Road Rally
Looking for an adventure? If so, you are sure to enjoy the challenge of
the 26th Annual Road Rally! Grab your neighbors and friends to create
a team of six adults per vehicle. Each group is given a map and a bag of
clues, but only teamwork, logic, and luck will keep you on track. Some
clues are helpful while others are designed to throw you off course.
This exciting, and somewhat physically challenging, four-hour
scavenger hunt on wheels will test your mind, body, and teamwork, so
put on your thinking caps and start your engines! At the completion of
the rally, teams will gather for an awards presentation and socialize at a
pizza dinner. This fun-filled event is a cooperative effort of the
Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville and Woodridge Park
Districts, so space is limited. Letters will be e-mailed to each team
captain around the second week of April. Please provide a valid email
address when registering.
Registration Deadline: Friday, April 15.

New! Discover the Stars
Disney on Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” - on ice! The
performance will not only include memorable moments from summer’s
hit movie, Toy Story 3, it will also include scenes from Toy Story 1 and 2.
Join the Toy Story gang, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, Ken and Lots-o’Huggin Bear as they escape from the tots of Sunnyside Daycare and race

Woody’s Roundup are just a couple of the great scenes that will help you
rediscover the humor, friendship and charm of Toy Story. The show will
begin at 11:30 am. The Bus will depart from the CC at 9:30 am. Tickets
are in the 100 Level at the United Center in Chicago. Children must be

Creative Movement
Dance Kids USA presents a specially designed program to encourage
your child in dance, mime, creative movement, music education,
ballet, jazz, tap, gymnastics and performance. Your child will gain
confidence, rhythm, better coordination and balance; all while
exercising his or her memory and having fun. There is no specific
dress code; however, we find that girls enjoy leotards and tights and
boys prefer active playwear (t-shirt and shorts).

Your child will love our program, which emphasizes the ‘FUN’damentals of learning. Emphasis is placed
on the whole development of early childhood learning with focus on cognitive, social-emotional, and

of activities such as math skills, science, reading readiness, shapes, colors, music, art, motor development
and free play. Peer group interaction is stressed, as it is essential for children. The Totschool program
operates in accordance with most of the School District 68 schedule, and begins in September 2011 and runs
through May 2012. For health and sanitary reasons, all participants MUST BE TOILET TRAINED AND
OUT OF DIAPERS AND PULL UPS.

New! Build your Interviewing Skills
With unemployment rates nearing 10%, it’s an employers market out
there. Many people lose employment opportunities due to poor
interviewing skills. Others never even get an interview due to poorly
written resumes that are put at the bottom of the stack.
By attending this workshop you will learn:
1) Key points that can make your resume stand out from all the others
2) How to prepare for in-person and telephone interviews in order to
make a memorable impression
3) Speaking with confidence - how to sell yourself and ‘connect’
during the interview
4) How to respond to tough questions about your previous
employment in a positive way
5) The top 3 things you must accomplish during the first interview to
get to the next level
Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their current resume.
This program is a cooperative effort of the Park Districts of Darien, Lisle
and Woodridge.
Class content includes walking (heeling) without pulling, sit, down,
stand, coming when called, name response, off from food in your hand,
jumping on people, stay and being a vet-friendly dog. Voice, as well as
hand signals, will be taught for most commands. Topics that will be
covered are house training, cage training, barking, digging, bite
inhibition, and being a good leader. This class is a must for all dog
owners who desire a well-mannered dog. Dogs must be at least 4
months of age to attend class. Older dogs also benefit from training,
and there is no truth to the saying that you can’t teach an old dog new
tricks! Participants may purchase optional standard dog training
collars and leads at the first class. No dogs are allowed at the first class.
Please bring a photocopy of your dog’s vaccination records to the first
orientation class.

New! Dog Walking
LOCATION: Lisle Park District, Meadows Center, 5801 Westview Lane, Lisle
Walk your dog, do not let your dog walk you. Learn to get a better
walking dog in real life situations. Other dogs will be there to act as
distractions for you and your dog. Work on getting your dog to focus
on you and not the other dogs. Learn what to do to get the focus back
on you. We will handle situations as they arise in the real world. Since
we will be in a public park this is not the place for an aggressive dog.
We will also not be socializing with the public as this is a working
session. The equipment your dog wears must be safe. It can be a collar
(cloth or leather), a harness (regular or easy walk) or a gentle leader
(snoot loop or halti). No choke chains, prong collars or shock collars.
Please make sure whichever you use is secure and the dog can not slip
out of it. Please bring them on a regular 6 foot leather or cloth leash, no
retractable. Please bring good treats with you. This class is not suitable
for children under the age of 12.

