W hat you are about to read may be the most important information you’ve ever read. Here is why. Albert Einstein was, quite possibly, the most intelligent person who ever lived. His theories and ideas were so far ahead of his time, that even now, the smartest scientists alive are still discovering his value. The Body Can Recover From Almost Anything! With the correct equipment, properly used, low level lasers have been clinically shown to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, increase cellular energy, increase cell permeability (so that the nutrients the cell needs to heal can get into the cell) and even help correct faulty DNA!* One of his theories published in 1917, worked out the theory of how lasers function. However, it was not until May 16, 1960 (43 years later) that the first actual laser was developed by an American scientist. Since then, scientists and inventors have developed many types of lasers and all kinds of uses for them. They can be used as a scalpel that is so delicate, it can be used on the eyes of human beings. Lasers are used to read price codes at your local supermarkets. And they’re used to play music and video on your CD’s and DVD’s. But now, there is a new type of laser so effective against human disease and injury that it is rapidly changing the practice of medicine. This is a new type of low-level laser which produces an unfocused light that has been... Registered With The FDA To Be 100% Safe! Call 1-800-303-6923. Low-level lasers use less than one watt of power and they produce what can best be described as a “Healing Light”. Here is a somewhat un-scientific description of how this “Healing Light” can potentially help reverse the damage done by human sickness and disease. As you probably know, our entire bodies are made up of cells. The health of all human cells is based on energy. If your cells don’t receive enough energy, they will weaken and the body will become sick. For you to be healthy, what your cells need is exactly the right kind and the right amount of energy. Every time you get injured or become sick, the energy flow to your cells is disrupted. Until the proper type and amount of energy is restored, you will remain sick or injured. That’s what a low-level laser device does. It re-energizes the cells in your body with the right kind and proper amount of healing energy. It may surprise you to learn that low level lasers are Used By Doctors To Heal Their Patients In The Fastest Way Possible! Could you guess what kind of doctors use the highest percent of low-level lasers on their patients? It’s doctors involved in sports medicine. Why? The answer is simple. You see, doctors involved in sports medicine often have to get their patients better in the fastest way humanly possible because every day he remains “unhealthy” can cost the sports organization millions of dollars. december13 What you have just read is a very simplistic (almost childish) explanation of low-level laser therapy, of how it works, and what it can do for you. But this is something that needs to be explained to you much more accurately by a real expert. Professional Results In a Small, Easy to Use Package! Call 1-800-303-6923, Code 1051 For Your FREE Information Report. But here’s something exciting! You don’t actually need to go to a doctor to get laser therapy. If you want to you can buy one of these devices and use it on yourself. The best ones come with simple, easy-to-follow instructions and can be used by almost any person with average intelligence. Perhaps the best low-level lasers in the world have been invented by a doctor named Larry Lytle. He has studied lasers and human health for years, and Dr. Lytle is, without question, one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about low-level lasers... and... how they can be used... To Help Almost Every Health Problem Ever Experienced By A Human Being! Dr. Lytle believes (as do many other people) low-level laser therapy will become the medicine of the future. If you hold a low-level laser device against the skin of your body and turn it on, you will be able to see the laser light... but... you will not be able to feel it. There probably won’t even be a sensation of warmth. Laser light is as gentle as the kiss of a butterfly. But, from a healing point of view, it is quite possible it is more effective than drugs or surgery. Low-level laser therapy is not just the medicine of the future. For many people who know about it, it is the “medicine” they use now. The problem of trying to explain the healing powers of low-level laser therapy is... It Works So Well On So Many Different Problems, It Seems Like It Couldn’t Possibly Be True! But it is true! As mentioned earlier, all injury and illness creates an interruption of energy to the cells of the human body. The body will never recover until the proper amount and type of energy is restored to these cells. But once that energy is restored... This is information which just might help relieve you of any disease and might possibly save your life and the life of your loved ones. And best of all, you can Get This Information Absolutely FREE! Dr. Larry Lytle himself has written and compiled a FREE REPORT in which he explains to you exactly how and why low-level laser therapy works. Dr. Lytle will show you some unbelievable “before” and “after” pictures of people who have benefitted by this amazing new therapy. For some people, a free report and information like this can mark the beginning of an entirely new life... pain-free and full of energy. For others, it can make the difference of living a healthy life compared to a low-energy life of sickness and disease. And, for those who live with enormous pain every day ... this free report could truly guide them to a miracle! But even if you are not sick, not injured, or not in pain, you should still order this report. After all, it is 100% free. And almost nobody lives out their life without having at least some kind of sickness or injury. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that, if you do become sick or injured, you will at least know where to go to find some sort of answer to your problems that don’t involve dangerous drugs! Call 1-800-303-6923 ...after you are connected, at the prompt, press the code number - 1051 - into your keypad then leave your name and mailing information. So began my article last December when I introduced The Vegas Voice political editor to everyone as my Ladylove. One year later, my feelings are still the same - if not stronger. The year’s journey has been a lot of things - thrilling, exciting, and even surreal. One thing it has not been is boring. For those Vegas Voice readers unfamiliar with my life story, I had the great fortune to spend 35 years with my Amy. We raised four fantastic sons and when she suddenly and unexpectedly died two years ago, I could not imagine nor even comprehend, how there could be any smiles; any laughter - any purpose to my life ever again. Now after a full year of “playing house” with Rana, and unless she is quietly and continuously slipping those “happy pills” in my morning coffee, it appears that I have had the extraordinary good fortune of finding another woman who fills my life with joy. I wish I could tell you some amusing stories of our up & down relationship. But try as I might, I really don’t have any “downs” and it really is no fun to write lovey-dovey tales. I do have a “great” column concerning Rana’s bedroom clothing closet. Unfortunately to Vegas Voice readers, Rana has given me that “smile” and in the gentlest of tones, predicted that if I ever put pen-to-paper, it would be the last column I ever write. Now don’t get me wrong; every day has not been “moonlight and roses.” But all-in-all, I guess when you start a new relationship you learn (or at least I have) “not to sweat the small stuff.” And so long as Rana does not give me a Roberts Rules over whether it was okay to drive 85 miles per hour on an open and empty highway. Thankfully for me, Rana was cool, calm and collected as I started to lose my temper and suggest where the officers can stick their traffic ticket. She even lovingly adhard time during the football season, it’s all vised me that if I did not stop my actions, she small stuff. Yes, it hasn’t been picture-perfect. For ex- would (eventually) pay my bail. It was the ample, despite her best attempts, I still stead- eventual part that got my attention. And a few months ago, I finally introduced fastly refuse to wear those Don Quixote glasses. Rana to my mom and extended family in If she wants to change and improve the world (or even our Sun City Anthem community) she’ll have to do without me – or, in the spirit of compromise, do so while wearing my New York Giants football jersey. As you can imagine, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Truth be told however, I’m still waiting for our first real argument. While I’m sure that there may have been times (erroneously, of course) that Rana was less than thrilled with yours truly, in my world, it cannot be an argument unless I start it. Rana and I have been able to travel the country and survive. For example, we shared a trip to San Francisco this summer when the California police disagreed with yours truly New York. By the way, can you imagine how “strange” it must have been when I brought my girlfriend (who also happens to be a great-grandmother) to meet my mother? The last time I did such a thing I was 15 years old and needed my parents to drive my 12 year old Amy home. Not only did Rana handle it with class and ease, but the family consensus was unanimous - she was much too good for me and I was way out of my league. On the plus side, my four grown up sons lost their respective bets as to when Rana would come to her senses and get rid of me. The over/under was 8 months and yet, we’re still together. I’ll share