of the transition plan. Because the ADA only requires there to be at least one minimum accessible route per facility, not every accessibility barrier identified will be made accessible, though full accessibility is a long term goal to strive for taking into account future available funds. The District will initially focus on removing barriers at the most frequently visited park sites and facilities. Additionally, the Act does not mandate when removal of barriers must be done, therefore the District is prioritizing the most obvious barriers and scheduling removal to coincide with the next scheduled replacement date. Accessibility Consultation and Training Services consultant Mark Trieglaff told board members at the September board meeting that although there is a lot of work to be done, the parks within the district are in good shape. He specifically mentioned Forest Glen Park as a model for accessible parks which has received a great deal of recognition as being one of the best accessible parks in the country. The Woodridge Park District ADA Transition Plan is available on the park district’s website, www.woodridgeparks.org. Woodridge Park District Recognized for Green Efforts The Woodridge Park District recently earned the Earth Flag award in recognition of the district’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The Glen Ellyn- based conservation group SCARCE (Schools and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) created the Earth Flag award to recognize public entities that show a commitment to making eco-friendly choices and to educating employees and the public about reducing waste, recycling, and conserving resources. The Earth Flag was presented to the district at the Woodridge Park District’s October board meeting. Earning the Earth flag was a five-step certification process which included sponsoring a community conservation event. This April, the Woodridge Park District’s green team “Green Guides” hosted a gardening seminar and organized a rain barrel sale to help residents conserve water and save money on water bills. The park district also coordinated the annual “Clean Up the Parks Day” to help beautify Woodridge parks and natural areas and help keep waterways clean. Earning the Earth Flag is just one way to publicly recognize the district’s commitment to being a community leader in conservation and recycling programs and education. For more information about the park district’s green efforts visit the “Go Green” with the Park District website page at www.woodridgeparks.org. The Park District is now sponsoring a program specifically targeting arson prevention through the new Arson Tipster Award Program. The Arson Tipster Program rewards residents for providing information that leads to the arrest of the arson perpetrator or conspirator. All communication between the Woodridge Park District and the Arson Tipster is kept strictly confidential. The Woodridge Park District will not release or disclose any information furnished by the Arson Tipster without the Tipster’s explicit consent and approval. Arson Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward. To provide a tip or get more information about the Arson Tipster Program, contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300. Thank you for helping keep our parks safe and clean. Waterfowl Concerns Regular feeding of waterfowl can cause dependency on people for food, bird and people conflicts, and the spread of disease. Please refrain from feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high. The less nutritious handouts and harsh weather increase their susceptibility to life threatening diseases. We ask that you please do not feed the waterfowl. Thank you for your support. For more information, please contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300. Memorial Tree Program The Woodridge Park District Memorial Tree program provides residents the opportunity to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or to honor a special occasion. Your participation in the Memorial Tree program will not only provide a lasting memory, but will also help to beautify our parks and trails. In addition to the tree, a bronze plaque is available and may include the name of the tree, year of dedication, name of person the memorial is for and a brief personalized message. A Park District staff member will assist in locating the site, choosing the tree, and selecting the wording for the plaque. Planting of the tree can be completed in the spring before May 15 or in the fall before October 15. For more information, contact Ryan Bordewick, Planner and Landscape Designer, at (630) 353-3300. Garden Plots Garden plots are provided for those who wish to have a garden but do not have the space. These garden sites are located on the tract of land east of Woodridge Drive and south of 71st Street. The plots will be plowed, rototilled, and sectioned off into 20’ x 30’ areas. Only one plot per family is allowed and they are assigned on first come first serve basis. Register in person to pick out a garden plot number. Gardeners will provide their own seeds and equipment and must maintain their plots only. Gardeners must put up a fence around their garden plot. All plants, stakes, fences and supports must be removed from the plot area by October 17, 2011.