Mother/Daughter: Mom’s Spa Time
New! Cooking Wholesome Meals
This unique night is honoring Mother’s Day by mom’s spending special
time with their daughter(s) and getting the spa brought to them. The
twist is that the pampering is done by the daughters! Each mom will
have a facial, pedicure and manicure given by their daughter team
member. They will be treated to an avocado mask, a crystal bracelet is
made for them, a full pedicure with polish application and manicure
complete with nail decals and glitter touches. A complimentary spa bag
is given to each mom. This is a cooperative program with the Lisle Park
District.
Gain a better understanding of how to cook wholesome meals as a
family and show ways to help us with family members that have health
conditions. Getting the kids involved will help them later in life in
making good food choices and preparing them for a healthier lifestyle.
Please bring an appetite, a pen, note pad, measuring spoons/cups and a
wooden spoon to class. This is a cooperative program with the Darien
Park District.

Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Style of combining the hands and feet in a
method of unarmed self-defense. Instruction is centered around
physical conditioning, a series of patterned movements that develop
grace and coordination, and controlled sparring and self-defense
practice. Black Belt instructors teach proper technique in these areas,
monitor all students practice, and provide a structured teaching
environment for students of all ages. Tae Kwon Do can bring out a
heightened sense of confidence, physical awareness, and well-being in
each and every student. All students begin at the rank of white belt.
To advance to a higher belt or rank, the student must demonstrate his
or her abilities at periodic promotional examination held at Kim’s
Black Belt Academy. Note: Uniforms are available through the
instructor.

Blast Ball is an introduction to baseball for young kids. The game is
very safe and is played with a soft bat and ball so no glove is needed.
Each player bats once an inning and no scores are kept. Blast Ball
consists of one base and makes a ‘honking ‘ noise when a player steps
on it. Major League Baseball recognizes Blast Ball as part of its
campaign to promote the resurgence of baseball. Kids love it so come

The Woodridge Park District recognizes the importance of
volunteer coaches in our athletic programs. Coaching youth
sports is more than just teaching the X’s and the O’s. Good
Sportsmanship, a positive attitude and self discipline are
expected by parents and nowadays expectations couldn’t be
higher. We would like to recognize the efforts of some of our
coaches and so we are looking for nominations.
Any coach who has coached in the 2010 calendar year is eligible
to be nominated. This coach should have demonstrated at
minimum the following qualities:
•
Good sportsmanship: Are players encouraged to be
respectful of opponents? Does the coach place the well being
of his/her players ahead of winning? Does the coach practice
what he/she preaches?
• Player Development: Are players motivated to come to
practice and learn? Does the coach create an environment
that is fun and challenging for all players?

Recognized by Village of Woodridge
Megan Pettit, Public Relations & Marketing Manager for the Woodridge Park District,

Megan has led the Public Relations & Marketing department since 2007. In those three
years her department launched a new on-line registration system and created a new

electronic monthly newsletter and Facebook pages for the district and for Cypress Cove
Family Aquatic Park. She has also created innovative marketing plans for Cypress Cove
Family Aquatic Park, including designing new signage and direct mail marketing pieces.
“Megan’s creativity, professionalism, and enthusiasm for her work has projected
the positive image of the Park District and has made her a tremendous asset to the

New ADA Plan to Address Accessibility Barriers
within the Park District
The Woodridge Park District Board of Commissioners approved a new plan to make Woodridge parks more accessible for those with
disabilities at the September board meeting. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires state and local governments to
develop a transition plan, as a result, the Park District hired Accessibility Consultants and Training Services to update the district’s
original ADA Transition Plan, which was created in 1992. The plan assesses all Park District properties and identifies any accessibility barriers that exist.
The following is a summary of the Woodridge Park District ADA Transition Plan:
• Identifies the physical obstacles and reference that limit the accessibility of the park district programs, services, or activities to people with disabilities
• Describes the methods to be used to make the facilities accessible
• Provides a schedule for making the access modifications
• Provides a yearly schedule for making the modifications if the transition plan is more than one year long
• Indicates the public official responsible for the implementation of the transition plan.
Because the ADA only requires there to be at least one minimum accessible route per facility, not every accessibility barrier identified
will be made accessible, though full accessibility is a long term goal to strive for taking into account future available funds. The
District will initially focus on removing barriers at the most frequently visited park sites and facilities. Additionally, the Act does not
mandate when removal of barriers must be done, therefore the District is prioritizing the most obvious barriers and scheduling
removal to coincide with the next scheduled replacement date.
Accessibility Consultation and Training Services consultant Mark Trieglaff told board members at the September board meeting that
although there is a lot of work to be done, the parks within the district are in good shape. He specifically mentioned Forest Glen Park
as a model for accessible parks which has received a great deal of recognition as being one of the best accessible parks in the country.
The Woodridge Park District ADA Transition Plan is available on the park district’s website, www.woodridgeparks.org.
Woodridge Park District Recognized for Green Efforts
The Woodridge Park District recently earned the Earth Flag award in recognition of the district’s commitment to environmental
stewardship. The Glen Ellyn- based conservation group SCARCE (Schools and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting
Education) created the Earth Flag award to recognize public entities that show a commitment to making eco-friendly choices and to
educating employees and the public about reducing waste, recycling, and conserving resources.
The Earth Flag was presented to the district at the Woodridge Park District’s October board meeting. Earning the Earth flag was a
five-step certification process which included sponsoring
a community conservation event. This April, the
Woodridge Park District’s green team “Green Guides”
hosted a gardening seminar and organized a rain barrel
sale to help residents conserve water and save money on
water bills. The park district also coordinated the annual
“Clean Up the Parks Day” to help beautify Woodridge
parks and natural areas and help keep waterways clean.
Earning the Earth Flag is just one way to publicly
recognize the district’s commitment to being a
community leader in conservation and recycling
programs and education. For more information about the
park district’s green efforts visit the “Go Green” with the
Park District website page at www.woodridgeparks.org.