the story of how lucky I am to have a devoted family for another day, but you get where I’m going. Despite my apparently dysfunctional family, or maybe because of them, and with Rana by my side, I sure do smile a lot more. And for that I am grateful. More importantly, Rana and I, along with our entire Vegas Voice family wish you and yours a very joyous holiday season and a very happy and healthy New Year. Front line rocket launcher (0351 for all you Devil Dogs reading this - OOHRAH!) I remember how I felt that day when my flight to North Carolina was cancelled due to a snowstorm. I was waiting at McCarran having a breakdown! I HAD to say goodbye to my son who was leaving for war, and I couldn’t get there. Didn’t EVERYONE in the world understand that?! I was devastated. But that was nothing compared to the next eight months of a mother’s nightmare. Not knowing exactly where he was, if he was safe, what was happening each moment. I tried so hard not to read the headlines, listen to the news, or read the posts on the Marine parent web site. Each time the telephone or doorbell rang, or a strange car was parked near my house as we drove up, I would go in the bathroom and get physically sick. Becoming friendly with fellow Marine mothers was just as heart-breaking; watching many of them disappear from the forum. We all knew what that meant. I would cry for that family and try not to imagine their grief when they saw two Marines dressed in “Blues” walk up their driveway toward their front door. Then the tears would start falling for my son. I had such a need as a mother to go and hug my son and take the pain away of losing his fellow Marine brothers. Then would come the feeling of relief that my son was still safe - and then the guilt that accompanied that relief. While I will always be proud of him, I will have to learn to deal with the fact that I cannot take away the pain of what he endured, the images he saw, and the brothers he lost. Guest Column What I WILL focus on is helping him get on his feet as a civilian, to be here for him mentally, physically and I’m sure financially. And I’m looking forward to every minute of it! And now as I picked up the phone and heard him say: “We are an hour away Mom.” I knew everything was right with the world again. My boy was home! On Tuesday, November 19th at 9 am.....a UHaul pulled up in front of my house! I cannot describe how I felt at that moment....and I am still flying high! We all are! Running up to that U-Haul and wrapping my arms around my son was a feeling I will never forget. I am complete again. Then it was time for the best treat of all, to surprise my dad, Sam Provda. Andrew was jumping out of his skin to see his Poppy, so we went there almost immediately. (My father and my children are VERY close). Seeing the look on Poppy’s face was priceless and one we will never forget. We can all breathe easy again, knowing that the Las Vegas desert will be the last desert my son will ever live in! This is going to be a very special holiday for my family. I cannot put into words what it was like to hold my son again, but if you take a look at his grandfather’s smile I think it says it all for the whole family. Our holiday prayer for all the military families out there is that they can enjoy the blessing we have received this season and have their sons, daughters, husbands and wives come home safe and sound. And soon too. Karen Confessore along with her dad Sam Provda are residents of Sun City Anthem. It is with deep pride and joy that The Vegas Voice shares her story. 6 www.thevegasvoice.net Wed., Dec. 11, Let’s do it again! All new shows for the holidays! As the holidays come, members of my family converge together. The children; most of them grown, are usually off doing their own thing, but now gather to catch up on who has been doing what. It also stirs up so many wonderful memories of family members who, unfortunately are no longer here with us. In my past, they have always been such an integral part of our holiday traditions. Growing up, it was basically my mother, father and I; although I do have a large family in England and other parts of the world. Here, it was just us three until I married and had children of my own. Once they were grown, my family exploded into extensions that are awesome. But as I sit at my keyboard, I have to reflect on the members of my immediate and extended family that we will all miss. I will miss Angie, a dear friend and my son-in-law’s step mother who loved to cook as much as I do. She always brought the best spicy pasta and cookies. And although my doctor has warned me over and over about eating spicy foods, I could never resist what Angie brought to the table. We lost her to cancer a few years ago. Most of all, I will miss my parents who would have delighted in the photos that will be showing off the new babies. I can just visualize my mother’s face - all red with glee, if I could show her the numerous photos, like the one in this column, of my new greatgrandson, Levi. He will be four months old this Christmas. My father, who had always wanted sons would be over the moon because this crop of babies are ALL boys. My favorite part of the holidays is preparing the food. I’m also sure many of you can share my feeling when I say, the shadow of my mother is always in the kitchen with me at these times. Although my book shelves are loaded with wonderful recipe books, I have a habit of improvising and remembering the way mom used to make things. She never measured, nor do I. It was a handful of this and a pinch of that. How I wish I had paid more attention with some of HER creations though! I remember once she and I had a chicken soup contest and made my dad judge. He told her that hers could never be beaten - it was supreme, and when she smugly walked out of the room, he smiled at me and said mine was best. I never knew which he really enjoyed more. Dad was always the diplomat between us. Such a fibber!(Smile). These days, my girls and I try to carry on the tradition started long ago by our family. We gather close friends (that don’t have their family here) and make them into ours. Then the house overflows with warmth, laughter, memories and so many people we often lose count. This year I can even add publisher Dan’s four sons to our brood. Certainly there are empty spaces from the members of our family who are out of town or too far away to have joined us, but the chant is always, maybe next year - especially Levi and his mother and father. As the family continues to expand, I can only imagine what it would be like if one year we are able to gather everyone together. I think we would need a catering hall, but what fun that would be - especially when you think we started with just three. She can be reached at: [email protected]. Helping Our Furry Friends The days and nights are getting cold now and our “fur babies” are really beginning to feel it. Can all animal lovers (and even those who are not) please help by checking your closets for any old blankets or towels you have that you would be willing to donate to the NSPCA? Perhaps you even have an old dog bed (or two) in your garage that you might have forgotten about? The NSPCA is a no-kill shelter and takes wonderful care of lost, abandoned and sometimes “dumped” pets, but their funds only go so far. Their runs are not heated and the concrete floors are cold and hard. Anything you can do to help would be sincerely appreciated. 8 The Sun City Anthem Pet Club is fortunate to have a lady by the name of Denise Bianca who will even pick up your donation if you cannot drop it off. Her e-mail address is: [email protected]. The NSPCA is located at 4800 W. In 2010, the Windermere offices were recognized as having the highest average sales price in Las Vegas As the owner and manager of the senior move management and professional organizing company Smooth Transitions, Fields wanted to create a one-stop-shop for seniors on the move. “With my background and experience in real estate and property management, it made perfect sense to add local residential real estate services to the Smooth Transitions menu of services. As a full service move management company, the entire moving process, from organizing and downsizing to december13 packing and home staging, to buying and selling of the home can be managed under one roof, so to speak,” said Fields. “We offer a unique and personalized approach to each client’s relocation. We can manage in-state and out-of-state departure and destinations too!” According to Fields, expanding her company’s services was all about finding the right brokerage. “I’m very happy with my choice to join the Windermere team of experts. Broker, Di Redman, is great to work with and her reputation is top notched. Smooth Transitions couldn’t be in a better position to give its clients a truly smooth transition.” Prior to joining the Anthem Hills office, Fields served as an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Premier Realty in Henderson. Francine Fields Keeping It Smooth Make the Most of Holiday Reorganizing It’s the most wonderful time of the year… but as the holiday season approaches, it can feel like there’s simply too much to do. From re-organizing and decorating, to entertaining and gifting, it can be hard to maint a i n y o u r sanity! As we usually end up doing s o m e type of re-organizing in our homes during the holidays, it is the perfect time to maximize results. But you may ask, “How can I bring my current state of domestic chaos into holiday readiness?” The answer lies in the Countdown Organizing Plan. Break your de-cluttering, cleaning, and holiday organizing chores into small, daily bites. Each day your Countdown Organizing Plan assigns a cleaning-and-organizing focus for a room or area in your home, along with a short list of holiday planning chores. By combining holiday prep, home organizing, and cleaning components you’ll learn to STOP clutter, and clean and organize each area in your home. You can begin with an assessment of the State of the Closet for all family members. Doing a preholiday wardrobe check means never having to say, “It’s in the wash!” W h y not take the opportunity to organize the holiday decorations as you unpack. Sort, toss the broken stuff, evaluate which items you REALLY like, and lose the excess before you pack it back up. A simple Countdown Organizing Plan that prioritizes your rooms or areas, ensures you get the most meaningful spaces done first - so if you run out of time, you’ll still be OK. And for a great alternative plan, contact the organizing professionals, Smooth Transitions 702-656-2007. They’ll do it all for you. 9 Tim Brooks Why Black Labs? When it comes to dogs, one of the most popular and well known breeds is the Labrador retriever. Black Labs are my favorite. They are very well natured, intelligent, energetic and vie for your attention and love. They offer their undying devotion in return. Black Labs usually weigh between 65 and 90 pounds and have shiny coats, medium length hair, and very powerful tails. Most labs are very fond of the water, which is why they have webbed paws. Their strong tail and webbed paws make them excellent swimmers. I have come to know this breed of dog as one of the strongest I have ever known. Black Labs also make very good pets because of their great temperament. My family growing up had two labs. Their names were Nip and Tuck. I have a Black Lab for a pet now. His name is Jackson. Before him there was Reggie. You’ve probably figured out from those names that I am a huge baseball fan. Jackson loves to chew and because of this, I have to watch him and make sure that he He and I walk twice a day most days, or I should say he walks me and I hope it is attributing to his longevity. Labs, even in their older age, still have so much energy; almost puppy like. By nature, they tend not be too noisy; doesn’t accidentally ingest anything harmful. but will bark He is like a son to me. if they hear a noise they don’t recognize or an He loves to swim in our pool, which is why alert bark from another dog in the neighborhe has his own water deck in the pool. But hood. there is one thing he loves more than anyThey have a good appetite, and will do althing else in the world and that is…….his most anything for a treat. It’s important to not walks! over-feed them though, as obesity is a com- mon health problem among labs. Black Labs will generally live about 12 to 15 years, and should be able to have fairly healthy lives. Food choice is important though and it is good to choose a good healthy brand and stick with it throughout the dog’s life. Not too many table scraps should be given, although I defy anyone to resist a polite beggar like my Jackson. It is a good idea to have their teeth cleaned once a year and it’s important to check their ears regularly to make sure there are no issues. I choose Black Labs because of their more humanized demeanor. They seem to mesh well with my family, friends and kids in the neighborhood. Labs tend to take on our habits; what time we get up for work (even on weekends unfortunately), what time we eat, they know what it means when you turn off the TV at night and they wait for you to come through the door every evening. I just wanted to share my perspective on one of man’s best friends and, don’t forget, every day is a great day! It was a pleasure to meet all of you. I’d also like to wish all of you a wonderful, safe and blessed Holiday season. Now, back to my column. I’m sure you’re wondering what Sperdvac is? It stands for “The society to preserve and encourage radio drama, variety and comedy.” It’s been around for 39 years. (Gee, the same age as Jack Benny!) Every year, they bring in actors to L.A. who have been on many of the old radio shows. We do a re-enactment of various shows that I’m sure many of you are familiar with, such as The Jack Benny Show, Fibber McGee & Molly, My friend Irma, The Great Gildersleeve, Inner Sanctum, and The Whistler; just to name a few. The photo shows me performing in My Friend Irma. It’s done live on stage complete with some of the original actors, along with the music. Even the sound effects are performed the same way they were done so many years ago when families would sit around and listen to their favorite program. For example, if there are supposed to be horses running through the scene, you’ll see the sound effects people clicking coconuts on a table to get that sound! It’s a fun filled day as witnessed by faithful Sperdvac followers as well as publisher Dan and his business partner, Vegas Voice president Ray Sarbacker. They actually flew to Los Angeles to see if this would be something that you, our wonderful readers, might be interested in seeing. I’m glad to say that it was unanimous, and Dianne Davis Hollywood Memories now we are in the planning stages of putting on this fun-filled day in Las Vegas. We’ll be doing radio show re-enactments and various meet-and-greet the radio/movie performers. It is tentatively scheduled to be held at Palace Station in March, 2014. If all goes as planned, there will also be a couple of panels where the actors will be reminiscing about the old days. You might expect to see Tony Dow (Wally, from Leave it to Beaver – See photo with Dan sneaking in the back) Terry Moore, who was the Oscar nominated actress from “Come Back Little Sheba” (as well as having been married to Howard Hughes) Janet Waldo, who was the voice of Judy Jetson, and a lot more surprises. We do hope that Vegas Voice readers remember the good old days when we would all “watch” radio. Hopefully there is an interest and you can plan to be with us as we step back into the Golden Age of Radio. It is that and more. That’s why this celebration of The show is fast paced, the dialogue is clever, and women has been around since 2001 and continues the characters come to life. You’ll be humming to delight audiences around the country. Four women meet in a department store and along to familiar tunes from the 60’s, 70’s and 90’s initially it seems they have nothing in common. as they are reborn with clever new lyrics. 12 Serious? A tad at times. Hilarious? For sure. One character tells how her doctor prescribes a little pill to take away her “urge to kill.” Remember “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”? It returns as “My Husband Sleeps Tonight.” “Staying Alive” becomes “Staying Awake” as they sing about night sweats. “Splishing and Splashing” converts to “Drippin and Droppin.” The choreography is creative as the four divergent personalities find common ground in their experiences and exchange information, complaints, solutions, and commentaries on how “the change” has affected their homes, their jobs, their personal lives, and their perception of themselves. These ladies aren’t “Looking for Love in All The Wrong Places.” Oh no, They are “Looking for Food.” And you’ll laugh out loud as they sing, “Puff, My God, I’m Dragging.” And you’ll laugh even louder as they serenade you with “Good Vibrations.” Menopause The Musical, the longest-running scripted production in Las Vegas, features Paige O’Hara, who voiced the character of Belle in the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast.” Laura Lee O’Connell, who has performed in the musical nationwide, as well as Las Vegas favorites Lisa Mack, Kittra Coomer, Lori Legacy and Richel Kompst also star. Menopause The Musical performs in the Atrium Showroom at Luxor Wednesday – Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $49.95 and $65, excluding tax and service fee, and can be purchased by calling (702) 262-4400. Sacca and the Las Vegas Young Entertainers were invited four times to perform at the White House, in the U.S. Capitol Building and outdoors by the Washington Christmas Tree during the holiday season www.thevegasvoice.net Vicki Wentz It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas Well, my friends, it’s almost Christmas time. Are you ready? Don’t you adore it when people slap you on the back and ask jovially, “Are you ready?” Because, you know darn well that THEY are ready. They’re simply dying for you to tell them “no, you’re nowhere near ready”, just so that they can say, “Gee, I’ve had my Christmas gifts bought since, oh, I think it was Labor Day.” And, you’re supposed to stand there amazed and envious, as they tick off all the things they’re planning to do during the season; things that they have time to do because their shopping is done...things that you have never done, and probably will never do. If this showoff sounds like you, let me say, on behalf of all the folks who are realizing today that the only present we’ve bought so far is a chocolate bar covered with a wrapper that looks like a $1,000,000 bill, because our grandson loves money and chocolate (just like his grandmother), and you already ate half of that - SHUT UP! We don’t want to know how well organized you are, because we have only yesterday, put away the last of the beach towels, stored the deck furniture, and discarded the little pilgrim-hat place cards. Our beautiful green wreath with a big red bow hangs on the front door right above the mushy Halloween pumpkin. This is the best we can do, so get off our backs! In the meantime, to help us all feel a little more Christmas spirit, I have composed a Tabernacle-Choir-quality piece entitled, “Jingle This!” It is to be sung to that timeless Christmas favorite we all enjoy. Let’s all sing along together now, especially mothers - you know, those carefree, unstressed, perfectly-coiffed, baking, shopping, entertaining, wrapping, decorating, schlepping mothers who need a holiday song of our own. The last trace of Fall vanishes as the Sun leaves the final degree of Sagittarius and moves forward to 