Program, contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300.
Thank you for helping keep our parks safe and clean.
Waterfowl Concerns
Regular feeding of waterfowl can cause dependency on people for food,
bird and people conflicts, and the spread of disease. Please refrain from
feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other
lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no
longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become
tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to
traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of
waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high.
The less nutritious handouts and harsh weather increase their susceptibility to life threatening diseases. We ask that you please do not feed
the waterfowl. Thank you for your support. For more information,
please contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300.
Memorial Tree Program
The Woodridge Park District Memorial Tree program provides
residents the opportunity to purchase a tree in memory of a loved
one or to honor a special occasion. Your participation in the Memorial
Tree program will not only provide a lasting memory, but will also help
to beautify our parks and trails. In addition to the tree, a bronze plaque
is available and may include the name of the tree, year of dedication,
name of person the memorial is for and a brief personalized message. A Park District staff member will assist in locating the site, choosing
the tree, and selecting the wording for the plaque. Planting of the tree
can be completed in the spring before May 15 or in the fall before
October 15. For more information, contact Ryan Bordewick, Planner
and Landscape Designer, at (630) 353-3300.
Garden Plots
Garden plots are provided for those who wish to have a garden but do
not have the space. These garden sites are located on the tract of land
east of Woodridge Drive and south of 71st Street. The plots will be
plowed, rototilled, and sectioned off into 20’ x 30’ areas. Only one plot
per family is allowed and they are assigned on first come first serve
basis. Register in person to pick out a garden plot number. Gardeners
will provide their own seeds and equipment and must maintain their
plots only. Gardeners must put up a fence around their garden plot. All
plants, stakes, fences and supports must be removed from the plot area
by October 17, 2011.

Behavior Policy
Satisfaction Guaranteed and Refund Procedure
The Woodridge Park District offers a “Satisfaction
Guaranteed” Policy for all of our recreation programs! (Trips,
Pool Passes Summer day camps, and One-Day Events
excluded). We are committed to giving the residents of
Woodridge quality programs at reasonable prices, and we are
prepared to stand behind the programs we offer. If you are not
completely satisfied with the program after attending two
classes, stop by the Community Center before the third
meeting to fill out an “unsatisfied” refund form. We will invite
you to repeat a class at no charge, receive a credit toward
another program in the session, or receive a full refund
(minus $5 administrative charge).
No refund will be granted after the third meeting of the
program or after 50% of the classes have been held (whichever
is earlier) with the exception of a written medical excuse prior
to completion of the program. A $5 administrative charge will
be deducted from the amount of refund for each program,
including refunds for medical reasons. Medical excuses will
result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes
held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. No
refunds will be given for a trip unless there is a replacement
participant or the trip is cancelled. The Park District does
reserve the right to cancel a program if the enrollment is not
sufficient to justify sponsorship of the activity. Participants will
receive a phone call and the option of a refund or leaving the
balance on their account. We ask for your feedback to help us
serve our residents to the best of our ability and to achieve our
goal to make this the most cooperative, public accessible park
district in the state.
Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times.
The following guidelines have been developed to help make Park
District programs safe and enjoyable for all participants. Additional
rules may be developed for particular programs and athletic leagues as
deemed necessary by staff.
Participants shall:
1.Show respect to all participants and staff, take direction from staff.
2.Refrain from using abusive or foul language.
3.Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants, or staff.

The Rotary Club of Woodridge acknowledges the need for residents