0° Capricorn. This is the day of the Winter Solstice when the sun is at the lowest point of declination, the shortest day of the year. It symbolizes a dark time - a time to reflect on the passing year. Yes, Winter is here for 3 long months – our first big chill. Venus, the planet of love, money and beauty, zaps us with yet another chill. Within hours of the Winter Solstice, Venus changes direction, turning from direct motion to retrograde. Throughout the Yuletide and Holiday Season, Venus will be retrograde, thus modifying our holiday spirit. The last Christmas we had with a Venus retrograde was 8 years ago in 2005. (Wish I could remember what that one was like - must pay attention to this coming one!) Does any- one remember anything different in the 2005 holidays? Basically, whenever a planet is retrograde, its energy is directed more internally rather than outwardly. It’s not the world that brings the joy, but the subconscious feeling of love and fulfillment from one’s own self. When planets are retrograde their energy is calmer and more internal. Perhaps this year’s Venus retrograde will focus on the real spirit of the holidays, rather than the things we give and receive. “Love and value comes from within and not from a thing,” is what Venus retrograde is trying to tell us. Will we grasp her message? This year’s Venus retrograde is in the sign Aura-tica 16 Tiffany Fairfax is a Professional Astrologer with 30 years experience. Animate or not, everything that is made up of a physical body also has an energy body. An aura, is the electro-magnetic field that surrounds each and every thing (aka: life force energy, bio or auric field, etc.). It’s the wonderful glow of multicolored emanations that exude from all things and envelopes each like a giant halo or cocoon. Thanks go to Semyon Kirlian, who in the 1960’s, discovered a technique that makes it possible to capture and display auras on film. Of course, there are skeptics that repudiate the process by claiming that it shows and proves nothing. However, those that understand and recognize the significance of revealing the multiple layers of the aura are especially excited about being able to examine the etheric body. As this revelation has become more accessible and acceptable, it has given hope and better insight into the benefits obtainable from this process in the fields of psychology, medicine, and psychic healing. While the auras of healthy plants are ordi- of Capricorn, a very practical sign. I’ll bet the kinds of gifts that are exchanged will be a lot more useful and practical. For example, I’ll be giving a book by Brenda Prinzavalli (Fox 5 TV’s Organizer on the More Show). No matter how you elect to spend the holidays, be sure to make it personally valuable. Think about what really matters and make that your theme. Venus retrograde in Capricorn says spend your time doing something you value, something that’s worthwhile and worth your time. Capricorns are achievers and they always want to see results for the work they do. Listen to yourself this season; go inside yourself and listen to what makes you happy and bring that to the forefront. Celebrate in your very own magical Venus retrograde way. Even a party for one is a party! Venus will continue its retrograde motion into the New Year. It will turn direct on January 31st, 2014. We start our new year with the love and money planets backwards. This forecasts that 2014 will be off to a slow start in those areas, but that there is also a chance to re-coup losses and to re-assess our values. Regardless of the retrograde, Venus is still Venus. I’m sending all of you warm wishes for Happy Holidays. Enjoy and celebrate in your own special way! narily a blur of white light, animals and humans produce colors. There is already huge evidence that by understanding the aura’s formation, shape, patterns of frequencies, colors, brightness/dullness, light changes, etc., a trained eye can diagnose a person’s state of health, their mood, mental being, personality, passions, characteristics, and even their life purpose. For example, in my personal experience, after seeing hundreds of aura photos, it was easy to determine a diabetic’s aura. Although the aura changes colors from minute to minute, diabetics had a mostly yellow aura with thin, red vein-like lines. When a person had green in their aura, we knew they were willing to heal. Another inter- esting conclusion came from an experiment performed at the University of California’s Center for Health Sciences. They amputated a portion of a leaf on a plant; yet on film, its aura still appeared in its entirety - which could explain why a person feels pain in their limb even after amputation. Since the size and colors of the aura change all the time, there are ways we can control these changes. To measure a person’s aura you will need a pair of L shaped dowsing rods or make some out of some dry cleaner hangers. (1) Find a large open area and stand 10 feet away from the person. (2) With your arms touching your body at your waist area, hold the rods like a gun pointing forward. (3) Hold the rods very loosely and once positioned, walk slowly towards the person. (4) The rods will split on their own when entering the other person’s energy field and measure the distance from the person’s body to where the rods split. You can also change your aura size by merely changing your attitude and energy level. Although this is over simplified, to change your colors you will first need to establish which color to create. Purple = spiritual awareness; blue = serenity; turquoise = influencing others; green = healing; yellow = freedom; orange = uplifting; red = materialistic; pink = love. Proudly wear the colors - and don’t forget the power of visualization. Need to stay current and relevant in your own life? So far, I haven’t found much use for any of them, so sharing them here gives them a new purpose. My annual dog calendar has great quotes such as: “Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in your car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear” (Dave Barry). And: “Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful” (Ann Landers). How about those fortune cookies? If only we could count on them! I’ve been told I will inherit a large sum of money from an unusual source. That must be right, since if I do inherit something, it will certainly be unusual. Another cookie asked the question “How can you have a beautiful ending without making beautiful mistakes?” If that’s true, I have a whopper of an ending ahead of me for sure. The refrigerator holds warnings on magnets such as “Be nice to me! With a minimum of effort I can make things very difficult.” And “If you can’t be a good example, you’ll just have to be an excellent warning.” Words to live by. My wishful thinking magnet says “I’m over-pampered and spoiled rotten. I deserve much better than this.” For those days when nothing goes right, we have: “Caution. I go from 0 to bitch in 2.5 seconds.” The folder quotes goes back over 30 years from places I’ve worked. Remember this? “Some things are like Slinkys…..not really good for anything but it still brings a smile to your face when you push it down a flight of stairs.” The definition of stress never changes either. “Stress: Strain, pressure and the internal confusion generated when the mind attempts to override the body’s basic urge to choke the living daylights out of some jerk who desperately needs it.” Since this column is about being in my 60’s, here’s one that came true. Jarvis Marlow Rainbow Community Youth Theatre Three years ago, I set out on this journey with The Vegas Voice to help the local theatre community grow and prosper in our valley. One of the first theatre troops to embrace our vision was the Rainbow Community Youth Theatre group. With nearly four decades, they are one of the longest running culture outlets in Las Vegas. They are located at the Charleston Heights Arts Center at 800 South Brush Street in Las Vegas and provide professional training for young people and theatre classes to all ages. The Friends of the Rainbow Company stated that starting in 1976 as a city program, it was almost named the Peanut Butter & Jelly Players. As humorous as that might have been, the company is glad the name did not “stick to the roof of anyone’s mouth.” But their goal did - A mission to create outstanding young artists in the Las Vegas community and continually offering the best theatre training for young people in the country. 18 ine: “It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffeemaker!” A plaque in my kitchen reads “The best antiques are old friends.” I make it a point to regularly comb through things and always get lost in remembering why I saved them. It’s entertaining and makes me happy. With the digital age upon us, I still post what I like all over the place and smile every time I pass by the clutter on my fridge or desk. I have so much, that I have to rotate them every few years. Maybe one day I’ll take everything and make a photo book out of it for the coffee table. That may be the only way to sort 40 years of clippings. And the final words of wisdom from a cookie: “Half of being smart is knowing what you’re dumb about.” That can keep you busy for a long time. The City of Las Vegas Office of Culture Affairs is their governing agency. The city’s web site proclaims that, “The Rainbow Company Youth Theatre is a nationally recognized theatre education program.” Each year, the Rainbow Company produces a four-show season of family oriented theatre. As a theatre editor, I am well-aware that “family oriented” in Las Vegas can be difficult to find. And as a family man, it is wonderful to report that the city has done well to keep ticket prices at $5.00 per person. As part of my mission to get readers of The Vegas Voice to venture out and attend performances, I also hope to encourage the more adventurous readers to also participate. Casting for Rainbow Company shows are age appropriate - adults in adult roles and children in children’s roles, with all auditions open to members of the community. Their website makes it known that there is always a need for adults to audition. If any of our readers step out and audition for any role with any theatre group, please contact me at [email protected] and I Our Live Las Vegas will write a feature article on your journey! As previously mentioned, the Rainbow Company performs four times per year – the 2013/2014 season has three performance left: Scrooge The Musical; December 6-15 and then in 2014 they will produce The Nevada Series; February 14-16 and Ozma of Oz; April 25-27 and May 2-4. If you are able to support the Rainbow Company, I suggest you join with your time, talents, resources and generous contributions. Friends of the Rainbow Company is an independent, non-profit, volunteer organization to support The Rainbow Company Youth Theater. Through fundraising, The Friends state that they “have achieved many goals with helping The Rainbow Company maintain the highest standards in youth theater.” Donations assist with production costs as well as bringing in guest artists. There are several ways that you can help out. If you have a little or a lot, they welcome any support that can be offered. Please visit their website at www.friendsofrainbow.org. www.thevegasvoice.net december13 19 John Rothman Stepping out with Aliante Steppers Let me first wish all our readers a peaceful and loving holiday season and a new year filled with nothing but good things. Can you believe that another year has gone? Too fast for me, I’m afraid. It’s been a whirlwind for sure and most of the senior performers I know will agree. Nonetheless, I couldn’t be happier with all the shows we presented this year and “Sparkle and Spice” on December 1st was the cherry on the top. A host of senior dancers and singers helped to make this a wonderful way of bidding farewell to 2013 and ringing in the holiday season. It was the biggest Sunday Funday show we’ve done at Sun City MacDonald Ranch. And I must thank the Dance Club once again for giving me the opportunity to showcase so many talented and dedicated artists. One of the excellent groups who graced the stage was Margo Young’s Aliante Steppers from north of the city. They are always immaculate in their presentations, beautifully costumed and held in the highest regards by their fellow performers and audiences. Their inventive and polished routines have been seen in numerous local productions and they feature prominently in every year’s Ms Senior Nevada Pageant. This delightful ensemble travels all over the State and never fails to bring a touch of sophistication and grace to any event - much of it due to the experienced guidance of Margo Young. She works closely with acclaimed choreographer Pam Baltz who has been responsible for creating routines ranging from jazz to country, sensitive to lyrical. A joy to watch. Margo danced in flashy productions like the legendary Folies Bergere at the Tropicana, the ShowBuzz Stardust’s Lido de Paris and Casino de Paris at the Dunes. Deliciously tall, she was an absolute stunner when she was crowned Ms Showgirl International in 1971. As a senior, she claimed the Ms Senior Nevada title in 2009, assuring her even more accolades in an already star-spangled career. To Margo, Pam and the Aliante Steppers, a special thanks for bringing your grace and style to “Sparkle and Spice.” And so we face another year (and an unwanted birthday) to see what 2014 holds. If 2013 was any indication, we’d better strap on a helmet (sequined, of course) and some protective gear as it looks like a giddying ride. Along with teaching and rehearsals and four quarterly shows and charity performances and guest appearances on Ms Senior Nevada Pageant Showcase and Senior Idol and Candlelight Cabaret, Sun City Anthem is considering staging “VegaStory,” a musical I wrote to tell the amazing history of this unbelievable city we live in. I always take a quiet moment to thank God for giving me this life in the performing arts. Like in the great Abba number, I can truly say: Without a song or a dance, what are we? So I say: “Thank you for the music, for bringing it to me.” John Rothman is a dancer/choreographer/singer/composer with a passion for keeping seniors involved in the performing arts. You are more than welcome to drop him a line at [email protected]. Holiday at the Ranch Come & enjoy “Holiday at the Ranch” presented by the Sun City MacDonald Ranch Variety Club Players on Saturday, December 14th at 7 pm in the Zion Ballroom located at Sun City MacDonald Ranch, 2020 Horizon Ridge Parkway, 20 Henderson 89012. Your admission ticket will be placed in our raffle. www.thevegasvoice.net december13 21 Stu Cooper - Travel Editor Celebrating our 60th Birthday - Again! It looks as if the 1st anniversary of our 60th birthday trip has been set. As I previously advised in past columns, publisher Dan and I were born three days apart in August of 1953. So we celebrated the big 6-0 back in August. We had always talked about a big 60th birthday trip. And for reasons previously mentioned (my daughter’s wedding and all the plans involved), we had to postpone our travel plans. Dan and I now have a second chance and therefore it is with great enthusiasm that I can announce that we have picked a trip and destination to celebrate our long gone 60th birthday. Our plan is to cruise on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Serenade of the Seas, October 29th to November 6th, 2014 on an eight night Mediterranean cruise. The ship will depart from Rome and end in Barcelona. Ports of call include Livorno (Pisa/Florence), Nice, Corsica, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Barcelona. Wow; three great countries - Italy, France and Spain in one cruise. 22 Pricing for this “dream come true” on a cruise only basis is unbelievable. Inside cabins start at just $793.00 per person. The ocean view rate is $1,063.00 per person. And the balcony rate is $1,253.00 per person. These rates are based on double occupancy and include all port taxes and fees. Air fare from Las Vegas to Rome and back from Barcelona is additional. Pricing and schedules are not even available for most airlines as this trip is nearly a year away and Happy Destinations most airline schedules are not posted this early. Generally speaking airfare should run approximately $1,000 per person. Please feel free to call me at 1-800-698-1101 and we can help with air fare and schedules. Please consider joining publisher Dan and me as we sail the Med. While on board, we will host cocktail parties and we will also provide on-board amenities and shipboard credits. This should be an absolutely fantastic “60th birthday” celebration and we would love all Vegas Voice readers and Vegas Vacationers to share the fun. *** I also want to thank all of you who attended our most recent Vegas Voyagers last month. We had over 125 members join us for our presentation. We announced a number of trips including our ever popular “Bus to the Boat” program and a number of longer exotic cruises that many of our members enjoy. I even spoke about the Holy land trip to Israel I will be escorting August 16-26, 2014. If you have any interest in visiting Israel, please call me at 1-800-698-1101 and I can send you a comprehensive itinerary and fact sheet. I hope all had a Happy Hanukah and a good Thanksgiving. And to all our Vegas Voyagers, Merry Christmas and hope you all have a happy and healthy New Year. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting to kick off 2014. As always, happy destinations. www.thevegasvoice.net december13 23 Kathy Manney New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon This past summer, New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon earned another international designation: the refuge of dark night skies. Chaco Canyon holds an air of serenity and peace, while shadow and light streak across the ancient ruins built by the Chacoan Indians. Chaco is a remarkable feat of building that began in the mid-800’s A.D. and lasted more than 300-years. Chaco is one of the wonders of North America. Immense buildings, not built for residential use, spread through the ruins. After more than three centuries, the Chaco Indians stopped building. They migrated away; burning many of their 24 buildings. Evidence indicates that they didn’t leave with any urgency - but why they left remains a mystery. The Chacoan people abandoned their homes to the wind and time; unlike Italy’s Pompeii, where the people and the area were catastrophically covered by volcanic ash. What is striking about the two ancient communities (more than an ocean apart) however, are the similarity in structures. Both were remarkable urban centers, constructed by expert brick masons who employed precision in creating multistoried buildings with habitable rooms, containing both doors and windows. Some of the homes rose three and four stories in the rear stepping down to one story in front. Both cultures built great roads to be connected for commerce and travel. Both amaze and inspire. The vista in all directions from Chaco Canyon is high desert landscape unobstructed by vegetation; making the distance seem endless. The Ponderosa Pine beams used in the buildings had to have been brought from a forested area more than 60-miles away. Though Chaco was the center of a far-ranging trade network like Pompeii, their culture began to change in the 1100’s and 1200’s. As they migrated to new areas, they ultimately interacted with foreign cultures arriving in the region. Many Southwestern Indian people regard Chaco as a significant stop along their clan’s sacred migration paths - considering it a place Around Our World to be honored and respected. Chaco Canyon is a fascinating place to explore, but to reach it, one must venture onto a road less traveled. The 16-mile unpaved thoroughfare leading into the canyon is a washboard bordered by rangeland where an occasional elk herd can be spotted and wild horses freely roam. The day we visited, our vehicle had to stop for a flock of sheep being herded by a trained sheep dog, with no human visibly nearby. The park’s natural nighttime darkness is entirely unpolluted by outreach light. Chaco Canyon is the twelfth worldwide site to receive the certification of International Dark-Sky Park from the Tucson based International Dark-Sky Association. The bid for the title began in response to the National Park Service initiative “Starry Starry Night.” Chaco Culture National Historical Park is located in northwestern New Mexico. Park rangers offer question and answer walks. Kathy Manney enjoys visiting interesting places and being an Adventure Diva. White, D.D.S Understanding Dental Insurance - Part II “The cost of living is like bread dough, always on the rise.” As I discussed last month, unless the patient asks for or agrees to an “upgrade” in quality of care, having dental insurance will always mandate the lowest quality of care. Here is a perfect example. Dental insurance will pay for a crown to be replaced every five years. Why? Chances are the crown that was originally done for insurance mandated fees was performed as cheaply as possible by a marginally trained technician with the cheapest products. This ensures a poor prognosis for success beyond five years. The insurance company knows that the quality the patient receives will be what they will pay for; so the company had to make a provision as to when they were willing to reimburse for the crown to be re-done. I can speak with confidence when I say that a dentist cannot keep making a new crown on a tooth every five years without something drastic happening to that tooth. Indeed, the tooth would be lost. This how- 26 ever, is a win-win for the insurance company. If there is no tooth, there is no expense to the insurance company. And, by the way, most dental insurance will not pay to have the teeth replaced with implants. In my opinion, dental insurance is a legal scam. There are differences in dental care, just as there are with any skilled labor. Comprehensive dentistry that is done well, results in healthy jaw joints, comfortable muscles, good function, lovely aesthetics - and lasts for years and years. A patient that I treated in my previous Connecticut practice recently sent me a note. He has a new dentist who did an examination and asked him, “when did you have those gold onlays (like crowns) done? Two or three years ago?” He responded: “Slightly longer - 33 years ago!” Purchasing upgraded, high-quality dentistry will assuredly cost less over the long run. Cheap dentistry will always cost a fortune in actual dollars, discomfort, poor cosmetics, and time in the dental chair. When I began practicing in 1972 dental The Dentist insurance benefits were $1,000 - $1,500 per year. In 2013, the dental benefit is the same amount! Think about that! I would bet that there isn’t anyone who could think of something that has remained the same price over the last 41 years? Regrettably, dental insurance benefits have. Do not let insurance companies who haven’t increased their benefits in 40+ years dictate what your teeth are worth. One is not in good health without good oral health. Make no mistake, an insurance company does not care what you look like, or if you can chew, or whether you have dental pain or infections. It is up to you to make certain that your dentist does not dumb down the quality of his/her care to meet guidelines that were determined by an actuary, not a dentist. My message for readers is to understand that just because you have a dental insurance benefit does not mean that you must be subject to, and accept insurance-mandated quality. Use your benefit to the extent you can, but put it toward having comprehensive, quality care for long term health, aesthetics and comfort. www.thevegasvoice.net december13 27 Richard Warren Consumer Voice Workers of a Certain Age While not really a consumer issue, there is one topic I’ve heard a lot about over the last few months. The issue is age bias experienced by those seeking employment. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission clearly states: “Age discrimination involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) less favorably because of his age.” The question is - how do you prove it is discrimination based on age, rather than some other factor? The goal of an employer is, and certainly should be, to hire the best available applicant for whatever position they need to fill. If the employer receives a number of applications and elects to hire a younger person with lesser qualifications, does that automatically mean it’s age discrimination? Absolutely not. The employer may wish to have someone they can train to perform according to their needs, rather than hire someone who may be set in their ways. An employer can probably come up with quite a few reasons for favoring a younger person which may be perfectly valid. This is why age discrimination can be so hard to prove. Age bias, as well as gender bias, race bias, and even weight bias exists. Some of it is intentional, but quite a lot of it is not. Sticking with age in this case, often the human resources person in charge of the selection process is a younger person, or at least younger than the applicant. They could simply be predisposed to favor people near their own age bracket. While this does not make it right, it may explain some of the age bias that does exist. So how does an older applicant deal with it - short of suing every potential employer that doesn’t hire them? By not calling attention to their age. The complaint I’m hearing from older job seekers is that they can’t even get an interview. They feel like they would have a chance of getting a job if they had the opportunity to present themselves. Unfortunately it may be the application or résumé they submit that keeps them from getting that interview. It’s only natural that someone would want to showcase their knowledge and experience by listing everything they’ve done on their application. What this does though is tell the person screening the applications how old they are. It’s simple math to figure out that someone who has forty or more years of work experience and graduated high school in the late 1960s is nearing or already at retirement age. Even though the job applicant may have no desire, or ability to retire, the employer may view the applicant as nothing more than a very short term worker. Does that mean the applicant should lie? Absolutely not. They should be careful however about listing dates. Showing only the last ten years of work history is often sufficient. Don’t list every job unless it is absolutely necessary. For education, list the schools attended without listing the year of graduation if possible. While some may not agree with this advice, the goal of an application or résumé is to get an interview. Then it’s up to the applicant to earn a job offer. Richard Warren is a passionate consumer advocate. Bert (despised son-in-law) was an individual on an alternative career path (a loser) and motivationally deficient (beyond lazy). His female offspring (daughter), Kate, was romantically non-obser vant (lovesick and blind) and unable to comprehend (an idiot) in discerning (to notice) that her future male marital partner (husband/ bum) was going to be involuntarily leisured (unemployed) and would become a person of substance (fat). Unfortunately, she is parasitically oppressed (pregnant) with their second youngster (child/crumb-snatcher). Their first adolescent (child/rug-rat), Sam, was 6 years-old and because Kate had to work two occupations (jobs) for lifestyle maintenance (supporting deadbeat husband), Mike was asked to be visually receptive (baby-sit) over Sam, three days a week. Sam was vertically restrictive (thin), sensitively repressed (moody), psychologically selective (uncontrollable), socially challenged (nerd) with rebellious follicle syndrome (bad hair day) and had an advance gifted (razorsharp) mind. Initially, Sam was circumspect (wary) toward Grandfather Mike. Each day, Mike would take his descendant (grandson) to the local pre-university (high school) for intense physical exercise (running) to work off his post partum depression (shell-shock). Sam would sit guardedly (distrustful) on the sidelines until one day, he jumped off the bleacher and ran alongside. Then the pre-teen (kid/curtain-climber) darted past him. Sam’s little legs pumped hard; harder and faster like underworld be- ings (demons) chasing him until Mike grabbed Sam’s shoulder to voluntarily control (stop) him. The boy had a sudden emotional occurrence (cried) in obvious distress (pain). Mike displayed concern (frowned) at the boy. While Sam opposed strongly (struggled), Mike eventually pulled up Sam’s shirt. Fist sized body discolorations (bruises) covered the boney little chest and left side. WTF… “Who did this to you?” He’ll permanently remove (kill) the SOB. Sam looked away shaking his head and biting his quivering lips. Mike’s eyes narrowed and began to propose powerfully (demand) answers which resulted in discovering that Bert was responsible. All political correctness aside and holding Sam’s hand, he marched to his truck, waited patiently while Sam carefully buckled in, then drove like hell. Once at his daughter’s house, he confronted Bert. “Punch a little kid, will you?” Mike proceeded to beat the crap out of Bert. He kicked the SOB’s ass (literally) as he stumbled down the front porch steps. Sam watched, not in horror, but with a warped fascinated glee on his face. Then Sam glanced up just as Mike looked down. A gaze full of mutual understanding and love passed between them. Mike reached down and lifted Sam into his arms. Sam wrapped his small, thin arms around Mike’s neck and hugged with all his might. Now, Bert is blaming PTSD (obvious horse----) from his inability to find a discerning career field (get a job) and for temporarily being control challenged (having a violent temper) toward his son. He is pleading through the courts to get custody of his son. Mike used every connection he had, fought every damn self-righteous judge, snooty treehugging social worker and worthless fancy pants attorney until he was granted custody of Sam. Musical Moments Yvonne Cloutier Isn’t it Romantic Romantic is a term describing a style of western classical music. It originated in Europe, evolving around 1800 and flourishing to the 1890s, when ragtime, the precursor to jazz, developed. In the Romantic period, music became more artistic, intellectual, colorful, and passionate. It implied fantasy, spontaneity and sensuality - but not necessarily romantic love between lovers. With this new era in music, young composers, being bored and restless with the old, strove to be creatively different. New ideas usually come from young composers, gradually allowing their imaginations and passions to weave through their works shedding the classical belief of logical order, rules, regulations, and restraint. It is characteristic of human nature to accept change only gradually. There is rarely a clear line. Musical rules continued to be broken and the straying away from the rigidity of the baroque and earlier classical period resulted. 30 Music became more lyrical, with song-like melodies, richer harmonies, surprises and thrills. There developed recurring recognizable themes and greater technical virtuosity. With the expansion of the orchestra (as new instruments developed) musicians developed ways to get new sounds out of established instruments, and, most importantly, the elevation of genius performers to star soloists. Composers began by following Beethoven’s model of his symphonies, gradually finding their own balance between emotion and structure. Again, Beethoven began the disconnection and was a crucial figure in the transition between the classical and romantic eras as heard in his Symphony No. 9. It was an age of revolution. The industrial revolution, and the rise of the middle class through collective bargaining, helped promote change. It was, in essence, a revolt toward freedom of life, expression and thought. Musical storytelling became important. They began exploring the music of their native countries. Nationalism became a driving force expressing cultural identity; particularly in Russia and Eastern Europe where folk music was incorporated into symphonies - such as in Tchaikovsky‘s works. Musical colors were necessary to depict exotic scenes that became popular like Spanish landscapes of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol. Operas were set in exotic locales such as Verdi’s Aida in Ancient Egypt. The Romantic period was the heyday of the virtuoso; particularly pianists, violinists, and singers. The artist was glorified, whether musician, poet or painter. Liszt, the great Hungarian pianist/composer, played with such passion and virtu- osity that, allegedly, women in the audience would faint. These gifted performers wrote finger breaking music, with spontaneous cadenzas, that displayed their dizzying talent; thus drawing great crowds at their concerts. Some other gifted composers and performers of this period were Berlioz, Mahler, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms. There was Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Chopin‘s beautiful character pieces for solo piano, Wagner‘s dark operas, Rossini‘s operas, Strauss‘s waltzes. This new development in musical history, that began over 200 years ago, probably more than any other music, other than ragtime, had a powerful impact on all cultures. Yvonne Cloutier, a former teacher/principal, with a music background, specializes in ragtime piano. She is also an author and has written an easy-to-read book on Scott Joplin. Y0040_GHHHFLRHH Accepted december13 31 Sydney-Suzann Ingram Women in the Coast Guard Throughout history, women have served in the US Coast Guard. It all began in 1791, when a young woman named “Black Marie,” famous for her brawn and boxing skills, was hired by a shipping company to protect its cargo. Thus the “Revenue Cutter Service” was formed. Next came women who served in the Lighthouse Service, rescuing those in peril on the open sea. The Lighthouse Service became one of the few professions open to women during the nineteenth century. The last woman keeper was Fannie Salter. She retired in 1948 after 23 years of service. This marked the close of nearly 150 years of women serving as lighthouse keepers. These women performed many acts of heroism, rescuing men from the sea, guiding ships and never failing those mariners who depended on them. As World War I began, women were recruited to join the Coast Guard, as reserves, to fill office vacancies; thus freeing men for combat. These women were called “Yoemanettes” and Women Warriors were released as soon as the war ended. World War II opened up more opportunities. With over 16 million American men fighting overseas, women, once again, were called to serve their country. Navy Lt. Dorothy Stratton agreed to transfer to the Coast Guard, as the director of the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve. Instead of reusing the name “Yoemanettes,” Stratton chose to call the female reservists SPARS, an acronym for the Coast Guard motto: Semper Paratus, Always Ready. Not all Coast Guard men welcomed these women. One Captain, when hearing that women were coming into the service, exploded with “My God! Dogs and now WOMEN in the Coast Guard!” Las Vegas has its own SPAR—Billie S. D’Entremont (Gallagher). She enlisted in 1943, attended Boot Training at Hunter College in the Bronx and later Yoemen training at Oklahoma A&M. She served as a recruiter in Wisconsin and Minnesota and was later assigned to a medical unit in Honolulu. As the photo indicates, one of her most memorable moments was having her picture taken with heavyweight boxing champion, Lt. Col. Jack Dempsey, a Coast Guard Reservist who was appointed to be the Director of Physical Fitness with orders to “Make em Tough.” Billie tells of a time when she and another SPAR were walking down the street and were stopped by two Marines on traffic duty. They were told that they were out of uniform, since they were not wearing stockings and would be issued a citation, unless the two Marines, were given a pass for the recreation center on Moanloa Ridge base. As guests, they could have two beers and dance till closing. Everyone knew that stockings were not required of the SPARS in Honolulu if their legs were tanned. It was a good trade off and later a fun evening for all. Y2C Billie D’Entremont completed her tour of duty in 1945. In 1947 the SPARS were demobilized and re-established in 1949. In 1973, Congress terminated the SPARS as a separate branch of the Coast Guard and thus made women eligible for regular and reserve units. In 1977, women were permitted to serve aboard seagoing Coast Guard vessels. Billie and I are proud members of Women Veterans of Nevada. We are seeking new members. The other night I took my daughter Jessica and her boyfriend Tim for a birthday celebration to Roma Garden Italian Restaurant. It’s a wonderful, joyful haunt in Henderson. Roma Garden, an intimate restaurant with the best Italian food, reminds me of when Jessica was a teenager, and I’d take her to Di Martino’s Italian Restaurant on Maryland Parkway. Di Martino’s was an old school, Vegas hangout with good Italian food and great music. Not only is Roma Garden’s food fabulous - like the shrimp scampi and eggplant rollattini, but our dining experience is always enhanced by Renato Di Antonio, the owner. He plays an elegant white piano in the corner and singing songs like “Unforgettable” and “New York, New York.” Years ago, Jess and I would drop into a Di Martino’s, have a great meal, listen to soulful music and connect with each Creating Happiness other. My daughter would catch me up on her teen drama crushes and school intrigue. And for me, I had the chance to relax and enjoy my lovely Jessica. Charming and creative Renato told me about his goal for Roma Garden. “My passion is food and music, and they should always be together,” he explained in his sexy Italian accent. “That’s why I opened Roma Garden in the Von’s Shopping Center. Food should accompany music and music food. They enhance each other.” Previously Renato entertained in Rome, where he was born, then on cruise ships and in the Hollywood area. After years of owning large restaurants like Trilussa in Beverly Hills and Roma Grill on Eastern Avenue, he and his charming wife Nina decided to scale back. They opened Roma Garden, com- bining great food and good music. Every time Renato sings when I’m dining at Roma Garden, I want to dance and think about Las Vegas when I was younger. Renato joked to me, “I always ask my guests which is better, the food or the music?” I really can’t answer this question, because both are enchanting. Renato and Nina have created a unique combination. And there is more to come. In a few weeks, Renato is going to play Italian music along with a inspiring video of Florence, Rome, Pisa, and Milan. Guests will feel as if they are taking a trip through Italy as they enjoy the pasta, chicken parmesan, eggplant, and of course my favorite, shrimp scampi in a heavenly, buttery garlic sauce. With the holidays so busy, think about enjoying Roma Garden for a quick bite after shopping. Imagining your group dining and dancing to Renato’s lovely serenades makes me happy. My daughter and I laughed the other night and reminisced about going to Di Martino’s every Sunday years ago where we talked, enjoyed music, Italian food and made memories. Roma Gardens could be this place for you - experiencing a spectacular world of music and food! What a way to enjoy the holiday season and the last month of the year! Dick Arendt The Curse of Being Born in December I know: “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year.” I’ve heard it for almost 67 years. And until now, I’ve just smiled and replied in kind. However, I am now a senior citizen, I’m expected to complain, and I’m gonna complain ! So after all these years, it’s time! I was born 26 minutes from 1947 - on December 31, 1946. And...the only one who got a good deal out of that was my dad! He got an extra income tax exemption of what was $600 way back when. I loved my dad. He was a character, and I previously wrote an article about him last Father’s Day; but knowing him for the “frugality” he displayed during his life, I can certainly visualize him saying: “Rosie, push...we need the deduction!” My mother must have spent New Year’s Eve in agony. And I actually have a clipping from the Chicago Tribune announcing my being one of the closest kids born to the new year Birthday. No sir! Just one for both! And it all started as a child. A few toys....with socks and underwear. Stuff that a kid hates to get...much less for Christmas or a birthday. And whatever I received was to cover both occasions. La De Da. Meanwhile my little brother, who was born in March, would get the socks and underwear and toys on Christmas, and still get another stockpile shortly thereafter for his birthday. It wasn’t fair, and finally, after 67 years, I’m complaining! And what was even worse, I couldn’t sleep late the morning after my birthday because Catholics have to attend mass on January 1st or of 1947. suffer the pains of hell. Over the years, I’ve had La De Da ! I was too young to eat the ice to get up early that day, in the freezing cold cream or birthday cake. (possibly wearing my new Christmas/Birthday Anyone out there who was born near Christ- socks), or face eternal damnation! mas knows where I’m headed with this. It’s Then what do I do? called “Christmas/Birthday” presents your I marry a Jewish girl who looks at Christwhole life ! mas and New Year’s as days she’ll be withNot one for Christmas and another for out jazzercise or zumba classes because our Recreation Center will be closed. To add to my misery, she doesn’t know how to cook baked ham and I can’t even go to a restaurant to eat it because it’s either closed for the holiday or they charge an arm and a leg for it on that “special” day. And then to top in all off - the world can’t wait for the day your birthday ends! Oh the thrill of it all! And it all started with a spring day in late March, when the Chicago cold needed a little “bodily warmth” to create a human being that entered this world on December 31, 1946! However, they say “what goes around, comes around” and to my dad, who thought he was saving $600 in 1946 on his income taxes, I ended up costing him a lot more than $600 on those cars of his I wrecked over the years. To my little brother who never sends me a birthday card or even picks up the phone to wish his older brother a Happy Birthday or Merry Christmas, he now gets free casino teeshirts as gifts for his thoughtfulness...on both Christmas and his birthday. And to wifey - who now celebrates hubby’s birthday with some strange ceremony of holding a mirror under his nose as she gazes on that once sleek beast who falls asleep at 8:30 pm on that day; you now get the privilege of buying those smelly socks and “expanding” undies. But to all of you...I wouldn’t have changed a single moment for the memories you gave me on every birthday/Christmas over all those years. Happy holidays (and love) to all of you. Not Another Migrane Local Doctor Offers Hope for Sufferers of Headaches, Migraines and Mystery Head-pain Dear Friend, You can feel it coming on. It’s that all too familiar pain that you have come to expect on a consistent basis. Maybe it’s once a month, maybe twice a week; for some unfortunates, it’s as often as every day. They take their toll on the job and at home, resulting in lost income, strained relationships and an inferior quality of life. But, if you are a headache, migraine or mystery headpain sufferer, you already know all of this. Here’s the thing. In my office, most of the people that come in to see me tell me they’ve “tried everything.” Many people prefer to escape into the comfort of their beds, with the lights off, the shades down and no noise. When the pain finally breaks, they may feel exhausted, weak, confused or even hung over. They’ve had “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that (at best) temporarily mask symptoms. That’s not what most people are looking for. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about myself. At the time, I’m a student in good ol’ Atlanta, Georgia, and life is good. But then, it happens: I get rammed by a truck and get hurt so badly I can’t sit up without reaching behind my own head and lifting up. The pain in my head (also my neck and back) gets so intense I can’t sit in class, concentrate and to be very frank, it puts me in a bad mood - and that’s not me! I’m afraid my dreams of being a doctor are slipping away. I try a few things, and after considering surgery (that’s the only option, according to the doctor) I decide against it. But, there’s more… A friend convinces me to give his doctor a try. This doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then “adjusts” my upper neck. The doctor tells me by getting my head on straight, even my low-back can get better. The adjustment doesn’t hurt, there was no “cracking,”; it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly, I can turn my head without my body going with it. Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a NUCCA chiropractor? NUCCA Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other “miracles” I see in his office, that I eventually get specially trained as a NUCCA chiropractor myself. And that’s how it happened! Headaches and migraines may be your body’s negative reaction to nerve interference in the upper cervical spine (neck region); specifically in the first vertebra, the atlas. Nerve interference doesn’t always result from head trauma such as an accident, an injury or a fall. It can result from years of poor posture, stress and even the birth process itself given the extreme pressure on a baby’s neck due to the pushing, pulling and twisting that’s part of any delivery! And it can take years for any type of body damage (illness, condition) to show up! Nerve interference in the upper cervical spine negatively affects communication between the brain and the body; causing the body to malfunction. NUCCA doctors receive specific training to locate, correct and remove nerve interference so that these malfunctions, including headaches and migraines, are corrected, without drugs! Meet Some of Your Neighbors We’ve Seen: “I don’t have headaches anymore. The Mayo Clinic told me there was pressure at my brainstem. That’s where Dr. Luzod came in” (Chris Acara – Las Vegas) “I flew in from Indiana for relief. I’ve been to pain clinics and tried every drug they could dig out of the wastebasket. Now I fly back monthly because I feel terrific! ” (Gene Stauffer, Elkhart, IN) “My migraines were debilitating, I felt like I wanted to pull my eye-balls out. Since coming here I really haven’t had any more!” (Stephanie - Henderson) “I now have no anxiety, depression or headaches. I tell people, if you have headaches, you need to be here.” (Brian – Las Vegas) You Benefit from an Amazing Offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article, you will receive a complete consultation, examination, an x-ray of the problem area - the whole ball of wax. This work-up normally costs $180, however, when you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule you’ll receive the entire work-up for $37. The folks at Medicare won’t let us give this discount to those with federal insurance - but not to worry. I can still give those over 65 a complimentary consultation; just to see if I can help. But, please call right away because this offer expires soon, and I don’t want you to miss out. By the way, further care is very affordable. You see I’m not trying to seduce you to come see me with this great offer, then to only make it up with high fees after that. Great care at a great fee. Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a big heart and want to help you get checked out. You’ll get great care at a great fee. I just have this offer to help more people who need care. My qualifications: I’m a 1999 graduate of Life University and have been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know, and have even been interviewed on every television news channel in the city (3, 5, 8 and channel 13!). They loved NUCCA. A friend helped me put the interviews up on our website: www.DrDevin.com. My assistants are Brandi and Renee and they are really great ladies. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called SPINAL CARE OF NEVADA and it is at 1930 Village Center Circle, Suite H, in Las Vegas, NV 89134. Our phone number is 566. HOPE (4673). We also have clinics with great doctors in the Southwest, Henderson (and Salt Lake!). Call Brandi, Renee or me today for an appointment. We will find out if we can help you. Thank you. Devin Luzod, D.C. P.S. When with the first, I am also offering the 2nd family member this same work-up for only $17! P. P. S. “Mystery head pain” often doesn’t have a category and these patients are often told to, “live with it.” It can even feel like a shock or an odd sensation into the head. The cause may be brainstem pressure and we will uncover this in our exam.
